The "Dead Space" games - 08/17/12 01:40 PM

I bought DS 1 and DS 2 last night on Steam since they were 75% off and I'm looking forward to playing them. They strike me as being horror sci-fi with shooter combat added. Did anyone else here play them and enjoy them?

Yes, I've played some of DS1 and a little of DS2 and they both scare the hell out of me lol. If you like games where you have a constant feeling that something will (and does) jump out at you, or running for a door with 'something' coming after you and getting there just in time, then you'll enjoy them.

Ok cool. Can I ask why you didn't finish the games? Did you get bored with the gameplay or story?

I played the first Dead Space on PS3. Got all the trophies. Definitely worth picking up for $5, or even $10.

Never played DS2, but have heard that it is better than the first.

I couldn't play DS1 with any USB controllers plugged in and had to unplug everything so it became a pain and with DS2, I was playing but when I had to reformat I didn't re-install again yet.

DS1 is really a great game with fantastic visuals and atmosphere. It's like a mix of Alien and The Thing. Creepy. DS2 is IMHO a bit worse since it's focused more on action than horror but it's still a good one.

I can highly recommend the first game, I don't know yet about the second, however, as I haven't picked it up yet. There are a few PC specific technical bugs, such as the USB input device issue (your GUI screen elements will shift to one corner of the screen and render the game useless!), which affects almost everyone, but there is a work around that worked for me that I'll have to google, as it's been a while since I last played it.

Ok, no big deal for me. I just have to make sure my joystick isn't connected when I play the game.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/17/12 05:11 PM

That will also work.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/17/12 05:23 PM

That's what I always do. In fact, it's why I usually never fly in Arma 2 because I never have the stick connected when I go in and it takes too long to exit, connect it, calibrate, reload, rejoin server...

Anyway, it took me 19 hrs for DS1 and 16 for DS2, so the sequel was a little shorter. I get the feeling DS3 might be shorter yet, with the emphasis on co-op indicating they plan on you replaying the game multiple times.

Not that the first 2 aren't that way as well. Like many RPGs, you can replay the game a 2nd time with the same "character" at a harder level, but I've yet to do that.

There are a couple of anime movies on netflix you can stream that fill in the story around the game.

As soon as I finish my playthrough of "Rage" I'll move on to Dead Space. I'm quite stoked about playing it now.

You can't do that with DS1. If you change difficulty levels, you start with the basic starting equipment, no upgrades.

Oh, maybe that's what DS2 said and I've already forgotten what DS1 said when I finished it. All I know is I'd just finished it, anticipating playing DS2 next, when this "Ok, now you can play it again blah blah blah..." message came up. I didn't really pay close attention.

If you want to keep all your upgrades, you have to play the same difficulty level again. The second time through is good though, because then you can make sure everything is upgraded to max. Also, you might use weapons the second time through that you didn't use the first time.

That is how my second playthrough went.

Great game. I have played DS1 and beat it. The story is really good. Reminds me of Aliens a lot, and yes it does scare the crap out of me.

I bought DS1 on a Steam-sale, but I`m still at the very beginning. Will have go for it again.

So many games, not enough time....

Started playing DS 1 and I love the creepy atmosphere. I've only put about an hour into it so far but I've already killed many of the mutants. I like the modified 3rd person view the game uses where your focal point is a bit behind and to the right.

Dead space 2 has multi player, I haven't played much, but it looks interesting.

I know DS 3 will have a cooperative mode. Is the MP in DS 2 just deathmatch-type modes?

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/24/12 11:03 AM

lol,

tried it yesterday evening (had to restart from the beginning, as I lost my saves in a HDD failure), went down one deck, opened the door through shooting at this energy-thingy next to it, but I can`t go through that door. I`m pretty sure I was further into the game when I played it the last time. I guess I`ll redownload it from steam.

I bought one of them from D2D. Couldn't really get into it because of control issues. I might pick up the console versions at some point for a more effecient experience.

Or get a gamepad for the PC, probably cheaper.

Think my Logi one cost $20.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/27/12 09:21 PM

I've put about 5 hours into the game so far and I'm really liking it except for some of the awkward key and mouse commands. The game is pretty freaky.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/27/12 10:13 PM

Thanks Jedi. I Keep forgetting that I have a wired usb 360 controler that I think I can use on the pc with the correct software. Never tried it before but there's a couple of games I must say that would be easier on the hands with a controller.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/28/12 02:31 PM

You've got Win7, IIRC that natively has the drivers for the wired 360 controller. If not, I'm sure after you plug it in Windows Update will grab them in minutes.

I use the controller for basically console game ports that never worked right with kb/mouse, like the recent Tomb Raider games, Lego Indiana Jones, and Force Unleashed 1/2.

Hmmm, I'll give that a try Jedi.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 08/29/12 01:56 AM

I've adopted an XBOX 360 controller setup (w/ Chatpad) via Xpadder that has become my preferred PC input device. It doesn't replace the KB/M for FPS's, but it really excels w/ RTS and 3PS's.

I'm almost done playing "Dead Space" for the first time and I have to say, this is definitely the creepiest game that I've payed since FEAR. This game has actually made me jump in my seat a few times.

Re: The "Dead Space" games - 09/24/12 08:07 PM

Yes, having just replayed Doom 3 I appreciate DS's NON-use of "monster closets" and other cheap triggers. They went genuine for once.
