Re: Future Plan (SAM SIMULATOR) - 08/16/12 11:46 AM

Current close future plan is to sit in the Sunny Beach of Greece. biggrin

When I get back in development, I will tune the existing OAF scenarios a little bit (they will be tougher), and correct the upcoming bugs.

Have you ever considered porting the code to Linux?

I don't know if you're aware, but SAMSIM will work through wine. Though I had to play about with settings a little first to get it working.

I've had it working in Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04.

There seems to be a huge memory leak when you use the game normally in WINE, meaning you can only run it for a minute at most before your system is in trouble. I found a way to fix it though.

I copied the file oleaut32 . dll from a windows vista machine, and put it in the same directory as sam.exe. Then in the libraries tab of wine config, I found oleaut32 . dll in the overide menu and added it, so wine would actually use the file.

There also seems to be a problem where your desktop or software running under Linux will steal keyboard focus away from sam sim, meaning you can't press any keys. To fix that select "Emulate a virtual desktop" under the graphics tab of wine config. And set the desktop size to 1280x1024.

This completely fixes the memory leak, and the keyboard problem. The game now works fine for me under Ubuntu 12.04.

Under 10.04 however, there still is a problem after the oleaut32 . dll fix and the game will freeze after a couple of switch clicks. The only solution I've found so far is to disable sound. But it'll work fine, as long as you're okay playing in silence.

I have no idea what problems anyone else has had getting SAMSIM working under Linux, but this is what I had to do to get it working through Wine. Hope it helps.

No, as this is a quite old code, written in MS Visual Basic 6.

You deserve the vacation, and keep up the good work Hpasp.
Thereīs not that many hardcore nerdy SIMīs about so keep up the good work. Personally I canīt wait for the Nike Hercules system.

One thing i would love; even more than the NIKE; is the BOMARC!! Now THAT WOULD BE CRAZY! A full SAGE/BOMARC simulator. Wow... i've just had the best idea. There is a lot of documentation in english on the internet; too.

I was about to propose the S-25 Berkut too.

How well, the SAMSIM simulates the S-75M3 Volhov system?
Probably, this is the best free simulation available, but I'm aware of those points, where the system operation is simplified.
(RS/AS/AS-AP,RL-TV, ARU, RRU, etc)

If I would ever create an S-300PMU simulation, than it would be the best free SAMSIM available, but less authentic than the Volhov.

Currently my 100% effort goes to OSA-AK.

Now most of the switches (and they are beautiful) are switchable [without any effect], and I'm learning the system operation.
(In my dreams, Im already firing with it)
biggrin

Trust me, that this will be THE all time favorite system for all the SAMSIM beginners.

After OSA, more SA5 situations are planned, over the Baltic's, and Vladivostok.

I am looking forward to the SA-8. I hope it is a fun system.

But I am more looking forward even more to new SA-5 missions and features.

Two years ago Hpasp said this

Quote:
1. What do these do?

They, with the wheel on the right lower part of the "s" screen, and with the RU button on the "c" screen are not implemented, and against ARMs.

It is called RU-V tracking.
These will be implemented with the Libyan scenarios later.

Is that in SAM Simulator now? Some of the switches and buttons mentioned do something, but I can't figure out what, or how it would be useful against ARMs.

You can re-aim the flying missile into an incoming ARM.
Also it can be used against VGPO jamming.
Not implemented yet in the SAMSIM.

As we all learned, Soviet SAM system developers had the general system usability pretty low on their priority list during system design.
Especially with the most capable system of all, the S-75M3 Volhov (SA-2E) where I have always the feeling of "hey, there is some space left on the cabinet, put another switch there"!
dizzy

After several 3rd world communist SAM user country suffered, Soviets started to create more logically usable systems (the white series), and the first of these is the OSA, and the pinnacle is the S-300P series, where the next button to be pushed by the operator is illuminated by the system (beside of auto-locking on incoming HARM's, and the possibility of auto-engaging...)
biggrin

Another step further is the Patriot, where instead of "fighting" (acquiring and tracking target, selecting preparing and launching missiles) you are simply "managing" the battle. (selecting and approving targets to be automatically engaged by the system)

Check video from 6m 38s...

The high resolution capability of the multi-functional radar ensures discrimination and engagements of targets flying in dense formations...
... designation and acquisition of targets, including the separating ones, are automatic.

It would be nice if there is Hint an Function for non Russian(or what ever it is) Language Speakers.
I think a Little Mouse Over Hint with an Translation to English would be very useful so that i go over an switch an in the Mouseover stands in English what the switch is for.

Would be very useful special for beginners and so on.

I try to keep or elevate the realism level of SAMSIM in each consequent release.
Realistic IKO is planned (with ground clutter), but it depends on the load on the CPU that it generates.
No point to include it, and then SAMSIM would not be enjoyable for the users with an average CPU.

Priority is Karat.
(Just imagine, low flying A-4 Skyhawk formation over Cairo...)
Posted By: Alien_MasterMynd

Re: Future Plan, SAM SIMULATOR - 05/23/13 06:44 PM

Yes, Karat is very very superb!!!!

The reason why I asked for IKO is to get some clues about future of SAMSIM. Maybe when time for it comes, most of the people will have even average CPU of those days, but in that time it would be like high speed CPU's now :-)
And of course such computation intensive tasks could be disabled in menu (like digital terrain just now) :-)

piston79: Hmm good point, I've got the manuals for the TALOS system, all the way from GMM1 through Chief. However I will admit I don't have any good photos of the panels.

Does anyone happen to have access to the panels for the SON-9 (Fire Can) and similar radar directors? I think they'd be an interesting counterpoint to the SA-2 for the Vietnam era.

There were three "design" schemes used over the years.

Blue scheme, the standard Coldwar color...

S-25M Berkut (SA-1)
S-75M Volhov (SA-2E)
S-125M Neva (SA-3B)
2K11 KRUG (SA-4B)
S-200VE Vega (SA-5B)

Silver Hammer finish, the most beautiful one...
SA-75M Dvina (SA-2F)
ZSU-23-4 Shilka
2K12 KUB (SA-6)

White finish, the modern one...
9K33 OSA (SA-8)
S-300PT Biryusa (SA-10A)
S-300PS/PMU Volhov-M6 (SA-10B)

The design color has no relation to the functionality of the equipment.

Wow, SON-9, SA-11 and SA-8. Future is looking bright!

I'm imagining some distant future version SAM Simulator, where we can play with each over the internet, SA-2s, SA-3s ... SA-999, Shilkas, SON-9s, even IADS. An entire air defence system with humans actually controlling things.

Then some smart person can create a way of connecting us to DCS World, so we can shoot down all the human pilots who are used to playing against stupid AI air defences biggrin

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 07/21/13 02:45 PM

Farokh, it's not just the SON-9. It's the SA-11, SA-8 and SON-9, and a good chance of TV and optic modes being added to the ZSU-23-4, SA-2 and SA-4.

A few months ago, I was thinking that Hpasp would run out of systems to put into SAM Simulator. I was wrong, very wrong. The speed Hpasp is adding new things is increasing!

It's not just a SON-9, it's a sign there's much more to come in the future!

-----

piston79, yes there's DCS already, the aircraft and aircraft weapons in DCS are great, but the SAMs are unrealistic cartoon jokes. Besides, I want to shoot down human pilots, not bad computer AI pilots.

But it probably won't happen frown

http://198.65.10.229/DID/Temp/DSCF2362.JPG

...but couldn't get past the long wait times (loading and working). It takes a mere couple of seconds to open VB6 under Win2K on my reliable old Dell, and output files are small and few. Not to mention the first releases of VB.NET didn't include major features like Edit and Continue and you still can't compile to native code (secure executable). EDIT: Also, older software isn't always trying to "phone home", my work PC is never online.

I see you've even used VB6's integrated Package and Deployment (setup.exe), smart thinking as it works fine with Win7/64-bit (unlike InstallShield 2x). I panicked a few years back thinking MS was going to remove VB6 runtime support from Windows (Vista). Now I'm convinced this will never happen in my lifetime, VB.NET maybe but not VB6.

Have you thought about porting or are you going to stick it out with VB6?

During the next weeks, I'm adding some new situations (Operation Moduler), and enhancing some of the existing ones (Operation El Dorado Canyon).

But these will be released with the OSA, far-far away...

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 10/28/13 07:35 PM

There will be a completely new firing range introduced, called NAMFI with 3 NATO specific targets.

I plan to add the Cuito Cuanavale situation, where a South African Mirage F1 was killed.

Also I would like to add Libya situations, and Egypt as non-historical ones...

Nope.

Recreating realistic Karat view might take several years...
... but at the end, you will see an RM launch (at Ashuluk) in a different way, you see it currently.

Hm.. No, thanks! nope
My life is too short to wait for a realistic KARAT (an almost useless device IMHO) years from now.... I guess it is fun for you to code some visual objects, but not good old radar screen anime...
Hope you'll earn some money, making the SAM Sim with KARAT a valuable asset to some other general arms sim....

P.S. I've sent you some data for "Baltic express", also I got some time schedule for Kadena flights, but as your project goes in a way, which makes such data useless, you could delete those files.

dear hpasp... i should say piston79 is right
as you know better than me...
samsim Known only for realistic panels and switches and great ideas behind this software

because access to the real panels for normal people was denied in all of countries !
so samsim give this gift to the people who want to see them as realistic !

did you think till now, why samsim users dont work with DCS : combine arms ?
because we LOVE realistic thing ...
we want to know the truth about sam systems ....
because we LOVE to analyze them ...
so why ? because we LOVE sam systems !

and the other side we LOVE hpasp and love samsim 4 ever salute

In general I know that around Athens ,especially in Marathon and Salamina, there are a lot of thousands of Persians but unfortunately I can't ask them for what you prompt me to do ...

7777 it is not difficult to explore it over the Internet,it is common in air defense as an issue .

As far as about TOTOBA, I am speechless .You got me .I don't know what it is ! If you didn't mention that it is a lamp,I would bet that is something close
to TATANGA ,if you you have seen the relevant movie !

If the specific lamp is to indicate the READY it should write GOTOB , the same with OSA AK.

I do know about IFF and 7777, you think that I can apply for job in IRAN air defense ?

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 12/18/13 01:20 PM

Q&A

Is there a chance that "OSA" release will be before 31.12.2013?

100% no. nope

I still have work left on the displays (missile rage gate).
In current state I have only Training scenarios: Hungary, Ashuluk, Ustka, and NAMFI.

I would like to include some WARTIME scenarios also when I release it.
(Libya, Angola, Egypt)

Documentation is only 20% ready. (no translations started yet)

My hand is full with other project for the holiday season.

One more - are those "holiday" projects related with SAM systems?
If you're participating with SAM modeling in another weapons sim?

I'm heavily involved in learning the operations of 7K-T Soyuz, and 7K-STMA Soyuz-TMA spacecraft.

In 2014, I will try to finish OSA for SAMSIM and the Mission Editor, where anybody could create - save - and share situations.

The Mission Editor, I think of, should not require any programming at all.
It will be easy to use for anyone, to create and share missions.

I am thinking of starting simulating Western SAM systems...
... historically the first could be the MIM-3 Nike Ajax, then MIM-14 Nike Hercules, Improved Nike Hercules, and the Nike Hercules ATBM system.

I have all the required information, except the required quality photos...
... so it could be a kind of 'synthetic' panel.

Any opinion on this?

i choose mim-23 hawk ... because iran is a greate user of this system
this system is the best system iran had
but about the historical scenario
im not sure that i cant help ...
maybe 2 scenario if i find

I have no knowledge on Nike Ajax panel existing anywhere.
Improved Nike Hercules is in Italy, while Nike Hercules ATBM is in San Francisco.

I still find fascinating the development, where if you learn to operate the Nike Ajax (system with similar capabilities as the Dvina), you would be able to figure out Improved Nike Hercules (a system closer to Vega) without reading the manual.

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 01/18/15 01:21 PM

And how about modeling the CIM-10 Bomarc?
Nuclear tipped missiles, you can go wrong with proximity detonations biggrin

Regarding scenarios for SAM simulator, I believe that I gave this suggestion before but why not build fictional scenarios?
And if those fictional scenarios are to have random or randomized events such random number of enemy aircraft and random enemy aircraft flights, this would IMO give the player with following advantages:
- When playing a fictional scenario for the first time the player wouldn't have a clue of what will happen as opposed to a historical scenario which an informed player could have some level of knowledge about what will happen.
- A scenario with randomized events would be much interesting in terms or re-playability since every time a player would play such a scenario things could happen differently.
For the developer (Hpasp) fictional scenarios would IMO have the following advantage:
- I believe it would be easier to develop a fictional scenario since there's no need to research for as much information as needed when compared to historical scenarios. All it would need (for fictional scenarios) is good deal of imagination and to make this easier the developer could ask the community for ideas regarding fictional scenarios.

Finally, I want to say that I actually enjoy historical scenarios very much but IMO a mix of historical and fictional scenarios is always a good thing to have in any simulation.

The CIM-10 BOMARC is an interesting air defense system...
... its similar to the Soviet S-50 Dal (SA-5 Griffon) that was never fielded due technical difficulties.

From FCO point of view, it would be the most boring air defense simulator, I can imagine...
... it would be similar to an IADS sim.

I meant that it was a mid-course updated, self guiding weapon, without any dedicated fire control radar.
Just target acquisition radars were used to guide the weapon in the vicinity of the target, than it would self guide itself onto it, using an on-board active radar.

While the S-50 Dal was abandoned and never fielded, the BOMARC was operational** in 8+2* US bases between 1959..1972.
*in Canada
** testing was ongoing still in 1972, with varying results...

Thanks for the info Hpasp thumbsup

Speaking about the Bomarc, one of the Canadian Bomarc sites operated by the 446 SAM Squadron (located at CFB North Bay, Ontario) still exists, albeit of course deactivated - The site can be seen on Google Earth or Google maps at the following coordinates:

46š25'46''N 079š28'16''W

Here's the satellite view of that Bomarc site operated by the RCAF/CAF 446 (SAM) Squadron:

Ground level photos of the (abandoned) site can be seen on the following page:

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 01/19/15 04:18 PM

I can understand the enthusiasm for BOMARC...
... only one site in Hungary could cover most of Eastern Europe, and endanger HABU flights over West Germany.

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 01/19/15 04:40 PM

LoL! And the nuclear warhead means that the missile doesn't need to be that precise - The missile detonated "by proximity" 1Km away from the target?? No problem biggrin

Of course if this was to be a common situation in real world, people would start having things like a 3rd eye popping on the forehead or something along those lines...

The initial BOMARC version had a range of 400km while the improved version had a range 710km.

Hpasp, what's the status of Kub in Hungary? In CZ it should become obsolete on 1.1.2016 (even the modernized solid-state digital version) and we will be left without any SAM.... After 60 years of history....

Can you change so that running SAM sim will be just like a window, without removing the Taskbar? Every time SAM sim crashes I can't get the taskbar back until I've rebooted the PC, which is obviously a bit of a pain.

Re: Future Plan { SAM SIMULATOR } - 02/10/16 07:39 PM

Bit of S-25 (SA-1) Berkut history.

This system was fielded for 30 years, defending Moscow between 1954..1984

S-25 the first version was fielded in 1954, with the V-300 205 missile type that was produced between 1952..54 in 2924 pieces.
The double ring around Moscow had a total of 56 regiments (systems), with 60 launcher per system.
207 missile was produced between 1954..56 with more powerful engine, in 1146 pieces.
207A missile was produced between 1954..60 with even more powerful engine (90kN), in 9467 pieces.

The first modernization S-25M was fielded in 1957.
It included the SDC, T/T guidance against jamming targets, and the nuclear armed missile against formations.
207T (215) missile had 10kt warhead, produced in 1958 of 60 pieces.

Second modernization was aimed against small fast nimble jets (like the western equivalent of the MiG-17), it was fielded in 1965.
217M missile had improved maneuverability, and range from 1962.
218 (217T) missile was the equivalent of the previous type, with "special" warhead.

Third modernization resulted the S-25MA in 1968.
5Ya25 (217MA) missile with increased range.

1st Stage of the Fourth modernization resulted the S-25MAM in 1979.
5Ya25M (217MAM) missile with increased g pulling capability.

2nd Stage of the Fourth modernization resulted the S-25MR in 1982.
5Ya24 (219) missile with jamming resistant radio proximity fuse.
44N6 (5Ya24S) missile was the equivalent of the previous type, with "special" warhead.

From 1979 the replacing of the S-25MR system around Moscow started with the S-300PT, 1:1 meaning each Sz-25MR regiment (system) was replaced with an S-300PT battery.
For 1984, the replacement was done, that year 56 S-300PT defended Moscow on a double ring.

From 1989, the replacement of the 56 S-300PT batteries started with 20 S-300PM systems in the inner ring.
On the outer ring, the firing places was deserted and sold for newly built villages.

From 2007, the replacement of the 20 S-300PM batteries started with S-400 systems.
This year the plan calls to replace the half of the units (10th S-400) around Moscow.

In the same time frame, at the other side of the pond, Nike Ajax started to be fielded...

From 1954, Baltimore (7), Chicago (22), New York (19), Philadelphia (12), San Francisco (12), and Washington (13) started to receive Nike Ajax batteries.

From 1955, Boston (12), Detroit (15), Hanford (4), Los Angeles (16), Milwaukee (8), Niagara Falls (4), Norfolk (9), Pittsburgh (12), Seattle (11) continued the Ajax deployment.

From 1956, Bridgeport (6), Buffalo (4), Cleveland (8), Fairchild AFB (4), Hartford (6), Providence (7) received Ajax systems.

In 1957, three SAC bases received the Ajax; Ellsworth AFB (4), Loring AFB (4), Travis AFB (4).

total Ajax fielding - 223 CONUS - 24 Europe - 103 Storage
total production run was - 350 systems and 13.714 missiles

dear hpasp.. im so impresive that why one modern country like hungary still using from 2k12 at this edge of technology !
if tajikistan do it or bulgaria or azarbaijan..yes cause they havent good cash for modern equipment but why your defense organization still use them ?
every one knows this system cant stand alone front of new war waves ...
it was my question.

also.. bbc persian one year ago publish that hungary in 2016 want to use modern western sam and atbm systems
of course bbc persian doesnt talk about sa6 in hungary

The situation in CZ is the same, we have a hugely upgraded Kub (all-solid-state electronics including radar and digital control), but it is the only true SAM we have. And we were among the first countries to receive the first Dvinas back in the late 50's banghead

Western side was so aware of Vega, that our corrupt politicians ordered to promptly dismantle both Vega sites and to sell the equipment to some foreign buyers. First Vega site lasted about 10 years and the second one not even that "long".

Our only S-300 passed to Slovakia, another sad story....

as hpasp said (we ran out frim cold war) its means he wants an evolution in samsim ... of course accsess to modern systems are hard and every body know this ..
hpasp is a normal person like us without any support
so we cant want something supernatural from him

but i love to know about
oldest members in here and samsim developer(hpasp) to discuss about a future (even in theory phase only)

so guys .. what is your opinion about different systems can be simulate in samsim ?

1.roland system
2.rapier
or
retired systems from west
3.mim23A first prototype
4.patriot command guided

ps1: we cant forget epap's help from aten who helping to hpasp aswel in sa8 delopment ... why we cant get another help from him for our samsim future ? he has alot of friends in aten air defense in each systems

ps2: ive question about our final dream in cold war sams... its about sa-6
each people knows that hungary and cz upgrade themself in sa6 completly ...
with this upgrades ... we have alot of different in analog sa6 and digital version of it ...
so why you dear (hpasp) cant access to oldest version of sa6 ? i remember oldest sa6 (used against our phantom E by iraq) with maximum 17km range
and im sure there is alot of different between modern sa6 in servise and oldest sa6 in meuseum !

Crazy idea...
Lets design our own system for Hpasp to create. smile

All of us would throw in ideas, and we could debate what would go into our system and what not. We could limit ourselves to cold war era technology. And be very thorough... Go into all the details of a missile, radar, everything really. It would be difficult but interesting as #%&*$#! biggrin

Maybe Im just wishfull, what do you all think, Hpasp?

It was a deliberate plan to demilitarize the "unreliable" Eastern Europe. In order for "peaceful colonization". Think about who has overseen the destruction of the ukrainian military the same way... (then) Senator Obama. Now their government overthrown by external support - they became "reliable". This is how things work.

Actually a mission editor is exist, that is how I made the situations.
But its not in a releasable state (quite complex, no documentation, and sometimes require code change), but if there is interest, please open a topic for it, and start collecting requirements.

I am interested in new historical scenarios, more SAM functions simulated and some new types jamming maybe...
I guess doing missions for us is the last thing you would do with joy, probably the mission editor is the solution for both sides......

Also apart from already mentioned suggestions (better Vega simulation - incoming ARM detection, more anti/jamming modes and so on, mission editor) I would suggest RD-75 for Volchov and PRV's for all SAMs. thumbsup I think the latter could be quite easy to implement.

Nice. You could also add ASAT seeker, it had a form of strips which rotated (whole device rotated) to detect the target's position in FOV.

And I have another suggestion - you could also make a description of all ECCM types (not necessarily to have it simulated) for all systems in SAMSIM.
Just to have complete knowledge thumbsup

I can certainly help with Volkhov, Mod-3 onwards! All ECCM features that I have seen mentioned in literature:

SDC
Variable PRF
Frequency vobulation ("skachok" in russian)
GShV in angle channels
Track on leading edge in range, probably coupled with GShV mode.
Diskriminator
Kanal
RD-75 range-only radar.
Karat
Missile channel protection
Home-on-jam (via I-87V/TT)
