milang: the fact your missile exploded 2km far means the only and very simple thing

you have error in target height or distance value

V760-15D is detonated by K3 command and that means this command is sent when the SNR-75 THINKS the missile is at the target's position. And because you are shooting at a jamming target, you do not know its distance precisely :-)

i agree with u alien...but look at my first after action report! my missile explode on 1.4 KM from s-71 is not good yet???
ofcourse i set my altitude and distance manualy ! i belive to my setting ! but i guess one thing we forget !
sr-71 could fly with around 3 mach on air ... so this is not logical sa-2E missile can crack down it in normal situation!

Unfortunatly I only hit the towed Decoy of SEAD Nr 3 in that missions.
As it seems, the towed decoy, altought dead arcodingly to the kill at 02:11, seemed to be able to continue jamming and take another one for the team (4:00).
As I saw in my last second of On Air Time (I switched my radar off at about 04:01) the decoy just keept jamming, and seemed to be ready to take another one. Unfortunatly it wasn't me who could give the decoy the third hit.

in scenario's i mean evry scenario's i play with very easy tactic

i telling u.... first.. swich on your system but do not turn on your antenna and transmiter...
just swich on your system and go to ready missile to launch.. then check your earlier warning radar and IADS... so u have to choose on target to kill... and then set your azimuth and elevation at that marked target... so now.. u can say= let's play

turn on your transmiter and antenna for tracking very quickly and fast...

PS: sa-4 not good for this OAF scenario's.... if ve had sa-6... we have 2 tracking channel together at one moment

so right now ... we have only one system with one tracking channel.. please whatch your move.

Yeah Piston 79, I used the Anti-ARM mode of the SA-4, however it didn't made a huge diffrence. As I launched my missile, the radar transmitted continusly, after I have observed that my missile arrived at target, I switched the transmittion of anyway.
I just switched it one or two seconds before launching a missile.

Milang, I had my trackingradar off as long as possibile, and let the search radar feed the target information to my tracking radar. As the target seemed to be in range, I switcht my tracking radar on, locked the target, set the distance manually and then fired as fast as I was able to. Once my missile actually passed the target I turnd my tracking radar back off again, so that the launched HARM hopfully hits an IRZ. This way I was able to launch 3 missiles, however whilst firing the 3 one I was to slow to get a valid lock and then as I switched my radar off, it was too late.

Unfortunatly it seems that the decoy is very small, and a 23 meters hit (or miss?

) won't kill it. Altought the AAR reports that the missile killed the decoy, it is still operational....

One hit, two kills, doesn't look to bad for the fact that I have never been able to range the targets as every one of them used jammers, and the burntrough range for F-105 seems to be pretty small, smaller than the missiles optimal range as it seems.
I tracked the targets in epsilon and beta, however I didn't changed the range after the search radar handed it over and the tracking radar slewed to it. That seemed to work pretty well, until the momment, where the planes dived to the ground. At that momment the range boreside just raced to the right of the screen. I tried to manuall reajust with the wheel, back to the point where the range boresight was before the plane descended. Totall guesswork, however for 3 out of 5 missiles it worked out pretty good.

And the Wild Weasels didn't even had the chance to fire a HARM.

EDIT:

I don't have a clue how it works, but it works pretty good!

Note, that AAR didn't include a Total SNR On Air Time, I don't know why it isn't included, however in fact i switched my SNR on once, for a very short time, to check if there is any borntrough, as there wasn't any, I left my SNR off for all 6 missiles fired.
As you see, I got both, the flight (01:56 and 05:07) blocking Zea Lam and the flight (03:32 and 04:22) blocking Noi Bai.

Once I started the whole campain LINEBACKER II, should check my AAR's and put them here...
In first night I received a Shrike before even manage to shot a missile (and I was familiar with the SIM from long time!). In reality they have only one chance, we could analyze our mistakes and fight again...

The reloading from TZM takes about 3 minute... You shouldn't do anything, just wait... (Of course, first should pick a batterie with available TZM's

)

It would be nice if you add your 3DAAR, also... And don't take it so seriouse, learn the manuals, read the old topic (pity that guys by Milang flooded it really much...).

On first look it is not neccesary in those scenarios to switch off the SNR, because IAF didn't use ARM's so much (they attacked from low altitudes, which didn't allowed using of ARM's at their full potential). You could do some history researches about missions you want to participate

. Another, not so important thing is that you didn't use 55 km mode of the SNR (which should provide you better pictures on beta and epsilon screen).

A bad day for F111s facing a Shilka at Tripoli.
Remit-32 (10 hits/160 fired), Remit-33 (4/140), as well as Karma-51 (13/164) are lost.
652 more rounds were fired on two more targets, but no hits scored.
Locks on three more targets but no fire resolution possible (distance too far; tracks not on the screenshot).

A little hint: trailing shots on an outward turning enemy are hopeless, as seen on the screenshot

In the attacks on the last two targets there were both times ~7secs phases where firing was not possible. I assume that's when the planes have little or no speed vector to or away from the Shilka. Afterwards firing is possible again, but as the planes are turning away and the distance is pretty far (>3000m), the bursts never "connect" with the target path...

Four kills and one hit (332 rounds fired against Karma-52 and only one hit - probability is a _bitch_ :-)) in El Dorado canyon. Let's shred them to pieces

I think the first F-111 can not be hit, it is too close and Shilka startup takes some time :-(

We might easily underestimate the ZEUS steam driven SRP, but even today (more than 50 years after its introduction) NATO planes do not fly below 3000m, to avoid the Strela-Shilka pair.

My favorite sam system is the S-300PS/PMU Volhov-M6 (SA-10B)...

You used your SNR as a flashing car index.
Weasels needs some time to lock their HARMs and fire it...

Could you post 3DAAR of this battle?
(And please never forget, that you done this expecting the enemy to come, while at the real battle SNR operators were woken up by the bombing, had one chance in their lifetime, only after hearing that their colleagues at the neighboring site was killed... )

flash car index ? i use this method but when i launch the missiles to target ! i have to keep transmitter ON on air ... so they fire on me after pass seconds ...

Yes, yes i know this is just a simulation, with all intel assets (f.ex knowing how HARM system works) favouring SAM operators, with no risk, no fear, and none of the added complexities of real life jobs, its just ... that i find a bit weird shooting down a hornet with Dvina system...(i guess its just a feeling, nothing technically fundamented

)

Yes, indeed the "flashing car index" stuff after launch is something that appears in the s-75 advanced manual. If you look at the aar, you�ll notice that i launch with snr turned off. I�ll activate it during the missile�s last seconds of flight. This aproach of course has its disadvantages, you can read about them in the manual. This is imo, the main advantage that the s-75 has over the s-125, being able to launch with having snr on (i dont know much about neva, maybe you can do that with it aswell).

Also launching at close ranges, and checking your instruments help.

I think that a thread about SAM tactics would be great, what do you guys think?

There is no plane, that cannot be shot down by SAM...
(except B-2A )

In Desert Storm, several planes (F-14/15/16) were shot down by the SA-2/3 systems.
Over the Balkans, two F-16s, and an F117 was downed by the SA-3/6 (Serbs had no operational SA-2 during the conflict).

F-18's were used to be shot down by the MiG-25PD's so far...

I've known about switching the radar on and off to avoid HARMs for a long time. But is it realistic to do when a missile is in flight?

I thought HARMs could guide against the missile command transmitter.

It also works on the SA-4. Is that also realistic? I manually turn the radar off, and launch missiles. Only blinking the radar on for 0.5 seconds every 3-4 seconds, and turn it on for the last 5 seconds before impact.

It's hard to know what is realistic, and what works only because it's a simulator.

Strongly depends of the SAM crew.
The S-300PS/PMU (SA-10B) is my favorite SAM system, but I would really like to warn anybody of having unrealistically high expectations...

I have some technical questions for Hpasp.

In EDC scenario, the "flasing light" technique

, combined with launchin at short ranges (no more than 15 km) seems to work against Harm equiped Corsairs and Hornets...

In OAF however, f-16cjss can launch at you once you fire a missile,even with transmiter off. (You can check my Dvina OAF b2 raig against Belgrade, f117 down AAR)

So:

1- F-16cjs can launch on me because im emitting RPK signals through the antenna (missile on the air), and they can lock on them right?

If what ive said above is true then:

2. Why can�t Hornets and Corsairs on EDC do the same? (at least on my AARs)

3. Is there a difference between Weasel Hornets and F-16cj in terms of SEAD performance?

4. Is it more difficult for weasels to lock on RPK emitting , SNR off site, than to lock on an SNR on RPK emitting site? If u compare my two OA b-2 raid AARs, first with Dvina, second with Neva , it takes a bit more time for the f-16cj to launch a HARM on me with Dvina.

HARM is basically a software driven missile, heavily depending on its carrier aircraft capabilities.
It has several software modes (with several adjacent range), and some of those could be used by only some of its carrier aircraft.

A dedicated F-16CJ Weasel has much more capability employing HARM than an F/A-18.

I am a bit confused about this tactic and particulary the ANT/EKV switch.... As on "EKV" mode the transmitter is sending the energy not true antena, but to a "absorbing device", thus allows "going in air" to be achieved in just seconds (which is the mainstay in this tactic). Otherwise, switching "Peredatchik" ON is a proccess which takes a bit longer, especially for the first time (because electric lamps are taking some time to warm-up), and that\s why I am confused, as ANT/EKV seems better accomodated to such actions. In other way ANT/EKV is cutting the receiver (in Sam Simulator), which is not logical to me...(I believe it should cut only the transmition, not receiver)... Also, when going to EKV, the missile is lost immideatly (still in some modes RPK is transmitting, so no reason for selfdestruction... Of course, this is strictly my opinion (I am not a profecional), and it is about SA-2...

I did the first mission yesterday and the second one today.

I'm doing one mission per day, and I'm recording video.

When I've completed them all, I'll stick them on YouTube or something. Though I'll have to split the videos in two, since there's a 15 minute limit on YouTube.

Mission 1, I got 10 kills, and didn't die.
Mission 2, I also got 10 kills, and didn't die.

SR-71 tomorrow, which I'll probably miss. I've never been good at that mission.

Imo, it�s not that difficult to achieve 2 digit scores in the first missions of Linebacker II with a bit of practice.

The key point here IMO is that we have too much info about whats going on during the battle since we know what happened, the tactics used and above all, we have played the same Linebacker 2 scenarios over and over again, and since the scenarios are scripted, u can anticipate enemy�s moves very easily without expecting a counter move.

Well, I disagree that I'm doing well because I played the missions many times before.

I think it's more because the bombers are using the wrong type of jammer, and maybe that missiles are too accurate.

But we'll put it to the test shall we? When Hpasp releases the SA-8, I'll only play training missions to learn the system. The first combat mission I do, I'll record and post here.

its not about jammer or somthing else ! i guess they doesnt had 11s switch for attack to jamer targets !
be aware that they used from sa-2C and we used sa-2F

No jamming.

Okay, that's from an SA-3 not an SA-2, but the idea is the same.

Modulated noise jamming makes multiple moving bands of jamming, not a single thick one. That makes it virtually impossible to know exactly the angles to the target.

I�ve been practicing a lot the first lybian scenario with s-125

This is my best result so far (i find this scenario extremely difficult, to achieve some results any given day i have to practice it a lot before getting something, and i find almost impossible to get your snr surviving after some shots).

Same scenario with sa-2e volhov.
Again the same principles as with neva (keeping illuminating-firing-detonation cycle time to a minimum < 10 secs). No "flashing car bug" (as it only works with dvina) was used.

IMO this demonstrates, that we can outscore easily real life performances mainly because after playing thse scripted scenarios 1000 times, you know pretty much everything about what the enemy is doing without effort...

A funny situation
