GTX 980 out - 09/19/14 04:26 PM

And I just bought a 780ti not more than 2 weeks ago..

Wondering if I should try exchange it? Will probably lose 15% on that.

Check benchmarks for the games you typically play. From the reviews I've seen there's not that great a performance difference between the 780Ti and 980.

Having said that there's a huge difference in power consumption in favour of the 980. How much difference that might make to your '15%' I've no idea. Depending on how the maths works out, swapping could even save you money.

Yes and there is the problem. I am looking for a used 780ti but sellers are not going to offer them below the price of a new 980. I did a Craig's search and lowest price for used 780ti was $660.

So I went ahead and exchanged the 780Ti for the 980 in the Gigabyte G1 build. Its definitely the faster 980 version out there and I'm seeing a 20% improvement in my benchmark scores (Firestrike went from 10.5 to almost 13K).

Will likely pick up another card when prices decrease for a SLI setup.

No regrets. smile

Congrats 20% improvement from one gen to the next is pretty great, not to mention the reduced cost and power consumption of the 980 thumbsup

Might finally have a reason to upgrade from my 670 this next year.

Definitely. Another SUPER interesting thing you can do if you're willing to forsake the single GPU, is SLI 2x 970s for a similar price.

It will blow the doors off anything in the next 2 years.

I'll keep my 780 with 6gb. Since VRam doesn't stack in SLI, i would bet that they will be better than 2 980's (they will be limited to 4gb. and that, i suspect, will be the new bottleneck)

I wouldn't bet on that since the 6GB 780 gets outperformed by the 780Ti (unless I misread something here). Which in turn gets outperformed by the new 980s.
