Is My GPU Dead?

Is My GPU Dead? - 10/11/20 04:06 PM

My PC has crashed twice while flying DCS. Each time required a full reboot. Yesterday I couldn't get it to start at all so I disconnected everything but the mouse/keyboard and connected the monitor to the onboard graphics port and it fired up. Long story short when I try to start the PC with my Radeon R9 390X connected it starts to boot and after a few seconds the fans on the GPU turn off and it goes no farther.

Is my GPU dead? Are there other tests I can do to make sure?

Thanks.

Oh and if I start it with onboard graphics but with the Radeon R9 390X installed Device Manager doesn't see the Radeon R9 390X at all.

Hi F4, Have you updated the BIOS Lately or changed any settings in there? if not probally not the issue but in BIOS you can select either to bootup with IGPU or a Reglar GPU Maybe that could be an issue? Do you turn your monitor on first before starting the PC? I have an issue where it delays the bootup sequence if I dont turn on the monitor first completely..

Having it not being recognised in device manager may be something or it just does not recognise it because of a BIOS Setting.. Do you have another PC to test your Graphics card in to see if it does the same thing?

It could also be a PSU issue, do you have a PSU Checker tool?

Thanks Nephilim, I've looked around in bios and not seen anything like that but I will dig some more. Wasn't aware of PSU checkers, I'll look into that as well.

OK In your manual on on page 3-28 is where they show the Graphics Config setup page.. It is probally on Auto maybe try setting to the manual mode PCIe should do it.. I am doubting this is it but you never now..

Thanks, tried to force it to boot using the card but no joy. Going to check my PSU next but looks like I will be buying a new GPU, Amazon Prime Day starts tomorrow so maybe I'll find a bargain!

Does the fan on the GPU turn on? I think you said the fans come on and the shuts the PC down.. IF so yes it might be the card, do you have another PC to test it in?

Don't have another PC that will accept that card. PSU voltages look good.

Fans come on and shut down after 30 seconds or so.

There is a group of 4 LED's along the edge of the MB beside the RAM. They light up when booting, red/yellow/white/orange to indicate activity of different components. The white one is labeled "VGA_LED" and when I boot with the onboard video it lights up and then goes out, with the card installed once this LED lights up it stays lit*. See page 1-24 in manual: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/MAXIMUS_VIII_HERO/E10343_MAXIMUS_VIII_HERO_UM_WEB.pdf

I'm pretty satisfied that the GPU is the issue at this point. Thanks for all your help!

EDIT: * sometimes it stays lit. I tried one more thing, I switched the power cables going to the card from the PSU to different ports on the PSU. No difference, but I noticed that the white led doesn't stay on every time, just some times.

Well one last thing have you tried reseating the card in it's slot? Also if you have anotyher PCIe slot on the board try seating it in that one most boards have 2.. I think your did too.

Removed and reseated the card several times but I didn't try a different slot. New card on it's way. If it happens to be a dead slot Amazon has a very liberal return policy wink

Hey I was wondering if you had received the new card and if it all works good now?

Actually received Thursday, 2 days sooner than expected. Good job Amazon!

Nice improvement over 390X, runs super quite and cool. Still playing around with settings to figure out what is optimum in DCS and IL2.

Thanks again for your help!
