WOFF version 2.0 download flagged as a virus by Norton! Help! - 12/30/14 11:56 PM

Hi everyone,

Big problems:

I just bought the 2.0 upgrade for WOFF and Norton 360 flagged it and removed it as a virus!

Is this a false positive or not?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Stefnuts

P.S.
In particular to the issue above, Norton is saying that "WS.Reputation.1 has been detected"

Please clarify folks! I don't need my new PC to die on me! LOL

Uh yes.. False positive. If it is coming from your link in the email from Avangate it is a good link and good download.
The 2.0 download came through my anti-virus without an issue.

On a side note I have always hated Norton anything. Always amazed they are still in business.

Hi Duke,

Are you sure?

Did you get this virus flag?

I'm serious.

I have never had a virus get into my PC.

Please advise sir.

Thanks & BTW I sent an email to Polovski

Stefnuts

P.S. Yes, I used the Avangate download site...The link was sent to me via email.

Nope it is not virus infected.
Passed my anti virus just fine.
In addition you are the only one to have reported this issue...plus your using Norton...hehe.
Seriously, download and install away!

Hi,

I just downloaded it again from the "alternative download location" on the Avangate site! LOL

I deleted the other download.

Hopefully, I won't even see this show up!

I'll report back.

Thank you,

By The Way, What antivirus software do YOU use?
I'm thinking about nixing Norton as nonsense like this continues to happen, not always however.

Thanks again!

I have been around for a long while and have gone through a lot of them...including Norton.
My favorite, and I forget the name now, God senility. Nset? Pol uses it. It just got pricey on renewal.

For a lot of years, since it came out (6 years?) I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials. Got an IT pal who suggested it as one of the better free ones. I figure who better to protect their product then the ones who made it. Plus it's free and has always worked without fail. My only complaint on my old computer was that it was a bit of a resource hog but on my new machine that is not an issue. My only other issue is you can't shut it off all the way when off line which I like to do.

But if anyone has any free ones to suggest I am always happy to give it a try.

Hey Stefnuts,

Do yourself a favor and uninstall Norton Antivirus, and purchase a good one like Avast. You'll be more thoroughly protected without all the false positives. yep

Isn't Avast one of the good free ones?
I (think) I tried that a year or two ago.
Liked it because you could shut it off all the way but it had some annoying pop up features if I have the right one.
Avast and one other were among the three mentioned as good anti virus products.

FWIW, according to PC Magazine, Panda is the best free anti virus followed by, in no particular order as I did not delve into the runner-ups - AVG, Avast, and MSSE.

I'm generally pleased with Norton. I also encountered the issue where it quarantined and deleted WOFF downloads. After a short interlude of wailing and gnashing of teeth, I simply disabled Norton long enough to re-accomplish the downloads.

Duke thanks for the heads up on that Panda AV..just d/l it.

Off to get it myself cptroyce as we speak.
Let me know what you think.

EDIT: Just d/l'ed and installed Panda and uninstalled MSSE.
So far so good. As long as I can shut it down all the way when off-line I should be a happy clam.
The best anti-virus is to stay off obviously stupid websites and avoid dumb "free downloads" anyway.

EDIT Part 2: Panda does have a "off" switch but I can't shut it down ALL the way through the Task Manager but it's "footprint" is 5 times smaller than MSSE. Guess I can live with that for now. Off to the front!

As per support email and PM, it's a false positive.

We have already got this in the FAQ "Frequently Asked Questions" Document.

http://www.overflandersfields.com/Downloads/FAQ%20WOFF.pdf

Section 7

"7) ANTI-VIRUS THAT CAN INTERFERE WITH WOFF INSTALL
OR RUNNING. "

See there.

On a personal note, I recommend ESET NOD Anti virus (or Smart Security = NOD + Firewall) used it for about 15 years.

ESET/NOD!
See I was, err, close.
Yep used it for 5 years. Worked well. Just didn't like the renewal price.
