If you are using firefox, all you need to do is hit the little triangle next to the google search button and manage search engines index will show up on the bottom. You can choose which ever search engine you want to use.

Can i not just totally block ask.com so anything related to it is ignored ?

Have you checked your add-ons and plug-ins and disabled ?

get something called greasemonkey for firefox or chrome, then search the greasemonkey for a google site blocking script. you'll then be able to disable any site you want.
i have mine set to automatically disable results from groups.google.com - absolutely useless tripe from 1994 - why the hell do i need ancient results when searching for current tech problems. ridiculous google.
