Show where you live - 12/17/18 02:46 AM

SimHQers are from everywhere. I always wondered what you guys see on an average day In & Out.
Here are a few pics from my side, Hong Kong. All Google pics, but accurate.

Hong Kong Island & Victoria Harbour, seen from Kowloon side.
I'm there virtually every day.
[Linked Image]

Mongkok District
Considered the highest population density in the world. It is packed, you simply can't walk straight on a sidewalk for more than 1 sec.
I end up there whenever my wife suffers street-food withdrawal. Quite common.
[Linked Image]

South Lantau Isnald
This is home, restricted traffic to permit-holders only. A different Hong Kong. Away from the crowd, but then only 30min drive from the crowd :-P
When I arrived some 30 yrs back, I had to live among the crowd, the bars and the cacophony of Cantonese, Tagalog, and bits of English.
No more. I now seek migrating birds and water buffaloes.

Cheers,
Slug

I live about 15 miles SW of downtown Miami so my actual neighborhood looks very much like the first pic.

I live in the south western mountains of NC. My "town" has all of 2 stoplights.

This is High Falls. You can see the covered bridge a little at the top.
[Linked Image]

My town is down in there somewhere.

This pretty much captures the whole town.

Its a nice place to live except for the hoards of bicyclists gumming up the roads and the inebriated geriatrics looking at the leaves in the Fall. I can take the geriatrics more than the cyclists. When they bunch up in groups of 10 to 50 you can hang up passing them on the winding roads. And a lot of them now wear body cameras in case they get run off the road, attacked or well... run over.

Wow, Chef! Your town looks like the quintessential American rural town! Once I retire I wouldn't mind living in a place like that as long as high speed internet is available. smile

Re: Show where you live - 12/17/18 01:52 PM

I am on the last access point of the last node for the local cable company, Morris Broadband. They recently laid a new cable from the node because my wife griped at them for so long I guess they got tired. It's pretty decent and reliable. Before that we went 3 months without cable internet. There has been talk of an initiative to get Google Fiber out this way but I won't hold my breath about it. We have 23 devices (PCs, smart phones, Alexa, etc..) in our house that connect to the internet without much of an issue on a 10/1 connection. I have advocated going to a 20/2 connection and my wife just got a new job with a 50% pay raise so maybe that will happen.

Dupont Forest is a really great place to take walks but I go at the butt crack of dawn to avoid the hoards. My goal is to walk all of its trails at least once. In the late Spring the blue fire flies come out in the forest. We also have white squirrels in the area.

Before cancer retired me I used to work some of the times in the stone building beyond the pickup with three second story windows (Downtown).

We just built a new "market" for the farmers market and civic type stuff too "public market."

Hannover, Germany. Some call it the averagest of all German cities. No spectacular mountains, or coastline, the local river is small, the lake is artificial. Well connected, though - major hub for railways, with a nice little airport, major autobahns going N-S and E-W. Politics are boring, so is the weather. No earthquakes, tornados, or dangerous animals - the place simply works. smile

Re: Show where you live - 12/17/18 07:35 PM

11 mile commute that takes maybe 25 minutes because I drop my kids off at their schools. As for the beach, my parents have a second home on the mainland side of Pawley's Island, SC. It's a 4.5 hour drive away. The beach itself is nice but WAY TOO many people live down there now. When we go I hit the beach at 7AM and an gone by 10:30AM at the latest. It is the only way to have the beach to yourself, "mostly". The tourists are there to relax and don't wake up until I'm starting to think about heading back to the house. That house is on 2 acres of land in a spot you can only see one other house nearby. It's a pretty nice setup and you can't find that kind of seclusion along the coast much anymore. I remember when Pawleys Island was a 7-11, The Hammock Shops, a Red & White grocery store and a caution light at the Northern Causeway. Seeing the place all built up now is like seeing an old strung out heroin addict that used to be a beautiful young girl. Its painful to me to see it how it is now.

On the way home I like to stop at the general store in Salters, S.C. to get a country ham leg. Food of the Gods!!!

I looked up the area on Googlemaps and it seems like there are many town names which end in "combe". I'm sure there's some fascinating historical reason for that. smile

I'm almost 52. My kids are 9, 12 and 14 years old. I have a little ways to go. I have a hard time with crowds so I try to live on the edge of "civilization". If my wife would let me I would live a place like Deliverance and I would be the one playing the banjo.

Re: Show where you live - 12/17/18 07:57 PM

Hi PM, a coomb is a valley, so you do see it a lot! It's an old word - they even have it is Welsh, written cwm

Salcombe is one of the most expensive places to buy property outside London. It's deserted in winter though. It is very pretty and still has the remains of a wartime US landing craft repair base on one of the beaches.

We are really lucky living here.

Right now I'm sitting on a pile of money, I plan to move to a rural area next, unless property prices continue to drop so low that I'd be tempted to buy in a decidedly nicer part of Vancouver.

The downside is, I can't speak regional dialects, locked in to "formal German" for all eternity.

I live relatively near Miami Beach. Here are some shots of this interesting city:

Ocean Drive at Night. This is now (for many years) an mainly if not all tourist area but something to see if you never visited the city. In my time (90s) it was very different, it still had the Miami Vice feel.
[Linked Image]

A shot of the actual "Miami Beach" from a non disclosed apartment. Very Nice! as Borat would say.
[Linked Image]

This a day shot from "Lincoln Road" another semi tourist area but has many bistros, restaurants and shops.
[Linked Image]

Ocean Drive during the day. with classic cars from the 50s and 60s, that was for a photo shot. Day to day you would instead see Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, etc. rented or owned.

Re: Show where you live - 12/17/18 11:37 PM

I lived in S. Miami for a year in 1966...then moved back to the "Space Coast".

I was a displaced surf kid from "up the coast". I hung out at S. Beach pier, and Beach Bagels.

Lots of future "international business connections" were made just sitting on a surfboard hoping a ship would go by winkngrin dreaming of the occasional storm surf, or timing my arrival at Beach Bagels for the freshest egg bagels coming out of the oven! Yummmmm!

Life changing experience for sure.

I'm afraid Baton Rouge, Louisiana...

[Linked Image]

...isn't an exotic paradise like where some of you live (you've seen my pics, the day we walked the downtown).

Once my parents are gone and if my wife is agreeable, I'd like to sell everything and retire somewhere completely different, live in a small house in a small town in the mountains somewhere.

I had to LOL at Crane Hunter's video. Some parts of Baton Rouge are like this, although lots of the downtown area has been cleaned up in recent years.
