My latest binge watching addiction: SOA

My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/12/16 07:10 PM

Sons of Anarchy.
I never paid attention to this show before. I'm just not impressed with thug life, choppers etc. so I figured I'd hate it.
Still, I gave it a chance and I can't help but stay up entirely too late every night watching it. It's as complex as the Godfather, being about organized crime with some twisted sense of a social conscience. The characters are much more complex though, the benefit of tv. I'll have to give the Sopranos a chance next.

The performances of the main characters are among the best on tv, the writing is excellent and the story compelling from week to week. There haven't been any "dud", filler episodes building up to other events way down the road. Every episode DELIVERS one way or the other. The total opposite of Walking Dead in that respect. The story and characters develop constantly.
Started season 3 last night after blowing through the first 2 seasons in a week. I'm glad there are 7 seasons to stretch it out.

Is that on to stream anywhere other than the syfy website? I'd like to go back to it.
Still $20 for the season on amazon.

I have it available via Comcast VOD.

Loved SOA.

Characters are really well written and acted amazingly well.

Interesting to see the progression (evolution/devolution) of some of the characters as well.

It is definitely more than just a 'thug life' sort of show for sure.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/12/16 09:47 PM

I'm just starting season 3 and enjoying it as much as everyone did apparently. Not being afraid to kill off familiar characters keeps the viewer off balance, and the comedic scenes are judged perfectly (Half-Sack and Chucky, I'm looking at you).

I only started watching it after I realised it was Amazon Prime for free, shortly after I'd finished the Lost & Damned MC DLC for GTA IV, which was a blast and seems to borrow heavily from SOA

The last few of season 2 were amazing. The first episode with Chucky and his habit had me rolling. LOL

I'm rewatching this as well but on bluray. I'm in the middle of season 2.

Never understood why Opie has problems killing one man when he blew up a bunch of white supremist a few episodes before.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/14/16 06:39 AM

When and where is the latest X-Files tv show located? I finished Longmire early this year(awesome show) and I finished The Crown which was pretty good and well done. I need a new show to watch and I'm kind of in a sci-fi mood. I enjoyed Broadchurch but I'm having difficulty getting into some of the other BBC crime dramas. I watched one called Injustice which I liked way early in the year. I need to find The Musketeers somewhere as I bought the first and second season and loved them. Its a good swashbuckler show and I like the actors. I'm always, always in the mood for thriller/mystery type movies.(not crime dramas necessarily but definitely thriller/creepy/mysterious/supernatural) If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Try "The Man from High Castle" now going into it's second season on Amazon Prime Video.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/14/16 07:06 PM

Noticed a Married With Children reference the other night in season 3.
For plot reasons, Gemma is on the run. They suggest she should color her hair red. She says she'd rather shave her head. LOL
The show has just the right amount of humor to it. And good day, bad day...Jax is pretty much always going to get some no matter the situation.

Speaking of X Files, Mitch Pileggi is on there too. I still see him as Skinner no matter what.

SOA trivia: just noticed that the voice of John Teller is Todd "I don't know Margo!" Chester from Christmas Vacation.
Also, the Deadwood cast members popping up is pretty cool. It's pretty common to see more than one in the same show it seems.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/14/16 08:06 PM

Okay thanks. When I searched Netflix all I saw were the older X-Files series. Did they just add the new ones to the end of that? How do I tell where the new show is? "The Man from High Castle" does look good. BTW, does anyone know the status of the new Twin Peaks? Is that next year?

Season 3 of Twin Peaks will premiere sometime in the first half of 2017 but on Showtime. It is not a Netflix show.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 03:34 AM

Oh dang. Thanks PM. Maybe its one I can buy on DVD. Does SoA have a lot of HBO-like profanity and sex? Its not one that intrigues me in the least bit but RK makes it sound like its written and done very well. I also want to Try Rome and Spartacus but I'm one of those types that gets depressed and weary with too much sex and language. Gore I'm okay with lol or just a little sexiness. I just hate watching orgy and rape scenes.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 03:48 AM

It was on AMC channel so no on the Nudity and limited swearing but the violence and torture is pretty brutal even with the gore toned down.
More like Breaking Bad, you see the blood but you don't see the aftermath.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 04:52 AM

Yeah, not HBO, but as close as cable will get. A lot of implied sex and near saves with camera angles. It's not for kids in any way, but a tiny fraction of what you got with Spartacus. Spartacus was practically soft porn that makes Game of Thrones look like Golden Girls. LOL
With 7 seasons of SOA, might want to stream if uncertain before investing.

I still don't understand why so many people made such a big deal over the sex in GOT. When I finally got around to watching the show I was like "THIS is what was causing all of the controversy??". There are a ton of cable shows that came out before GOT that had just as much or more sexual content.

I heard the creator of the show call it "a modern day Hamlet"

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 03:18 PM

I can see the parallel. Jax father's ghost is in the form of his manuscript, things like that.
I'm noticing something a little supernatural too. There's a homeless woman that I thought was odd that would show up more than once that Katey Sagal's character made a note of that seemed familiar. It was really weird last night when watching and I spotted her in one of the Ireland based episodes.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 08:06 PM

heh I thought the depiction of Belfast was odd. It was like something out of the 1950s. It's not *that* bad there wink

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/15/16 08:52 PM

Surely it must've been on location, they changed the theme song to a celtic sound and everything. LOL
I'm kind of glad to get those over with now, it was dragging on.

Forgive me for asking here but I absolutely can not find the new X-Files on Netflix. I don't know if its that I just don't know my way around but I can't find it at all. All I see when I do a search are the original 9 series. No other X-Files things come up. Is it called something else?

Oh are you looking for "season 10" that aired early this year? I don't think that's on Netflix yet.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/16/16 07:55 PM

Try Fox's website directly. Most channels have recent series available to stream from there. You'll get commercials most likely but at least they're there.

Yes, the ones that aired in Jan 2016 will likely be there if they're not on Netflix. I've not checked Amazon.

we were very late to the Games of Thrones series, GF bought the first 5 seasons on Ebay and we watched them and then Season 6 in 4 weeks...

Now I'm finishing going through them a 2nd time because there is just so much info going on. By far the best series after Band of Brothers.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/19/16 06:27 PM

I'm interested in GoT but I have a question. Would it be considered high or low fantasy? I've seen clips of the naked lady with pet dragons but I don't recall seeing magic and such. Is it mostly a medieval type period? Though I love LOTR and the like I'm more in the mood for more realistic medieval themes lately than over the top fantasy.
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/19/16 06:36 PM

There's magic, but it's more subtle and not day to day. It does more in the supernatural sense, or rare races. Hard to explain. To me, it feels like a world where magic is leaving it, becoming more mundane, but I have no basis for that.
Posted By: PanzerMeyer

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/19/16 06:39 PM

The magic in GOT is minimal. Even less than in LOTR in my opinion.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/19/16 07:06 PM

Not magic, but witchcraft, curses, and good ole fashion fire breathing dragons.

Tried to watch it Saturday, but wife interrupted the first 2 minutez, so already completely lost. Even more lost than last season and will have to start over.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 12/19/16 09:41 PM

Yes, I would say it's Gandalf-level magic in GoT.

There are certain instances where it comes to the fore, such as with the Red Priests and such, but usually it's more oblique.

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 01/10/17 10:40 PM

Finished SOA a few days ago. What a relief!
It was well written until the end, but watching the characters decline, use people until they couldn't use them any more, lie to themselves and others, destroy relationships, endure prison (YIKES)...it was difficult to stick with. The selfishness was out of control. Very bleak.

I would've stopped watching but I wanted to see the story through. It's just a show, but it will make you thankful for the life you get to lead. LOL
Definitely a PSA to stay in school, avoid a life of crime and by all means NEVER GO TO PRISON.
Also it reminded me of how cheap words like family, love and brother have become. The characters in the show used them all the time but really had no idea what they meant.
Very sad show, ultimately.

Now, Marco Polo is shaping up. I wish the 3rd season hadn't been cancelled, but it's worth watching.
Also watching Justified (on Prime). It's really good too and with a lot of seasons to go through.

Are you kidding me ? Loved Marco Polo and watched the first 2 season 2 times now waiting for the 3rd.

I just hope Longmire does not get canceled, the entire reason I started Netflix again. Had not used it
since the DVD rental days.

I thought about the same as I watched the entire series and was going to say something when you started the thread, but I usually
see things different than most.

Thought the show was interesting the first couple of seasons, then became a very depressing soap opera for biker gangs.
But I couldn't stop watching it..
Posted By: Raw Kryptonite

Re: My latest binge watching addiction: SOA - 01/11/17 12:41 AM

The odd thing about the show is that they didn't really seem like bikers who actually liked their bikes.
The obligatory Harley, but they were all new, almost exactly alike, showed no personalization and they never worked on them.
Just transportation and image.

Marco Polo is pretty amazing. I assume it's the budget that killed it? The sets and wardrobe must be killer. I assume they had to film on foreign locations for some of the scenes.
I'd never thought much about the man, but this has got me interested in reading up some. Pretty amazing life and from what I've glanced over, the show seems to follow his story fairly well.

Longmire...never finished the first Netflix original season. Just didn't feel right after the regular show was so incredible. It felt forced. Maybe I'll give it another go, but more likely start from the beginning.

Exactly. The number of people watching it didn't justify what Netflix was spending to produce the show.

As for Longmire, I read that it just recently started or is about to start its final season. I guess we'll see what Katee Sackhoff does next. smile
