Coming back to WOTR - 05/24/20 03:04 PM

Hi everyone,

I've been away from WOTR, and flight simming in general, for a while now. I get into a routine of playing, then work gets in the way, my interests change and I end up doing something else.

Anyway, I've come back to WOTR to find several updates and changes. Just thought I'd post this to say that I'm really impressed with the progress of Pol and Mark have made with the sim and I'm really enjoying flying the Spitfire out on patrols. My combat flying still leaves a lot to be desired.
I started playing IL2 box when I cam back to flight simming, but there was something missing. I loaded up WOTR and there it was, the immersion. IL2 is a very nice looking sim and has some great features, but it seriously lacks the immersion of WOTR. WOTR was the first sim that I truly felt part of a squadron and part of a real world where things change on a daily basis. It all feels very real and I'm fairly certain it is the closest you'll get to flying in the Battle of Britain. Patrols and scrambles where you see nothing of the enemy at the intercept point but then encounter a random force of bombers returning from another mission, or stumble across a damaged fighter trying to make it to home base. WOTR is simply the best for putting across the Battle of Britain experience. I often find IL2's campaigns feel more like doing a routine, than flying during an actual conflict.

WOTR was also the first sim (after 10-15 years of flight sim flying) where I decided to fly the whole mission from start to finish myself, with no autopilot. I've also started flying without the plane's location on the map, which is really fun. Coming out of a dogfight, having no idea where you are and having to use the landscape, compass and map to return to base or, as more often is the case, find a friendly airfield to dump my hole-ridden aircraft before I bleed to death.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to playing WOTR a lot more in the future and look forward to future updates. I'm particularly looking forward to the possibility of doing rhubard and circus ops over France that will come later. I don't think I've seen these operations by RAF fighter command represented in a sim.

Welcome back to WOTR - and I'm sure you will get lots of enjoyment from it, especially with the latest developments and also the several great mods. that have been released recently (including JJJ's Mission Editor and Multi Mod, for WOTR).

Largely as a novelty, I've also recently picked up the IL2-BoX (Battle of Moscow only, since I like the early WW2 'crates). It was on sale for less than 20 USD so I figured why not, the collector's ed. with the MC.202 and the P-40 - and I agree fully that it has no immersion when compared to WOTR. Then again, IL2-1946 also has less immersion when compared to WOTR, and the padlock view in '46 is abysmal when compared to the OBD sims.

Happy flying in WOTR,
Von S smile2

Unrelated note: Those of you running AMD cards, stay away (for now) from the big 4.006 update for IL2-BoX (causes horrible terrain flickering, especially directly below the aircraft if flying low). Run ver. 4.005 instead, and make sure to run it directly via the sim's "exe," not via that horrible launcher that automatically updates to 4.006. I will probably zip up the launcher so that it doesn't "ring home" for updates, just to be on the safe side. biggrin Thank goodness for the old-school way of doing updates in WOFF/WOTR.

OT - I think you will want to be using this: http://www.pwcampaignmanager.com/pwcgbos/web/PWCGBoS.php -- far better than the default in-house campaign generator wink

Welcome back! Agreed, WOTR has them all on immersion factor. Don't forget, Jason has put Battle of Bodenplatte on sale. $19.99 for the premium edition. With the addition of PWCG, it is quite likeable.
Remember, check the Mods here in the WOTR thread page for 33lima's new CH mod and many others.

Thanks everyone.

Blade_Meister- I've just downloaded the CH Mod, looking forward to using it. The Map mod has also been indispensable for navigating.
