Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/06/15 12:07 AM

Not much info yet. But that certainly isn't a fighter plane.

Looks like it was a very nice plane. Hope he is OK.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to Photoshop the Millennium Falcon on a golf course!

That wouldn't be a Jack Ryan PT-22, would it...?

His son, Ben, tweeted that Harrison is OK, so that at least is some good news.

Glad he's ok. Good spot to crash I guess where there are doctors.

Near a hospital or at a golf course.

He reported engine failure before dropping in. The glide ratio of that old plane is not
much better then a brick to. Glad he is ok.

He was flying a WW II vintage plane... okay.

Each time a rich famous person is hurt or killed in a single engine turbo prop plane crash, I always wonder why with all that $ they have they don't buy/rent a 2 engines planes.

Like JFK Jr, they all go piling up in a little one engine plane and fly in bad weather when JFK Jr surely can afford to rent or buy a 2 or 3 engine turbo prop or jet.

Apparently he's been flying since the 60's. They said he crashed a chopper a few years back and walked away. Must not be too bad of a pilot. Glad he's ok, hope that's really the case.

Never turn to try to get back to the field. A lesson still being learnt from the beginning of powered flight (its what killed McCudden, who himself used to drill this into new pilots). Pity to see such a nice crate wrecked. Glad the pilot seems to be okay.

Maybe, despite being "a rich and famous person", he simply enjoys flying single-engine, vintage planes? He most likely was up on a joyride, not going anywhere on a business trip.

Glad he's ok, and the plane - at first glace - also seems to be salvageable.

What does the number of engines have to do with JFK Jr's crash? What he really needed was less than 17(?) flight instructors, more hours and most of all, an IFR rating.

Or perhaps he just shouldn't have declined his (then current) instructor's offer to ride along.

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/06/15 12:27 PM

Twin engines are not as safe as you think. If you fail to correctly gather it all up when you lose one, it will kill you more surely than losing the engine in a single. I just lost a flying acquaintance who was transitioning from single to twin about three months ago at Zephyr Hills. Was doing engine out procedures, and got it wrong.
Posted By: oldgrognard

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/06/15 12:30 PM

E has it right. Kennedy pushed the weather decision and it bit him. Being in a twin wouldn't have changed that.

Gotta tighten them shoulder straps a little more Mr. Harrison...but otherwise not too shabby.

Shame about clipping a tree...should have gone for the long par five!

Oh, and on turning around - he was at altitude when he requested it, so it wasn't the "kill me" of the 180 while ascending from the strip.

That, and if it was a fuel-related problem like is often the case (properly maintained engines rarely stop working), then 2 engines wouldn't have changed anything.

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/06/15 06:17 PM

Never know what the other options were for putting it down. Pushing it to a golf course was pretty good for an open area not densely populated. I doubt it was an accident, but lucky to make it. The videos I've seen of him on the way down were shot from neighborhoods obviously near by where things could've been much worse for other people as well as himself.

Chewie was also not any good at repairing anything on the Millenium Falcon or keeping anything maintained and working.

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/06/15 07:50 PM

I chuckled a bit when Harrison Ford invited Robert Mason (Chickenhawk) to fly his chopper and thought he was rubbish.

Glad he made it ok! But with Bruce getting cancer and recovering and this, the next guy is going down permanently.

1. California.

2. Plane Piloted by deep pocket famous pilot.

Sadly there will be at least 5 frivolous lawsuits filed by mid next week, heck a class action for the "People of the Peoples Republic of Santa Monica" wouldn't surprise me at all. sigh

From what I have read so far he did a GREAT job bringing the bird down and walking away, I am very glad he's ok and no one else was hurt.

I wonder how much time he had in type? Was it his plane?

Oh. a +1 to the folks who said two engines are not the magic cure all for safety. Again, as others have said, an inexperienced pilot or one not fully up to speed in type might just be better off dead sticking an engine out single.

Posted By: oldgrognard

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/07/15 12:41 AM

We don't know if he did a great job or not. It appears that he didn't screw-up. Made the call to the controller. Announced his intentions. Put down in what was almost certainly the best choice. Put it down and survived. But that's about all we know.

All kinds of rumors. I've heard that the engine failed at approx 3,000 feet.

The investigation will tell.

He lived, no one else died and minimal property damage in an engine out situation in a VERY densely populated area. Qualifies as Great Job to me with what we know now. But yeah, not much hard info beyond that at this point.

His "spokesperson" already used the lame/ignorant "his engine stalled" line. rolleyes

HONEST!

Some funny and priceless comments here:

http://twitchy.com/2015/03/05/never-tell-me-the-odds-the-harrison-ford-jokes-begin-photoshops/

All joking aside for a minute, regarding my comment about I rather have a 2 or 3 engine aircraft if I had the $ to rent/buy an aircraft;

I am not a pilot. The only time I have been on an aircraft is when I fly commercial.

I was just going by basic logic: better to have 2 engines instead of just one in case of mechanical failure.

I didn't know about all the other thing people here mentioned regarding that sometimes having more than one engine is not going to make a difference.

Posted By: Wireman

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/07/15 01:41 PM

I'd rather two or more. It's just a matter of taste and experience.
Posted By: Dart

Re: Harrison Ford injured in plane crash - 03/07/15 05:32 PM

Two engines doubles your opportunity for trouble, IMHO. The flip side of redundancy is that now one has two systems that can malfunction rather than just one. Losing one engine in a twin on takeoff sounds like a bigger deal than Whisper Mode.

Our twin pilot types can correct me and I'll listen intently. My experience is in light (Champs) aircraft that are forgiving gliders.

Some of the media stuff is hilarious, like the reporter that commented that older planes tend to have more problems mechanically than newer ones. I'll take a '46 Champ that's been maintained well and regularly flown over a decade old Carbon Cub that's rarely flown and sits in a hangar most of the year, ignored.

It's not like technology for piston engines has evolved from the late 1940's very much. It's all still the same magnetoes and carburators and the same engine models coming off the factory line since then.

Harrison Ford is an official Good Guy in the Aviation world. His contributions to both AOPA and the EAA go beyond the financial. He's the spokesman for the General Aviation Serves America campaign and served as the chairman for EAA's Young Eagle Program. And hands out the Harrison Ford Legacy in Aviation award. wink
