He sure can. A lot of people think that James Earl Jones has the most distinctive voice in the business and it is very impressive but Morgan Freeman can not only project but can portray emotion like few voice actors can.
My favorites are Shawshank, Miss Daisey and Glory which I think all called for an actor who could make you believe he was the person he was portraying.
He had a great part in a little known film about So. Africa called The Power of One. It took me a few minutes to realize it was him when I saw the film since he was not top billed and it was a relatively small part.
Shawshank, Unforgiven, Glory, Robin Hood, Driving Miss Daisy were my picks and there isn't one performance out of those 5 that I would say outshines the other. He did all of the roles superbly and I can't say that he kept giving the same performance for each character. To me they are different people even though the same actor played all the parts.
To me Freeman's first memorable role was as the violent prisoner kept in solitary confinement until he was released by the new reform Warden played by Robert Redford in the interesting 1980 film Brubaker.
You didn't have Lucky Number Slevin so I had to pick Driving Ms Daisy as my last choice. I hate to admit but that probably is one of his better movies even if it's not my cup of tea.......

I don't remember that part at all. Well it hassss been a long time....
Long time for me too but I remember Redford tells one of the trustees to get a bunch of sunglasses because these prisoners in solitary had been kept in darkness while in there.
Here is another beautiful moment from that movie with Freeman narrating. The prose is so exquisitely balanced between the beauty of the moment and the reality of the situation:
