Is there a modern version of 'great naval battles'? - 03/27/08 03:01 PM

Years and years ago I played a sim called 'great naval battles'.

Is there an equivalent today? (No, silent hunter is not equivalent ;\) ).

try dosbox...I've had great success with it on xp sp2. google for it, once you have gone through it the first time, it's pretty easy to use, I even got F14 fleet defender to run.

the great naval battle series are abandonware now, there are two or three of the versions freeware on happy puppy, try a google for that too. I think they have a download limit, daily or per download but hey, they are free.

lots of old dos stuff.

The Great Naval Battles are great games, I own the complete collection called The Final Fury, original.

It contains 1+2+3+4+5, truly awesome naval series, shame that it died, one of SSIs best series IMO.

Also, I would not completely recommend the abandonware versions, all the ones I've encountered are unpatched, and the patches fixes alot of bugs, but they add copyprotection requiring the original CDs etc, and I haven't been able to find cracks.

That's why I bought Final Fury off amazon last year.

I had a couple in that series (3+4 I think) but they were somewhat buggy and hard to get to run stable back in the day. I really liked the game style though. I've read the very first one is the best but never did play that one. Where can I download it from? I already have Dosbox just need GNB1.

the entire series is here...

as mentioned, sometimes they can be patched, sometimes not.

hxxp://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4357 direct link for gnb5, for the rest, hit simulations and then browse.

depending upon how you intend to run it, one utility to have around may be mousedriver, try a google for it.

still great games.

If you like predreadnoughs and WWI... try 'Distant Guns' - is the top notch.
