Gustavs versus Boeings (IL-2 '46 + DBW) - 03/13/23 10:38 PM

Not so much a mission report, as a sequence of screenies from my first mission in this evergreen sim for what seems like years. Campaign is FlatSpinMan's Defence of the Reich 1943 which can be found on M4T here: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3856

This interception mission was an air start, with me at the head of just four 109Gs. Strictly speaking my pilot has recently been posted to JG1 covering the Baltic coastal area, but not having changed my kite's skin, I'm flying Yellow 7 from 9.JG3 'Udet'.

We have started quite close to an incoming raid of four-motor bombers and before I get the hang of things, my schwarm breaks up and turns into the onrushing enemies. I do likewise...

...but can't get into position in time for a head on pass. Instead, I'm forced to come around and close in from astern. In some trepidation, I manage to keep my head and get hits on an outlying Boeing.

[Linked Image]

Despite being hit myself by return fire, I press home my attack to point blank range before breaking down and away, narrowly avoiding my target, which comes apart in the air above me.

[Linked Image]

I'm hit again as I go down, but have the satisfaction of seeing the big vier motor is in a lot more trouble, to put it mildly.

[Linked Image]

I open out the range before trying to level off, the sky above white with enemy contrails.

[Linked Image]

I bank around to get a last view of my victim. No doubt about that one. I don't see any 'chutes, poor devils.

[Linked Image]

My engine has been hit and is losing power, and I can feel that my controls are also damaged. Nothing for it but to go home, having ordered the herren to attack - just in case.

[Linked Image]

Meanwhile, other units are going into action, some in 109s like ours...

[Linked Image]

...others in 190s.

[Linked Image]

The enemy rumbles on, seemingly unimpressed.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

My attention remains firmly focussed on my own troubles, which are plain to see.

[Linked Image]

I bimble about for a while, looking for somewhere to get down before something stops working, or worse.

[Linked Image]

In the end, somewhat disoriented by the air start, I decide to call it quits at that point. An air finish, if you like. Seems fair enough. Especially as I don't much fancy killing my pilot through sheer loss of familiarity - been a long time since I played a WW2 air combat sim. I'm quite pleased - well, relieved, really - to find that I've got eighteen kills from seventeen missions.

[Linked Image]

I was also pleased and relieved to find that I still thoroughly liked and enjoyed playing this classic sim.
