I can see this thread not going over too well, the paranoia some have about online identity.
Not such a big worry compared to what I've seen on some other forums. Like superimposing of heads and bodies in places they maybe should not be. LOL

If I look irritable, it's because this little twerp (my grand-daughter) decided to enter the world about 3 in the morning. I was pretty tired.
Teaching my son to drive. Ease up on the clutch while pressing gently down on the accelerator, kid.
And this is me helping survey the damage of last summer's floods here in Texas. Normally, there's cliff about ten feet behind me and this sign that drops about 15 feet into the water. That's how much it came up.

Well, it's not German, but my Father's side of the family, who came from Norway, wanted to name me Olaf! My Mother's side of the family is Irish/Scottish, so they went w/ Shaun...
Which, for anyone around from the time (1977), was inspired by the John Lennon song of the same name...
So, I was actually named after John Lennon's son...
True story...

At Gettysburg! Cool! Last time I was there was a lot of fun and quite the learning experience. I have family that are on the PA Monument there. When I told my driver that, he told me if I could point them out on the Monument he'd give me a tour like none he'd given before. He took me to the Monument straight away, I showed him their names, and I was in for a treat! Their unit was at Little Round Top and wow, just wow, the tour I got. Hope yours was as good Weas!

Dude, Little Round Top is my favorite area, and the back side where the 20th Maine held the flank up to running out of ammo and fixing bayonettes...and still held. I've been to Gettysburg about three or four times and I still get chills. My wife's dad is buried at Gettysburg National Cemetary (WWII and Korean War vet). What was really cool was last time when I took my 14 year old daughter. She'd just learned about the Civil War in school so she was actually interested...yay!

Here's a pic from a few weeks ago at the local Renaissance Faire. I got tired of of the whole "Let's dress up medieval and go to the Faire" thing so I decided I was going to hang out with the primitive screw-ups as "Ash" from the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness movies.
With some barbarians:
Spanish knight:
War cry before charging the Army of Darkness:
Heh, the boom-stick fires caps, the chainsaw makes a buzzing noise and screaming sounds and vibrates and the Necronomicron screams when you poke the eye and has the texture of skin. Fun!

Underneath each one should be things like, 'happy', 'sad', 'homicidal'...

Joy told me how I looked "Too sweet to have done all that sort of work".
At 41, I now sometime reflect on how one night when I was 30, I jumped into a fight in my pub between a rugby team and twelve off duty cops - no joke, I seriously had no fear, just got in there to sort it out.
Ah, the heady days of youth and stupidity........>LMAO

Anybody know where to get cheap supplies of vitamin E and Zinc?

Well FT, we have some things in common then.
I'm married to a philippina (from Mindanao, South Cotabato) and I also have Aspergers, wich gives me sometimes a brainoverload

FishTaco,
I know it sounds odd, but I'd try for an F-1 student visa first if you can, try to get into school here. A lot more people lining up to work than to go to school here.
I'd make an appointment with a local consular official and see them in person, explain your situation.

That is weird... I have the exact same IQ, and I can also only sleep 5 hours per night. I have always thought it was the SDT training I recieved in the Navy that caused that, but I guess it was like that even before the Navy... BTW, yesterday (July 24) marked my 20th Anniversary of joining the Navy.
I don't think I have Aspergers... Although I seem to exhibit many of the symptoms... but I have never been diagnosed with it, so I do not think that I have it... But I really don't know.
Strange.

It is not scripted. The entire system is based on a honor system. If you see a gun pointing towards you, and there is a "bang" - it is most likely you're hit. Most fighting is done within 50 meters so it's not exactly realistic engagement range, but there is a strong sense of what it was like; the sense of battle. I'm still feeling a fatigue after doing this for a weekend.

These weapons I touched recently (Mosin rifle and PPSh SMG) are of Soviet origin (made in 1944), but they had been officially disabled for firing blank ammo only. But there are other reenactors who have fully functional guns (like that Mauser Kar98). It depends on the legislation, Slovak laws are more historical-guns friendly than in Poland or Czech.

Hi Shan-I was actually stationed at Kadena AB,Okinawa.
We had an Alert Duty commitment to Osan AB,Korea.
We kept 3 F-15C's fully loaded at all times-AIM-7's,AIM-9's,and 920 rounds of 20 mike-mike for the Gatling gun,if memory serves.
The North would periodically violate the airspace over the DMZ,in order to test our response time.
I'd imagine we may have done the same to them,as well.
My father was in the U.S. Army,in the Korean War.He's 82 now,and still has the occasional nightmare.

My father was in the U.S. Army,in the Korean War.He's 82 now,and still has the occasional nightmare.
Thanks for the thanks-you are welcome.
The main reason that South Korea is a thriving republic these days is men like you and your father. I hope he can at least find some solace in that fact. My family's village was in the direct path of the Marines' landing at Inchon and subsequent thrust to Seoul. The Marines are revered because their liberation of the village marked the last battle the villagers experienced though the war dragged on for two more years. The food and medical supplies provided by the U.S. armed forces also prevented starvation during those times.
Isn't it weird that a peninsula can get so cold in the winter and so hot in the summer? Korea is a geographical oddity.
A funny anecodote: My family members who grew up during the time of the war loved the U.S. Army and Marines. But they feared the U.S.A.F. because the planes seemed to bomb everything without rhyme or reason. After observing the reactions of the ground pounders to Close Air Support, they were perplexed to see that EVERYONE feared the U.S.A.F.

PV, you were at Tong Du Chon (TDC)? What unit ? TDC to Toko-Ri through Blue Lancer Valley; Camp Casey to Camp Hovey.
When I was there (Camp Hovey - Toko-Ri) 76-78 I was with 1-38th Inf - The Rock Of The Marne at Camp Hovey for about 6 months. The rest was DMZ.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 11/08/08 03:04 AM
Shan, some of those tunnels were big. I mean big enough to drive a truck through.
Did you ever see Chinese Tunnel through the mountains up to the DMZ near Nightmare Range ? That is impressive too. What I always found amazing was all the railroad and road cuts through the mountains/hills had several huge square concrete blocks up on Y pillars. All ready for demolition to drop them in the cuts. The last 20 miles of South Korea up to the DMZ was pretty much all prepared Battle Positions. Mountains/hills all had trench lines and bunkers. The bunkers had machinegun mounts concreted in place with range cards painted on the concrete. All you had to do was drop yoiur MG in and you were ready to go. The DMZ is amazing. Miles of wire fences with another fence 1o meters behind it. Minefields galore. As new officers there, you learned to navigate your night patrols very accurately. And stay to the time schedule you were assigned.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 11/11/08 10:36 PM
OG,
I don't think so. The tunnels I saw were large enough for a small tank, but not tall enough to accomodate a deuce-and-a-half. The tours for civilians didn't allow you to see many of the fighting positions. I did see a couple of very obvious observation posts that would have lasted through the first few seconds of an opening engagement.
It gave me the creeps knowing that we didn't find all of the tunnels and some of them are probably still active to this very day.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 11/12/08 06:23 AM
20mm-thanks for the thanks,too.
Rudel-keep yer head down, mang.By the way,my cousin's son is in Afghanistan now.His name is Aaron Austin.
Shan2-are you a Korean?I'll tell you something for sure-if I had to go fight as a ground pounder, and I could choose the men that were going with me-I'd take ROK's.
The NVA and VC in the Viet Nam War tried to avoid any contact with ROK forces. There's a reason for that...
A while back,I got a book from ebay,about Daddy's unit in WWII.
It is called Black Hawks Over The Danube.
He was in the 86th Inf. Div.,341st Inf. Rgt.
A German sniper barely missed him in a town called Hagen.
The 86th got into the war very late-only had about 6 weeks of combat. They lost 106 killed,if memory serves. They were in an action called The Battle of the Ruhr Pocket.
After the Allied victory in the ETO,the 86th was sent home to prepare for combat in the Pacific.
While en route there, the Japanese surrendered to Gen. MacArthur-who incidentally,is my cousin.
My father stayed in the Army.
He was in Japan, having easy duty and a great old time, when the Korean War started.
6 days later, his fanny was in the mud.
He was so young in WWII-it was bad enough, but didn't shake him up too badly.
Korea was different.
He was convinced he'd never get out of there alive.
When MacArthur made his move at Inchon, their unit made it up to within 18 miles of the border-I think it was Manchuria, need to double-check.MacArthur's biggest mistake was believing that the Chinese would not get involved.
Daddy said that when they got the order to pull out, everyone was quite relieved.Tracers, flares, shell bursts across the night sky.
When he got back to the States,he got out of the Army-which he didn't want to do,but Korea got to him-bad.And they were going to send him back.
He was stationed in Tyler,Texas, and met my mother there. She tells me that for several years afterwards, she would be awoken in the middle of the night,to his thrashing and screaming.
Probably the best of the extremely few things he will talk about, was the time when they got some intel about Chinese forces approaching, with Russian tanks. There was a road on a hill, that the tanks were driving up.Two very brave GI's awaited them, with a bazooka. When the tanks came within range, the shooter fired up the tank in the rear,so the other 2 couldn't back up.Then he fired the lead tank, trapping the second tank in the middle. He destroyed that one, too.
Daddy said they went up to take a look, after daylight came.Tanks still smoldering, bits of flesh and human hair, the stench of violent death on everything.
He also once saw a stretch of road that had a ditch on each side. The Communist forces had executed civilians, and both ditches were filled for about 100 yards.
My father is no war-monger,but he has no use for totalitarianisms,of any kind.
He also says that anyone that would start a war is a raving lunatic.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 11/12/08 07:11 PM
I was born in the ROK, Reb.
My father was involved in the war, too. He was a North Korean businessman whose family owned a cod liver oil processing plant off of the Yellow Sea. He helped fund the resistance against the Japanese occupiers (the old man was a pretty sly #%&*$#) until the end of WW2. Then the communists came in and nationalized the plant. Dad didn't take too well to that, so they murdered his wife and kids. (His brothers saw what was coming and relocated their families to the south, but his father had left the factory to him. And he couldn't shirk that duty.) He flipped out and spent years fighting as a guerilla, alone. (Learning skills that would come in useful, later.)
Then the Korean War happened and dad decided that was it. He walked down to Pusan while avoiding both allied and communist forces. As he was an able-bodied man during a civil war, he spent most of the rest of his time with the ROK forces.
His relationship with the ROK forces continued after his retirement due to his rather unique knowledge of the communist forces. Some of my earliest memories of him was when he was lecturing a bunch of ROK Rangers during the end of the Vietnam War. In the late 60s, he met my mother and the rest of it is history.
He never said as much, but I don't think he was fighting for victory...only vengeance. The man was harder than woodpecker lips and I'm sorry to say that he got far more than his fair share of sorrows in life.
My father was always grateful for the U.S. involvement in the war and the subsequent ceasefire. It was not lost upon him that the U.S. owed Korea nothing and he was very much indebted and honored by the American sacrifices.
edit:
You know something funny? Because of the way my father acted at night (just like yours did after the war), I was absolutely convinced that ghosts were real when I was a young lad.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 11/30/08 12:14 AM
Piper, how does a guy from Somerset, UK find himself in Zanesville OH? That's easy to answer - he marries a girl from Zanesville OH
.
Of course, it is a little more complicated than that. For a start, I had to ask my wife to move back to the States (she enjoyed living in the UK). I knew that if I wanted to fly as a career we would have to move across the pond as the cost of flight training was prohibitive in the UK. I could probably get a job flying in the UK now (2000 hrs, mostly multi-engine turbine) but I really enjoy life over here and we live very close to my wife's family, so I think we will be staying a while
.
BTW, next time you pass through Zanesville let me know in advance. Maybe we can grab some lunch and I'll show you around a King Air .

Here's the aerodynamic version of yours truly that haunts the Toronto core throughout the summer:
Just in case some of you have available daughters, I enjoy long walks on moonlit beaches, romantic dinners clouded in the mist of scented candle light, jazz, and reading poetry. I also play guitar. My hobbies include various charity work such as clothing and feeding the homeless, caring for injured animals, and reading to blind children undergoing cancer treatment at Sick Kids Hospital. I also donate my hair so that these children may have luscious, full heads of hair; it's rather unfortunate that they're blind.
Of course, I'm not all work and no play. In my spare time, I enjoy visiting retirement homes and playing bridge, or simply just listening to the stories they have to share. Relaxing for me is sitting on the couch and sharing my own thoughts and feelings, hearing about a woman's day, then cooking her a fabulous meal while we watch "Top Chef", "Top Designer", "Grey's Anatomy", and reruns of "Sex and the City" (especially those). At the end of the day, I give her a foot-rub before we foreplay our way to the bedroom, where of course, I've scattered rose petals. But I don't mind if she has a headache, as I appreciate the rigors she has faced being a woman in a man's world.
By the way, I also have some real estate that I think you may be interested in

Re: Placing a face with a name - 03/03/09 02:45 AM
Hi Hank,
I went to summer camp, instead of Woodstock, but one of the guys in our troop was into shortwave radio and piped a lot of it in for us. I was the junior assistant scoutmaster that summer, and did consider going to Woodstock, but we had a huge troop, over 75 boys, and decided to hang with them to help the scoutmaster. Several buddies went, one of whom never returned. No one ever heard from him again, and it has always made me wonder both what happened to him and if I had gone would I be missing too. I'm kind of a hold over, in current appearance, but get a wild hair and cut it all short occasionally, usually in the middle of July. It's great to be able to just stick your head under a hose to cool off. That mower is too fast to drink much beer and operate unless you can stand the bouncing and quick turns. It is like a quarter horse in a barrel race, it'll turn right out from underneath you!

Re: Placing a face with a name - 03/03/09 05:06 PM
I assume you did not have the present look as an assistant scoutmaster, it might have clashed with the uniform.
My rider did kick up a lot of dirt and dust in the Summer so I usually got a mouthful of dirt with the last few gulps of beer.

No, just a long-time friend, she is very sweet but her politics are out to lunch. Case in point she is currently in Nicaragua building schools for geurillas or something.
Fun fact: I am embarrassingly drunk in this picture. It was a dinner at an academic conference. I already had two double scotches at the cash bar and when I ordered a bottle of wine for my table as kind gesture, nobody else wanted any. It was an awkward trip home when one of the experts in my field decided to hop on the same bus as me.

This was from a very small battle of the bands my band played at last summer:

What kind of music does your band play?
Weezer-esk, Greendayish music. We also play covers, of course.
If you want to hear some you can go here:
http://www.myspace.com/neccosforbreakfastBrazil Rock and
Trini Trini Singing to Me were written with some of the main guitarist's students (he is a science teacher) and they sing in those songs.
Panzer - I have very little "talent." The secret is to find people who are better than you so they can cover up your mistakes.

Wow what a fun thread. I just now found it and almost a year later at that! Its fun seeing what some of you all look like. I just read through each post and I never thought I'd see a picture of PanzerMeyer. The shots of Dave were fun too as was the Billzilla shot and Kneel Before ZOD caption. That caught me off guard and cracked me up. Thanks everybody for being good sports and producing such a light-hearted thread. Although its not without its disturbances.
I confess that the Bledfin photo frightened me greatly. I wasn't prepared for that. And someone else looks suspiciously like Fabio.

Looking good there Cheapshot!
Ya, I like the looks of that bass. It is a Dean Rhapsody with a Bubinga Top. Deans are pretty inexpensive but have pretty good quality IMO. I also have a Dean Edge 5 string, but I don't play that unless I am doing some 311 or something.
I recently bought a Fender Jaguar Bass. It plays very similar to my Dean but has more sustain and a lot more tonal options. I love it.
What brand bass is yours? Warwick?
Posted By: Cheapshot
Re: Placing a face with a name - 06/24/09 05:28 PM
I would have never guessed that to be a Dean bass...it's curvy where most of their stuff tends to be pointy. I like it.
I'm a Warwick guy. My Thumb is my go-to bass, then I have a Corvette $$ 5string that's my number 2. The $$ is tonally much more versatile, but just doesn't quite get the Thumb sound I love so much.
I also have a few Ibanez SoundGears and an Aria Pro sitting around. I'm trying to dump my extra gear right now, as it's silly to have it sitting around gathering dust. Cabs, pedals, basses...doing nothing.

EMTs essentially work at what is known as the Basic Life Support Level (i.e., no invasive emergency procedures). Paramedics have a much larger scope of practice and thus work in what is known as Advanced Life Support (ALS). The big things paramedics are trained in that EMTs aren't are things like advanced pharmacology, reading and interpreting heart rhythms, being able to start IVs and intubate patients, etc. Stuff like that.

The large German Shepherd is obviously a full breed. The second Shepherd mix is actually a German Shepherd / Terrier mix, and as you can see, he can be kinda "effeminate". All of our dogs (we have 5 between the two of us) are male w/ the exception of a couple of females.
I don't mind the comments Dirt, you've got all the right to post whatever you want. It's funny though you say I only look 20, 'cuz I really do look almost exactly as I did 12 years ago (do the math). The only reason I may sound like an old grognard is probably due to the fact that tactical simulations (and flight simulations!) have been a hobby for me for as long as I can remember, and if you were to compare my virtual military career to the real thing, I'd be serving close to 20 years! Also, I've always gravitated toward the multi-player tactical shooters, which usually promote teamwork, so I guess it's just a matter of experience. Thanks for the comments though, I'll try not to let 'em go to my head!

My wife is a medic and the emts and paramedics have either EMT or EMT-P on their shirts, the EMTs say the "P" stands for passenger!
You are absolutely right about the full-on, "technical" designation of a paramedic. It's just that, out in the field, the common practice is to refer to "entry-level" EMTs simply as EMTs and paramedics as paramedics or medics. The general public, I have found, just refers to all of us as paramedics.

Thanks gents. There were two veterans from nearby villages attending the battle reconstruction, both took part on Eastern front campaign against Soviets and then fought in the Uprising against Germans. They liked the show very much, but at the same time they reminded us how terrible the war really was. I was glad they did not considered us for total fools

Jurinko,
Tell me about your uniforms and accoutrement. Where do you get it? How period correct does your average Czech Army re-enactor get?
I know as a ACW re-enactor we had quite a few button counters.

Jurinko,
Tell me about your uniforms and accoutrement. Where do you get it? How period correct does your average Czech Army re-enactor get?
I know as a ACW re-enactor we had quite a few button counters.
Slovak WWII Army had uniforms and equipment identical to Czechoslovak pre-war standard, except transition from shoulder to collar patches and new state symbol on belt and cap.
For Slovak WWII reenactment, we use either Czechoslovak army uniforms from 50ties, or recently good replicas are being made in Czech republic. Old Czechoslovak 50´s uniforms are very similar to the pre-war ones, but their color is more dull grey-green + some minor differences.. and yes, they have 5 buttons instead of correct 6
My bread bag is reworked afterwar Czechoslovak army stuff, ammo pouches are leather replicas made in Czech, bag is repaired original from 1938, bayonet is original, field shovel maybe from Austria-Hungary empire, shoes are Soviet ones from 60ties, leg wraps are replicas, helmet metal is original but repainted with replica leather string. Czechoslovak rifle model 24 is from 1938, able to fire blanks only (no special permission needed for it yet). The coolest thing is my belt, in which my grandfather returned from the Uprising in late October 1944, going through the hills to avoid Germans.
Stuff can be bought mostly on internet auctions or traded between members of military history clubs.
Inevitably, "button counters" have appeared sooner or later and quality of equipment is a subject of competition between local military history clubs. But the main point should be sharing our interest in history, fun and good show for audience, which can learn in this way about forgotten local history.

No doubt.
As compared to ACW, as you might suspect we rely more on replicas. Not surprising, as the availability of originals are practically non-existent in this day and age. Though traditional methods and materials are used in the manufacture thereof.. The closest we ever got to original was where the leader of our battery group had an original spoked wheel for a gun used in the Spanish-American War. circa 1898.
But the main point should be sharing our interest in history, fun and good show for audience, which can learn in this way about forgotten local history.
This was always my philosophy as well. I don't think you have to be 100% decked to the nines to be convincing. For example, there were those who would complain of the use of CSA buttons in the manufacture of uniforms as opposed to some you might find on a local militia homespun. That wasn't something that ever bothered me that much.

Yeah, I am. Short while back a couple people wanted to see what my g/f looked like - but I am afraid of having it nicked and ending up somewhere else. Plus, I'd probably have to post the photo behind her back 'cause she's sort of shy and then if it did get around to somewhere else and she found it she would likely just kill me. So in reality, I'm more afraid of what she would do than what others would do I guess

Chi-wa-wa's are awesome dogs, never liked them until we took in two stray ones. One is the fat pudgy mother we call Fatty and the pup Chi-Chi (wife named that one). And just recently another homeless joined us and we call him Fat Boy Slim (Slim for short). Thats due to him weighing about 3-4lbs when he showed up literally skin and bones. So we have a black Wippet named Divinity and the three above dogs. None of which anke bite or bark more than any Choc. Lab and all are friendly and good with kids.

Nice share guys
It's been a hell of a spring
Our team made it to the finals for the second year in a row, unfortunately we once again came home empty handed. Here's a pic from our local newpaper, I'm rushing the puck, with the gray playoff beard
I wore my brother's jersey under mine for some magic and as a tribute to my brother who passed away just two weeks earlier, but to no avail, grief had sapped me. Well that and old age lol

My son Tristan`s first flight ever, he loved it. Now to get him up in a fixed wing plane.
He is not so sure about that yet. LOL.

Aircraft want to fly, not so with helicopters. The purpose of a helicopter is to see how many poles you can chop down before you blow up.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 10/11/10 06:56 PM
My 3rd time up in a helicopter. Its actually quite fun being able to go where they can go.
No runways needed and you can stop and hover. No plane can do that. But like anything related
to Aviation, I enjoy it all.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 10/11/10 08:13 PM
Flying in a helicopter was just pure fun. I was in a JetRanger and I can only describe it as controlled chaos. You know there's a hell of a lot of stuff going on above you and even around you, but it's all sort of in control. I had went twice and the pilot knew then that he had a good passenger looking for some fun so his take-off and landing was dramatic to say the least. Could not keep from smiling like complete idiot when he was doing that.
Posted By: oldgrognard
Re: Placing a face with a name - 10/11/10 08:38 PM
I had too many "dramatic" takeoffs and landings in helicopters. And that says nothing about parachuting from them, Fast-roping, rapelling, Helocasting, blacked-out NOE at night with NVGs, etc.

Now that explains a lot, I would not think they are much fun to if I had those experiences.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 10/11/10 09:54 PM
Oh no, don't get me wrong. I had a lot of fun in helos and would get in one in a heartbeat. It's just that I am realistic about it. After you make a lot of helo movements, they are just another truck to you. But lots of impressive scenery. And memory invoking instances. Seeing tracers coming at you and hearing that muffled bang as they hit the skin of the thing. watching gunships hosing down a hot LZ. Watching the escort gunships letting loose a volley of rockets along side you. Being in a Huey that hit a telephone line and feeling the deceleration and slight nose down angle until the line broke (fortunately the skids deflected it up near the body so it was nearer the CG and it was third world stuff that wasn't as tough as stateside wire). Watching with joy as your evac bird approached the PZ and you knew you were headed for a shower, clean clothes and decent food. As a unit commander watching the PZ as a dozen helos came in and watching your soldiers doing a semi-orderly rush to them. Or the next time when they landed in the reverse direction as the briefing and watching as your carefully made loading plans go to hell as soldiers are now confused as to which helo they are supposed to get in; watching as two chalks rush to one chopper and then shaking your head as some from each chalk got in and the remainders of both chalks now start running around trying to find one to get in. Seeing a dozen of them flying in eschelon and looking over to see one of your Platoon leaders give you a thumbs -up all the while outlined by a beautiful rising sun. Tracking the flight on your map and then hearing the blade whupps change as the flight lead is preparing for landing and you look at the map and know it isn't the right place; tapping the co-pilot and pointing at your map shaking your head "NO" and all he does is shrug his shoulders. The birds touch down and your troops pile out and you sit there glaring at the flight- lead pilot knowing you either get out with your troops in the wrong place or fly away with the birds leaving them on the ground. No choice; and then gathering up the leaders and doing a FRAGO since everything has now changed. Looking at how far you have to push to get to the right place and knowing that time is against you and you will arrive with a unit too tired to do much useful when you get there. Flying down a river in Central America at night blacked out, NVGs, and your gear secured in and to a rucksack lined with a tough plastic bag so it will float when you hit the water. Thinking the whole time I hope the pilot gets the speed and height right so I don't hit the water too hard; jeez I hope there isn't a floating log in there waiting for me. Then on light just hop off and down into the river. And that is just some of it for starters. By the way I wear the Air Assault badge.

Me and some members of our Club of military history dared to simulate elite airborne troops, performing an individual parachute jump. We represented various armies of early cold war era, namely Belgian 1ste Bataljon Parachutisten, Israeli airborne troops from Yom Kippur period and Czechoslovak airborne troops.
Aeroplane: Antonov An-2 biplane trainer, jump altitude: 1200-1400m
----------------------------------------------------
6 hours of theoretical and semi-practical training
On the airfield: you will land here and nowhere else
Waiting for the weather window
On the double! (my wife on the far right
)
Soon-to-be paratroopers
Venerable Antonov-2 taking off, flying since 1947
Soon-to-be paratroopers II, a bit nervous
Me airborne, proper landing drill performed
Fresh paras + glider infantryman from 82nd abn
Now proudly wearing maroon berets
All armies friends here
We had a tremendous fun and our families are now tired from our non-stop bragging
In the meantime I am going through individual tasks from Pre-parachute selection training for British Para Regiment, which is also fun but not shared by all (just did 1.5 mile in 9:05)

http://www.sanicole.com/ Sadly I'll miss it this year as I have to go to Scotland and this year my step son invited me to work at it too

The man who most of Hyperlobby chases is actually a pretty mild mannered engineering nerd:

Don´t take it badly WhistlinggDeath, but... uhm, Is that a toupée? Admittedly you look way too young to need one but still I kind of feel like it is.
Nothing bad about it, just... No offence intended.

LOL, no, my family just has the bushy hair genes. It's actually the reverse; I've been told since age 13 that I need to get a haircut. Once I do, people still say that. The only time this has not happened is when I served with the Marines after university and had about 1/4 inch of hair all around for 2 1/2 years. In my case almost bald was neater and cooler than hair but took a trip to the base barbershop every single stinking week.

Nope, not so skilled to play online :P
Hyperlobby, anyway? Barely heard of it.
In the land of farmers that Italy is, internet is a recent discovery. Imagine about FAST internet...
But if you tell me what flying games you have I'LOVE to give it a try!
Never been afraid of losing and as Tom suggested me I have to take something back.
En garde!
@TOM and evryone else in this thread: I officially apologize, but I've NEVER EVER EVER seen hair so bushy on a man before. It's an italian thing I suppose...
Still, Tom, your comment confirm me you thought the same.

Hi,
just found this topic, decided to post and tried to dig up some recent pics.
(Sorry, nothing about real flying. I am planning to do that in a later period of my life..:) )
So, apart from work and simulations I do this (was taken 3 weeks ago):
Sharing the knowledge with my daughter (approx 1 year ago):
And finally something SIMHQ related, when I worked in Malaysia, I had the chance to try out Karting at Sepang (not on the F1 circuit, but next to it..:)
Pic is 4 years old:
Do not ask about the results, I was at least 25KG heavier than any of my asian collegues, even fitting me into one of their race karts took some serious effort...

His forearms are larger than your legs. I would not wrestle him for the pilot seat.
There are times in life when leading from behind (co-pilot seat) is safer and more efficient.

Okay, now just wait a moment.
I've got it all figured out, this baldness gig.
I have the answer!
Ready? (This is top secret/classified beyond descrption!)
There is no such thing as baldness!
What happens is that the hair stops growing out, and instead grows in!
Get it?
I discussed this with my wife and she agrees.
I have stopped shaving, and trimming my hair.
Because...........
Your hair never really falls out.
It just grows in a different direction
INAnd, for a extra feature, the more hair I grow, the smarter I get!
I will soon be running for President. Of the WORLD.
Any resemblence between me and a gorilla is pure coincidence.

Cool picture Sim.
The AK I fired years ago had a brass pin in the front stock that I almost always ended up putting my index finger over. I always remembered about that neat little feature after it had burned the caca out of my index finger.
It was a a fun gun to rip through a couple of 30 round magazines though.

I just saw this..
This is the bass I play the most.. it is a Korean made JV24. I got it used from
TalkBass. It has Seymour Duncan pups and it came with a
John East U Retro preamp in it. I just put a set of DR BBs on it. Talk Bass is a pretty good site for anything bass.. Most of my gear including that cabinet and the head I got used from there for a lot less than it would have cost me new.
This is my first real bass.. the 77 Jazz. I don't play it much because I prefer the 5 string but I can't bring myself to part with it just yet. The pick guard is not stock but everything else is. That sticker you see on there between the pups was put there by my now 32 year old daughter when she was 5.

I have similar hairline as you, if left to grow, looks terrible growing around sides and little on top.
So I keep it cut to military recruit height. Actually like it this way, low maintenance, saving on shampoo
and who needs a comb.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 03/10/13 12:11 PM
Usually I keep mine cut with clippers and the guard off. The day the picture was taken, it was unplanned. I have so few pictures taken that I figured I would put it up anyway because it is usually years between the pictures.
I also have this huge bald spot you can't see in the picture. It's on the crown of my head but about 3-4 inches across.

This is my niece and I. Three days after Christmas and 5 days after I buried my Grandmother, I took her to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.
This was today, some of the guys in my unit wanted to roll, but being that it was Saturday, only myself and the instructor showed up. So we did strikes for about an hour and then we grappled with slaps for about an hour.

I wish I could go to Chicago more often, but look forward to her visiting my parents in 2 weeks. They'll bring her down to Ft. Carson for the day.

Wheels/Panzer: They are some big cats; even bigger once they stand up (Bengals in this case)! They are around the 200kg/440 pound mark; and roughly 9 foot tall once they go up on their hind legs (Photo below):
The Siberian Tigers are much bigger; they'd be around the 14 foot mark on their legs at full extension....

A few pics from over the years...
Me looking rather young on my first ever trip at sea in 2004:
Another shot from my first time away:
Fast forward to 2007, my first time at sea as a qualified marine engineer officer in charge of the watch (Falklands and South Atlantic):
Then on to something a little more modern in 2008, this was in the Persian Gulf on the Orion 08 deployment, the first time a Wave Class had deployed east of Suez:
Then back to an old museum piece again. In the last ten years I've sailed on three ships of this class. This particular one I've spent 14 months of my life on. They're best described as "character building":
This last one is from 2010. This pic was taken the morning we arrived back in the UK after the Auriga '10 deployment to the US. These were the engineer officers who took Largs Bay on her last deployment flying British colours before she was sold to the Royal Australian Navy (the guy on the left is in his civvies because he's just about to walk down the gangway and go home on leave, lucky bugger!):

Re: Placing a face with a name - 05/07/14 09:03 PM
Cheers guys, here's a few more from the vaults:
Some more messing about on Orangeleaf in 2008:
This is my reaction when I find somebody has taken all the 24mm combination spanners and not put them back in the right place when they've finished:
"My" engines - a couple of Crossley Pielstick PC2 engines. These are only 7,500HP each, not the biggest. My last ship I was looking after a 23,500HP engine about the size of a large house. That was some pretty big stuff, impressive climbing around inside it.
Down in between the engines. Not a place you want to take your ear defenders off. It's pretty noisy.
Pretty self explanatory. Only 3,300 wigglies. Back in 2010 I got to see water cooling out of a 6,600V propulsion converter cabinet. A £300m ship and they used cheap plastic fittings for the water cooling on the propulsion converters.
This pic was taken as we arrived in Norfolk Naval Base - I thought it might be cool to get me in a pic with USS George H.W. Bush and USS Enterprise, one carrier just starting out its career and the other just ending it. I think the LHD on the far left is USS Kearsarge.
And finally back to Orangeleaf for the 2012 refit..... This was in the Cammel Laird shipyard in Birkenhead. Apparently this drydock is haunted because it was cut out of the graveyard of the old Birkenhead Priory, lots of disturbed medieval graves and all that jazz:

Re: Placing a face with a name - 05/08/14 06:23 PM
Never watched BSG... A couple of years ago after I shaved my head somebody pointed out "Hahaha Nick you look like...."
At which point I said that may be true, but they should remember one of my jobs is the weapons maintenance officer and as such I have the keys to the lockers where we store 2 miniguns, 6 machine guns, 12 rifles and 12 handguns... and all the necessary bits to get the 20mm cannons operational

It's easy really... smuggle a little bit in every day and build it!
Anyway, is it not technically a marine plane?

When I was in the US Army I got stuck working in PLL (Parts and stuff) to try and help them out.
Bottom line. After about a month there I figured out they still had EVERY part for M-14A1's available for order.
I passed....rumor control says many other's didn't.

Re: Placing a face with a name - 05/10/14 03:57 AM
I drove this this glorious M577. It was in a Fire Direction Center for the Army's first M109A6 'Paladin' Self Propelled Howitzer unit. Precisely zero glamor factor, but any military service has some interesting elements. Cameras were not really allowed for those bits in my case since the equipment we had was new at the time, and digital was a dream of sci-fi. This camera came for free with a carton of Winstons and took the only pictures I have from that time. 1993.
Here's one from a couple weeks ago.

Cheers mate. It certainly does take a "special" kind of person to work in an engine room
And yup, we most definitely are the most important department on every ship, it's just nobody else realises it... until the lights go out

Mr Tim.
When your in your C-130, do you still do the Band Of Brothers "STAND UP! Check Equipment!" etc etc etc?
I can answer that for you....for british paratroopers it's still exactly the same today.....
'Stand up, fit Equipment'
[PJI instruction to fit bergen/container to hooks and attach reserve chute]
'Prepare for equipment check'
[PJI checks container/weapon, routing of rope, main chute, reserve chute and helmet]
'Tell off for equipment check'
[Troopers call their stick number out with 'OK' and pat the person's shoulder in front - yanks used to smack the blokes arse in front, probably still do!]
5 ok
4 ok
3 ok
2 ok
1 ok - Port/Starboard stick ok
[Number 1 in the door tells PJI he is OK, calls the port or starboard stick as OK and gives a thumbs up]
[Loadmaster gives 5/10 minute warning and further warning for final run]
PJI's open para door, prepare step and confirm wind deflectors have deployed
PJI's call troopers to door when 2-3 minutes out.....
Red on {all troopers shout red-on to give warning to entire stick]
Green on [PJI's shout and clear strops on each jump]
....Go..2, 3, 4, 5.......
[PJI's shout half-second timing to ensure no colliding in slip-stream at rear of airframe from both para-doors]
Troopers breathe sigh of relief when out of sweaty aircraft having being stood up from anything from 10-40 minutes with 150lb of kit dangling off their tits. Look up, check canopy, steer into clear air-space and carry out drills before screaming into the floor about 25knotts and not being able to carry out para roll that they spent weeks perfecting!!
