Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 12:54 PM

Started playing last night, big battle multiplayer only. Enjoyng the large maps in big battle with lots of vehicles. Much better than halo 3. Ordnance drops are a nice feature,
think of MW's care package system with three options to choose from and no waiting for the chopper to arrive.
The only thing I really do not like is the controller layout options, but Halo's options have always been that way. Took me a while to find one I liked and I am still not comfortable.

I forgot I pre-ordered this back in Feb. I didn't do any MP yet, I'm not that crazy about it in this game. I like the campaign and nice to see MC back in there. I played the first scene, which was fairly reminiscent of the Pillar of Autumn opening in the first game. They mixed in a good bit of cinematic scenes that look really nice, and the game itself looks pretty good too. Not ground breaking at all, but a good looking game. Some new alien weapons (at least to me, I skipped the non-MC games). Otherwise it's pretty standard Halo. More challenging than some before and so far watching your ammo is a bigger factor than I've seen before.
I'll give MP a shot later, but I don't care for the fast paced gameplay and respawn games.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 01:18 PM

ya, but reviews were giving it high scores before it was ever even out... it just came out 2 days ago, ok 1 week for some who may of gotten it early... can you really trust reviews yet... that said i hope it is all you guys want in a game, but space and sci fi is not my thing, so no interest here.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 01:42 PM

I love some good scifi, and there's a decent story in Halo. Even read the initial 3 books. The first was pretty good and there's a good bit of that story built into this game so far. Looks like they're going to flesh out the origin story for those that don't know it. IMO it would make a good movie if they ran the first book's origin story and through the first game.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 01:48 PM

I'm not a big space and sci-fi person either. Halo is about as far as I go. Picked this up yesterday and have played the first 2-3 campaign missions, and no multiplayer so far.

First impressions:

1. This game frustrates me more than any other Halo except maybe ODST. Keep running out of ammo and getting killed. On freakin' NORMAL difficulty. I don't think I'm even going to bother with the higher difficulties this time around. Maybe they just designed the campaign for coop play?

2. My hands hurt after about 30 minutes of playing this. I don't know why, it doesn't happen with other games. Except for Bad Company when I would play as a sniper and get "sniper claw". (where my left trigger finger would get so tired from constantly being pulled, that it would feel like a gnarled claw)

3. I HATE the weapons. It feels like killing enemies with water guns. Seems to take a whole magazine to kill one enemy a lot of times. Seems like I miss way more often than in previous Halo games as well.

4. I like Master Chief being back, and the new look Cortana. I want to keep playing just to see what happens to her, actually.

5. It's not really drawing me in though. I'm more likely to put Assassin's Creed 3 or Forza Horizon in the Xbox at this point.

Not hugely impressed so far. Really only picked it up after hearing all the good reviews. It's not a bad game, but I may not be the right audience for it.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 01:53 PM

I picked the game up yesterday and spent a few hours with it last night. My previous Halo experiences were the original on PC and then Halo: Reach on 360 -- I missed all the others. So, I'm a bit out of the loop on the story, aside from summaries I've read online. Still though, I'm having fun with it. It occurred to me about two hours in, though, that I'd probably seen all the gameplay variation in those first two hours that I'm going to see for the rest of the game. That's just the Halo strategy: walk in a huge environment, confront groups of bad guys, move onto next environment, repeat. Done well, there's nothing particularly wrong with that formula, but I can't help comparing it to the other three games I'm currently playing: Dishonored, Skyrim and Dark Souls, all of which have a vastly wider amount of gameplay possibilities and skills required. But then again, Halo4 is not trying to compete with any of those games, so, for what it is, it's pretty damn good.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/07/12 04:00 PM

I just bought it for my boys yesterday for their report cards. Was going to hold till Xmas but I'm sure I can find some other games to get from Santa. They love it, I just can't stand the Bunny hopping in MP.

I picked it up yesterday and started the campaign. I'm not a Halo junkie and I don't read the books. I own Halo 3, ODST and Reach. The story in the Halo 4 campaign seems decent for a video game. I'm enjoying it so far. Did not try MP yet.

My son loves it, as he loves the whole Halo series. I still have to finish ODST before I play Reach or H4.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/08/12 04:47 PM

I thought the CGI and virtual acting in the intro movie were pretty good, they seem to have crossed over the "uncanny valley" and started climbing out of it...

Re: HALO 4 - 11/08/12 05:38 PM

the cut scenes are pretty amazing, was watching my 2 boys play the campaign together last night. Funny to hear an 11 & 8 year old describe the game as being "the balls". It's very graphical and my younger boy complained about all the running around giving him a head ache. Will have to see if that happens tonight.

Very impressive with what I've seen so far, they're only an hour in to the campaign

If you've not seen the CGI from Halo Wars I'd highly recommend you do, it's really well done. Infact rather than a live action film I would prefer to see a Halo film done with CGI graphics, as I think you could better recreate the Halo Universe that way.

I like the MP just from a change of perspective aspect. I forgot how addictive the game is.

I've watched my kids play, I really like the new improved look and sound of the weapons. I"ve always enjoyed human weapons despite their at times ineffectiveness, or is that me lol biggrin

Well, I too like the new looks but bringing an assault rifle to the fight in Halo I always feel naked.
Just started with the Halo 4 campaign on heroic and got that feeling confirmed meeting the first Elite! biggrin

Re: HALO 4 - 11/12/12 12:24 AM

I've never wanted to like the Halo series, but the MP is just so good. I have no idea what the story is about, never finished a campaign, but I very much enjoyed Halo 3, and whatever this version of Halo I happen to be playing now.

I'm just saving $ for now, but I'd take it over whatever MOH or COD flavour of the month is out right now.

I find because it doesn't even try to be remotely realistic, the MP has some really creative, fun moments.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/12/12 07:05 PM

played the campaign for about 3 hours on Sat morning, I love some of the new weapons used where you're taking down the beams. Some of the things that attack you look like the Dog transformer that enters the military station in the 2nd Transformer.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/14/12 07:06 PM

Console gamers,

What's the best way to purchase an X-BOX 360 to be able to play HALO 4?

Please don't reply "X-BOX 360, HALO 4 bundle", it's $350!

Have not had a console system since SEGA GENESIS!

TIA

Re: HALO 4 - 11/14/12 08:16 PM

Buy a 360, buy Halo 4.
Just get a 360 with hard drive, which I think is 250GB now, for about $250. Or wait for the sales to start, there's always good package deals then. I wouldn't buy a console for a single game, certainly not that one though. If I were doing it just for one game I'd get a used one somewhere.

$250, comes with Forza 4 and Skyrim (download). Even if you don't want Forza, you can trade it in on Halo.

Re: HALO 4 - 11/14/12 08:55 PM

I would agree with Raw Kryptonite -- I would strongly caution against buying a 360 just for Halo4. I made this same mistake back in 2008 with GTA4. Eventually I found more games I was interested in (I'm 99% a PC gamer) but for the first year or so when I owned it and got tired of GTA4, it really felt like a waste.

Not sure what kind of games you typically play, but my experience with Halo4, and I would imagine that most others would agree, is that the offline campaign features a huge (and incredibly confusing, if you haven't really played the other games) story, gigantic environments, very cool level design, a great variety of weapons ... and an entirely lackluster gameplay experience. The actual gameplay is, in my opinion, completely unimaginative: it's just a standard shooter. Once you've used each weapon and killed one of each kind of bad guy in the first hour or two -- you've already experienced the sum total of the gameplay variations that Halo4 has to offer. After that it's just rinse and repeat, over and over.

Which is not to say that Halo4 is a bad game -- it's certainly not. I very much enjoyed it for what it was. I'm just cautioning you against taking all the hype too seriously. Fun game, yes; but really nothing original.

But if you're determined to get a 360, I also would suggest buying one used. I imagine you could find them pretty cheap these days. It used to be that the units with the larger hard drives were ridiculously more expensive than the lower-end models, but that may have changed. The HD thing is a Microsoft scam anyway -- my unit came with a 20GB drive which I upgraded to an 120GB laptop drive for about $60 two years ago.

Hi, have you tried the 'Fishstick' layout? It gives you a COD layout; i.e. LT does ADS, etc. it took me a while to get the hang of it, but I've now really got into it.
