Tips on landing in the dark

What is the optimal landing speed ?

I would say the slower the better. I often turn of my engine before I touch the ground. If you go to fast you risk bouncing up again, and go sideways resulting in a crash.

I guess it will come with practice. I don't want to throttle down too soon, or be too slow and lose altitude quickly before I reach the airfield.

What about using the handy flashlight you keep in your coat pocket, or fire a flair into the ground to see how close it is ??

Try to find the field first when you get low and close you can see the lit barrels maybe go over it to get your bearings more and go around again keeping the barrels in view.

My old RL gliding instructor taught me to look to the left on the downwind leg (we did conventional left-hand circuits), and capture not snapshots but visual “videos” to get one’s bearings ready for the base leg and the turn into short finals.

Given that the approach speeds and altitudes are similar in WOFF, I find that I'm still using his advice. With judicious use of the blip switch - after all those old Biggles books I tend to be in a Camel more often than not.
