SurvIsland - 07/22/18 08:32 AM

SurvIsland Is not quite a "tactical" game, just dident know were to put this cool sim...

From what I gather from playing and thus so far, Survisland is a bare bone no zombi or living dead hardcore survival game. Game does not take you by the hand, your goal is to survive :smile2

The game is in EA at a dirt cheap price of €5,69, and looks real nice. Works quite well from my experience...

Steam:
SurvIsland

You just might need some help, otherwise...

Is this 3rd person only?

I have tried quite a few of these 'survival' games, Stranded Deep,The Forest,Ark Survival but after a while I lose interest. I still think it's an interesting genre,I just haven't found one yet that I felt I could stick with.

Yes it´s 3rd person for now (EA). Don´t know if they will add 1st person later on.

Have you tried Subnautica? If not, do. I'm not one for survival games, but this one has me hook, line and sinker. One of the best games I've ever played.

Yup,got it but not touched it for ages. In fact the last time I played it you couldn't get on the Aurora.

Re: SurvIsland - 07/24/18 10:03 PM

That must have been a long time ago. I just picked it up this past Steam sale. Apparently it came out of early access and was officially released earlier this year.

Re: SurvIsland - 07/25/18 05:42 PM

Same as @chucky. Bought it shortly after it came out on EA but havent touched it since. I dident like having to "eat" all the time so I dropped it. Now you can choose not to do so, and a bunch of other things they added aswell from what I have red. I might have to install it again.

Iam also playing "Wayward" (pixel art) which looks silly but it´s actually a very hardcore survival game.

If you like wayward trying playing dwarf fortress. There is a survival mode that is pretty epic.

Re: SurvIsland - 07/25/18 10:49 PM

Thanks @Master. DF seems a bit overkill, but yeah looking into something similar. Maybe Rimworld, don´t know yet still watching videos.

Re: SurvIsland - 07/26/18 12:22 AM

Does rimworld have a survival mode? Its basically a colony sim (like DF) where you issue orders but dont directly control your people. DF is like that as well but there is a mode where you can play one person and you move around the whole generated world surviving and interacting with npcs. It is by far the best survival game i've played. It is very much like wayward but x1000 in depth. I think it is called adventure mode. Ill boot up Rimworld and see if they added something like that.

edit: Nope, no adventure mode in rimworld. There is an option to start with 1 guy but you dont control them. You still issue orders and the guy will do what he wants and maybe do what you tell him sometimes.

Yeah, that's exactly why I don't do early access. Way to early to be making calls on if a game is going to be good or not since everything usually drastically changes during EA. I can't tell you if hunger is better than what was in the very early EA versions since I didn't experience that, but all I can say is that you do still have to eat and drink in survival mode. I have an extremely low tolerance of grindiness, and I haven't found the eating mechanic in the final release to be a chore. The hunger goes up reasonably slow, so you can do some good length excursions without having to eat. The thirst goes up faster, though. Making water got close to pegging my "this is a pain in the ass" meter, but once I built a water filtration unit (automatically filters sea water, purifies, bottles and stores it) that went away.

Re: SurvIsland - 07/26/18 10:29 AM

Thanks for your help and guidelines so far!

@Master..
No I don´t think Rimworld has a solo/survival mode but you found out by yourself anyway. But as you all ready know you do have to get the colony to survive, which I might enjoy too. Iam still on the fence with this one. Gets the same love as DF from fans so that´s why I have both on my radar.

As for DF, each time I watch a video Iam like "wow", pretty indepth to be honest. Not that I don´t like that, which I do prefer over simplicity, but from what I have seen so far, there is alot of text reading (options/menus etc.) which my tired eyes don´t get along with to good. Will see, I´ll have to watch more videos.

Another one I do enjoy is "Project Zomboid which I recently picked up from Steam´s summer sale. Great stuff as long as you like rogue style game mode, and the fact that you are never going to win!

Or I just play DayZ in both it´s forms (Arma3+Exile or DayZ Standalone). Both are great fun if you don´t mind some KOS.

Just looking for a different style of game, something to relax to and get away from the shooting. Bought Ylands twice and refunded it twice. Been looking at Stonehearth, but seems Riot has pulled the plug right before official release. Then there´s Subsistence which gets good reviews but the log cabins look like pre-made cabins you would buy from a caravan dealer.

Anyhow, Iam in recon mode...

@Rambler...
On inicial EA you had to fish quite alot, then cook them and eat them. It was quite often, and as you Iam not always in the mood to grind. But after reading your comments I just might install Subnautica again. After all its very refreshing to be swiming underwater with the summer heat right now.

Again, thanks all!

With regards to DF...

I´ll be watching this and see if that helps on deciding. Might help others too...

In a similar vain, we have Cataclysim: Dark Days Ahead...

Re: SurvIsland - 07/26/18 12:28 PM

So far I have found two that might fit the bill...

- KeeperRL. A lighter DF with some Dungen Keeper in it.

Steam:
KeeperRL

--

- Keplerth. This seems to have a bit of everything.

Steam:
Keplerth

Re: SurvIsland - 07/26/18 08:31 PM

KeeperRL is very good. Its like dwarf fortress meets dungeon keeper. DF is still so much better but KeeperRL is like DF lite. The settings in KeeperRL are very basic. For instance you cant adjust volume... It does have an adventure mode. It is turn based like wayward.

I refunded Keplerth. When I played it there wasnt anything to do. Took about an hour to see the whole game and be done. But it was a very good base for a game. Given enough time, if they continue developing it, it will be fun!

Re: SurvIsland - 07/27/18 06:58 PM

Hey Master, thanks!

After seeing more videos of KeeperRL, I decided not to get it for now. I see it´s focused alot on combat, all the crafting you do is basically for your army (minioms), rooms, training etc. Might look into it later on...

I did buy "Keplerth" because I like the Idea behind it and how it works so far. Let´s hope it keeps in the direction it´s going on.

So instead of KeeperRL, I decided on "Embark", seems my taste and just hope aswell that they keep up with it...
ITCH: Embark

If you just want one of those group survival games I highly recommend rimworld. I've not played embark but that video looks cool. only 24 bucks. I might pick it up down the road.

But in all seriousness... learn dwarf fortress. It stomps all these other pretenders to dust. I just wish it looked better but you can install graphic packs.

Thanks Master, will do with regards to DF. I just wished (and alot of other people too) they updated the UI and made it all 3D. I know there´s mods to it but still not to practical.

With regards to Rimworld, it´s another game that people rave about but also because of all the mods. Embark seems to fill both gaps a bit so I´ll stick with this for awhile. Dosent mean I wont try Rimworld in the future or buy it on sale.

Here´s a dev blog and as you will see, mil like structures and squads added.

There´s a option to render grass which looks real cool.

Preview the grass on this one...

Re: SurvIsland - 09/01/18 06:27 PM

New update...

Alpha 0.5.2.0 Update Log
1 SEPTIEMBRE - SUPER TRAMPERS
Major Update:
1. Transformation System:
Now items have the ability to detect surrounding environments and transform accordingly.
There are several aspects that can affect an item:
a) Sunlight Intensity: mainly to make dried items
b) Temperature: low temperature keeps item fresh, high temperature causes faster decay, but higher temperature will cook or scorch items
c) Wetness: higher wetness can cause faster decay, and low wetness is required to dry items.
d) Wind Strength: mainly to make dried items, also helps to reduce wetness

Apart from the environment, these aspects can also be affected by other items, like a lit campfire.

Currently available Items with Transformations and their transform types:
Can be roasted/ burnt in fire, and decay over time:
a) Green Coconut
b) Coconut
c) Drilled Coconut
d) Empty Coconut
e) Coconut Meat
f) Coconut Shell
g) Bananas
h) Mangrove Fruit
i) Fan Shell

Now the progress of decadence is shown by the color of the item’s durability circle, from green (fresh) to red (rotten), and the cooking progress can be seen by the texture and the name of the item.

2. In-Game Tutorials
Over 45+ step by step tutorial tasks and 13 detailed information pages for new players to learn about game mechanics.
You can disable or enable the tutorial in Options menu and continue the unfinished tasks.
If the tutorial is enabled and start a new game, you’ll see its tasks on top of the screen, and the detailed info page in the left.

Added:
1. Added 18 fruit variations to support roasting and rotting functions
2. Added Keys Tip when placing items
3. Added the ability to move items vertically when placing with Scroll Wheel
4. Added the ability to switch placing types or shapes with Key R when placing items to ground
5. Added sticks bundle to deploy wood stand on ground which can be used as barricades or roasting racks
6. Added a warning message when trying to upgrade a building part with the character standing in its range

Changes:
1. Removed the option of unlimited frame rate
2. Redesigned the saving system to allow future updates support previous save files. This can make your game saves persistent in almost any future updates.
