Civ: Beyond Eath opening turns... - 10/24/14 05:29 PM

I'm a idiot... pre-ordered it 2 days ago before release on a impulse, love the Civ series games but not a sci fi or alien fan... played today for the first time, not for me...boring and insanely deep. And more damn alien creatures then need be. I'm surrounded by them in the opening turns... not a planet I want to call home. wink

But hey, that's just me, you you like the series, aliens, and creatures... might be for you... I regret buying thou.

PCgamer did a pretty good review:

Basically agree with your findings.

I think it's up my alley though smile

How is it from a stablity stand point? Civ 5 had a really rough landing. Took the better part of 6 months to get it where it needed to be.

I started a single player last night when it unlocked. Had no problems. Spent the day and managed to complete a multiplayer game, also had no problems. So it's stable as far as I am concerned.

Were not enough bugs (aliens not software) for me, feral mode next time.

As for the Aliens as long as you leave them alone they tend to leave you be. Didn't stop me purging them from my Island though.

THIS is why I wish we could still sell games on. Some games could be excellent, but just not somebody's cup of tea.

There is now a demo on the steam store page for anyone interested.

600 turns into my second play of this game now.... Kadithan Protectorate, Huge map size, marathon game speed.

No stability issues at all thumbsup

One word of advice..... when you get the tech that allows you to build the terrascape tile improvement, they take an age to build, cost a fortune in energy to upkeep, but produce a lot of resources. Only build them if you've got a big energy income and can sustain it with lots of lucrative trade routes.

Also one cool thing I'm seeing now.... as you progress down the affinity lines (supremacy, harmony or purity) the style of your cities and units (and unit upgrades you have available) changes to reflect your affinity. I'm working on supremacy, so I get lots of futuristic, sleek looking stuff.

Too bad Steam doesn't allow for exchanging game keys with friends. Magnum, I'd happily give you my Wasterlanders 2 key in exchange for your Civilization key.

In my current game, (my second) I'm playing as KP and just founded a city that the game named Mareeba, which just happens to be a small town in Northern Queensland, Australia where I used to work 30 years ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mareeba

I wonder if one of the developers came from there.

Really happy to see they provided a decent functional demo with no time limits, I was planning to wait on buying this until the inevitable holiday sales and patches and DLCs, but I've already played the demo for 2+ hours and am enjoying it, so we'll see if I can hold out.

Kludger,

As others have said (and I can now confirm as well) patches are a non-issue here. There's no show stoppers here like there were with C5. I get the occasional audio bug (leaders audio ques not coming in) and once in a while a units animation hangs, but none of the frustrating CTDs from it's predecessor.

And I'll also say, I agree with PCGs review in that at first it feels like C5 with a new skin, but once you really get going you see it's just kept the good parts, while dropping in some fresh concepts and ideas.

It's different enough to warrant being its own game, but familiar enough to be playable out of the box for anyone who has played C5.

Thanks AggressorBlue and others in this thread, glad to know my concerns about it being in Civ5 initial launch shape are not a reality, will play the demo again a bit and will probably pick it up.

PS I went back to play SMAC and realized I like how the new aliens behave.

Thx, would be great if they allowed it... but hell, I bought Wasteland 2, can't even get that game to start...crashes on start up, need to be refunded. wink
