I have GalCiv2, (with the Dark Avatar expansion), purchased at retail 10 years go. There is a lot in there for fans of the genre, massive customization and options, and fantastic music.
Can't comment much beyond that, as I've never felt at home with RTS games, and generally didn't stick with them too long. This includes 'Sins of a Solar Empire', 'Age of Empires 2', and the 'Company of Heroes' games I had back around the same years.
While you are over at humble bundles. Destiny 2 for 12 bucks is an amazing deal If you want a Halo / Borderlands / Warframe game. Picked it up a week ago and have played it non stop. The shooting mechanics in there are top notch. Very good. Feels like insurgency with how responsive it is. Has aliens though.... and laser guns... No worse than borderlands though. Has 3 person coop through all but the first opening of the game (30-40 min). We've got a group playing it from simhq and agw.
I watched them too and thats why I didnt buy it on release. At 12 bucks I finally said ill give it a shot.
And its #%&*$# amazing. (I think they have done a bunch of quality of life patching since release. They are 2 DLC expansions in so the game right now is probably a lot different than it was on release.
For instance, if you watch the angry joe show review. Pretty much everything he hits them for has either been fixed or I didnt find it near as bad as he did. There is still an issue with the story not making sense and no in game codex. But everything else he mentioned was moot by the time I installed and played it.
The story is kind of bland though. So if you do give it a try go until you get to the EDZ open area zone. (the first of the open world zones) Takes about 30 min to do the first story/tutorial.
If you do give it a try the tutorial takes about 40-60 min to finish. Sofar that first tutorial is the worst part of the game. After it opens up it starts to shine. Check the discord if you rin into issues. Me and kludger have been playing it quite a bit.
CKII is the grandest grand strategy game. Its not for everyone though. And you almost need a veteran to bounce questions off of because the game started complicated and got 10x more complicated with every DLC they released.

One day left to get humble monthly with the 12 dollar destiny 2 game. Ive put tons of hours into this thing this month cooping with the simhq guys. Lots of fun.
several of the guys on the simhq discord play it but if you hate discord send me a PM with your blizzard user name and # and ill friend invite you and invite you to our ingame squad.
After Master's recommendation of Destiny 2 I decided to bite the bullet and sign up for a whole year of Humble Monthly. It was a nice bonus when I saw that June also included Styx: Shards of Darkness.
Anyway, the latest unlocks of Hearts of Iron IV and Blackwake don't interest me so if anyone here wants them I'll gift them to you. Both are Steam keys.

mbeaver you don't seem to understand humble, its a montly anounce last month was destiny and stix for this month , hearts of iron and blackwake will only unlock next month, they are just telling you before hand what you will get, if you buy the montly fee you can cancel at any time so you wont buy them. but before you cancel check the treasure trove to see if there is anything of interest there, last i saw there was the allan wake,
If you run it as a subscription they bill you the last thursday of the month for the next month's sub. Then once it is announced on the first day of the month you get access to the early release games immediately. (in this case HI4, Blackwake and Portal Knight) and then the rest of the previous month's games unlock (on the first as well).
So looking at last month's sub which was June's Humble Monthly.
April 26: Autobill for June's Monthly Bundle May 1: The Rest of May's Games were announced and Released May 1: June's Early Access Game was Announced and was playable (Destiny 2) May 28: July's Bundle Autobill June 1: Rest of June's Games were Announced and Released (Styx, Yooka-Laylee, Cook, serve, delicious 2, Pillars of Earth, Bear with me, suguri 2 and subserial network) June 1: July's Early Access Games were announced and playable (Blackwake, HOI4, Portal Knight)
It's really confusing as to when you pay for which month and when you get what month's games. But if you bought a whole year you dont have to worry about much of that mbeaver.
Keep in mind though that they accounce the main unlock games on the 1st but you wont unlock until the 5th unless you unlock them manually. So if you bought a year and they announce games you dont care about you can "pause" your subscription before the 5th and save that month for a game you want. Or you can unlock right away and play.

Thank's for the heads-up on that, Master. Since I didn't get any takers I'll go ahead and use the pause for this month.

I've never actually dont it myself so good luck. I only ever buy a month and then cancel the subscription immediately I think it all just comes down to if you clicked the early unlock button or not.
Old school FPS Ziggurat free at GOG next 45 hours . Ziggurat
Not a free game or sale, but cheap game at 13 CAD. I'm having a lot of fun with is on Steam. Next Day : Survival, A survival game without zombies ? Thank you. Next Day : Survival
Dammit, took my time and forgot about this and did not manage to get it for my son! I think we can do the Family option on Steam where he can play Xenonauts on his computer when I'm not playing it, so not a total loss. I don't think you can MP on that game anyway, right?
The first Insurgency is now FREE for the next 48hrs if you add it to your account on steam. This is by far the BEST coop shooter out there. I have hundreds of hours of playtime in it.

Better then CS ? l watched it on the begining ,looks like CS lite to me. not that i like CS but anything CS like and below is meh.
Insurgency has it's strong points. It is very much like CS, to me. Good movement, weapon handling, and quick play.
The AI doesn't really fortify, though, they are nearly always rushing the player, without much in the way of teamwork. Sometimes they are in the "conga line" where they can be mowed down in bulk. So players looking to capture enemy positions or strong points won't find things like garrisoned buildings, static nests, or whatnot.
It can be a decent, laid back shooter experience, though. I logged about 500 hours or so. Worth a try.
Insurgency is more of a watered down Red Orchestra. The original mod was much more like a modern Red Orchestra, but the retail game made it more mainstream. Still decent though.
It really isn't anything like CS at all. R6 Siege & CS are pretty close, with Insurgency being closer to RO.
It is FREE. so add it to your account and try it for yourself. Worst case you waste time and bandwidth and never play it again.
Im not sure I'd say that insurgency is like classical RO. It really is it's own thing.
Maybe the PvP stuff. I only play the coop checkpoint mode. You start on one side of the map and you have to push through enemies and take objectives. When you capture an objective there is a random chance for a counter attack. Then you move onto the next objective. The maps are "open" but still fairly linear.
If you have a PS4 and PS Plus, Destiny 2 is free as of today. God of War 3 remastered free in Sept. Last month Mafia 3 was free, so PS + is finally giving out worthwhile games.
Alan wake is back on steam and for a steal price, yakuza 0 is also on promotion, also bayonetta for those of you into that...i'm not judging....but i reserve the right to stare at.
Anyone on the fence for KC:D or it's dlc, Deep Silver has a publisher sale on Steam this weekend. 40% off the game, 25% off the dlc.
I'm ambivalent about From the Ashes, but did enjoy the newer Amorous Adventures of Hans Capon.
It is a quirky title, less mainstream than Witcher 3 or Skyrim... but all the better for it in my experience. Some bugs, some jank, and performance can be iffy in some areas, especially if you have settings too high. World design and story are pretty solid though, and melee combat is among the closest to IRL fencing I've seen in games (if mostly in unarmoured style).
I'll second Lieste's recommendation for KCD. Great RPG in my view. I only wish Exodus was part of this sale (i mean available for download). Did anyone like Saint's Row (3 or 4)? That's a really good deal, but I've not played a game like this since GTA San Andreas. Might be a fun change of pace.
There is even a map that shows where in the world people are currently downloading the game. As I type this, someone is downloading it somewhere on or in the ocean to the west of the African coast. Maybe they tapped into an underwater fiber-optic line. Probably satellite internet, though.
Thanks Red2112. I'd never heard of Epic Games but I signed up and got my copy. Looks like they give away a free game every 2 weeks,I'll keep my eye on that.
I got Shadow Complex for free quite some time ago on that Epic Games program. I had it on Xbox360 but its a really great 2.5D platformer especially on PC. I only use their program to access that game. Perhaps I need to run it more often if they continue to bring free games from time to time.
Epic has announced it's next free game, Super Meat Boy. Epic Games
Super Meat Boy is a tough as nails platformer where you play as a boy without skin who needs to save his girlfriend made of bandages from an evil fetus in a jar wearing a top hat and a monocle.
Yes, that's what I'm hearing. I was likely going to hold off anyways so perhaps by the time I'm ready it will be on Steam. That's where my other Metro games are.
I own Kholat and its a pretty good game. I like games like this with mysterious themes and it has great atmosphere. I've never finished it but its a good "walking" simulator/mystery/adventure. I've always struggled with performance on this one though unfortunately.

does anyone still have ANYthing to look for in steam sales ? i went in a spree 3 or 4 years ago......and now nothing catch my eye, or i already have it, lol.
I finally upgraded my PC this year, so I am likely to grab a few games. The last few years there was no point, I had everything of interest that would run on my old rig.
Master, I do not find Destiny 2, even using the "search" feature. Probably just me but Wicki shows is as a "multi-player only". Is that your experience? I do not play muliplayer and MMOGs, so, is there a "single player" option?
Thanks DaBBQ. I've had that one on my wish list. I don't like their methods, but I've been grabbing as many of the free games on Epic that I can.
I forgot about this thread for a moment, but they recently had What Remains of Edith Finch and Untold Stories for free and I think simultaneously or almost. Both of those I had on my wish list. However, I just discovered they have another new free game available and its another one I've been interested in and its available right now. Arabian Nights themed FPS developed by some Bioshock people.
I missed out on Axiom Verge because I forgot to check back with them and lost track of time. You got to really keep an eye on Epic's storefront because they don't seem to give much info on the freebies and how long they will be up.

Subwar includes very imaginative reading material to help set the mood ('Under Currents' magazine). It's a game that makes me think the developers really enjoyed creating it.
this is already a thing on Steam; you download an app Google Authenticator on your phone or they send you an E-mail with a 6 digit code and you have to have a Rockstar Social Club Login
Epic has a sale on right now, Ghost Recon Break point for $19.79 and if you already have Epic you get a $10 coupon which makes it well worth the price. there is also a Borderlands Bundle for Free.
I already own the game on Steam but don't have any of the DLC. I have a love/hate relationship with this game. Mainly hate but I'm willing to give it another go.
*edit* Looks like the DLC is free on Steam too. Anyway, something seems to be wrong. If I select to play any of the free DLC in game it just takes me to the Epic Store where it says I already own it.
I grabbed Tacoma yesterday because it looked interesting. Still trying to figure out what to do/how to do it without resorting to game guides. I like these types of games. I loved 'Observation' which is in a similar vein I guess. Mystery on a space station.
Prey is half off on Steam. Definitely worth $15. Starts off a little slow, but man it gets really good after the first section. Make sure you have great speakers or a headset for it.

I played through it 3 times. It's one of the best scifi shooters I've ever played.

Agreed. One of my favorite games in recent memory. Just replayed it the third time a month or two ago.

It's just a dang shame it was a commercial flop.
A lot of people didn't like it took about 5 hours to get really good, they also didn't like that the game required a beast of a machine for about 3 months before it was optimized.
I found the respawning enemies a chore, since the loot doesn't respawn and sooner or later I ran out of ammo on the higher difficulties. Only did the first large area of the game before calling it quits.
Also didn't like that the enemies were just dark blobs that were about as generic as they come.
Limited ammo is part of the challenge. Prey and System Shock games challenge your intelligence and require forethought and planning to succeed. One of the best features of these types of games is you can truly mess yourself up so badly you can't win the game by making poor decisions. They are not for the faint of heart, but reward those who use their intellect.
I'm sorry you don't understand what I wrote. I feel as if Prey is not the game or you. Maybe Pokemon would be better. At least there you'll have clear, visible progress in the vast library of Pokemons you collect.
Some of us regard System Shock/Ultima Underworld style games among the best genre of games ever made. You either "get" them or you don't. They aren't for everyone, but they are among the most rewarding experiences you can have gaming.
It doesnt have Aim Down Sight... I didnt finish it. Just got tired of the gunplay. Was a cool concept though and I enjoyed the atmosphere! But not enough to carry through. I took the escape shuttle when I found it and then uninstalled the game. I loved the opening though!

LOL! I'm not sure if your post would fall under a "negative" or "positive" review category. Rotten Tomatoes would be confused for sure.
Good article. I dislike the term 'immersive sim', but that's what they are calling games like this and Dishonored. I really like these games, and it would be a shame if they disappeared. But money talks and if they aren't profitable then they will not be made much longer.
The only ones that have ever managed to be profitable are the Bethesda Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, and frankly they're far weaker examples of what potential the genre has to offer than System Shock/Ultima Underworld games. I think this is because the Bethesda ones are dumbed down in what you can do, plus they hold your hand with missions and always tell you what to do and where to go and mark stuff on a map, which to me detracts immensely from gameplay. I grew up playing games that didn't tell me where to go or what to do aside from hints, and expected me to use my head to figure stuff out for myself.
I think many modern gamers are incapable of this, or find it too much of a challenge.
I found combat the least of what makes these games interesting. If I want combat, I have doom. The exploration, puzzles, immersive story and general figuring out of "wtf is going on" is what makes this genre great for me.
I think I talked about the name and how the game would have been better served, and probably sold more, with a different one. I think Neuroshock is what I suggested.
I think it might have done better if it was linked this way to the System Shock legacy. A name change isn't going to massively flip sales, but I think a different name would have been a good idea.
Some people complain about the demise of games on DVD's but one of the many benefits of digital downloads is all of these free deals on old games that we never had with physical copies.

So true, I agree.
There was those free demos and games that came with magazines, even way back in time (90´s). One usually ended buying the magazine just for the game, if it included a playthrough guide that you were also interested in then that was a added bonus. Man, that seems like yesterday, crazy how time goes by and how things change!
Yeah Red and it was the same with Strategy and Tactics Magazine..But it just for the war game inside..Still have good thoughts on being introduced to the hobby by a friend and getting excited when a new game came out..That part is pretty much the same now
I got a subscription to Car and Driver years ago for something like $5 per year, and just never canceled, so I get one of those sent to me every month or two. I've thought about canceling, but it's not worth the effort in figuring out how to do it .
I also subscribed to a digital version of Automobile magazine a while back, for a similar price, and they stopped publication and converted it over to Motor Trend, so I have that in digital form. It's kind of cool, because on decent-sized tablet, it looks like the magazine, and you can swipe from page to page.
My last magazine subscription was to National Geographic and that was dropped circa 2005.
I have every single issue of "Flight Journal" since it started in ~2006, in binders. The only magazine I subscribe to and I intend to keep doing so as long as it is published.
I like to buy books and print out my manuals (DCS etc.) form PDF´s. I just hate it when your tablet is out of battery, and I already spend to much time on a PC monitor. Don´t know if I will be around that long, but would like to see all these youngsters eyesight´s 20 years from now, without counting there wrist/forearm/muscles injuries!
Magazines are not what they used to be IMHO. They basically just have fillers with some basic knowledge of the subject, mostly backed up by the sponsor. Editorials have been long sold to who sponors them so no real facts anymore. I long stopped buying Guitar Player magazine because of all the BS they wrote about products and players. Not worth the 7€ at all! Same goes for other hobby magazines, except wargame or electronics magazines because at least you get something in return and not just someones opinion.
So yeah I´ll stick to the smell of books. In a survival situation I can always use them as tinder
I have no doubt that the majority of consumers over the age of about 45 still prefer printed media. Naturally though that segment of consumers will eventually pass and be replaced by the follow up generations which have demonstrated so far that digital media is greatly preferred.

I'm in my 60's now and I don't go anywhere without my Kindle.. had it for years. Used to take it on the ships when I deployed instead of lugging around a load of heavy books!
While there are advantages to portability, that dosen´t mean it´s safe/healthy. As with all that big money is involved, there is a tendency that even if it´s harmful for you they wont tell you. We all know that, but we promote comfort over anything else now days. A average car weighs about 2,871 lbs. which in turn uses aprox 656 gallons of fosil fuel a year. That´s just to move/transport your average male/female of 190lbs. We are doing great as humans, and we want to save the planet!
I use specific filtered glasses when I use my PC...
Hitman is a great game, I played it a couple months ago (the 2016 and 2018 releases combined in to one) Started a thread about it and you can read my thoughts here
Those who got TOTAL WAR TROY, dont forget to check your email and get the free amazon dlc as well (if you registerd to total war acess that is), IF YOU CAN, their server just crashed lol, now they are issuing a "maintenance"

Yup, i just claimed my free DLC a little while ago while I was home for lunch.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a big fan of Greek mythology and more specifically the Iliad.

Well I don't recommend it :P
I'm still interested in the Amazons DLC though, so I'm glad that I have until october 8th to claim my code. The "Internal Server Error" for the past few hours would made me nervous with a code that has a 24 hour allowance.
For people interested: The Artemis and the Hephaestus dlc's will also be free through Total War Access, so that can be a motivation to allow/negotiate the personal data mining
No Man's Sky is on sale again... The Origins update dropped yesterday and added a ton of content with regards to planetary biomes and how they look. For example, here's one planet I have visited, went from this:
If anyone is grabbing Amnesia - A Machine For Pigs free off the Epic store can you tell me if it crashes for you at the start? Says it's missing a world file or something. Verify files didn't work.

Here's a thread about it in the Steam forum. Scroll down to the post by MickeyT.
I wasn't expecting to hear that about FO76. I never finished FO4. Maybe I should try it again just to get through the story but that being said I'm ready for Bethesda to wake up and make some long needed changes and not just minor upgrades over the coarse of decades.
If I remember Panzer, I got burned out on FO4 as per what happens with Bethesda RPGs especially when I fall prey to the modding trap. I think I had 80 hours into it but started to spend too much time building my home base while also adding mods to make what Bethesda did better and I got tired of it. I had something like 320 hours in Skyrim and only got to the last quest line(I think) and didn't finish. Skyrim is hard though not to mod because they really do transform what is quite stale into something it should be out of the box.

Thanks for the reply. I know a lot of people used mods for the Fallout games but I played Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 totally unmodded and enjoyed them quite a bit. I did however play the most recent Skyrim release that has the updated graphics but that was an official release and not a fan-made mod.
Just a heads-up, Epic are offering Elite Dangerous free from Nov 19th-Nov 26th. You will also get the Horizons DLC free as that is now std with the base game.
Not a full release, but for a limited time during "made in poland week", GoG have a free demo for something which I think might tickle some need for a simple pick-up game, and for my fondness for the Medieval aesthetic.

G2A is the company so bad for developers with fraud and charge-backs that (some) developers went on record in 2019 that they would prefer you pirate their games than purchase it from G2A. Many were *losing* money from each transaction there.

Never heard about that. Honestly doesn't concern me. It's legal. The only downfall is you cannot get a Steam refund, if you don't like the game
Greenman Gaming has F1 2020 for $5 cheaper. Cheapshark.com is your friend. You can see which site has it cheaper. I've gotten many many games from Greenman Gaming. Legit site.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Flying Circus is %66 off if anyone has been waiting for a price drop.
Maybe a lot of people play the non-Steam version but I've noticed that hardly any of my Steam friends play IL-2 judging by the Steam stats that I have looked up. It just surprised me when I noticed that.

I played the original IL2 so much I can still hear the voiced radio calls in German and Russian to this day. Never did look at the newer versions, though.
Hell just received their first shipment of parkas and scarves, and not coincidentally, Combat Mission Shock Force 2 is on sale! Yeah, I couldn't either
Just saw on Twitter Ubisoft is giving free games daily form the 14th to the 18th. Trials Rising is todays game. I have zero interest in a dirt bike game. Yesterday was Watchdogs Legion, but missed out on that one. 15th was Starlink Battle For Atlas. 14th Assassin's Creed Valhalla Rewards pack, pointless unless you have the game I suppose.

You are right, a Legion rewards pack was in small letters on their Twitter account. I don't follow that series, so I had no idea how old the game was. So they are basically giving away nothing. Not enough for me to install Ubisoft Connect anyway.

You are right, a Legion rewards pack was in small letters on their Twitter account. I don't follow that series, so I had no idea how old the game was. So they are basically giving away nothing. Not enough for me to install Ubisoft Connect anyway.
UC is trash anyway, clunky ui, lots of previous features removed like one of the most trivial conecting feature...chat ! it also is very slow to bring up your friends list, only loads 30 of them and dont list them by game they are playing like uplay used to do. it takes so long to respond i havent played rainbow six with my friends since they launched this crap.......it basically halt the game while it is unresponsive searching for friends.....who though this was okay to launch ?

The Free to Play period will run for two weeks (22.12.20 10:00 PST - 05.01.20 10:00 PST), and it will allow you to access all DCS World modules for free with no time limitation within the two week period. Note that an internet connection is required for the Free to Play event and that Free to Play modules will not work in DCS World in OFFLINE mode.
We hope that you will enjoy some well earned free flight time, and who knows, maybe also to fall in love with your next aircraft or terrain.
I wish DCS would release a dynamic campaign so I could play
Alien Isolation is a great game, but, is the only game that's given me anxiety so bad I could only play in short bursts of an hour or two. I got pretty far, but the anxiety eventually got to me, and No Man's Sky proved to be far more relaxing.
why there is a few good ones in there like metro, problably the remaster, tropico 5 and jurassic world evolution. i was afraid it would repeat the list from last year
The hilarious irony here is that everyone I know who has a huge catalog of free games on EPIC have also barely played any of them due to lack of time. I guess they just want to have a ready-made collection of games to play when they retire.
Metro Last Light Redux free on GOG until Jan. 1st. LINK
If I didn't already own it I would pick it up immediately! I'm a huge fan of the Metro series and apparently a sequel to Exodus is already being worked on.

I have it too, haven't played it yet though. I figure a lot of guys here will already have it. I did play Exodus. I enjoyed it.

How much is it selling for now? I think I paid around $35 for it on Steam several months ago. Considering how many hours I put into the game I'd say I definitely got my money's worth out of it!
I recently finished the Redux version of Metro 2033. It ran much better than the original Metro 2033. Years ago I got the 2033 Redux which ran great and was able to finally play and finish it. I think GOG connect gave me a free copy of 2033 Redux via Steam so its nice to get a free copy of Last Light Redux now too. I haven't played it yet but I hope to play Exodus at some point. The Metro games are pretty darn amazing FPS with great visuals and atmosphere but sometimes some bugs.
I wish I had not missed that Brigadier offer. That looks pretty cool.
I corrected my post because it was horribly written. I finished Metro 2033 Redux some time ago which ran great compared to the original which I could never get through as it ran poorly. I'm currently playing the original Metro Last Light which runs apparently a better optimized engine than the original Metro 2033. I have heard that LL Redux is even better optimized but I don't want to start over. The original Last Light really does run great. There are just some moments when looking into a corner where you seem to get these weird frame rate "traps" that just go back when looking into that corner and its usually the wall the represents the level transition.
Mr_Blastman, thank you. That is very kind of you and I appreciate the gesture very much. I'm sure one day I'll be able to pick up Exodus and at a decent price too.
I don't think we need to get super literal here about that kind of thing. Folks may have Prime and not realize they offer games as a part of the package. I have Prime strictly for the shipping, so everything on top of that (music, video, gaming) is gravy and I count it as free.
I'll put it this way: If you are a fan of the Star Wars universe and you enjoy the Battlefield-style gameplay then I recommend it. It's a very well polished game with great graphics and it can be a lot of fun in Coop mode.
I watched a 'how to' for the game last night Panzer. I knew it wasn't for me when the guy spent 15 minutes setting the game up. I know some like this sort of thing but I just find it boring as you do.
GOG has Rebel Galaxy Outlaw listed at 50% off or $14.99. I've had it for over a year now and still come back to it to play through the campaign. That's about a 30 hours or more play through. I also keep one game saved at a station where I can fire up a game of 8 ball when I'm bored. The 8-ball pool game is fairly sophisticated just to be a mini-game.
I guess because I thought it was an Epic or Steam exclusive, but didn't bother to check. Sorry! I just assumed they were selling a Steam key. I haven't bought anything from them in years.
So how many of you have a huge backlog of free games which haven't been played yet?
i though i had like 20 to 30 epic games because i didnt pick all the free games, specially if i already owned them....turns out its close to a hundred. plus 60 on uplay and 390 on steam......yeah.....im never going to finish them

so in order to combat small players, they made it free...but you cant use the full version vs the free....separating the player base.....kay
I loved Civ 5. More so than the earlier titles for a number of reasons, but mainly the one unit per tile end of the doomstack. I installed Civ 6 then lost six hours in a blink.

How is combat handled in the CIV games? Is there a 3D battle mode or do the armies just fight it out on the strategic map?
Fight on the map. It's very basic. Your unit in one hex 'attacks' an enemy unit in an adjacent hex, the combat is resolved based on attack and defense values, terrain modfiers and the like. Some units like archers, submarines and attack helicopters are ranged and can shoot more than one hex. Since they did away with doomstacks it's a little more tactical, but very basic.

I'm knee-deep in the Total War and Paradox strategy games right now but I might give CIV 6 a shot in the future just to see how different it is. I've never played any of the CIV titles.
You should grab it on this sale and then play it when you get around to it. Steam says the Platinum Edition is 76%-off, so that's quite the deal.
It's a great experience, and you will lose track of time. There are 40 factions to choose from, and many options that give a crazy amount of replayability. There are several ways to win (culture, domination, science, etc) that let you play wide or tall and still succeed. If strategy games that make you agonize over opportunity cost are appealing then Civ is a good choice. Personally I love games like this that keep my brain so engaged, constantly planning, making decision after decision. It's really quite engrossing.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check out the Steam page for CIV 6.
Me too. I bought three exclusive games on Epic -- Borderlands 3, RDR 2 and Exodus -- and have since bought them all on Steam too lol. Nothing against Epic per se, but I prefer Steam and got tired of returning to Epic after a while and having to update launchers, games, libraries and Epic itself. Not a big deal really, but I try to keep everything under the Steam umbrella unless I just can't wait the year it will take to hit Steam. Hitman 3 is a case in point, but this one I am going to wait.
Civ games are bad for players that have to get up early and go to work lol.
I got Civ VI when it was free on Epic, but haven't bothered to install it yet along with quite a few other free games I accepted. I have Civ 5 on Steam and just couldn't get into it so it's currently not installed. I think the total war games have ruined me for trying to play the Civ games.
Anyway, I got all of these free:
Civ 6 Troy Total war saga Assassins Creed Syndicate Kingdom Come Deliverance Metro 2033 Redux Metro Last Light Redux Starwars Battlefront II Mudrunner
Of those, I have only installed and played the Metro 2033 redux. I wasn't that impressed with it over the original which I still have installed through Steam. I will probably install Last Light redux just to give it a shot also. Still, I have no real issues with Epic and there's nothing wrong with free stuff. With the barrels of money that Steam is raking in, they could offer a few more games free occasionally. At last check, Gabe Newell--head of Valve and Steam was worth 4.1 billion. I think he could even afford it personally.
I'm surprised you haven't tried Troy yet. If you have any interest in Greek mythology and the Late Bronze Age era of the eastern Mediterranean region you will most certainly enjoy this game.

If you didn't like Civ5, you won't like Civ6 I don't think. Very similar, and while there have been many changes and additions, it's still the same game at its core.

I have all of these and like them. KCD is great, my favorite melee combat. Worth a go for sure. And I liked Last Light the best of all three Metro games. All of them are good in my view, but Last Light is my favorite. Those are some good games for free, no doubt.
I'm an absolute huge fan of the Metro series. It's a nice experience to actually a play a first person shooter with a different vibe to it and not the usual mainstream stuff.

It really doesn't interest me but being a TW geek, I took advantage of the freebie anyway. My gaming has been curtailed for over a month now since I've had two PC issues complicated by USPS priority mail losing the components I ordered for almost 5 weeks. I'm up and running now having replaced both my PSU and then just subbing in an old GPU for the GTX 980 Ti that had a PCI-e connector go bad making me think it was the Power supply in the first place. My current rig was from Cyberpower but it's 7 years old now. However, it's handled everything I've thrown at it with only the one GPU upgrade made back in 2016
I got so disgusted with my issues that I pulled the trigger on a new custom PC build from Cyberpower this past Monday. That $1400 stimulus recovery deposit that I thought I didn't really need partially helped to fund my new rig after all.

I know a lot of people who didn't buy Three Kingdoms simply because they were not interested at all in the historical setting of Ancient China. That's fair enough since the historical settings is really a vital component of any TW historical title.
QUICK ! ACT NOW BEFORE THEY FIGURE THE LOOP HOLE !
if you own hitman on epic (last year giveaway) there is a promotion that will give you hitman gold edition for free for all owners of hitman 3, BUT hitman 3 has a free version of the game with only the starter mission, if you add that one you can still claim hitman gold edition...it will show up full price, but when you add to the chart the full discount applies. i take back what i said before, epic is a GREAT store, \LMAO
Alien Isolation is an excellent game and very well done. I recommend the anit-aliasing mod that someone made for it. Its amazing how well it works while having no performance impact.
Portal Reloaded now available on Steam. More test chambers and a new 3 portal gun, the two familiar ones and a third for time travel. You have to already own Portal 2 but the addon is free.

I found over on ModDB a fan made Wolfenstein game using what they call the GZDoom engine.(I think its the engine used by the older Doom games) Its called Blade of Agony and it looks pretty interesting if you like the Wolfenstein games and Doom shooters. I have no interest in Doom but I enjoyed NAM and WWII G.I. years ago using a Doom engine. This mod however has lots of nice looking bells and whistles. It also does not require you to own Doom to play. Its an all in one package or you can get the separate file to mod your Doom game if you choose.
I've only done the tutorial training yet so I don't know how it really is yet. The nice thing is that its supposed to be single player story driven.
I've owned Frostpunk for years, bought it on sale. About four months ago I thought I'd give it a go finally, and started it only to realize I didn't know what I should do and set it aside until I could learn more about opening moves and strategies and then never did anything about it. So I remain stuck on about 45 minutes lol.
I think I might like it, but don't feel compelled to get started. Odd.
Heck, I'd play IL-2 BoS more if it had a way to skip to waypoints. Those darned escort missions--30 minutes of zigzagging until the target area drives me insane.

Frostpunk is a great game, I highly recommend it. But I do underrstand you, I was confused in the beginning too. I watched a few tutorials on YT to understand the mechanics of the game. F.E It is important to build houses in groups and near to the generator, because if they are getting too cold, people will get ill and you loose your workforce and with that you might run out of ressources like coal. If this happens and the generator shuts down, you quickly end in a spiral of death.
Thanks for that Kilo, sorry I didn't notice this reply earlier. I'll get around to it eventually. Is it depressing? It's part of the reason I've not tried it, never much in the mood for misery it seems. Same thing keeps me from playing This War of Mine, which I bought in the same Steam sale as Frost Punk. Both games sitting there unplayed for years.

the hell you bough a game about misery and kids dying if you dont like it ? you ARE POSER arent you ? you buy games to display on steam !
Seems these days buying a game is a bad thing, just wait for them to be given away.
DBond, funny you mention depressing. When my wife first got sick with her permanent disability, I first tried playing Bioshock 2, and later Fallout New Vegas, but had to quit both shortly thereafter due to being too depressing. They were too much to handle at the time.

Interesting Blastman. I played through both of those and didn't have the same reaction. Was it something inherent in the game, or was it something that didn't allow you to escape the emotion of your wife's struggles?
I knew what I was getting in to with This War of Mine and Frost Punk in a general sense. I know what they are about. But I don't know how I will react. Only one way to find out!
Thinking now of which games I have played that I would classify as depressing. Silent Hill 2 was. Soma too.
Bioshock 2 was the little girl calling me "Daddy" over and over. My wife had to go live with her parents for 24/7 care and my daughter went with her because I had to go into the office every day. Even though I saw them almost every day, that still made things unbearable, especially late at night, so I quit that game within an hour or two.
Fallout New Vegas was just... bleak and full of death and despair. When your wife at 37 comes down with a permanent, disabling illness, that kind of atmosphere doesn't help things.
Seems these days buying a game is a bad thing, just wait for them to be given away.
It isn't helping my shelf of shame, I will tell you that.
I subscribe to the Humble Monthly, so I have a huge steam library that I haven't played. However, having such a huge library has been a boon for finding games for my daughter and I to play together. We've spent way more time doing things than we would have otherwise because of the subscription and backlog.
I had a similar problem trying to play This War Of Mine. When I accidentally killed the father of two small children then had to make the decision to take the children & definitely starve someone else or to just leave them. I can play games without that sort of recreational stress
Hellpoint--another game on humble monthly that is given away for free within a few weeks. Same was for Control. I hear Hellpoint is good, though, according to a friend.
I'm playing through Bard's Tale IV right now, which is extraordinarily awesome so far...

Something called "Absolute Drift" is free on GOG. GOG is beginning to have strings attached to their free games as of late requiring use of your account's email address.
I followed OFP for years before release and couldn't wait to play it. It turned out to be a challenging but amazing war game that remains one of the classics in my opinion.

How generous of them! Offering a game for free that was released 20 years ago.

I still enjoy firing it up every once and awhile. I love the nostalgia. The music was top notch.
GOG has loads of stuff on sale at the moment. For anyone who wants stroll down memory lane you can get digital copies of European Air War, 1942 Pacific Air War, and Fleet Defender for very little.
Boom. I'd been looking the past few days but held off thinking the Summer Sale was around the corner, and it duly arrived.
I remember when this was a big event here, with members posting what they bought in the various Steam sales.
I'll have a bash and see what comes up.
DOS2 for $18 is a good deal, but I got it already. $20 for Borderlands 3, same. Forza Horizon 4 for $30. Was thinking of picking it up but needs an X Box account I think. Looks fun. Warhammer 2 for $30. Metro Exodus Gold for $16,
I might finally pick up Disco Elysium, which intrigues me. I'll get something I'm sure.
between my immense backlog and all the surplus of free games from a miriad of places.....i dont even wanna buy stuff anymore. because.......i can literaly wait for a very....long ass time. i have 15 years worth of games here if not more. can you see it ? https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197990291276/games/?tab=all
actually modding and building bases, and missions for SP, i stay away from online. and yeah, it takes a long as time, but most of those are the game running in the background while i do something else and then go back to it, it is also why cyberpunk i barely played is so high, mgs V though its all me

Many industry analysts predicted that this would happen and it seems that it has happened to a significant degree. The same thing happened with music. Once consumers could stream it for free from Youtube or from a dedicated service like Spotify or Pandora, many of them saw no reason to ever pay for music again.
Grab Bard's Tale IV. I'm only about 23 hours into the game, but so far is one of the best I have played in a couple of decades.
Thanks for the recommendation. I had considered it and passed it over because it seems puzzle-heavy, which I'm not exactly opposed to, but that I often find not fun too. Depends on the game and the puzzles I guess. I'll give it a closer look.
The combat is a fantastic evolution of turn based dungeon crawler style. Hard to describe, but know that on hard difficulty(not the hardest) you can't simply click attack and win. Every combat plays out differently. Think of chess meets dungeon crawler meets battletech.
I already had Shadowrun free on GOG but I have never played it. Are these games like XCOM with regards to turn-based maneuvers? How are the stories in these games? Thanks for the heads up.

Pretty much like XCOM, although personally I like the Shadowrun series better. I find the storyline better made (more thought put into it), and the cyberpunk setting is more of my liking. It´s been some years since I played either but I remember I ejoyed Shadowrun alot more. The same goes for Xenonauts, I liked that better then XCOM, Xenonauts is more like the earlier XCOM, which for me is better then the new incarnation.

Played all 3. First one is just okay story line wise. The 2nd one was really good, the 3rd they really shined on it, but there are a few things I don't like about the pacing. You have to pick your missions carefully or you don't get to see a decent portion of the story. The story is probably the best of them.
First one spoiler:
You fight a cult with some spiders and a portal.
Overall the 2nd two are definitely solid games, First one you can skip if you aren't really into the RPG. None of them are connected so you can play whatever you want. If you like Cyberpunk stuff with some magic, I'd definitely do the last two, Dragon Fall and Hong Kong.
This week Verdun is free on Epic. Next week it's Train Sim World 2.
Thanks Chucky! I´ll go for TSW2 and see how it runs. TWS wasn't quite optimized for my pc and ran like crap on some runs. I have Run8 Installed but haven't touched it for awhile.
I took me multiple attempts, but I was able to add them to my library. Epic was crashing. They remind me of the Uncharted games, which were very fun to play.

Same. I tried in the morning and nothing worked. I claimed them the next day and it worked fine.
I still freak out with Steam, I mean If you don´t scroll down to where the updates and offers are, you wont see that It´s free! I mean can´t they just put It up top so as you launch Steam It would be the first thing you see? I mean like GOG does for f*** sake! Man there so comercial about everything!
I didn't find about it on Steam (as usual) but from gaming sites I visit or YT gaming channels. And yes, I don't think I've ever grabbed a Steam freebie from the store page at the top.
Yeah I agree. They push what Interest them for sales or whatever, not based on what you like which doesn't make much senses to me. If you search by tags, I found that half the stuff doesn´t show up and again most of the stuff Is of there Interest. I tend to seach for new releases but even with that you have to go through a hoop. New & Noteworthy -> New & trending -> New Releases -> All New Releases!
So yeah a bit of a hassle just to find "what´s new". Some games are just like hidden and get no promotion what so ever and can spend a year with not one purchase or review, slip totally right under the radar!
I tried Poly Sqaud. No one online playing. Might get money back and delete. Found a "just kill some time shooter". Called Ravenfield. It was $14.95. Kinda fun, for now. I'll give it 24 hours. It's single player.

No, not much action on the servers but you have bots, and If you have some friends then more fun. At the price of a beer, well why not.
Ravenfield Is good, I also have it, and there´s some cool mods for it too. I just wish they would go for some camo outfits. The overall color pallet for this game Is just to boring although the game Is good. If it could look like Poly Squad it would be a game changer for me. Would be great If they added MP too, although there´s a mod for it, or there use to be.
I just found this since I am In my low poly mood...
Help Me Please, yeah not much of a title but quite a challenging game IMO. Typical zombi shooter but with a twist were you have traps and other dangers to look out for. It´s also a bit like a rouge like game because If you die, you need to start over, although there are checkpoints. No hand holding, low ammo count and be very cautious. Game Is In EA and a bit rough (no options yet) but It has a neat mix of Ideas and It´s very atmospheric with some fear factor added. Kind of keeps you on your toes thing!
Reminds me of the old Nintendo hockey, where you could pick from a fat slow bruiser, a mid-sized all-rounder and a skinny fast dude. I always went 1-2-1.
This looks cool, and the puck doesn't seem stuck to the sticks which is good. But 3-on-3 with no goalies. The AI at least tries to get in front of goal in that video.
Probably not a game for me, but the art style reminds me also of the baseball game, Super Mega Baseball, which looks cartoony, but is actually a really good baseball simulation. Lots of fun with that one. Great pitching interface. All of it is good, batting, fielding, baserunning too. Career mode, very customizable. This hockey game sort of reminded me of it with the art approach.
Thanks Red2112. I tried Polygon, it was fun but I am terrible at FPS games. I haven't played any in ten years. I like that it is free, that way I can just jump in and have some fun. The hockey and baseball games look cool. I pulled out an out my old FS10 Logitech game pad controller, but there doesn't seem to be any Windows 10 64 bit drivers available. Can anyone suggest a new game pad controller for a PC ?
I use USB X Box controllers. $15 on Amazon. Works great, plug and play with no compatibility issues. Playstation controllers also work, evidently, but I had lots of trouble getting it recognized on PC and finally abandoned the attempt and went X Box. No charging to worry about either with USB.
I've tried several. I use them for F1 2022, FH5, GTA, Elite Dangerous sensor suites and sports games (FIFA, SMB3, etc). The one I like the best is made by a company called Power A I think. Has the best stick response of the ones I've tried.
Polygon Is a bit fast, like Insurgency or Battlefield, that hasn't changed I am afraid. I don´t play as long as I use to now but for a quick 30-40min. play I am ok with that. It´s fun and free so even If you don´t play a lot It´s worth having around. With regards to your gamepad (Logitech FS10), are you sure It´s not a Logitech F310? Because I have one that I don´t use for gaming (just for MSFS 2020 cam views) and there are drivers, If so here you go... Logitech F310 software: Logitech Gamepad F310 Software download
Now If you are using the above mentioned F310, I would still recommend the Xbox Gamepad as suggested by DBond. Mainly because the F310 Is not to reliable and you can have some Issues with it In some games, that´s why I don´t use It for gaming any more. The Xbox gamepad Is robust and practically fail proof as DBond mentioned. I don´t use it with FPS games, or at least the more competitive ones because I have a hard time aiming, just not use to it. I am using It with Cyberpunk 2077 but not for online FPS.
Slapshot Rebound Is quite unique because as DBond said, the puck Is not stuck to the stick which Is great! It takes a bit of practice and to get use to but slowly you get the feel for it and It´s quite cool! Never tried a hockey game with that mechanic and now that I tried It wonder why they didn´t come up with that In EA sports all those years back! I also like the Baseball game you suggested DBond, that looks cool too. I´ll keep an eye on It for when It goes on sale, you also have the 2018 version which Is half the price of last years version from what I have seen. Thanks DBond.
Thanks again Red2112 and DBond. Red, you're right, it was a F310. I did download the drivers and tried it out with the free Slapshot hockey game. It seems to work. I did find a Turtle Beach X-Box controller on Amazon that does support W10 though, because the F310 seemed a little buggy. I have started to slowly get back into gaming after a decade long absence. Been having fun with DCS World (F-86 and F-5), Wings over the Reich, Strike Fighters 2, and Tiny Combat Arena. My old Saitek X52 still works likes a charm. I sure wish there was a new EA Sports NHL available for PC. I was a hardcore player all the way up until they stopped their PC support. Haven't had a console since PS2.
Bah, we don't really get many hockey games on PC with the exception of manager games. I think the last decent 5v5 one was Old Time Hockey. 70s bush league stuff and heavily inspired by the movie Slap Shot so the penalties are few and fighting frequent. There's a story mode and you can play exhibition games, no other modes or even seasons. Looks like they call it Bush Hockey League now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/543010/Bush_Hockey_League/
I don't even remember the last time an NHL game came to the PC. 2009 maybe?
I will second the recommendation for Super Mega Baseball. Cartoony looking but it's a great baseball game.

Yep, no love for hockey games for PC any more which sucks, although they recently launched NHL 22 for the PS5. Something I will just not understand aside from a exclusive promotion for the PS5 that doesn't surprise me either!
With regards to Bush Hockey League, I bought that when It came out and the controller support/gameplay was just horrible! Don´t know If that has changed much since...
Thanks for heads up on Bush League. I bought it. When I start the game, it wont go past the very first screen. It seems to be a known issue. It really looked like fun though. I just did a refund request. I still have EA Sports NHL 09 on a XP offline box. My Dad uses it for RealFlight 4.5 RC sim.

Hmm, Real Flight 4.5 RC? Neat, I used that too for practice reasons. So I could get use to flying Incoming because you have to fly opposite stick while Inbound from were your looking.
You can have a look at Canvas Hockey too, It´s on sale (25% off). I haven´t tried it... Canvas Hockey Steam store It sort of looks like playing Eastside Hockey Manager from It´s top down view, and of course with less players.
Ok, the game Is not on sale but since we are on the subject of PC sports I thought I should throw this In here. Beside I know that Panzer Meyer and DBond are into driver sports (F1 etc.) and this looks real cool and fun, and for some reason I think It fits those with a controller set-up. So no need for fancy hardware. Saw this some weeks ago, here ya go...

Flying opposite stick while flying inbound seems to be the biggest hurdle for new RC pilots. One of the RC clubs my Dad and I belonged to had training night on Wednesdays. Anyone who showed up could try flying. We just put them on a buddy box. I have even had guys that were licensed pilots have trouble with it.
What always helped me was that I would imagine myself in the pilot seat of the RC plane as I was making my approach, then the opposite stick seemed much more natural. It took some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it isn't so bad. Sometimes I'd even turn my body so it was facing the same direction as the plane and look over my shoulder during landings. Once it got more natural I found I didn't need to do that anymore.
I recently wrote about Canvas Hockey here on this thread, well It´s on sale for cheap (80% off 1,63€). Can´t beat that! Tested with a Xbox gamepad and works good.
I don't mind the graphics in Canvas Hockey (minus some of the obnoxious ice backgrounds), I'd just prefer a regulation sized rink and 5v5. I suppose for only two bucks I can overlook much of that and give it a try.

I take It as a drive on memory lane and never better said as It reminds me of those times I would play hockey as a kid In the back lane of my house with a couple of friends when I lived In Montreal
I played that, and can still recall it pretty well. I also played Wayne Gretzky Hockey around that time. I feel like that was on PC, and on 3.5" floppies. Lots of them haha. But maybe it was NES. hard to recall after so much time. These were all I had for several years for hockey games. The big shift though was when Sega came out.
EA's NHL '93 was a seminal moment. This hockey was on an entirely different level to the games we are discussing. I loved it. But it had no league mode. So I made my own. I played the Flyers, and using copies of the Hockey News (anyone remember that?) I simulated every other league game through the course of the entire season. But there's more! I also tracked stats for every team, and kept league leaders. All of this written by hand. Hard core, man.
But that only lasted a year, because by then NHL '94 came out. League mode, stats, goalie control, one-timers. I could put away my pencil, and let the computer track it all for me. This is still my favorite hockey game eva (NHL2K5 a close second). And it was so much fun with friends. We would sit around and drink beer and smoke pot and have all-night marathons for supremacy.
In our couch league I played the Blackhawks, and I still remember my lineup. Roenick, Larmer, Goulet, Chelios and Steve Smith. Eddie Belfour in goal. I have little I can offer in the way of proof, but I was unbeatable.
The phrase most-muttered by my friends was 'f*ck Roenick' as he lit them up again.
That sounds awesome DBond. All my friends were heavily into football. So needless to say, when we would have our party/video game night it was always Madden football. I could rarely get them to play NHL games. My obsession with hockey had marked me with the nickname "hockey junkie". All that changed when the Wings won the cup in 1997. Then everybody around here just loved hockey. By then all of us guys were married with kids, so game nights were rare. I really don't remember there being a very big online presence for NHL PC gaming back then either.
That video is good stuff! The clip of NHL '97 brings back the feeling that it had lost the magic it once held. That was about the time I got out, as the on-ice product became what I called 'rod hockey', where the players just rushed end to end in straight lines. Back and forth race-track stuff. It wasn't until NHL2K5 that the slide was reversed. Here was a game with actual scrums along the boards and i thought it was great. but they only made this one for a couple seasons and then it was back to EA, and I was done then.
I tried a few more through the years, but I just didn't feel like it was real hockey, it was something else, like a X-games version of it or something.
I agree with '94 being great. That might also be because aside from some of the older NES games, that was my entry to the series. After that I did go back and get the older ones and tried them out. I vaguely remember some of them having some cool features that 94 lack, but can't quite recall exactly what they were and that 94 was definitely better. 94 was so highly regarded that 2014 had a 94 mode in the options that changed the control scheme back to the original 94 era (as far as using only a few buttons, you could still use an analog stick to move).
For the record that first linked controller does work on PC, I had one and it was great. Got the updated one and it also works just fine with PC. Has a few extra buttons that the old one didn't another couple small ones by the big xbox button and two more on the bottom that you use with your grip fingers (middle or ring). Works fine too.
Tip for anyone thinking of getting one, different colors are different prices. The white one is at least 5 bucks cheaper than the others.
My nephew is selling me his old Playstation 3. I just ordered EA Sports NHL 2014 from Amazon. Looking at these posts has got me jonesing to play it again.

I have a PS3 too but I haven´t use It yet. Did try It out and It works, that I know of (no controller). Asking, can´t you play PS2 games on a PS3? I think I red somewhere that you could.
Back to sales...
Outer Wilds Is on sale (50% off 10,49€). I wont post any videos as with this game It´s best to go In blind. Just don´t play It with your eyes closed
I got into NHL 92 on the Sega Genesis. I hadn't touched a video game (outside an arcade) since 1982. We use to get together and have tournaments for money. 3 or 4 TV's on the go. Lots of beer consumed, fun times. I don't remember what year the "skill stick" was incorporated, but that was a huge game changer. stick handling, push forward for a wrister, full back to front for a slap shot. I have not had a console for a couple of years now and I doubt I will be getting one. I wish they would put the NHL games on PC. Perhaps one of the streaming services will offer it someday.
I can't say I have ever heard a positive thing Electronic Arts. Maybe another company can make a game that is available on Steam like WT said. I would even be happy with a game that looked and played like a 90's version. Five on five, line changes, penalties, etc.. It doesn't even have to have real NHL teams and players. That would save a ton on licensing fees. But knowing Bettman, he would probably sue to block it anyways.

Pre 2000 they were the real deal. That EA logo was practically an instant buy.
I think certain Playstation 3's can play certain PS2 games. I looked into it recently because I was hoping I could play my old PS2 copy of X FIles: Resist or Serve on my PS3 but my particular version apparently is not backwards compatible. I have a later model I bought in 2011 called the "Slim" model.

You can play PS2 games on PC with the right software. Just pop your original game disc into the DVD drive and load them right up.

Hi Blastman, thank you!
I thought PS games were backward compatible. Don´t remember were I heard that but any ways.

Oh I see...
My PS3 Is a normal one I guess, I got It second hand so to say, but thanks for the Info. I know there are emulators and all that stuff but that just breaks the whole Idea of using your PS with your TV.

It's in the game.
Yep, exactly. They made great sports games, from Madden, the hockey games, college football, FIFA, Formula 1. Flight sims like US Navy Fighters and Marine Fighters. The Jane's stuff like Longbow and F-15 was EA. I mean they even made Road Rash, and that's peak awesome right there.

Maybe some PS3 are? Never tried. I was able to run a PS1 game on my PS2 back in the day.
Hard Drivin' was pretty amazing for the time. The arcade owners wanted too many quarters per play, though. I remember seeing it often cost four quarters just to start. As a frugal boy who earned his pocket money by mowing lawns I took a hard pass on that.
I was a kid during the video arcade days, as I suspect many here were. You know, when Pacman and Asteroids were a thing. But I spent my time playing pinball. The only two video games I would play regularly were Defender and Stargate. It's been all downhill from there.

Before I got my first desktop PC in 1992 I was a frequent visitor to the video arcade establishments. I remember there was a Star Trek Next Generation pinball machine that I played quite frequently but what I remember even more fondly is the Star Trek Wrath of Khan video arcade game where you would sit down to play it. It had the classic late 70's/early 80's wireframe graphics.

All PS1 games can be played on a PS2 and PS3.
Only some of the early fat PS3s were backwards compatible with PS2 games. they had native hardware emulation. It was eventually removed for cost purposes.

My arcade game was Galaxia and Galaga. I had a friend who's mom spoiled in rotten. In 8th grade she would drop us off at the arcade on Saturday's and hand a big bag of quarters. We would go nuts for hours. I remember the look down football game of x's and o's that had a ball that you had to roll to move the players.

Used to play a lot of baseball games way back when I frequented the video arcades back in the 80's and 90's. I also played them with some friends who had a console system during that same era. Now though the only sports games I play on my PC are auto racing sims like F1 and Project Cars.
SMB3 is well worth your time and money if you like baseball. As I said earlier it looks cartoony but it's a fine baseball sim. I like it. Franchise mode is fun, and the game is ridiculously configurable.

is it MLB licensed or does it use generic teams and players?

It's not licensed. All the players, teams and locations are made up.
I would love a good baseball game which I haven't played one really in decades probably. The last one I remember really playing was a friend's copy of RBI Baseball for the Nintendo that I think I later bought from him. I remember several years ago trying one of the MLB The Show games. I think it was for PS3. I put the game in and was immediately confounded by the game's main menu. I couldn't even figure out how to just play a game of baseball on it. I don't remember why but I think it felt more like it was geared more for serious types who like to manage teams and then run a simulation of a season or something. I don't know what the deal was but I couldn't figure out how to play it.
I for a long time have wanted someone to make a baseball game that's not only and homage to the American sport but that specifically is an period piece game set in the 1920s-1940s with great attention to detail for the look of the whole game using everything correct from the era as much as possible and giving the whole game a grounded, historical feel. Then on top of that make a heck of a good baseball game/simulation that's FUN to play with really good animations and fielding controls/batting/pitching as well as giving tons of personality to all the players with their own background stories. Also have cinematic camera editing and recording software packed with it with options to play the game with filters such as dulling colors or even playing in a Noir, black and white or sepia toned filter.
If you have a playstation, MLB The Show is a good modern day, realistic, and licensed baseball game. I can't hit for the life of me, so I usually just play the manager or make a pitcher in their version of career mode.
SMB3 is very accessible. The interface is great, I really like the pitching. I like the franchise mode too. You can set your league up in so many ways, and the difficulty is finely tunable. Can't really knock it aside from the lack of licenses. It's fun, simple to play and produces a good game of baseball.
Great sim, that ^. I have several hundred hours and multiple careers completed, plus the narrative mode they added. No one ever took me up on the offer to play a co-op career with me, but what can you do?
With F1 kicking off this weekend I am itching to get back in. But I've found that as great as F1 2021 is, I can't find the fire since the cars are an entire generation ago
Seriously though, I suddenly found I didn't want to play it without the new cars, liveries and driver changes. I probably will, because it will be months before the next one's out I reckon. Usually released in mid-summer. It's rare this sort of thing affects me. But this season is so radically different that 2021 feels like old news.
But that's me and it's a great sim, especially at that price point.
As always, I have a thread on it, but it starts in 2020 and takes a bit to get to 2021
Thanks for the tip on F1 2021. I went for the F1 2021/ Need for speed HEAT combo. Both deLuxe versions. I have a Logitec Momo racing force feedback Wheel on a shelf. Wonder if it will work?
I have a older Logitech Driving Force GT wheel kit that I use to use with Project Cars 2 and that worked, so I would Imagine that yours should work too.
What bothers me about wheels Is that depending on where/how your monitor Is set up, the wheel will cover a 3rd. of your monitor view from your sitting position. So I end up just playing for awhile and uninstalling the wheel from my desk! It´s a bummer because I really had fun with PC2 and Euro Truck Simulator 2. Now I only once In awhile Install WRC 6 - 7 and play with my Xbox controller. That set-up works great with WRC and It´s how I use to play It with the PS2.
If any of you that are now getting in to F1 2021 want to try a co-op championship hit me up. Or if you need setups or setup help, want to compare hotlaps or whatever.
We have been talking about baseball games. Has anyone played Out of the Park Baseball? It's Football Manager for baseball, you don't pitch and swing, but control just about everything else. I've bought two editions, I think 2017 and 2020. It's really good if you like management sims.

Well, it was a few years ago. I liked it a lot. I'm a strat gamer and motorsport fan, as you said, and it's a natural fit for me. But it could have sucked. It doesn't, it's a lot of fun. I took a team from the worst team in the lowest tier to double world title and it was a great time. I'd like to see it expanded, the depth anyway, and maybe we'll see a MM2? In that thread I said something like I want a racing sim where you run the team too, not just setup and paint shop. Then F1 2020 came along with My Team and it's exactly that.

Do you like WRC?
Guess where I was today...
Crappy day but been a follower for the past 40 years. Most sections of the race pass by my girlfriends town, or close to were we live. I live 20min. from Girona which Is one of the starting points.
Personally I like the classics edition because I started to go to the race sections when I was 20, so most of the cars are from that era. Also because the roar of the engines of those era cars has nothing to do with the "light hearted" roar of todays WRC cars!
This Is when I started to enjoy WRC many moons ago...
Lancia Delta HF Integrale. Winner of 46 world titles. Unmatched till date.
Both payware for WRC 8. I own WRC 7 and 8. We use to play a lot of WRC and Colin McRae Rally on the PS2 back then.
WRC is semi-sim and not as hardcore as Dirt Rally 2.0, that´s one of the reasons I like It. The other two are that you compete against time (yourself) and the track (sections). So there´s no direct pressure with other drivers on the same track as you would with other race games, I am a bit to old for that tension now! The second thing Is that they work very well with a controller, no need for fancy hardware If you don´t have it or want to set It up. Lastly, each track demands very different car set-ups and handling due to terrain, night and day, and weather conditions which makes It very challenging.
No, never got in to rally. I'm too scared for the spectators!
I played Colin McRae back in the day, but my racing's on tarmac, except some off road stuff in Forza I guess. Actually now that I think of it, that's a lot like rally if all the rally cars started on a grid.

There´s been a lot of accident´s (run overs) since the 49 editions (years) that WRC has been on going. It´s a bit more controlled now and spectators are more aware of this now. But here In the virtual world there´s no real danger, your biggest danger Is/are side walls, trees, boulders etc.
Yesterday was a crappy day, and today Is even worst (heavy rain), but we usually spend the day, or even a few days (with tents). Drink a lot of wine, with some good food and meet nice people who also enjoy the sport.
Another thing I like about WRC (virtual) Is that you can always jump In and run through a section that wont take up much of your time as a full race would do In other driving sims.
Yes you always start on a grid (starting point) were the timer starts. with different control points through the leg. See below the map sections (legs) for this years 70 (historic) Rally Motul Costa Brava... I am 20min. from any of these sections
Still prefer Dirt Rally 2.0 I didn't like the crew management aspect that came with WRC 8. Not sure if it can be set to auto, because it's not something I find fun at all. Not sure if WRC 9 and 10 have it or not.
For those who never played a rally sim (sim-like), I personally would recommend WRC 8,9 or 10 options because there easier to get into and play for newbis.
I just picked up NHL2K10, MLB The Show 13, Tiger Woods Golf, and Gran Turismo 5 for my PS3 from a local pawn shop. I think I paid about $25 for all of them. I'm going to give the rally racing part of Gran Turismo a try tonight. It's been a long time.
That´s quite a deal you got there LB4LB! Have fun! I still have to find a used controller for my PS3 so wont be buying any PS3 games soon. But knowing there´s a NHL game for the PS3 just makes me smile!
I got EA Sports NHL 2014 for PS3 from Amazon the other day. Thumbs are already soar.
Yes, that a good option too (Amazon), but I need a controller to see If my PS3 works. I tried It and It works (main menu) but haven´t tried It with a loaded game, and I can´t do anything In the menu without a controller.
Amazon doesn't have a lot of good choices for PS3 controllers. I bought a Voyee brand controller, and it sucks big time. I only paid $12 for it, so I'm going to keep it. I tried my old Logitech F310 game controller on my PS3 for #%&*$# and giggles, and to my surprise it works just fine. It doesn'y have any off the force feedback, but it does the job.

Pretty incredible Humble Bundle for Racing games LINK
That´s a great deal! To bad I have most of them (rFactor 2, Automobilista 2, and Assetto Corsa). Thanks though WT. All three recommended although Assetto Corsa Competizione Is better then the first AC to some.
^ Maybe this sale could help In re-activating the Motorsport users and we can get a dedicated section, as some have already suggested.
Good luck with that considering the overall decline of activity on SimHQ.
Having said that, I play F1 2021 quite a bit so I would participate in such a forum if it ever got created.
Not a forum as such but maybe a section, as we have with other subjects.
That I am aware of, we are at least 6 users, you, me, DBond, Wango Tango, rolinloop I think LB4LB too, and my guess Is that there´s a few under some rocks too.
rFactor 2, iRacing, Automobilist 2, Asseto Corsa (+ Competizione) are hitting hard lately In the hardcore sim scene, and I am sure there could be other sims, not to mention Dirt 2.0 In the WRC scene. Dirt (Codemasters) will be taking over the WRC license next year, so expect more addicts to WRC.
You see, we could be talking about this on a dedicated thread/section
I have noticed the racing related traffic on here lately, and have been mindful of the SimHQMotorsports forum having gone inactive. Weasel_Keeper has not been seen on here since December of 2020. I will be looking at setting up a Racing section here on SimHQ's forums. It may be a few days before I get to it. I'll post an announcement once it is a done deal.

OK folks, The SimHQ Motorsports forum is reactivated. I moved two threads from Community Hall down there, so that should get things started. The old picture was gone and I needed something to replace it with, so I grabbed a pic from in a thread.

I just finished my second playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 so I'll be buying Elden Ring today. I've been craving a fantasy RPG for a long time now and who the hell knows when the next Elder Scrolls will be out anyway.
Elden Ring is amazing, Panzer! Since you're new to the series don't be afraid to go off and explore more if you encounter a boss that seems insurmountable.

Thanks for the tip. I bought it and installed it and configured the graphics settings and I'll be playing it tonight. I'm sure it will look great on my 3090.
X COM 2 is pretty good. I finished it. For whatever reason I was more in to Enemy Unknown, even though I hated the missions where you had to clear the big ships or installations or whatever they were. Maybe just because it was fresh, and X COM2 was less so.
Objectively though X COM 2 is the better game. As someone once said, if Enemy Unknown was sliced bread, X COM 2 is grilled cheese.
I have zero backlogs on Epic. I only bought three games, played them, then re-bought them all on Steam once they were no longer exclusive and never went back.

I did that with only one game. I got Troy on EPIC since it was free if you claimed your copy within the first 24 hours. I then bought it on Steam a year later because I wanted to support CA and because i wanted the Steam achievements.
Amnesia: Rebirth is free this week on Epic. I've played Frictional Games earlier stuff so I'm expecting a similar experience with this one (survival/horror).
Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 on sale 72% off (5,59€)...
]
Does the game support ripping off female customers?
I would be glad just to see female customers In the shop In mini skirts xD. Ya know, me be laying down like I was fixing something under the car. Sounds like a 80´s porn movie
Seriously, the 2021 version seems to be quite complete and fun. I am thinking about It...
I would also like to know if Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 simulates the customer waiting area/lobby where you can get a really crappy cup of coffee.
Well I don´t know about the US, but here In Europe the BMW garages have great expresso coffee while you wait, and AC too. You sure as hell pay for It too when you leave!

Well I figure that if someone can afford to have a BMW then they don't have to worry about the associated costs.

Errr, not always. There´s a lot of 20 year old BMW´s mostly driven by Immigrant Muscleman's who own these cars, basically because they are well built and last long. But they don´t take there cars to official dealers.
Second hand Audi´s and BMW´s are not that expensive here In the EU, my girlfriends young girl (22) has a 20yr old Audi Quattro, and my dad had a BMW 520i from the 90´s. You can buy these for 1k, so practically anyone can have a Import here In EU. It´s the other way around here In EU.
Have a look, take the plunge and join us for some friendly and causal online sim racing at SimHQ!
AMS2 is an even better deal than what I bought it for just yesterday, it went from 10% to 25% off overnight the bastages! But yeah, an amazing simulator. See you on the track.
Made a mistake in my last post. That 30% off goes on for another week. There's other discounts that are more than 30%, that's where the 22 hours came from. So you got some time to browse and take a look still.
I bought it twice! Once on Epic since it was an exclusive and I wanted my Borderlands dammit. And then I bought it again on Steam.
My initial plan was to wait until it was on Steam since at the time I had other games to keep me busy but my best friend bought it on release since he was eager to play it coop.
It should be free by now considering the game is 17 years old. LOL
So should all the other games that age and older for that matter, and there not are they? ArmA CWS, ArmA II, Gunship, Microsoft FSX and so on, so really I don´t get what´s there to laugh about.

My point is that PC games that old barely sell anymore so they might as well make them free. I'm sure EPIC will pay the developers some money in order to put the game on their service.
And by the way, take a chill pill. A lot of your posts seems somewhat "on the edge"?

Only on the edge when someone wants to freely critique a topic I posted just for the sake of it based on speculative facts, or on his own criteria.
The games I stated are still being played, some (FSX) still have a ton of add-ons sold for them. There´s so many that I won´t even bother to look for them, same goes for older games still being sold. Just because you don´t play them doesn´t mean others don´t play them or would not like to buy them as new generations discovering these old games. We can debate weather there worth It or not, but having something free Isn´t exactly very popular except for maybe Epic and It´s not like It´s free, It´s a limited time give away as GOG does sometimes.
I made a point as you say, without laughing about your opinion or trying to degrade anyone. As for a lot of my post, which have been maybe a few lately. I just don´t accept Intrusive narcissism from anybody. So let´s be respectful with others opinion and mindful that we don´t all think alike.
Oh and If you think someone Is on the edge, It´s not nice to poke at him/her by laughing at something he/she thinks can be useful to others. Just saying...
I am going to get....(hoard) it, even though I have access to it on Xbox Game Pass.
It seems that you are a member of the "I have tons of free games on EPIC that I haven't played yet" club.
Absolutely. 24 of them. I'll grab them if there is even a slight chance I will play them some rainy day. I do have Borderlands 3 installed, I just haven't got around to playing it yet.
All free, except for one. I just look at it like I am accepting a whole lot of charity
All on EPIC? Wow
i honestly think i may have more, i used to think i had like50-70 games top, but when i scrolled down there were certainly more than 100,and they wont ever see a cent from me so great strategy. i foresee them in the future changing the TOA to make sure the acount is active or that you installed and played the games to keep them.
Since a few months I play a f2p game called Genshin Impact. It's available on PC, as well as some console and mobile devices.
It's an anime style open world gatcha RPG, mainly single player with some coop, but no PvP. "Gatcha" meaning apart from some starter characters your team and equipment is kinda random. You need to "pull" for characters and weapons with a currency ("primo-gems") that you get limited supply in-game like from missions or can buy. Some other equipment (artefacts and upgrading materials) are limited by some other currency (resin) that you accumulate over time (1 every 8 mins) and have limited storage, meaning you need to consume it daily. I t has some interesting combat mechanics with different moves, elements and reactions. It's got a nice main story and many sidelines, which still develop, with small updates and temporal events every couple weeks, and major updates expanding the open world every few months. If you are not pushing it, too hard the existing story and sidelines can already keep you engaged for maybe half a year.or more.
You can play it completely f2p, there is very little content locked behind a paywall, If you pay it will be mostly to get more pulls to get certain characters and/or weapons, or to accellerate the grind for some resources. .
I also made the mistake of playing it at evening time. I'll try again earlier in the day but I may just have to put this one away and simply have the memory of the first play through.
Oh come on! For maximum immersion you need to play with all of the lights turned off and headphones on so you can hear every creepy music cue and ambient sound.

I'll most likely replay the game later this year.
I wonder what it would be like to play through in 32:9.
Reading is the process of taking in the sense or meaning of letters, symbols, etc., especially by sight or touch.
For educators and researchers, reading is a multifaceted process involving such areas as word recognition, orthography (spelling), alphabetics, phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and motivation
Other types of reading and writing, such as pictograms (e.g., a hazard symbol and an emoji), are not based on speech-based writing systems. The common link is the interpretation of symbols to extract the meaning from the visual notations or tactile signals (as in the case of Braille)
Reading is typically an individual activity, done silently, although on occasion a person reads out loud for other listeners; or reads aloud for one's own use, for better comprehension. Before the reintroduction of separated text (spaces between words) in the late Middle Ages, the ability to read silently was considered rather remarkable.
Major predictors of an individual's ability to read both alphabetic and non-alphabetic scripts are oral language skills, phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming and verbal IQ.
As a leisure activity, children and adults read because it is pleasant and interesting. In the US, about half of all adults read one or more books for pleasure each year. About 5% read more than 50 books per year. Americans read more if they: have more education, read fluently and easily, are female, live in cities, and have higher socioeconomic status. Children become better readers when they know more about the world in general, and when they perceive reading as fun rather than another chore to be performed.
Is anyone else having issues with the Steam storefront main page not loading? The first time I ran Steam when the sale had started I could see the storefront like normal, window shop and search around like normal. However for the past two days every time I start steam, the storefront won't load. All I get is the Steam 3000 Summer Sale background and that's it. Just a blank empty wallpaper and no storefront. I've never had this happen before on Steam that I can recall. PC restarts, upgrading client, deleting cookies, right clicking storefront and clicking reload and so on, none of that fixes it. I can still do searches and get to game pages but not having the ability to navigate and explore like normal from the storefront and during a sale no less kind of stinks.
that makes no sense, who plays because of urgency of spending ?
You've never heard of the expression "getting your money's worth"? If you spend $70 for a game you are less likely to just leave it uninstalled in your library for months without playing it but if you got it for FREE then there is no sense of urgency in using something that you paid good money for.
I'm thinking of finally trying out Just Cause 4 which I got for free from EPIC about 8 months ago. LOL
The irony here is that since these games are free there is no rush to play them since there is no urgency of playing something you paid for.
I hear you, my steam backlog is in the hundreds now, Epic must be above 10.
But then I have sims or franchises installed for 20 years continuously (IL2 and Falcon, Arma serie, Racing games), doesn't help to move to other games.
I bought "Deathloop" on Steam. It was 60% off so I figured that was a great deal.
Deathloop is a VERY unique first person shooter experience so it's definitely not for everyone.
I got it in this month's Humble Bundle but haven't installed it yet. I have been playing some other Arkane games lately though. Finished Prey a while back and got started on Dishonored 2.

I won't go into any major spoilers but there's a "connection" between Deathloop and Dishonored.

Tried Deathloop on Xbox Gamepass, definitely not for me.
Deathloop was also included, I have to try some time but alas... I bought X4 when it was on sale last week.
I'll be curious to read your thoughts on this game if/when you decide to play it. As for me, I immediately thought of the film "A Clockwork Orange" as I explored the game world more and more. I think you'll see why if you ever play the game.
I got Vermintide 2 through the Humble Monthly and it is okay. Being a first person shooter vet, however, I was looking for far more depth in the mechanics, but really the combat amounted to little more than a single attack button or two and not much else. For an RPG I was hoping for way more personal input and a higher skill ceiling.
The games are free but it's very slow download. I downloaded a tank game, 367 MB, download time 12 hours, they only give you so much download speed. Also there is a 2 games per day limit.
Janes WW2 fighters, when it came out I didn't think a flight sim could look more realistic. It was fantastic looking for it's day. Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 evolved into the WOFF and WOTR we all know and love today.

I am blind. I didn't see it's the full game, not just a mod add on that needs a full game first. I am getting it now, 5 min ETA,. If it works, I will end the other one. Again, Thanks, Wango.
Next week it's STAR WARS: Squadrons which may be of more interest. I have no idea what it's like but for free I won't be complaining (hopefully).
I enjoyed it quite a bit when I played it on Steam.
In a nutshell, it's a space combat action game similar to the classic Larry Holland X-Wing and Tie Fighter games from the 90's. However this game is much more focused on multiplayer even though there is a short single player campaign that you can play.
Jane WWII game is very difficult. I was leading 5 BF109G to intercept a flight of Lancaster. First pass I shot down a Lancaster. Second pass I miss to avoid the Lancaster guns, then 2 Spitfires jump on me from behind.
When we made the first and second pass, there were no Spitfires in the area. Where they come from?
They also jump on my flight. One of them scream I am all shot up I am returning to base. Another one scream I am dying!
BF 109G is a beauty. I wish the graphic on the game is better cause it doesn't look like that in the game.
The original game was released in 2013 but just like DCS, there is frequent new content being made for it which includes a major graphics overhaul. The sim now is almost an entirely new game from what it was on initial release.
It is the probably the best looking WWII flight sim out there (with Campaigns) at the moment. (I can't speak for DCS, as I don't play it.) Do yourself a favor and wait until this Friday (Black Friday). Steam will most likely have the IL2-GB series on sale. I loaded up on all kinds of modules last year.
Better to buy IL2-1946 for $10 on Steam or GOG than bother with the freeware games you linked. There are fantastic mods out there. It will save you a hassle dealing with old versions of IL2 (original), when modding.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, Prime Gaming is offering WRC 9 for free. Ends in 10 days. Also Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition. Ends in 10 days.
The service seems to give away free game addons more than full games. But if You Have Amazon Prime. they are included in your membership.
It also has no career mode, no campaign mode and no single missions unless you make them yourself. DCS is really WW II "a la carte" right now and it's very far from being a sim.
NoFlyBoy. If the BF 109 is your main interest, and you want a dynamic campaign, Wings Over The Reich is the answer. It might not be as pretty as the IL-2 GB series, (it still looks very good, and will get better) but it more than makes up with it in game play. Strictly a singleplayer sim. It is an excellent price too. OBD is switching their attention to WOTR. There is a Battle Of France addon coming shortly. OBD spend many years lovingly working on the WWI, Wing Over Flanders Fields sim. It is very highly regarded in the flight sim community. WOTR has a very bright future.
I agree with Wango Tango. As a very inexperienced beginner, I have found the game to be of excellent quality and the forum very helpful and tolerant of my noobie questions.

I bought it and was disappointed. No campaign. Nice to fly over, lots of planes to set up for flights, but I was really hoping for some campaigns.
I'll wait till is goes on a good Steam sale. Better than %20. I have all the other campaign modules, but I bought then at 75 to 80% off. There is not enough RAF content (overall, not BON) which is what interests me.
I just grabbed Star Wars: Squadrons and for some reason Epic keeps giving me an error whilst trying to install the EA app (which I understand used to be called Origin).

Anyone else having problems?
I had no issues. Installed Epic, and had to install EA app to download the game.
It asked me to link both profiles, after installing and logging in EA App. No problems. Perhaps an anti virus or firewall issue ? Try making an exception for both Epic and EA app.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is $5 on Steam right now.
Also, Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam. This version is a bit different as it has actual graphics. Might be worth looking into for those of you (me included) that were turned off by the ASCII graphics of the original.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is $5 on Steam right now.
.
I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel which should be out sometime in 2023. Hands down it's the best Star Wars shooter I've played (1st person and 3rd person).
I had the EPIC client for a while but uninstalled it after I realized that the few games I claimed for free were games that I was never really interested in playing. There's a case to be made about paying for a game actually motivating you to play it!
True. Sometimes I use the EGS client to test those free games and then just buy them on Steam if I like them
That being said, with two young children, free games that we can all play is easier on the pocketbook. My kids like Bloons, so this will be something nice for them.
I already own the game on Epic but not the Director's Cut. I'm not too far into the game but I'd describe it as more than a walking simulator (so far). Time will tell.

He was being sarcastic I'm sure. Probably boring compared to some of the fast paced RPG's he is in to.
The game is not showing up in my library, although Epic says I own it now.
Directors cut was a mistake apparently. A ton of people managed to grab it before Epic swapped it out for the original. I just reinstalled Epic again and downloading now. I've had it on my Steam wishlist for ages now...but free is best
Like most Hideo Kojima games, Death Stranding is full of cutscenes. The turning point of Death Stranding takes place at around two hours into the game, and the longest sequence without player inputs is a whopping 31 minutes long. The game is well-reviewed, either in spite of or because of its extended film sequences.
Yup, I just had to go through it again as the save from the std edition doesn't work with the Director's Cut. Luckily I hadn't go too far so I'll quickly catch up.
To me the cutscenes are like watching a movie, it's that well done and there are plenty of 'guest stars' in it and the story is interesting.
In the end though, it's free and I can't complain.
*WT, it will tell you if you have the Director's Cut if you hover over the game in the Library. I also got the artbook which is a separate install.
Looks like I have the standard edition. I just played about an hour and a half. I think you are right Chucky, you have to look at it as a story. I was playing with a gamepad, and it would time out during the cutscenes. haha So far I am enjoying it. The price was definitely right.
Actually according to Epic, I've played 2 hours and 35 minutes. So it has definitely entertained me so far. Good story, and I like the music.
I find it interesting how others view gaming and I mean for some people video games is PlayStation/Xbox what-have-you or whatever your age appropriate knowledge of gaming is, could be Ms.Pac Man ? But Home PC games are it seems unknown territory and I have a little of everything I can access in minutes Retro to Sci-fi or History to Fantasy and I kinda prefer it to TV sometimes.. If we have VR now could Holo games be far behind? Happy New Year!
Same here. I've grown rather fond of being involved in my entertainment rather than passively consuming it. Not that there aren't time that I'd rather veg out and watch something, but on the whole I do prefer to play a game.
No GTA that I can see. There is a typing RPG though, so I am interested in checking out. Might be good to use to encourage my children to learn to type, but I will check it out first.
You must be joking Panzer! I have about 200+ in my Epic account. I only have Death Stranding and a Star Wars game installed and I doubt I'll ever play the latter again
One does not simply play all their old, free games, games they would never have bought in the first place. It is a barren wasteland... not with 10,000 gamers could you do this.
You must be joking Panzer! I have about 200+ in my Epic account. I only have Death Stranding and a Star Wars game installed and I doubt I'll ever play the latter again
So in other words you'll be long dead before you get to play all of those free games.
Most games I try I grow bored with very quickly. Occasionally I'll find a gem, though, that grabs me good. The more complicated and emergent the gameplay systems are, the better.
Most games I try I grow bored with very quickly. .
It's rare that I play a game that fails to grab me but that's exactly what happened to me with Steel Division II. I can't quite put my finger on it but I found the gameplay to be uninspiring. I may give it a shot again later on to see if my impressions change.
It sure is, and it's an excellent sim. I drove races 2 and 3 (Australia and Miami) of my current My Team career last night, which is in the fifth season. This series has the best career modes in the racing sim genre and it's not close. At that price it's a steal.
I guess it's over today, but I bought PGA Tour 2K23 in the Steam Spring Sale for about 20 bucks.
Dying Light Enhanced Edition is currently free on Epic.
I highly recommend the Dying Light games to anyone who is a fan of the zombie survival genre. I'm still playing Dying Light 2 and enjoying it quite a bit.
I enjoyed this one quite a bit since I put over 100 hours into it. I just wish they would have fleshed out the multiplayer a bit more to include more cooperative options.
I have this game but have never played. How good is it?
X4 keeps sucking me back in. I have all the expansions, and essentially X4 is Eve offline.
I ask about BSG, because X4 is a combination of Wing Commander/Freespace, Freelancer, Sins of a Solar Empire, Mechwarrior(think customization of ships, not battle robots), Sim City and more. Hard to explain. You're in a living, breathing universe, where you're free to choose your path and no playthrough is ever the same. There's plenty of fleet combat as the game goes on, as well.
The difference, however, is the events aren't canned or pre-planned. You decide if there is strategic significance to an encounter, or even a campaign you feel is of value. You don't select a campaign--you look at the flow of the game world and decide where you might be needed, or what may need to be done--to benefit yourself and your own empire, or perhaps other factions, or even for more nefarious reasons. So when you do engage with enemies, or even fleets, every moment has meaning. Your ships cost you time, blood, sweat and tears. Crewmembers may have been with you from the start, and they take sometimes a great amount of time to cultivate and train up in rank and effectiveness. Every single loss and victory matters. There's honestly nothing else like the game except perhaps Eve, which I have not played, except in X4 you can fly every ship, walk in every cockpit, and even exit your ships and walk around stations or float in space. I can be a pilot in the fray, fighting for the survival of my fleet in a fighter or bomber, or I can be the admiral on the bridge, or the CEO from afar, watching from satellite relay.
So the point is--the space combat has to be amazing. That's why I ask. I sometimes want to try BSG, but I even have a mod that adds the BSG ships into X4, so I can fly the carrier, battleships, etc. and now the Viper, with(I believe) authentic weapons.
I have this game but have never played. How good is it?
.
It's good but it's limited. By that I mean if you are looking for multiplayer space battles it's quite fun and in-depth with some good variety between the different ships and weapons. The single player campaign has a simple crappy storyline that some high school creative writing student could have done and the voice acting is atrocious. The single player campaign simply lacked immersion.
Metro: Last Light Complete Edition currently free on Steam.
Great game and it was the first game I played that taught me to hoard any and all available ammo and to use it as sparingly as possible. I was frequently running out of ammo the first time I played the game.
Currently free on the Epic Store - Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition.
Good game. I bought it for 5 bucks during a Steam sale several years ago. I put well over 200 hours into the game so I definitely got my money's worth!

Cannot get it to run, keeps saying that I'm missing a dll that I actually have even though it isn't part of Win 7, I have tried every fix and none have worked and I'm well above the minimums.

That is very odd because I was on WIN 7 when I played the game and it worked just fine.
My last playthrough I either didn't have or the DLCs weren't out yet, so I cannot comment on whether or not they're worth it. My guy says for only a buck fifty more it probably is.

Played a couple of hours of this but it didn't "grab" me. I'll try it again later after I've finished a couple of other games.
Someone should conduct a poll on how many free games people on SimHQ have and how many of them have still not been played.
Out of 201 games I have on Epic, I've only put decent time into 3. Death Stranding, Elite:Dangerous and Tacoma. 90% probably have never been played. I used to grab all the free games, nowadays I just get games that I least have a chance of playing...one day.
GOG has a game called "Helium Rain" for free. It looks like a relaxing, fun and simple space exploring game. I found it by chance by scrolling the upcoming titles at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure why but GOG sometimes makes it difficult to find some of the free games they give away.
It's also free on Steam if that's your preferred platform. I've owned it for quite a while but didn't put too many hours into it. Imagine a 'budget' Elite:Dangerous (Combat/trading/exploration) where you build up your space company.
I just noticed GOG has for free the game "Betrayer". It hasn't been on Steam in years but somehow it showed up on GOG and for free. I have it on Steam and its a pretty good FPS/Adventure game but what makes its stand out is its setting and unique gameplay. Its Colonial era America with great sound effects and some spooky enemies and an interesting story told through silent discussions with characters and notes. It was designed to be played in black and white but they added a color slider years ago. Just listening to the game is engaging and necessary for being alerted to enemies or points of interest. Weapons include ranged crossbows, bows and arrows, black powder weapons and a sabre, throwing tomahawk and black powder bombs. Its a pretty cool little gem but requires a little patience as exploration of the levels needed to complete objectives.
Currently free on Epic - Deliver Us Mars. If it's as good as Deliver Us The Moon it should be worth it. (well it's free so it's worth it if you like that sort of game).
Star Citizen is free to play til the end of November, I missed the news Nov15-30 but I'll give it a go and see if it runs on my system. Deliver us Mars, Free to Own on Epic this week. Currently playing and I liken it to Laura Croft on Mars. It's pretty cool and it's a top tier game.
Your reaction was perfectly logical given the way I wrote it, and I put the responsibility for this misunderstanding squarely on my own shoulders. I would have indeed done the same. I'm kinda new here.

I boughtt Dune Spice Wars on sale. If you like RTS games and you are a fan of the Dune universe I highly recommend it.
To this day I have never seen the movies or read any of the Dune books. I am definitely a Sci-fi nerd but something about this series just does not appeal to me.

Wheels
Same, except I have seen bits of the movie here and there. Meh
It's just like everything else. Not everything will float everyone's boat even when it is widely popular. To this day I've not seen a single episode of Breaking Bad, The Sopranos or The Wire. The subject matter just doesn't interest me.
Breaking Bad is a top 5 all time best tv series ever.
Even if one's viewing taste is not of the genre, the series is so well-crafted, it is a good watch. I personally rate it as one of the best drama series ever, up there with 'Band of Brothers'.
Thanks Wormfood, this Is one of the better 40k unknown gems for PC.
Some of my recommendations on sale...
METRO Bundle (84% off) a steal if you don´t have any. METRO Bundle GOG
Dragon´s Dogma: Dark Arisen (84% off) Just one of the greatest open world RPG´s, that´s all I´ll say. Dragon´s Dogma DA GOG
Kenshi (55% off) What can I say, as someone's title says, "so deep you can drown In It" You have to play It to see! Kenshi GOG
Sea Dogs: City of Abandoned Ships 49% off) There´s some talk In the Age of Sail thread. Sea Dogs CoAS GOG
Wasteland Remastered (90% off) Well you all know about this one, or should haha. Wasteland RM GOG
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord (40% off) This Is what I just started playing this week (Steam version), I like It, It´s Immersive and looks nice. I also love how the combat works. It still has some quirks from what some users state, but It´s far more polished and playable then It´s Initial release. Then you have the mods that fix some of the parts that still need a bit of work. Overall It´s one of those game that you can get lost In, and has a good replay value. Mount & Blade II GOG
I love Warband, and I also adore Bannerlord. There's a couple things Warband does better:
Feasts (that interminable butterlord!)
Warzones (procedurally generated battle areas that are always different)
But there's many things Bannerlord does better such as graphics. Both are amazing games, and anyone who has avoided them should give them a shot. They are basically a modern version of "Defender of the Crown," but amped up on steroids.
GOG has The Beast Inside free for the next ~60 hours. I'm completely unfamiliar with this one as I've never heard of it until now. Seems to be some sort of horror/mystery game. https://www.gog.com/en/game/the_beast_inside

Red2112, that football game looks cool, thanks. I'm not a football fan by any means, but retro football games are actually pretty fun, and that looks like the work of people who are really passionate about their project.
For the rest of you, some of you might remember the old Sea Dogs series...here is a totally free version of the newest release coming up! The story mode costs money, but for us free roamers, the free price tag is pretty sweet:
It looks old, but not in a bad way, and it is pretty immersive. The music is rotten, but as it is all MP3 files in a folder, you can replace with whatever you like, or just go silent. The writing is also not super, but once again, it's free, and I think that the text can be edited if you have hours to spare!

Glad you liked It. Yes, It actually beats all the new stuff IMO, but there Is a learning curve when It comes to the controls. You might also want to check out Pro Strategy Football 2023 (link below). I have the 2022 version, but In the 23 version they added better player animations and now 23 cost the same as 22, as theirs a newer 2024 version out. You can mod any of them and add official teams and such. Not much of a football fan myself, but was when I was a teen when the Buccaneers just came out (orange outfit), and well both of these games tickle my Football needs when I miss that Steam: Pro Strategy Football 2023 Steam store
As for Sea Dogs, I just bought Corsairs Legacy some days ago, and have been tracking the new stuff, and playing the old stuff too. I opened a Age of Sail thread (bottom forum) with more Info.
Dakar Desert Rally is free on Epic this week if that's your thing.
I'm at the minimums to play this but it runs pretty good, and looks beautiful. It has three skill levels of play from a forgiving Sport Mode to full on Simulation where you have to Navigate to each Checkpoint. Worth it just to free roam or compete.
How many of you here still have a huge backlog of unplayed free games?
I have a handful that I have installed played a little and then uninstalled, and a few that are unable to run on my rig but if I upgrade I still own them..

Thanks Chucky! Good one, specially If It´s free! I have the older version, IIRC It´s the 2018 version? Anyhow, a bit of a pain to figure out how the RoadBook works, at least In the older version.

Let me know what you think of the game after you've put a few hours into it. I tried several times to get into it but the game simply didn't draw me in.

I so wanted to like this game, love the era and graphics are great but couldn't get used to the combat - I found it awkward and left me cold. I may try again if it has been perfected.

Eh, the combat takes a little bit of practice. After getting the hang of things fairly well, I feel KCD combat is quite a bit more realistic in implementation than other first person medieval games. There's a soldier outside of the southeastern town you can practice with, and after about an hour of clanging blades you should have things down.
Best advice: Buy the best weapons possible, before armor. The top dollar longsword was a game changer, and always remember to use war axes against armored foes.
I've only played KCD once, one year after release. That was what, five years ago now? Good grief.
But anyway, my comments at the time were that KCD had the best melee combat I've ever used in a video game. And what really impressed me was how progression is done. The way my character improved along with Henry's narrative, from a blacksmith's son with no training to the best swordfighter in the land. It isn't just a matter of git good, but the synergy between practice, acquiring new moves and understanding. It all meshed in such a natural and believable way.

Just make sure you have the stats for it. If you're strength and dex aren't up to snuff you're gonna suffer a penalty and flail around like a fool.

Seems more like my ineptitude then! May fire it up and give another chance on the Series X over Easter, cheers.
Feels like a decent game but can already tell the combat will take a bit of getting used to, which isn't a bad thing. Just got my first training session from the bailiff, won the archery but lost the swordfight so didn't win Hans's bow.
The game has gotten a huge shot from the TV series and there's a stampede of new players. Check it out and join Panzer, Wigean and myself in the wasteland.

I was up last night till four In the morning watching the series! The series Is a bit meh.. what can I say. But Isn´t the series based on Fallout 4, which Is also on sale?
Maybe yeah? Haven't watched it, but my take is it is based on the Fallout IP, not any one game and even then it takes license. Regardless, both games have seen a huge shot of new players as a result of the show.

I'm curious. What did you not like? Was it the overall story or maybe the characters aren't that interesting? I'll post my mini-review on Saturday after I've seen a couple of episodes.

I haven´t played the game so I can´t judge If the series Is representative of the game and how good It does on that. As a sci-fi series on It´s self, and as a adult viewer that I am, I found It a bit childish and overly violent. I even felt sad for the young viewers that would watch It. It reminded me a bit of some of the 80´s 90´s movies like Scanners, or Re-animator, they weren´t terribly bad for their time but not just quite for a mature audience In my opinion.
I just think that In 2024, there could be better sci-fi movies, but again this one Is based on a game, so It´s limited In what It wants to express. The story Is not bad, as a sci-fi story and hits some "could be" scenarios like the bomb, the vault and the cult but It´s presentation Is childish for a movie (representative of the game). I found the acting ok, In some cases a bit sterile or lifeless, but then so are some of the scenarios, so a bit sour at times. I found It light as a movie, with emphasis on dismemberment for Impact, typical of a class B movie. The protagonist does a nice job, not great but better than others, I like her.
I am at chapter 6 and It´s Is starting to get more Interesting now because things are starting to unfold which In turn makes It more serious as a story and overall movie. The actors now also seem to have more Impact on where and why of their doings/feelings. Will see how It goes tonight. Can´t say I am a movie guru so mind my opinion here.

Thanks for this mini review. I've played 3 & 4 but I'm an amateur compared to others here. I wonder if people who play it will find it better or worse from the playing experience?

Yeah, that´s the question... will I find It different after playing the game.
One thing Is for sure, They sure got the attention of those who haven´t played the game, because now I am curious as to how It will compare and will buy the game! Darn marketing!!!
Man I was having a good time playing Vargus, now I got side track AGAIN! I hate It LOL!
