And a stupid question.

And a stupid question. - 10/30/19 07:16 PM

As stated a dumb question for someone that has played OFF/WOFF since release. 10 years? 12?
Anyway I think the answer is “No” but does bomb weight effect aircraft performance?

Re: And a stupid question. - 10/30/19 07:35 PM

Yes it does.
One of the delights of making FMs is also testing aircraft flight models with take off/landing with and without various loads, and repeat with AI in control wink

Excellent. Thank you sir! Glad to hear I was wrong.
I shall have to be most careful then all “bombed up.”

No, it does not nope

Umm, I think the FM builder would know
Just sayin

You can make simple test - take Gotha with full load of bombs and fuel and do a test flight (note the take off distance, speeds, manoueverability, max vertical speeds/climb speeds, etc.). Then repeat the same without load and compare. Result?
No difference.

Re: And a stupid question. - 10/31/19 05:09 PM

I have to agree with Jara.

There is no discernible difference in flight characteristics with or without the payload. The Camel should be a Cow with bombs onboard. I should be forced to drop my bombs and forfeit the success of the mission to save my hide, or hold on to the eggs and pray the escort can clear my tail (unlikely).
I’m not whining. It is what it is and I’ve learned to close my eyes to it, but I do wish there was a secret button to turn that feature on.
Does CFS allow for “heavy” flight model when loaded with bombs? I was under the impression that was not possible.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/04/19 04:47 PM

A new (stupid) question, this time about Lone Wolf:
After the enemies did need help from a tree to shot me down I started a new campaign before 1917. So I could fly as Lone Wolf the first 3 times. I recogniced, that in all 3 flights "my friends" were already over my airfield. So I had to fight only short moment after the start.
My question: which kind of Lone Wolf missions does the system allow?

Thank you for answer!

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/04/19 05:54 PM

Well it does affect it just not so much in some tests. Try more bombs and it will take longer to take off. FE2b for example is less powered than the Gotha adding bombs it takes longer, and if you edit to add a lot more bombs it takes longer etc.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/04/19 06:23 PM

So based on Pol's comments it is tuneable if desired.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/04/19 07:18 PM

Have you tried that?

No but based on what he says it seams worth the effort if you want a customized approach.

Morane Parasol with 4 x 112lb bombs? Why not wink

Yes, it really works! thumbsup
Nieuport N11 with 8 x 112 lb bombs could not take off:

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 10:47 AM

I do not have access to test, but I believe OPs original question was regarding performance during flight. ie will that same N11 in an air start have lift or drop? And is there better lift if payload is dropped one at a time?

Similar performance question could be asked about full tank vs almost empty fuel?

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 11:25 AM

Furthermore... the consumtion of fuel affects the performance as the thrust to weight ratio changes?

Already asked by orbyxP (missed it)

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 12:41 PM

Oooo, LePrieur bombs! Just the thing I need for those Panzers.
So, does that mean the bombs should be made heavier to make the flight characteristics feel different?

Yep, it seems you are right.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 01:31 PM

I believe this can be done via bombs xdp files.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 01:59 PM

Please excuse me, but I don't understand. Maybe I should have explained it better.
So back to my question again: I have a Lone Wolf mission, stand on my airfield with my AlbDII and immediately there are Np and Sw strutter above me.
What shall I do with bombs now?
And are all lone wolf mission of this kind or do they have a dynamic factor?

Thank you and Sorry!

Remove safety pins and drop them immediately biggrin
Sorry, I could not resist wink .
We were discussing about "Stupid question No.1".

Yes @jjj65, its clear (smile!).
I tried to remember on my question with a very gentle way, without to disturb your interesting discussion. And I was not sure, if my question was concret enough.

That's war Becker01. Sometimes you are ******.
Maybe run for the dug out or hut instead.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/05/19 07:27 PM

Lone Wolf Missions were flights in the war, which the pilots have done alone over the region in my knowledge (or is it an error from my side).
And after 3 lone wolf missions with fights directly over the airfield after the start I only wanted to know, if it was fortuitously and other kind of lone wolf missions are possible, or not.

That's all and a normal question in my eyes!

A lone wolf mission is just a mission you fly alone to 'hunt' enemy aircraft, so yes, you understanding is correct.

The missions in WOFF are generated randomly so if you had enemies hovering over the airfield three missions in a row that is just bad luck, not a normal thing or a designed part of the game as far as I know.

Cheers!

Good idea thumbsup. We can simulate real bombload weight by increasing the "Mass: " value in bomb xdp files.
Posted By: Polovski

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/06/19 11:07 AM

Yep it's random, 3 missions is not enough of a sample to conclude anything. Even when fixing some types of bugs one of the problems you think it's fixed after 20 runs, then on the 21st bingo it reappears and back to the drawing board.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/07/19 03:49 AM

Had time for only a very quick test.

hope my math is right....

DH4

(from xdp file) MaxWeight (2352) & DryWeight (1636), difference is 716 lbs.

Two 230 lb bombs = 460 lbs

Therefore, with two crew, two 230 lb, and one 112 lb bombs, the engine should not produce enough thrust to takeoff (i.e. maximum takeoff weight).... and that didn't happen with stock WOFF PE.

Then I "fixed" the mass values and the result was as expected.

[Linked Image]

230 lb Mass fixed to "404.33"
112 lb Mass fixed to "350.80"

It's interesting to note that fuel was burning as it was trying to roll around the field, and the DH4 eventually had enough thrust to take off after 44% fuel was remaining.

Re: And a stupid question. - 11/07/19 06:34 AM

I did similar test with Aviatik CI yesterday. Increased weight of PUW 10 kg bombs to 50 kilos and with 4 x 50 kilos (ie. 200kg) bombload the Aviatik behaved almost as expected. Just almost, because I would expect yet worse performance, however, IMHO, more realistic than stock WOFF UE (PE).
