Maximum Power Bad for the Engine?

Maximum Power Bad for the Engine? - 04/08/21 03:22 PM

Hi,

I have returned to WOFF after several years absence, now with BH&HII, and whilst in training on the BE2 in 1915 I have noticed that full power on the throttle is around 1650 rpm. but if I press down on the 0 button on my keyboard for a couple of seconds I get vroom vroom and the rpm goes up to c. 1800 rpm and will stay there until I move the throttle (at which point full power is back to 1650 rpm). Is this a new feature, or has it been around for a long time? Capt. Triggers is very reticent on the subject, as on many things, but I suspect that it might lead to a much increased chance of engine failure if used for too long (?). If this is not a feature of WOFF, It must be that my joystick needs calibrating - but it is such a cool feature, as the earlier version of the RAF1A engine had a 'normal' full speed of 1600 rpm for 90 hp but could be revved up to 1800 rpm for 100 hp. Later, the engine was uprated to 100 hp at 1800 rpm and could be revved up to a new maximum of 2000 rpm 'for a few minutes only' smile

I have kept full throttle and perform dives to test over-revving. My wings start to break off, but no engine damage due to high RPMs. Unfortunately, I don't think over-revving is modeled in WOFF.

I had hoped the new sim would introduce over-revving plus overcooling/overheating engines. But it was not a popular feature to include any type of engine management when it was discussed in a previous thread.

Over revving may or may not be modeled but temperature certainly is. Ask any of us S.E.5 drivers about engine fires. Yikes!

Those fires are random (e.g similar to dice rolls) and not because of anything that you forgot to do or didn't do with the engine. Although, I must add that WOFF does have more frequent engine failures/fires for some aircraft based on their historical characteristics. So, not all aircraft have the same frequency of failures/fires. Again, not because of any engine management you did or didn't do.

Oil Temperature is not modeled and radiators don't function to lower temperature in WOFF, hence that's why I said there is no over cooling or overheating engine modeling in WOFF. Maybe in the future, OBD would consider full engine management.

Hi,

Thank you for the responses.

Turned out to be just my joystick - tested it by unplugging in flight, and tapping (rather than holding down) the 0 key put it up to 1800 rpm where it stayed. I guess holding down the 0 key had the effect of over-riding the throttle input from the joystick, which just needs to be recalibrated on the throttle axis.

I guess I should have tested that first! But I will wait until I am out of training before I re-calibrate it, as it is such a cool (if accidental, on my part) feature smile

I can understand why these things are not fully modelled, as returning after a fairly long absence I can confirm that the learning curve for a flight sim like this is hard enough without introducing lots of fiddly engine management aspects.
