Recommended Silent Hunter game?

Recommended Silent Hunter game? - 06/29/15 12:05 PM

My first game was SH3 and I had a lot of fun with it so many years ago. I could not imagine how the patrol boats could still find me but even then, it was a very fun learning experience. This was also after I read The Hunt for Red October and other Tom Clancy books so it was so cool being able to play around in subs. Plus the external views were awesome!

Fast forward to today.... what is the best Silent Hunter game to play? I know there are a lot of mods out now and IIRC, last time I played, SH4+mods was better than SH5. Is that still the case now?

While I am looking for a good play experience, I don't think I want to do manual targeting calculations just yet.... but I want that option later on. I think the last time I played, what I could do was take bearings to the target, work out it's path, and zoom to a potential ambush point. I could take out one or two ships, then have to run.

I would say SH4 is better overall, but then I have always been partial to games about the US submarine service. If you really want a U-boat game, I think SH5 has been modded enough at this point to make it useful.

Isn't SH4 just about German U-boats in the Pacific? I think I skipped SH4.

I am not sure if you are being intentionally sarcastic, but in case you are not, no. There is a German U-boat expansion for SH4 covering the German operations in the Indian Ocean, but SH4 covers the US fleet boats fighting against Japan.

No, not being sarcastic. biggrin

I remember SH4 being out but did not look very much into it. I think I got that idea more from what I've read and didn't really bother to check up on the game very much.

So... you can command US submarines in SH4? I know there is SH4 and there is the SH4 Wolves of the Pacific expansion, but I just thought they were all about German submarines.

Yes. SH4 is about the US submarine war in the pacific, and as Nimits said, an expansion adds German U-Boat operations in the Indian Ocean.

Oh, I had just answered the same question here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4384347#Post4384347

I do not wish to cross-reference, so maybe these 2+ threads could be merged?

I find SH3 with the various Supermods (GWX 3.0 Gold, NYGM, WAC4.1, LSH2015) are still very enjoyable and immersive.

SH3 may be old (2005) but is not dead by any means. I find it has so many mods/upgrades, etc., you can find much to keep you busy sinking ships.

Close 2nd would be SH4 and the Operation Monsun mod for Atlantic U-boot operations, although it has nowhere near the available mods for it.

I will try downloading the mods soon. Many thamks to Blitzkrieg for pointing out a copy that would play on my computer.
