Ring Running, Stig Style - 06/27/22 03:19 PM

I've been spending a lot of time at the Nurburgring lately, turning laps 'round the Nordschleife in a variety of cars to see how fast they go. This thread will list them all, to show relative pace around this epic course. These lap times are subject to my skills or lack thereof, setup variance, and probably whether my dog was distracting me too. So it's not meant to be a clinical comparison of absolute car capability, but more a reflection of how I get on with the various cars.

Like the Stig segment on Top Gear, I'll slot in each new car as it is run. Maybe we will end up with some surprises!

Edit: Just going to stick with RaceRoom for this exercise to keep the variables to a minimum

Lap times around the Nordschleife 20.83 km configuration. The Green Hell (which is actually not like hell at all, or at least my understanding of it. It's actually quite delightful)

A few observations about some of the cars I've driven for this

The C-class cars (Nissan R90CK and Porsche 962) are very fast, and have so much torque that I turned the engine map down to help control the exits. No TC on these things.

I really like the GT1 class of cars. Fast and handle great. The Nissan GT-R GT1 is probably the biggest surprise, the fastest road car so far. It handles superbly, great balance, so much so that when you do break loose the car snaps to the line. Others keep coming around, but this thing seeks the groove. Saleen S7R and Koenigsegg CCGT are in this class despite lacking the GT1 designation. Awesome cars.

The Formula X-90 class has V-8, V-10 and V-12, but evidently they all put out the same power and weigh the same, so the difference is the way they sound? Odd that they are all equal (according to the specs at the store)

The X-17 is far and away the fastest car around a track in the sim. Not even close. But those C-class cars attained the highest speeds so far in the straights (320kmh). Around the squiggly bits though the X-17 is unmatched.

I don't get on with the prototype cars (P1 and P2 class), and I've yet to post a time. The cockpit view is lousy in these things.

Of all those laps posted so far, the BMW M3 GT2 is probably the worst lap time I've turned. It should probably be at least ten seconds faster. But I just don't get on with it.

The GT3 battle is quite interesting indeed. There are at least two GT3 classes in the sim, with some marked as DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters). Of these, the best lap so far is in the Ferrari 488, which may be down in part to trying harder to get a good one. That lap is several seconds faster than other GT3 cars, but I doubt it's really that much better. My Porsche 911 GT3 lap is surprisingly slow, as this car is tailor-made for the Nordschleife I think. The BMW Z4 and the Audi R8 I drove last night and both are really nice to drive at the Ring.

The Aquila CR1 looks so fast, and when I selected it I thought it was going to put in a top time, but it must have like 150 horsepowers and aside from the Formula Junior it is the slowest car so far. It looks way faster haha. All the GT4 cars are quite docile, and probably farther off the GT3 pace than I suspected they would be. A roughly 40 second gap. It's a long lap of course, but I thought they'd be closer.

Most lap times are set once I run a 'good one'. Usually three laps. First lap is shaky on colder tires/brakes and as I get accustomed to the car's characteristics. Second lap is better, but probably has some mistakes in it. Third lap is usually a good one. I just keep going until I feel I ran a competitive lap with few or no mistakes on warm rubber. Over nearly 21km that allows for quite a bit of variance. But I think the results are interesting. Some cars I just get on with better than others.

OK. So you've thrown down the challenge, I get it.

I see that it is VR capable, and its free you say?

OK. I'll be back. I might be some time....

I said RR was free, and it is, but most of the content is not. In the spring there was a sale on the pay content and I just grabbed it all. I really like Race Room, but I like them all, don't I?

This version of the Ring is slightly shorter than what we ran in GPL, there's no loop like the old version.

Yes, the challenge is down haha. Beat that 5:19 smile

I'll have to check the leaderboards as I haven't driven in a few months and see how far I've slipped.

Good luck Mark!

Edit: I'm 110 on the leaderboards with that 5:19

It's installed and I see what you mean about content.

I might have to wait for another promo 'cos the whole box and dice is Euro99, and given I forked out to extend my iRacing sub, and for the Racing Club I joined, and StarCitizen, my gaming budget is a bit thin at present.

(I just might have also spent a few more dollars on an F16 UFC unit and a Stream Deck XL oh and a bit of kit to attach them to my rig, all for the festive season you understand. oops biggrin )

The iRacing Club turned out to be a bit like your recent experience with the SimHQ session. I showed up on time, practiced, qualified, and raced the whole race all by myself. At least I won. Dumb Club.

Yeah, wait for a sale, but you can test drive any car for free. Get the Ring and a few fast cars and have a bash. Then pick up more when and if you're ready.

These cars are free and included in the initial install I think

Formula RaceRoom Junior
134 Judd V8
Aquila CR1 Sports GT
Saleen S7R
Canhard R51
Canhard R52
Cougar C14-1
Cougar C14-2
DMD P20
DMD P21
Mistral M530
Mistral M531

Of that lot, the Mistral M530 was the fastest car for me around the Ring. Actually, I don't even remember some of these in my install, like the Cougar or DMD. What is that? I'll have to fire it back up again. Maybe when you top my times I'll need to.
