Is WOFF finally dead?

Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/12/17 08:38 AM

No new patch or content for almost a year.
Practically a non-existent modding community.
This forum like a grave yard with mostly OT content.

Is it finally really over?
And yes, yes I get the reasons but I deal in results.
Too bad for the greatest flight sim ever to end like this.

lol, no. There's a brand new product on the way. Woff set the standard for ww1 sims and new people take it up every week. Following the release of WotR there should be a renewed interest in WoFF also. These products will be around for the next 10 years or so.

Dramatic post aside ...

In answer to your question

The facts:

1) The last WOFF patch was in April 2017, I make that just five months ago - not even half a year.

2) We released a free download "New Albatros D.III OAW skins pack" for WOFF Ultimate Edition by James ‘OvS’ on 20th June 2017 (less than 3 months ago - see the Store page to download)

3) We have been discussing the next patch internally in the last few days and with a few contributors. We intend to do one soon.

4) We publicly announced when starting WOTR that we had not finished with WOFF and that once WOTR is released we hope to transfer any new cool stuff to WOFF.
So I'll say that again here.

5) It is still our intention to do more Add-ons for WOFF and have been discussing content recently internally.

Not bad for team of 2 people working on a new product.

Your post intended or not, is in total error and could also stop people buying and supporting us, which as you know we need to help us continue. So these posts do nothing except create myth and affect sales.

Matt has it right - thanks for posting that Matt.

One other thing, even IF we had stopped development on WOFF it also does make it a "dead" product or undesirable, it's still a fantastic WW1 sim with unequalled features.

.

Hey Duke, good to see you. I must disagree with you though on WOFF, it is far from expired. It has been quieter around the forums but that may be due in part to summer and folks have other things going on. I have been absent for a while due to family matters and work but I am still active in the modding. And to your comment about the modding, keep in mind that most of the low hanging fruit has been picked in terms of the mods so what is now left tends to be incredibly time-consuming and tedious to build. I personally have four different mods in various stages of build, each of which will gobble up hundreds of hours of my time to complete, which I am hoping to be able to do once winter settles upon us. There is also still an ongoing DID campaign and new screenshots and WOFF artwork being posted regularly. And we've just brought in another new member to the BOC.

So don't proclaim the old girl gone just yet my friend.

Re: Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/12/17 11:05 AM

Yes, yes of course. Oh well.

I looked at the date of the 4.15 patch thread start (October 2016) and see it was updated in April 2017. I will own that error.

I did forget about the OvS Skin Pack from last summer. I thought of this as more associated with OvS and not OBD.

I am not privy to your "internal discussions."

And yes I remember when it was said WOFF is not forgotten whenever WOTR was released. But, believe it or not, I hear a lot of things on the internet.

Sorry for the "drama."
If you really feel this thread is bad for sales feel free to delete it.

Re: Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/12/17 11:14 AM

.

Duke, I for one don't see why the thread should be deleted, you were voicing an opinion and a concern. Can't speak for others here but I wasn't offended by it, and you are correct about there not being much in the way of WOFF updates coming from the devs. But then that is owing to their latest WWII project which, I am hoping, will result in not only a great WWII flight sim but also a fair amount of new goodies being ported over into WOFF because of it.

Now then, if you wouldn't mind, how about you hop over to the flying room thread and show us some shots of where you like to work your own WOFF magic from. I'd certainly like to see your digs. smile2

Re: Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/12/17 11:16 AM

We are not "the internet" we are OBD smile

As the WOFF team James and myself worked together - with his feedback I improved the Albatros 3d models to allow him to make some of the new changes in the skins.
He then had a lot of work to make them and took some time to complete of course, but stunning work.

Of course I know you are not privy, but best not to assume - if it's dead we'll say so (unless we are too).

Sometimes things are quiet because people are very busy working 100s and 1000s of hours to make something (with their head down!). We'll get there,

Sounds great Pol. Sorry for the doubts. Old age does that. When you are 20 you can wait forever. As you get older time gets more precious and waiting for anything is torture.
Carry on gentlemen! Guess I'll see you over the front.

And Lou, my "WOFF Command Center and Cockpit" is currently relegated to a kitchen corner while a "pre-retirement" house renovation project has begun. All my WW1 paraphernalia is boxed up and in the basement but my computer is still out and useable. Hopefully I'll live long enough to see it completed!

Ah yes, the pre-retirement house projects, I have a few of those too Duke as I am hanging it up myself a year from this November. So we'll give you this one, but once you have things put back together we want pics of your cockpit. smile2

There are also those of us who've been around and following WOFF for years but usually don't speak up on the forum. I visit almost daily but rarely post!

There will also be a new Rick Rawlings challenge in the not too distant future, for those who go in for such foolishness. That should generate some "below the line" reading for a few weeks, anyway... salute

WOOO HOOO! Another one of your challenges Rick, that will be super. Give me some advanced notice and I can get the gongs ready for it.

Well, this thread made developers and modders show their cards and post future or inminent releases, so it´s been worth it;)

Not offended by the thread in any way either... it was a valid question in my book smile
And yes, I tend to visit daily too, have a quick scan of the news and then skeedaddle!!!
Just been flying a few quick battles actually

Harumphh! Sir, I beg to differ!
My second will be in contact with your second! Which do you prefer: pistols boom or sabers? lightsabers

I do appreciate your frustration, Duke. It has been fairly quiet around here. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to read some of the many fine stories posted in the Reports from the Front and DiD Centenary Challenge threads. There is some real talent there.

Re: Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/13/17 02:13 AM

The modding is really terrific..IMHO.
Between JJJ's ME and Buckeye Bob's Cloud Mod and OvS skins and I apologize for missing other mods, things are pretty vibrant at the moment.

Perhaps like some others, I don't post a lot, but visit and read the forum posts daily.

There is not, and probably never will be another WW1 sim like WOFF.

I do hope that WOFF will go on another 10 years. ( In that amount of time I may get at least 1 pilot thru the War.) Its been a source of great fun and associating with good people in the forum.

I have only ever got one pilot through the war and that was in Olham's DiD. Campaign.

I remember one other instance that frustrated me and that was when Banker's squadron transfered to Italy and my campaign came to an did with no way to advance him to get back in the western theatre.

Re: Is WOFF finally dead? - 09/13/17 04:24 PM

I think it's great OBD has taken a short break from WOFF. There is nothing better for the creative juices than to walk away for a little while and work on something else.

This sim will be around for a very long time, and nothing in the near future will come close to replacing it. Just have patience as we all have had. It's not easy doing what it takes to make a mod this size work and keep adding to it.

I'm looking forward to whatever becomes of WOTR and what is brought back to WOFF. I know these guys 10+ years and needless to say, they are tireless... Dead?? hell no... I'd say more like incubating.

All the best,

OvS

We are not familiair to this kind of discussion on this forum, but I still think it is not wrong in asking. So in my case thanks for starting this topic, lots of info I do read here.
One thing I would like to write down, A new update, mmm, always welcome, only I'm still not finished. Right now besides my fav MS parasol in Alsace, I did discover the USAforce. Thats is always happen, for some strange reason I notice always something that is intresting.

edit thanks OBD to keep WW1 sim alive, thankU.

Things have been a bit quiet lately, so nice to see a little action on the forum and hear those comments from Pol (even if it is just repeating past info ... some of use are a tad forgetful).

I hope to get back into the swing of WOFF when the rainy winter weather hits in a month or two. Been a busy summer.

So jealous. Here on the east coast that same season is called "snow up to your keester." smile2

Like others, I check simHQ often, but only post now and again.

But I do not understand this 'dead' concept regards games. Woff is to all intents and purposes a complete product, with lots of base content, extensive campaigns and damn good AI. Other than a few exrtra crates we would all like to see, how can it be dead?

ATM it is the single most comprehensice WW1 combat flight sim available. And I don't see any other titles on the horizon to change this.

Yeah, but with snow up to your keester at least you can stay inside and WOFF! And maybe even WOTR by that time! I was busy enough and then this idiot Equifax breach hit, and extra time at work, and fall cleanup outside, and my brother-in-law needs my help for an art sales trip to New York. My wife wonders what I do on the computer all the time, well it danged sure isn't WOFF, much as I'd like it to be

And yeah, devere, well said. What are you drinking?

Perhaps.
Just, in a moment of weakness apparently, I wanted MOAR of the WOFF goodness.
Figured it can't go on forever but there will never be a better WW1 aviation game in my lifetime and I just can't get enough of anything OBD puts out for it.

And you Modders too - a big thanks there. Got just about everything you guys do.

Patches, tweaks, add-on's, expansions, whatever I am your huckleberry.
Bring it! smile
