Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing

Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/04/17 12:18 AM

A long time ago, I started looking at the UH60 model in EECH, and had a load of thoughts about how to improve it.

One of those thoughts was to create a 3d cockpit based on the real MH60 used by special forces.

So after 6 years, a marriage, and 2 kids, I'm finally able to release my early version of this.

It's flyable from the pilot side. You have a main MFD with all the usual screens. There is also 2 smaller MFDs which show the flight display (which is a work in progress, being taken from the Apache), compass, and system page. The barometric altimeter, radar altimeter (up to 500ft), airspeed, and vertical speed all work (although the scale may need adjusted slightly)

Please try it out - this release is for testing. I've only really flown it in free flight to check that code changes were as expected, and I've not done many hours in it. There are quite a few unfinished things in the cockpit also. The upper console and engine controls are unfinished, and the centre console is as it was for the 1.15.4 release as part of the cockpit improvements work. Also, the cockpit cameras are all in the wrong place, but this is also how it was in 1.15.4, so I'll be correcting those in due course. The pilot control stick is also obviously in the wrong place, but I need to investigate why that is, as it was ok in 1.15.4.

This release is for v1.16.

You can find download instructions for 1.16 on these pages...

http://eechcentral.simhq.com/index.php?title=Installation_guide#installation_procedure

To install the cockpit files (you might want to make a back-up first);
  • Unzip the file somewhere
  • Copy cohokum.exe into the \cohokum folder of your EECH install folder
  • Copy the cohokum\3ddata\objects\mh-60l-cockpit folder into the cohokum\3ddata\objects\ folder
  • Copy the cohokum\graphics\textures\cockpit\uh-60l-cockpit folder into the \cohokum\graphics\textures\cockpit\ folder
  • You might want to delete, or take a backup of, the game.cfg file. It will be regenerated.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_9WsInmSbhuQnQtUUNSalZQNjA/view?usp=sharing

And that should be it.

Please let me know of any issues you find. This is a debug build, so it should create a Debug.log file.

One thing I would like to know about is frame rates. On my ageing laptop, I was getting drops down to 10fps or less at times, but it seemed linked to the environment rather than just the cockpit.

I've also changed the font for the headings on the main screens. I play at a resolution of 1600 x 900, and the font was stretched and unreadable. So I've changed it so that it looks ok at that resolution, but if others could check it.

I've also changed the default resolution from 800 x 600, to 1280 x 900 as I think most PCs these days can handle that resolution.

Enjoy!

p.s. I'll be continuing to work on this in the meantime, so this isn't the final release by any means.

If you download this, would you mind completing the poll? I'd like to get an idea of who's using it.

I've troubles with the exe, something related to 'failed to allocate memory' i'll try to send you the debug log file.

Is that just when you run it? Have you installed 1.15.4?

You might also have a crash.log.

Ill pm you my email.

I've put the link back. It should work OK now, and changed to use Direct Sound instead of OpenAl

I am sorry to say, but I am too busy and lazy to pull up another installation of EECH, as I am using the latest.
However, if you really need feedback, I will do it for you, because I appreciate your work!

I'd really appreciate the feedback. You can actually install 1.15 into a different folder from your current install, and run both versions.

But if it's too much hassle, don't worry about it. It'll get released when it's done, regardless of how much testing has been done.

I'll probably update the download link soon, as I've now added a digital compass, and working on bringing over the flight display from the Apache.

Are you running 1.16 just now?

Yes, I have 1.16,
I hope I will have some time during the weekend for testing...:)

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. Seems like not too many people are bothered about this anymore frown

I think the already small playerbase has all gone away over the last year.

Hi messyhead,

I really would like to test your BlackHawk cockpit even because this is the EECH addon that I'm anticipating the most.

Unfortunately "real life" got in my way recently and I haven't had any chance to test it (or even to play any game for that matter) frown

I can confirm your cockpit does not work in 1.16 but you already knew that. 😁 Your cohokum.exe won't load the rest of the 1.16 install. I tried inserting the cockpit folders just to give it a go but the cockpit does not display - for me anyway.
I am willing to install and try it in 1.15.x but I have deleted all my pre 1.16 EECH versions. Can you direct me to where I can download the appropriate 1.15 version? I have my original Apache and Comanche Hokum CDs. Could you also confirm which Blackhawk version I should be using. Not sure if I'm up to date on that either.
Thanks for your previous works. Hope to use this one.

Sorry to get back so late. Tried 1.15 but keep getting an error message about direct3 missing. Installed 1.16 with no problems. What does 1.15 have that the Blackhawk pit needs that it won't work in 1.16, or is it some file structure problem?

Can you post a screenshot of the error? It doesn't need anything extra to run. But it's using direct sound, so it might be that.

Thanks for giving this a try. The cockpit code isn't in 1.16, so it won't work at all. I'll do a 1.16 version in a while, but I need to convert the textures.

Messyhead

Downloaded and installed 1.15 and all referenced mods and patches from the urls you pointed me to. Runs fine until I copy in your new cohokum.exe, then game crashes. Also when I copied in the uh-60l and ah- 60l cockpit folders there was nothing to overwrite in the objects or textures folders - is there a UH-60 update prior to your cockpit files that would have generated those folders?

Anyway from the end of my Debug.log:

Can you go back to the original exe and run it, and see what version it shows? It should be 1.15.4. Also try going into free flight and see if there is already a blackhawk cockpit

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/16/17 11:27 AM

Actually, I think the error is to do with loading some sounds, so it might be that there's something missing.

Check the version that's installed, and let me know.

The install files and instructions are tricky to find on the forums, so I might have missed something.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/16/17 08:09 PM

MESSYHEAD,

The installed version available from the EECH Central site only takes me to 1.15.2. I looked around for a 1.15.4 update patch but could not find any. Maybe 1.15.4 addresses the sound issue. If you know where I can get 1.15.4 or if you can send, let me know.

Regarding Blackhawk in free flight, I must admit the Blackhawk was never available to me except through campaign, never in free flight. Same goes for 1.16. Does 1.15.4 provide free flight access to the Blackhawk? The Blackhawk in 1.15.2 comes with the cockpit shown in the attached .jpg file link. [BTW a similar one shows up in 1.16 but with lighted functionality].

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.p...bcd6246b3e2e750fe2dfcd59b0f34ad&f=13

I appreciate the time you are giving to help me get this up and running. Hopefully I will be able to give you some feedback for your cockpit work instead of dealing with this installation business. Usually I am a much quicker study but for some reason...

Mechanic.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/17/17 06:56 AM

Sockzien made a cockpit for the Blackhawk, and I've modified that. I'll try reinstalling it and see what makes it 1.15.4. If I've got the file, I'll upload it somewhere.

Did you install the 1.15.2fix5 update?

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/17/17 07:11 AM

Ok, found it. It was released under the cockpits improvement thread, I'm not sure why it wasn't an official release.

If you install ver0.3 from the thread below, it should add the cockpit.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/17/17 06:58 PM

Thanks, that was the final piece [and I had to clean out all old installs, registry items etc and start from scratch- but it was worth it). I now have free flight Blackhawk and your very detailed and brilliant cockpit. See before and after shots below. Close-up graphics are excellent, pull-back pixelates/shimmers a little, and for some reason your cohokum.exe doesn't recognize the Cuba terrain and crashes the game - the other maps I tested (I went from Afognak up to Jordan - will cycle through the others) run fine. Now that I am here what else should I check for?

Wow! It looks great at night! I hadn't actually tried it.

Could you try flying a mission, and targeting with different weapons? I've not changed any of that code, so I'm not sure how well it works. Could you also keep an eye on how the ai helos do missions?

A few hours play testing would be great.

This cockpit has not affected my FPS. Weapons fire fine (see image rocket fire). Weapons counter works, MFD's cycle through various displays, both pilot and copilot.. TV image in MFD works and follows terrain. Wingman seems to fly well (see image). copter Wipers however do not work darkcloud

Hi messyhead,

is it really true that no one is in this community anymore? I hope not! I love EECH AllMods, it's the Falcon BMS for helo fans! There is nothing comparable out there!

Have noticed that there are no more updates since over one year. I hope this mod will not die. I'm running 1.16.1 at the moment. Do you have plans to convert your pit to this version too? It looks so amazing and a flyable Blackhawk would be such an impressive update for 1.16.1.

Or is it really worth running 1.16.1? I had the feeling that 1.15.4 was more stable, but it's too long ago, so maybe I'm wrong.

I think I have all the 1.15.4 stuff somewhere on my HDD's. Have to search for it.

I'm building a home cockpit at the moment, with different HOTAS for many aircraft. Have modeled cyclic for the Apache, the Viper and the Kiowa and a complete collective too. I want to use this with EECH AllMods in my pit. I hope there are some more people which still love this mod. At the moment I'm really busy with the pit, but if it's finished I would like to do what I can to help keeping this mod alive!

Regards Viper

I'm only using 1.15.4 as Sockzien had created a cockpit in that version, so most of the code was already there. I do plan to release it as 1.16.2 for the final release. I might start working on that soon actually, as I need to convert a lot of the texture files to work in 1.16.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/19/17 02:49 PM

Wow, really good news! Glad to hear about a version 1.16.2 with the Blackhawk integrated.

Are there still people who are working on this mod? You mentioned that the already small playerbase has all gone away over the last year and maybe the modders too?

I always played EECH Allmods, but the last year I had so much work with my homepit. Couldn't believe that it has such a small playerbase, cause its such a good sim.

The problem with all sims today is, that the young generation only want's games with a flat learning curve, much eyecandy and a lot firing action. Simulations have it really hard today. Only WWII simulators are still alive, cause there aren't very complex weapon systems in. Just jump in the vehicle and fire!

It's hard to tell the playerbase, as they're not all active on the forums. I know that thealx has been away for a while, and he mentioned that was going to happen. I've also PM'd Firebird a few times, and not had a response, and they were the main modders.

There were a few others that were doing some new textures, but once they released those, they've not done much else. I think I'm the only active one at the moment. But I find that modders come and go on this game, which is what happened with me for the last few years.

Hi messyhead,

that's no real good news. Sad that no one is interested in this sim at the moment. Really hope it could survive a few years more. I couldn't help very much in case of modeling, cause I'm a bloody beginner in doing 3D. Will spent more time with this if my pit is finished, but this won't be until end of this year.

I hope some more people found an interest in this sim. If you look at Falcon BMS, there are so many people which work on it. What could EECH be if some more modders work on it!?

There aren't many good combat simulations out there today and every year more and more projects die. Hope EECH Allmods will not go this way. It's the only real combat helo sim at the moment and it has made so much advance since its beginning.

Viper-Helicopters are harder, and always been less popular than airplanes.
This is probably the only explanation that bms has hundreds of modders.
thealx during the year improved About the light years eech.Great pity it's over frown You can think what would a dozen people do.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/19/17 04:06 PM

Never understood why most people always prefer jets. Helo combat is so much interesting and the flight model is much more fun to handle.

As far as I'm concerned, I like all complex combat games and never was able to prefer one genre. I also like naval sims like Dangerous Waters or tank sims like SBPro PE.
But I only like real simulations, no action-sims and they are really hard to find those days. In 1995 to 2000 so much sims came out (Jane's series etc.), I sometimes dream of what could have been, if they had the possibilities of todays computer and graphics. Sad that no one has the interest in real simulations anymore, but that's the "cellphone and tablet" age.

I might need to pick it apart then, as I wanted to use some of it in my cockpit. I want to use the Flight display, Compass and possible ADF, and Engine page from the Apache, and I was also looking at the terrain radar mode to use it on the radar display in my cockpit.

I had noticed the large drops in FPS.

I think I'll abandon the 1.15.4 version, and start to migrate my cockpit into 1.16.2 instead, as I'll probably be wasting time to get 1.15.4 working fully.

I'm not sure how far the Hind cockpit work had gone, but I won't be able to look at that just now. I think the clickable cockpits needs some work in general, as I find the cursor movement too erratic to use.

I was thinking of contacting the SimHQ folks about putting a piece on the home page about this sim, to try and attract some new players and modders. Maybe once my cockpit is in a more finished state, I'll see if they can do an article on it, and this sim that refuses to be shot down.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/19/17 04:40 PM

@blackshark

Yes, helisims are very rare. Had so much hope back those days "Whirlwind Vietnam" came out ( I love the good old huey ) but saddly it was never really finished and buggy as hell.

I'm no fan of the DCS series, cause I don't like their game philosophy very much. All the modules have no real timeline, so what to choose to fly together respectively against? A Blackshark vs. a Huey? And what should all those WWII stuff be good for? There are thousands of WWII flight sims out there, so why use DCS for this?

Sadly only DCS and Steel Beast Pro are the last combat sims which are still in development. Thirdwire's Strike Fighters 2 series is also on hold. He makes rather cellphone %&!? . Not much to choose from those days!

I'm pretty sure that if you wrote such an article, that it would be welcomed.

I'll add it to my to do list. I'm not much of a writer though 😄

Had mentioned the sim in the BMS forum a while ago (was at the time 4.33 was on hold cause of legal rights discussions) and had positive feedback about it. Maybe we could convince some simmer of other games that helos are just as interesting as well!

More gamer --> more modder biggrin ! Many simmer didn't know of the existence of EECH Allmods.

Might be also interesting for tank simmers to see the other side of the battlefield copter .

Messyhead you are a homecockpit builder too? Do you have pics of the pit? Helo cockpits are very rare. I build a universal pit in which I could fly combat helos and fighters.

Oh man duh sorry you mean the Blackhawk pit! It's not good to do multitasking ( writing in a forum while soldering biggrin )

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/19/17 09:43 PM

I've just had a play with the 1.16.1 game, and it's soo much nicer than 1.15.4. Much faster and smoother, so I'll work on converting my model for that version. Also, there's an external model mod that another forum member created, and it's a really nice looking model. Especially the rotor head, so that's going to be my focus.

If anyone is playing it in 1.15.4 and finds an issue, still let me know.

I've downloaded the Blackhawk one and it has ees files as well as the lwo/lws. I've got it working in game. There is some issues with the surfaces, as they don't all have smoothing enabled, but the textures are really good.

I might try and include all his updated models in a future update as it's a shame they're not available as part of the main game.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/25/17 08:49 AM

Looking so much forward to 1.16.2. I've extra built Apache, Kiowa, Viper Cyclics and a universal collective for use with EECH Allmods. I love this sim so much.

Is there any chance that it will be possible in future, that you could choose the keyboard assignment in the game itself, or is there any other way to align it?

Eventual in the eech.ini or so? I didn't remeber if it was possible cause its a while since I had the time for flying EECH. At the moment I'm busy with my homepit and haven't installed EECH, so that I could look if you could config it via ini-file.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/25/17 09:53 AM

I'm in code merge hell at the moment, trying to bring my changes into the 1.16 code base.

I can see how the keys are assigned, but not sure how much it would be to make them user assignable. I think there was some work started on this.

Once I've done my project, I'll probably be quite familiar with the code, so I could look at a few other things.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/25/17 03:35 PM

Viper-There are several programs for changing keystrokes. For me the best is xpadder.

messyhead-great that you're still in eech.If possible add new symbology flir/targetting or pnvs symbology for apache from arneh avionics.
Nothing more, no clickable keys and all the rest.It would surely have pleased all lovers of apache, and many would return.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/28/17 02:29 PM

Hello blackshark,

yes I own some of those progs. But there is a little problem. If the game itself uses the button and you don't have the ability to change or deactivate this in an ingame-setting, you get two functions at the button. The one the game uses for the standard DirectX button and the keystroke emulation you programmed with a program like xpadder or pinnacle game profiler or something else.

The method you mentioned is only good for buttons on your stick, which the game doesn't recognize, cause it only uses 4 DirectX buttons and not more. But if you want to have other functions at those buttons as the one the game imposes you, then you out of luck!

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/28/17 02:59 PM

A question for those of you that have tried this pit...

What do you think about the pilot models?

Personally, I don't like them. The animations don't match up to anything in the cockpit, as they were taken from another cockpit, and I also think they look quite low quality.

I'd like to hear opinions.

I'm thinking of removing them and replacing them with higher quality models (probably static initially), or just not have a pilot model.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 04/29/17 09:55 AM

They're looks good for me, maybe you can replace their helmet but if you want completely replace pilots for me no problem.

Could you add it to the 1.16 bug thread? I don't want this thread to get filled with general 1.16 issues.

I can't say that they will be solved, as I'll not be looking at that code. My priority is getting the cockpit working, then see after that what else can be done.

I like flying with the pilot and co-pilot representations, especially with the accompanying animations. I wouldn't turn my nose up at the better graphical treatment you could no doubt bring to the table but not a priority for me.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 05/02/17 03:10 PM

Hello messyhead,

nice to see that someone is still working at the mod. Hope it will never die cause there aren't much combat helosims out there! That's why I built the helo-part of my pit mostly for EECH-Allmods 1.16.1 ( or in future 1.16.2 biggrin ) exclusive (the HOTAS section).

And here the problem begins. I don't want to shove you, but I need some information. EECH Allmods is the only one of my simulations (Falcon BMS 4.33.3, DCS 2.0, Strike Fighters Project 2 and maybe ARMA2&3) I absolutely want to use my pit with, which isn't able to do a free ingame configuration of keys and joystick axis. The keys aren't are real problem, cause most of the pit is fully programmable, but the axis are a problem.

I want to use some of my dials on my selfbuilt Helo-HOTAS for e.g. EO Zoom or PAN or some other stuff in the sim. I know you could use some axis for this, but at the moment not all is really useable or configurable, as you know. So I have to exclusively make those dials programmable with keyboard emulation, the way Thrustmaster did it with their antenna knobs on the old FLCS & TQS, the HOTAS Cougar or as far as I know also on some pots at the Warthog. This means I have to completely built very complex electronics to be able to do this, or leave a lot of functions real attack-helos have on the HOTAS, away.

In most of the other sims you could asign a simple analog axis to such compareable functions like EO zoom and PAN or Scan Size etc. Is there any chance that we will see a configurable ingame setting anywhere in future which allows to configure axis functions freely? What I really mean is, is it even possible with the code of the original EECH?

I don't want to make the pit more complex as it already is, or I should say I would like to make it a bit simpler just using only available stuff you could buy instead of building electronics by my own. Sadly there is only one company which makes something compareable like the digital programmable pots of the TM gear, and they only sell their really expensive parts in the USA, which makes it even a bit more expensive for people in Europe.

I already thought about buying a used Cougar or Warthog to cannibalize it and use it's entrails for my Cockpit biggrin , but doing so with a 500$ HOTAS isn't a very clever solution and the other way around the board you could buy in the USA is even cheaper. At the moment I try to convert my old stuff (FLCS&TQS), of which I have a bunch, to use it with my pit for being compatible with older simulations like EECH. Drawback is that it is really complex to get those old electronics running on modern computers and you have always to dualboot with a plain DOS to program them. Not a very smart solution, but the only one at the moment for me, if I still would be able to program pots in a digital mode for use with older sims.

I could renounce to play some of my old sims like Janes Longbow 2 etc. in my pit, but clearly never EECH Allmods! The other side is, as things stay at the moment, my pit isn't finished the next two years, so if there is a possibility that EECH Allmods 1.16.3 or 1.16.4 biggrin ( seen from the code side - not if some is willing to do it just now ) will have the ability to configure your controllers a bit more comfortable, there is no need to built such a electronics nightmare!

I'll be honest, beyond getting my cockpit working in the game, I can't guarantee what else I'll be able to modify. I'm not a programmer - well not in C anyway. Java I know a little bit, but that's for making web apps.

I can make a list of things that I'd like to fix/update/add, but not sure how much of it I could do. Working on getting my cockpit merged into 1.16 from 1.15.4 has shown me that there is a lot of the game code that I don't know about. So it would be a lot of exploratory experiments, and see how it goes.

Re: Blackhawk Cockpit - initial release for testing - 05/04/17 04:06 PM

Hello messyhead,

thanx for your reply! O.k. I understand. I'm also no programmer, thats's why I sometimes have to ask some stupid questions biggrin .

At the moment I try to get my HOTAS and pit running with the use of evilC's UCR (Universal Control Remapper) the successor of UJR (Universal Joystick Remapper).
This is an excellent piece of software, also still some functions missing. Could be a real alternative in future for user which couldn't spent hundreds of dollars for a HOTAS like the Thrustmaster Warthog. One of the main advantages of those expensive HOTAS, besides their finishing, was always a good configuration software like TARGET.

With UCR it is possible to configure keystrokes to joystick axis and buttons. Very interesting tool for EECH Allmods pilots. Hope some new functions will be implemented. I've contacted the programmer about some usefull features and hope he will include some of them in an update, maybe. It's still in an very early stage.

Hello messyhead,

thanks a lot for your work on the blackhawkpit. Couldn't test it at the moment, cause I'm still busy with my homepit getting all the instruments working in all the simulations I want to use.

Is it possible somewhere in future, that we will see a 1.16.2 or a 1.16.1 Fix2 with your blackhawk cockpit and rapotas great new models already included?

Cheers Viper

I was thinking of including Rapota's models in a future release, but I think some of the LOD models for them need some work.

I saw in you cockpit Unacceptable texture size. For example 33x33 112x111 200x200,
From what I know eech Allowed only " equal" resolution ie 128 x 64 256x1024 128x32.Others can cause ctd even.
So much from me, cockpit first class, masterful work smile

All the textures need revisited before the final release. Are you saying you're getting a ctd because of the textures?

Yeah, I'm not sure why this is happening. I mentioned it on the notes on page 1 of the thread. It didn't happen when I did the 1.15.2 version, but is happening in the 1.16 version.

I've had a summer off from doing any work on this, so I'll hopefully start looking at it in the next few weeks.

O.k. than it's a known problem with the version. I thought it maybe has to do with the sh... system I only have available at the moment for testing. Only Intel graphics card cuss2

Yes in 1.15.4 Clickable Cockpits mod it's running o.k. at my laptop also.

The UH cockpit old version was nice and functional. Simple and modern. Seems like with some widening and a fifth middle, fixed MFD set to engines it could easily be adapted to Chinook, too.

Hi Messyhead,

Thanks for all your work on the Blackhawk.

I just tried it on 1.16.0 and when I got to the "Generating Campaign" screen it hangs. If I "ALT TAB" back to the desktop there is the following error message:

ASSERT object> OBJECT_3D_INVALID_OBJECT_INDEX

(d:\workspace\eech-dev-master\aphavoc\source\entity\special\regen\regen.c:219)

Does any of that make sense to you ?

Cheers,

Andy

PS I did go through the previous post but couldn't see anything like that.

Out of interest I tried downloading and installing 1.16.1 Allmods, but I got just the same error.

Ok. The first post was from 2017, and I've made quite a few changes since then anyway, so it's possible that it just doesn't work from the download.
