Dang...airshow cancelled due to rain at Mackinac Island.
Coming in to Banning, CA...follow the valley to Palm Springs International.
Lookout!!! Behind you!!!
Here's a castle near the Salzburg airport.
...and here's some big hangars at Mountain View, CA
Innsbruck, Austria
Vegas, of course...
Hawaii
Right after I took this shot the baggage carts drove away, the cargo doors closed and the Orbit was pushed back and proceeded to takeoff. I don't think I ever saw that in FS9.

Oil rig mission...these landings are real nail-biters, especially when I'm flying!
In FSEconomy I had a 2 Pax job from KUIL to S16, which FSE measured as a small airport (FSE works with the FS9 database of airports, the size of an airport is measured through the length of the runways, which at times ends in strange results), then I had 5 PAXs from S16 to KBFI.
On the first leg, ATC led me past S16 and then, nothing. So I cancelled IFR and turned around. At the position of S16, nothing, a beach. I did several passes (fuel was getting low already) and finally found a curved strip on the beach. Full flaps and the slowest possible approach. Phew! Definately not an airport, but a bloody strip on the beach, scenery is ORBX.
My PC12 at the gate at EDXW (Westerland) on Sylt, the German island of the Rich
At EDHK Kiel Holtenau, my "home", as it is only 25 km from here
Just landed at EDDT Berlin Tegel in my Jetstream
Taxi to the gates
After a short stay, ready to take off back to EDDK Köln-Bonn. It is a warm evening and I opened the throttle a little to fast, EGT is critical, thankfully no damage to the engines.
Heligoland, the only German Highseas island, in the background Düne (Dune), where the small airport is located. It`s also called "Fusel-Felsen (roughly translated to booze-rock) `cause you still can buy duty-free alcohol ans such. That`s why several small passenger-ships are going there every day. Heligoland was used as a practice-target by the RAF after WWII btw. and finally the Brits tried o totally blow the island up, as it was regarded as a military threat. It is said one of the strongest non-nuclear explosions happened there.
Düne with the "airport"
btw. the scenery is part of one 20 % sale of Aerosoft running this weekend.
I purchased ORBX CRM a few weeks ago and again, I`m very pleased, I love their stuff.
Currently I`m transferring a C-130 from Aussie to Europe in FSEconomy and having reached the Middle East, I was a little bored flying over endless deserts (however, flying over the Himalaya was impressive even without addons, really the roof of the world, flying at FL240 and seeing mountain tops pass only a few hundred ft. below was thrilling, THX for good weather). So I decided to pick up my Piper Cheyenne I I have based in ORBX land for a ride, KBFI -> S62. There is the Silverwood Amusement Park. 2 x 2 PAX, around 2900 v$, not bad.
Flying obviously over agricultural used land
Into the mountains, notice the nice weather front ahead (REX2 OD)
On final. Thankfully the bad weather stayed to the right as no ILS was available.
I love these ORBX guys, there really was a Rollercoaster and stuff at the airport. Great!
What I noticed with ORBX however, their stuff seems to be a out of scale, or my DA Piper, it`s way to huge compared to cars, hangars etc.
Yeah what DaveSHQ said, their Hawaii airports are top notch, plus they have a special where if you buy 2 or 3 sceneries at the same time there's a huge discount.
Nice screens! Looks like you have been busy, like I used to fly FS2004 for millions of miles...all over the place. I'd invent a new scenario, each flight was a different airline, different cargo...some really routine, some very far from routine!
I asure you it was by accident! I looked over to the right and there was a little moth. Though I do now have the latest FSrecorder to try and get some actual formation and multi-aircraft shots
Freeware scenery: Island of Kauai, Hawaiian Islands, (Download Link), and the Flying Stations Hawker Sea Fury FBII (click image for full-sized .png image):
You can add 'tracks' or aircraft and offset them. So for two aircraft flying together you just offset the co-ord's and add like a .5 or so time delay so to make them not identical in moving and then you have a great little screenshot.
Thanks for the link, Lewis. Always wanted to take a closer look at the Nimrod. My uncle was a Navy Orion pilot who mentioned often how nice it would be to have a 'modern patrol craft' like the RAF's Nimrod ....
The little Grob Tutor Simshed also has available for FSX looks like a good little bird to fly as well.
This is a FSX screenshot of a P-51D donning Bud Anderson's "Old Crow" 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group paint scheme. It's the A2A Simulations AccuSim P-51D for FSX. Using their paintkit, I added the Old Crow logo, letters, and labels following very closely to some dated photo's of Jack Roush's P-51D Old Crow, now owned by Mr. Jim Hagedorn. A renown WWII pilot has been added (photoshop'd) to the screenshot for an additional effect.
.
Below, this is a comparison between a screenshot (with the pilot inserted afterwards) and a real photo.
MH-6 is by Nemeth and UH-60 is from Virtavia, neither especially exceptional, but the best that I could find. Default Baghdad scenery, some minor tweaking in Picasa.
Before I purchase anything I research what else is out there at the time. Right now the Virtavia Blackhawk is the best one out there. Cera has one in progress.
Good looking bird Plainsman. Question, do you have this Tomcat Easter egg in your Baghdad scenery? I don't remember which ramp or gate that I launched the Little Bird from, but there was a great big old F-14 sitting next to me. The D Boys didn't mind, but I wonder how it got there?
Nice shots, but might I suggest the ENB series mod for better dynamic lighting/shadows, and changing to a blue-er sky than the REX midwest storm theme?

ENB coverts DX8 and 9, no converter for DX10 and 11, right? I only use FSX with DX10 preview checked. Not interested in going backwards with DX, but thanks for the recommendation. Also, I didn't use REX in those shots. Stock sky.

I think AggressorBLUE is onto something about your sky textures. Here is my stock sky:
Is it possible you installed some 3rd party textures at some point and forgot about them? Or maybe dropped some in by accident? I had some 3rd party textures I tried once that were really horrible, but I didn't realize it until I started comparing my screenshots with others'.

I do believe it's limited to DX9,but IMHO, for FSX DX9+ENB> DX10 Preview without ENB. Given that the ENB mod is free, it can't hurt to give it a shot
First up is the SunSky Jet *FREEWARE* KHPL. Easily up to par with an Aerosoft airport, made all the better by my recent purchase of MyTraffic X Pro
I also picked up a few Virtavia goodies, which are 50% off. Shown are the T-34c, which has one of the best VC's I've ever seen in FSX, easily on par with Carenado work. Also the Tu-22 Blinder, which is very challenging and fun to fly. I still haven't had a chance to try out the Seaking I also purchased, but that's next
Quick suggestion guys. Please post the name of the addon when posting aircraft images. I have seen so many planes that I would love to have but haven't had luck finding them.
Great shots of the B55 kludger. The Dreamfleet B58 was one of my all time favs for FS9, along with the Aeroworx B200. Too bad neither were ported or developed for FSX. Looking at the RealAir Turbine Duke right now. Very tempting.
Thanks, I'd have to say the RA TurbineDuke is still my favorite twin over the Milviz B55 and Carenado C90, but it is close and I fly all 3 regularly (along with the C310r which is great too), the TDuke just has so much more oomph and reverse thrust so you can drop it into smaller airfields than the other two and I love the acceleration and flexibility of it. Also the TDuke has a slightly better framerate than the B55.
The only thing I'd dock the TDuke points on is the external looks, compared to the beautiful B55 and C90, the TDuke just seems all pointy shapes to me, but that is just a personal preference with the real life airplane not the FSX version which is awesome, I'll post a couple of pictures of all 4 of my favorite twins here just to keep us on topic:
RealAir TurbineDuke + Orbx PNW and KVBS Skagit + REX 2
Milviz C310R + Orbx PNW and 3W5 Concrete + REX 2
Carenado C90 + Orbx PNW and S43 Harvey + REX 2
All 4 of these are awesome planes, if I had to pick just one it would be the TDuke, but thankfully I don't have to pick and fly all 4 regularly.
If they keep Bernt Stolle doing the FDE for it (and they spend a bit more time polishing it than they did their last couple of planes) it should be a great plane destined to have a home in my virtual hangar
I would add some of my own, but I took tens of thousands over the last few years and then spent days whittling them down to my favourites, which turned out to be around 10,000 pics and it would be impossible to decide which ones to post
I'll see if I can find some really really nice ones, though
(disappears into 'pics' folder, never to be seen again....)

Who the hell needs MS Flight, when you can have all this goodies!!! Ah... right... Flight is gone.
Yeah I actually fly Flight from time to time, when I'm on the phone on hold and just need something to waste some time with without needing a flight stick, and while default Flight looks better than default FSX, nowadays FSX+add-ons looks amazing, especially for a VFR flyer like me.
PS. Nice shots everyone! This is one of my favorite threads.
I like the DX10 shader effects, but too much sky reflection hides the great ORBX water textures.
Interesting....
IDK, I think a cross-comparison between DX9+ ENB versus DX10 preview would tell the real story as far as lighting.
While ENB and DX10 change the appearance in two very different ways, I've found that I like the overall effect of DX10 vs ENB. Just gotta get this water shader thing figured out.
How do you control the throttle in your condition....? Or the plane for that matter?
Nice landing on the third try. You're able to use the plane again
I used the keyboard default F1-F4. It really is a pita because my left hand is curled up, so pushing keyboard buttons is a no go. So I use my right hand, which requires me to let go of the track-ball. I could have nailed that first approach, but I went to lower the gear throwing me of gaurd. That recovery was something trying to find the center axis point...lol
Nice OV-1 Mohawk shot, Piglet did a great job with it, special place in my hangar since I worked on OV1's when in the Army... MOHAWK!
You might know some of the same guys I do;) Guy I work with now used to fly them and had a couple of WO friends who went fixed wing and ended up flying them.
As an old AH-1 and UH1H pilot, I always thought it was a waste of two perfectly good engines

Ah indeed Snake_Pliskinn, I would bet so too, believe it or not I came to that Mohawk unit from a helicopter maintenance unit in Germany, before then I never even knew the Army had fixed wing aircraft, and those Mohawk WOs/pilots were even more quirky than you rotary wing pilots hehe.
Sorry about the link curfuffle.... it's probably one of those situations where you have to be registered and logged-in for the link to work correctly. It's worth the registration and login however... SOH has a lot of well made native FSX free-ware available.
Outside Vancouver I put a carrier in the water, then as I made my approach the carrier started rocking violently...I aborted and went around for a second try and saw this...
Ah yes, didn't you read the NOTAM? The Canadians put speed bumps in the harbour because they became quite annoyed with carriers going over the speed limit all the time.
How did that Mustang fly to England all the way from Iwo Jima!? I know they were long ranged, but...wow! Only kidding. Really, that scenery is just beautiful. I don't know how I can not get that.
FSX, using Orbx England, REXE Plus + Overdrive, OpusFSX and Carenado's Cessna CT182T Skylane ... (shh, I haven't told the wife about that one yet)

Approaching Carlisle airport from the south.
At Carlisle airport. Nicely rendered with a very busy feel about it.
Yes FSX. Golden Age Simulations is developing several 1930's racing planes plus the 1931 Cleveland air race scenery for FSX. I do paint for them and this is two versions so far. Online vintage 1930's racing is also planned.
I like the way the pilot appears to be looking at the camera plane in this shot. By the way. Nice Sabre picture. A beautiful model of one of my favorite airplanes of all time. Maybe they'll do the Dog Sabres, too, if this one sells well...and I'm sure it has.
Bought my first tubeliner, Captain Sim Boeing 767. Just finished my first flight, and I like it. Quite a change from C172, P-51 and Piper Cub I usually fly, but I like it.
It's interesting that the Civ forum is pretty quiet (compared to other sections of the site) but this is easily one of the most active screenie threads.
Cool bronco paintjob, didn't know they used broncos for that.
That may be a bit of creative license on my part...
I know the California Dept of Forestry uses them for forest fire spotting in the summer, so I am just guessing they do it for avalanche spotting too in the winter
I signed in just to say: Is that the VRS hornet and is that a default livery? I've never been a fan of fastmovers in FSX but I may seriously have to reconsider. That screencap is BEAST!!!! Thanks for sharing.

Not to drift OT, but one of the Cal Fire Broncos and 2 of the S2 Trackers hang out near by in Hollister during the summer. Here is a shot from Google Maps.
They were leaving the airport when I was arriving for my first solo XC flight. It made me feel like a "big boy" to be talking on the radio with them.
Growing up in Central CA, I was very used to the sight of large clouds of smoke, followed by an OV-10, followed by P2V's and C-130's every summer.
For those of you interested in SweetFX, this is an unprocessed screenshot. All of my other screens in this thread have been sharpened and color corrected. This one is not.
Another unprocessed screen:
Clouds are definitely brighter and more realistic looking:
Had to post-process this one to see how it looked:
Here's a combination of freebie photo-real scenery* and a payware aircraft. Ladies and gents, I present the OzX photo-real Grand Canyon scenery and the Lionheart Creations Piper Pacer.
Click an image to open the full-sized .png image a new window/tab:

* : I don't often use "photo-real" scenery as it usually looks like a photo pasted on top of a land-class mesh... not very pretty at all. That's one reason I like the OzX and Orbx sceneries, they combine accurate land-class mesh with a nice combination of generated scenery bits and associated details cleverly placed to closely replicate real areas. OzX and Orbx provide a superb approximation of real life that is second to none.
Man nice ones Security_Device and Scylla, you guys are going to make me re-install the Superbug and TacPac, which I own but rarely fly since I prefer GA planes...
It's freeware, and possibly not very accurate (I had no trouble over-speeding the thing while climbing, spent most of the flight at about 20% throttle), but it was fun for a short-ish IFR flight from Seattle to San Francisco. I wound up stooging around outside SFO for quite a while, trying to figure out the ILS system. I never did get it right, and eventually just VFR'd my way to the correct runway (19L.) The A380 is a freakin' monster though, it's HUGE.
Here are some pics from today's journey. Click any one of the .jpg thumnails to open the full-sized 1680x1050 .png file screen-shot in a new tab.
+1 Thanks Scylla, will be checking that out seems much easier than using FSRecorder to playback a replay as AI to fly with (good option but this util will be easier I suspect)
It has it's limitations (5000 ft) and the AI only fly in a straight line, or in a geometric shape, so they don't land, but I'm hoping a newer release might add some more features.
I agree, but it's not nearly as ugly as that X-32 was. The 32 could have accelerated the UAV program by decades because I don't think any self-respecting naval aviator would fly it.

@ Scylla: Where did you find the F8U Crusader shown in a couple of the formation images above? I've always had a 'thing' for the Crusader. It speaks to me...
Thanks for the head's-up on the FSGenesis sale, AgressorBlue.

tip: I prefer to search Simviation via google; I type "FSX [Aicraft Scylla just showed off in the screen thread] Simviation" in and it usually pops up.
Seeing as we seem to be on a military aircraft theme at the moment, one of my favourite FSX mounts, the SkySim Hawk T1 after a 5:30AM take off from Chivenor. This sim just seems to be getting better and better.
Kludger, what winter scenery are you using there? thats the best I've seen fsx look....
Thanks Python I've been enjoying flying in the snow this time of year, that's ORBX PNW + ORBX KBVS Anacortes (and the sky is OpusFSX Weather + REX Clouds)
Nice Airbus! It does have very graceful lines. But, for me, they never built 'em prettier than the 747. Maybe, like the Titanic or Queen Mary, it just speaks of a day when air travel was different and getting there truly was half the fun! ;-)
Thanks for the heads up on the Kingair! I wish I could find one in my old squadron colors.
Uploaded with ImageShack.usgeShack.usimageshack.us]ImageShack.us With all of the payware that I have, the default Beaver is still one of my favorite airplanes in FSX. I think it's the best one they did. And the cabin is worthy of Carenado, in my opinion.
Yes, Aerosoft's DHC6 Twin Otter. One of the best payware ships in my hangar (IMHO of course.) I am anxiously, but patiently, awaiting the release of their Twin Otter X Extended... Same ship, but done to today's high-fidelity standards.
I find myself flying the current Twin Otter quite often. It is suitable for just about any destination... Tooling around the north woods, or island hopping in the Caribbean. And everywhere in between.
Thanks Security_Device, FSX just gets better and better each year.

OpusFSX provides just the weather engine (works with whichever textures are installed) but it's weather engine is really good at depicting realistic weather, especially overcast, fog and rainy conditions (it includes a camera control feature too but I don't use it since I already have EZDOK).
So I use the REX textures + OpusFSX weather engine for an awesome combo.
OpusFSX has a demo for it if you want to see what it looks like, I did a bunch of tests starting FSX with REX weather engine at a local airport, then comparing that weather to what I see outside, then closing REX Weather engine and starting OpusFSX to inject it's weather and compared, for me especially here in the cloudy PNW, Opus is amazing, you can see it doing it's magic in those screenshots.
Haven't posted recently as I've been busy with my new TrackIR (my 2 second review: Believe the hype!) and DCS. Just tried FSX with TIR today, and frankly, it feels like a brand new sim!
Decided to play around in AK, as PA is too warm for this time of year
Shooting a less than perfect T&G into ATU...
Freeware apperication! Tim Conrads evergreen PC-7, and the recently released PASY scenery at Simviation. I jumped at PASY because for years it's been my default flight go-to in leu of Megis closing down. Reason being that it's out in the middle of the ocean, so it's easy on the frames as I'm getting the hang of a new bird. It's also a short hop to ATU, with a runway that's about 90 degrees perpendicular to it's own, so it's your pick of which cross-wind to play in. Trust me when I tell you this is a MASSIVE upgrade from the stock scenery, although it does appear I need to tweak the Mesh a bit...
Nice shots AggressorBlue, congrats on the TIR buy, welcome to the cult
I would never fly FSX without TIR and EZDok it's so natural that I'm lost without it.
Another nice afternoon flight around ORBX PNW near Portland and OpusFSX+REX weather with my Carenado SR22 (added a Shockwave 3D landing light last night), flying in dramatic clouds and low vis like this almost makes our winter time weather look fun:
I spent a year on Shemya with the Army Security Agency, spying on the ole Russkies. I don't think we had snow that whole year. Fog 29 days out of 30, though.

Looks good to me too Security_Device, I rarely venture outside ORBX scenery and forget that default scenery can look great too, so I always appreciate good screenies from default too which is why I love this FSX thread, and I'm sure the framerate is much better for flying there

The SR22 has similar framerate to the other Carenado planes with glass cockpit, maybe a bit better than the A36 and C182T but definitely higher than the typical Carenado steam gauge planes like the C337, on my system it gets similar framerate as the RealAir Legacy and Milviz B55 23-30FPS(locked) in the dense Orbx airport areas with full heavy clouds weather above.
So it's definitely a plane that pushes the top end of FSX framerate like the other top payware planes do, not for lower end systems.
Just went to check out the Carenado site, their prices have gone up a bit since I last bought a plane from them. $35 for the SR-22, I only paid $18 for their Cessna Skylane.
Freeware Noratlas from simviation. Cockpit and flight manual are in french though, and every time I go to load the plane engines sputter out and die. Soooo this is about as far as I got....

Don't worry that's normal. French aircrafts tend to just ... give up :P
T-45C over Madagascar. This is a great flying plane and fairly close to the real Goshawk! Nicely done.
Really ? Cause the other day I was wondering how accurate the FM was, seeing how "easily" I was able to land it on the carrier in comparison to the VRS Superbug. Well, since it's a trainer I guess it's normal it handles easier and is more forgiving than the SB.

Well let me qualify that statement. I took off, flew around in it at low level for a tank of gas, and landed it at the field. Bearing in mind that every aircraft I've ever flown in FSX has certain "FSXisms", I thought the T-45 flew well although it was slightly overpowered.
I didn't take the T-45 out to the boat and I've never flown the VRS Superbug, period, so I can't really compare.
I did fly the actual T-45A and flew the F-18C sim to the carrier. Actually, I thought the Hornet was easier to land on the boat since the flight computer dampened out some of the weird tendencies that airplanes have when flying carrier approaches. The T-45 flew like a stick and rudder airplane. The Hornet flew like butter...smooth and silky.
But again, the sim always flies more perfectly than the plane, so I don't know how an actual Hornet flies.
So take all that for what it's worth. I just found myself "believing" the T-45 model when I flew it.
Wouldn't have said it better myself, the T-45 is indeed believable. I really like it, Dino sure did an amazing work.
And yeah, the VRS Superbug really doesn't compare to the FSX F-18. The stock hornet feels a bit like a RC plane, it's so responsive it's almost ridiculous. On the other hand the VRS SB is more...capricious :P
EDIT : Just find out this is also the place for videos.
Uugh...Chino looks horrible. I'm waiting for MegasceneryEarth 2.0 (http://www.megasceneryearth.com/store/cart.php) to get to SoCal. Then maybe we can build a proper Chino and surrounding area.
Or get UTX/Scenery Tech Landclass and then add FTX Global when that comes out. I bet that will look a lot better. It'll cost you $150 though... But I guess that's $150 for all of North America...

I wasn't expecting you to pop into this thread when I asked about Chino. I agree that it looks horrible plus there are too many trees and not enough dairy farms around Chino with the land stripped bare. The lack of any aircraft on the airfield is disappointing too.

Ya I'm sure that will look a lot better, but I have a soft spot for photo-real tiles like in Megascenery. It's not perfect, but when you add some of the bigger cities and good 3rd party airports and landmarks it can be really nice. I never liked the autogen in FSX. One you get about 5K in the air it makes me feel I am flying over some real terrain and can do true VFR. I just wish I had more time for FSX and X-Plane.
I've been tempted to go with Megascenery for California, but I'm a VFR bush flier at heart, so photoscenery usually looks bad at the altitudes I tend to fly (at least based on their Vegas/Reno and Oahu scenery I have), and now that Orbx will be releasing FTX NA Northern California and FTX NA South Alaska this year, Southern California can't be too far behind since I know it will sell a lot of copies.

I'd just wait until the give CA the 2.0 treatment. The Obrbx stuff is great of course, but I don't like flying from that to a region that is not. I kind of like a uniform appearance as I fly from state to state. Both solutions have it's advantages and disadvantages. When the FTX stuff goes global I'll definitely check it out. I just can't help but be intrigued about flying from LA to NY over tiles of the actual USA. To me that is simming.

I think the only reasonable thing to do here is to export the entire FSX scenery library to the RoF engine.
Westland Lysander just became avail at simviation. It has a cool feature, flaps that retract and extend based on the speed of the a/c...all automatic. Takes off and lands on a dime.
This would be the perfect trainer aircraft. Lands about 50 kts, good top speed too, perfect for those clandestine drops into occupied France.
Request: Can anyone with UTX get me some shots of the Waikiki/Diamond Head area on Oahu?
I finally uninstalled Flight and I'm trying to figure out the best combo of addons to get my FSX Oahu looking pretty. Default FSX is missing almost all the beaches. Right now I'm leaning toward UTX with (eventually) FTX Global. I'm not interested in MegaScenery. I like to fly REALLY low!
I got so tired of the horrible, bright blue Pearl Harbor and the lack of any beeches or reefs near Waikiki. UTX adds the beaches, but I could never find anything that fixes the water class used. So, I bit the bullet and learned how to use FSX_KML.
Before and after images below (with UTX and REX present in both):
If you're talking about the FSWC that changes the shaders, yes, I've used it for a while. However, that only changes the appearance of the waves/reflections. It doesn't do anything to change which textures you see in certain places.
Oook, so... Fired up FSX full realism and flew around the bigger of the two stock helos.
Is it SO easy? I mean, yes, I can't yet land EXACTLY where I decide and no, taxiing I don't quite do it. Seems stupid with an helo :P
But that doesn't mean I can't...
My question now is a tough one. If I have to shell for some payware helos, are they ALL going to be so easy?
In all truth I'm doing this to try to instruct myself on Helo behaviour in the wait for DCS Huey... But if it's going to be too different I just give up and wait...
Uploaded with geshack.us]ImageShack.usmageshack.us]ImageShack.us Speaking of freeware, heres a terrific free 757 from Just Flight. I was surprised at how nice the airplane is. And you get two liveries. British Airways and the new Ameriacn scheme. Don't expect Captain Sim or Quality Wings, but it's one of the best free airplanes I've seen. They only ask that you register on the site. Not much to ask, I think. Nice!
Speaking of freeware, heres a terrific free 757 from Just Flight.
I agree, their 757 Freemium is excellent for simpilots such as me to get acquainted with passenger jets. Just enough complexity to keep it interesting while still being manageable. And it comes with a functional FMC.
Came in to post a picture and saw that A2A posted almost the same shot! The hell with it, I'm showing mine anyway. Like I was gonna say...A2A Spitfire, ORBX Wales, and Rex OD. As good as flight simming gets. Yeah, Lewis's picture is better, I like the fog effect. Picked up Wales two days ago to complete my ORBX collection. Beautiful as always.
And I'm going to post this one; not because its a good screenshot, but because it showes something I've never seen happen before or since in FSX. The pushout tractor didn't just push me straight back, he turned me and lined my 737 up with the taxi line. Kinda took me by surprise and I suddenly thought, "I should grab a screenshot of this!" Anybody else have this happen?
Yes Pooch, thats what the push back tractor will do if you leave him to complete his animation cycle. However it can be hit or miss, I see you might be facing the wrong way for example hehe
Yes, Lewis, lol!! I forgot to mention that. I was going to add, "Although he did face me the wrong way!" But I've left them alone and just continued to be pushed back until I stopped the push. They'll push you all the way back into the facing terminal if you don't stop them. When I was with American Airlines the company frowned on that kind of thing. Haven't had it happen since.
This isn't a particularly fantastic screenshot, but I like it because it is simulating something that happens all the time - F/A-18s from Miramar fly over my work all the time, and using the MegaScenery add-on for FSX, I flew an F/A-18 over my building. Where I work is the square-ish building with the courtyard in the middle, directly under the Hornet.
Cool! I like those shots that capture life somehow. Makes a connection.
How is Megascenery for SoCal? I was dissappointed that I lost the seasons on the east coast scenery I bought. But obviously that wouldn't be an issue in Sand dog!

Deacon,
They are currently re-doing all of the Megascenery titles and so far they are marching westward and just released Missouri. CA will get re-done as well. This kind of scenery isn't exciting for some, but I prefer the real tiles. Throw in some detailed airports and cities and REX etc. and it looks great.

I don't know precisely how I feel about the photoreal stuff.
I like the correct placement of familiar landmarks, but I do miss autogen and season appropriate textures. There's just something weird about flying into JFK on a dark snowy day and seeing a verdant green treescape below.
Ya the lack of season textures is a bummer, but it's just impossible to do at this stage. I really wish we could find a way to compress images to be much smaller so we can actually plaster the whole world in real tiles in all seasons and make them available for a reasonable cost.
I just fly my FSX in the Summer time and enjoy the scenery and not think about it too much. A nice break from work duties.

Yeah, I totally understand. It does do what it does very well I think.
FTX Alaska is out!? But I just bought Wales. Okay, take my money....again. I think my wife is starting to feel as though we should have kept our plane and that I was still flying for real. It might have been cheaper.
I have bought it yesterday, but then I did not get past the Tongass Fjord Area. Maybe a Jetranger is to slow for Alaska :-)
EDIT: BTW, I think it is a pitty that it does not fit seamlessly to PF only to the (quite good) extra Add-On Tongass Fjords. But FSX had always been an expensive toy...
Short flight from Exeter to Gatwick. Still getting to know the aircraft and all, and while not as complex as PMDG's stuff, it still has a decent learning curve.
The A-7 has a very strange inertia due to slow power coming on and rapid loss of speed when power is off, so you might get slow so you have to add a lot of power as it doesn't come on very fast, so full power, then it starts to build and shoots you right past your target speed, so you have to slow, and it takes a while to slow, so you reduce all power, then you're back to low speed again...
I need to try landing with the speed brakes out, see if that makes a difference.

It's funny. Personally, landing real airplanes on the carrier is easier I think. Or at least it's difficult for different reasons. Every airplane in FSX feels like it's skating on glass at low power settings and flies like a refrigerator when you put the speed brake out. At least the few carrier jets I flew had great power response in the mid range with the SB extended and most (though not all) flew on speed beautifully when trimmed.
There are a host of other things that made carrier landings difficult, but min maxing the throttle wasn't one of them...at least not since the Panther I think. ;-)
Thanks gents. Just need to point to out that if you've got a rig that can push FSX to it's limits, the sim can be simply stunning.
Still getting used to the Airbus X stuff and performed my first LH route from Cairns to Darwin. Hit some really bad cross-winds and wind shear in the process of landing. Kinda wish I had had Fraps running for that, it was wild. Almost ran off the f#@kin' runway...
I read on another forum that if you max out everything on FSX, it actually runs better. I did that and saw fps in the 45-55 range. This was not an extensive test, however, but you might want to try it.

I'm already running FSX maxed out, and averaging around 70-100+ FPS, depending upon where I'm at and what I'm looking at.
Cairns to Brisbane with heavy cross winds on landing.
This gaming rig was a gift to myself following my most recent Afghan deployment. It came with a 680, however, included with the PC was a rebate card for $300 off any GPU purchase. It expired the end of this month, I certainly wasn't going to pass it up. Hell, would you?

That's a great rig and those graphics are crazy good!
There you have it folks, all you need to do to get awesome FPS in FSX is do a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Best. Recruitment campaign. Ever.
Det, was this a digital storm build, based on your background image above?
Yeah mate, it's a DS built rig. I've always typically built my own, but with my schedule and duties, I just didn't have the time to do so this time around. Regardless, they did a spectacular job and I couldn't have asked for a better configured system. If anyone is in the market for a new rig, doesn't have the time to do it themselves or simply doesn't want to, have a look at what they offer.
Way OT for the FSX thread... but I'm sure people will ask.

So now, beside my envy, you also have my respect.
As for your last question... No I wouldn't have passed that up! Great deal!
The bloom settings are tweaked via the ENB addon for FSX. IIRC, I downloaded a palette from AVSim or the REX forums. Don't really recall at present.
Everything is from Orbx and REX on the environment side. England, Wales, and Oz SP4. Airports include Cairns, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra.
Thank you so much, DetCord! One last thing - the palette is in a file called enbseries.ini, which should be in your main FSX folder. It's the contents of that file which I'm really interested in. Would you mind digging it out and sharing? Your bloom is the most realistic I've yet seen. It matches exactly what I see in life. Your last shot in particular is extremely convincing.
Thanks for listing your addons too It is very, very hard to think there was ever a time when simmers crowed that FS9 with the right addons would always look better than FSX ever could. If I hadn't read their comments with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it.

Be careful though mate, ENB can turn your FSX game into a keyboard inducing smash-a-thon if something goes wrong. Especially if it does irreparable damage necessitating a reinstall of FSX and the gigs worth of addons you may possess. I've been lucky thus far not to have had any crashes at all. So, utilize ENB at your own risk, and if at all possible, conduct a backup of the entire directory.

Personally, that's why I choose SweetFX over ENB. SFX also lets you change settings on the fly. ENB also was giving me performance issues.

Hey, cheers, Detcord! I owe you one. That's a great favour you did me!
The improvement this makes to my sim is literally night over day. The colour saturation is spot-on; the sim is horribly drab without it. And no keyboard smash-a-thons yet!
UKMIL Jaguar against Pablo Diaz's HDE2.0 clouds and sky. ActiveSky for the weather calcs. I wanted it to be a before/after shot but the weather regenerated right before I could take the non-enb shot.
I've installed Sweet FX but I clearly haven't tweaked it to the levels that are in all your pics. I'm not sure, frankly, where to start.
I've fallen to worshipping the dark payware gods of late. My round the world trip is getting expensive!
Just flight DC-3. I know that the colors are bland in this one, but I was impressed with how well REX captures the hazy desert dusk. Arizona sunsets may be beautiful arrays of color...but Persian Gulf sunsets look like this.
After much back and forth on what Huey to get, I settled on the Area 51 UH-1Y. I gathered that it's not the most realistic, but I wanted a jarhead bird and there are surprisingly few repaints for the other offerings. Personally, I think this one flies great and, for $20, you can hardly beat it.
In fact, I liked it so much I wound up getting the AH-1Z. Same price and just as fun!
I'm sure it must offer many of the same features as ENB, I just haven't played with it enough to know that 20% technicolor and 5% HDR looks like this or that. I, like I think many others, just look at some of the shots here and think: "Hmmm, my FSX doesn't look THAT good!"

It's a shame this particular aircraft has been a hangar queen for so long...
With the budget the way it is, I think the UH-1Y will be a long time coming!
The one downside to the Y is that it doesn't have that great Huey "wop, wop, wop" sound that sounds like it's beating the air into submission!
Deacon
503 Which is probably why that aircraft was used for the skin. It's the only one that could/would sit still long enough to get good images of it. Yeah, that wop, wop, wop sound is missed around MCAS CPEN which is where that aircraft/squadron is stationed.
Nice screen, Stormtrooper! Is that Carenado's Grand Caravan/Super Cargomaster? I've had my eye on that for X-Plane, but I'll probably wait until they update it for full 64-bit compatibility.
Freeware Noratlas from simviation. Cockpit and flight manual are in french though, and every time I go to load the plane engines sputter out and die. Soooo this is about as far as I got....

Yes it is Excuse the terrain, one of the areas i haven't purchased yet.
All starts well enough. Then a Aussie Supercell crops up and kills me. Well, it doesn't kill me, but my butt was really puckered on this one as cross-winds murdered my landing.
I'm not at all sure about the wingtip vortices... isn't the point of the winglets to eliminate the vortex at the end of the lifting wing (thus getting slightly more lift from the same area for lower drag (higher aspect ratio) by moving it up the winglet... where it can also be twisted in such a way as to obtain some 'relative' forward thrust (actually only a reduction in induced drag)...)?
Which is a complicated way of saying ~ shouldn't the tip-vortices come from the tips of the winglets, rather than that of the wings? ~ and also shouldn't the engine contrails be dominant in any situation where there is sufficient moisture to see tip-vortices?
and also shouldn't the engine contrails be dominant in any situation where there is sufficient moisture to see tip-vortices?
Not necessarily old boy - DetCord may not be high enough for contrails but, being in turbulent air, may still generate sufficient g each time he goes through a bump that the pressure drop within the vortex is enough to produce visible moisture. Well, maybe
Here's a selection of images from my weekly Sunday Morning flight. In Wales today, with real weather (via OpusFSX) all the way through. A pleasant flight in Dave Garwood's free-ware Auster Autocrat (available here: http://www.cbfsim.co.uk/cbfs_lib/thumbnails.php?album=3.)
Slow, but serene and quite calming. Which is good, since this flight transits restricted military airspace... Ooops!
Here's some of the Majestic Dash 8 which I'm really enjoying even though I'm a fish out of water flying tubeliners, maybe this is the one that will hook me (great indepth sim plane with awesome framerates so far). (scenery is ORBX+REX+OpusFSX)
Wow that PAKT shot with the lightning is a nice one Detcord.
PS. good to see it is not only me with no PAPI lights at Orbx PAKT, been meaning to see if that was the way it is supposed to be or a problem with my install, and see in your shots the same thing so must be the way the real airport is.
Compiled a list of dangerous airports in Canada and the States via Google Earth. Working through said list now. I have to say this first one had my butt puckered as the approach is terrible.
Awesome screens ST! Looks like Hornet is escorting that J-10 out of a carriers airspace.
Part II of my Dangerous Airports section.
Fairmont Hot Springs BC (CYCZ) - Not nearly as difficult as Revelstroke, but if you have the weather conditions set to realistic, it can be quite challenging. Beware the close proximity of the foliage along the runway and steep approach angle.
Det Cord - are you using any post processing (ENB, sweetFX, etc...)? Or just colors adjusted through you monitor/gfx card? Your shots look incredibly crisp and I really like the colors.

It's ENB mate. Though I am moving over to SFX if I can figure out the saturation aspects.

Would you mind sharing your ENB.ini? (assuming it's not one of the readily available ones) I'm using the "purple haze" one from the ORBX forums, but I like the looks of yours more.
I cannot believe how much gold is in this thread. If you haven't taken the time to go page by page, pick a random page number and just start flipping through. It's amazing!

I would but I've since removed it, ENB that is. I have to say I'm not that impressed with SweetFX in the least.
Ghost, nice to see that you picked up the Huey and Cobra...great shots!
I had always wondered if the guys who designed that power plant were oblivious to what it looked like.

After playing with the real thing for almost 20 years at MCAS CPEN, how could I not? And, I think I've got more flight time in 503 (the Yankee) than the actual aircraft. Hangar Queen.
WELCOME Comes, also kudos for the pictures! If I may ask, what's the framereate you have and with what monster of a machine... as with many other users, what I see is amazing. I wonder mine it's ugly and choppy
I got around 30 to 50 Frames if i don't fly over bigger Cities(+ Addons) like New York or San Francisco (second Screenshot). In Aerosofts Manhattan X it drops to ca. 12.
Sadly my machine is no monster at all. An i5 760 @ 2.80GHz with 8 GB RAM. I bought an AMD Radeon HD 7950 a few weeks ago, but as expected, it only had little impact on FSX's performance. CPU must be the bottleneck.
But Rise of Flight runs just perfect with the new card
I'm debating between that and the 707 for my next purchase. That era of aviation has always captured my imagination. I always felt I got winged about thirty years too late!
I'm doing an around the world tour that has been several years running, so I find it hard to justify great scenery in one region and average scenery everywhere else. But some of these shots look so incredible with add on scenery packages, that I find myself reconsidering.
Here's my old Connie pic to contribute to the vintage page
I think the VC is pretty nice. The only downside for me is that it can be kind of dark at dawn/dusk before the cockpit lighting comes on (even if I manually switch it). But I understand that this may be an FSX general issue?
Beyond that, the instruments look good, update fairly fast on my system and capture that vintage age luminous paint feeling quite well.
The Tiger Moth has a special place with me, as it's one of the first RC planes I got when I got way into that hobby a few years back. This is what happened to the first one after I had only been in the hobby for a few months...
After a while I missed it and bought another one. This is the one I have hanging in the shed right now:
Found a freeware Vulcan, the quality is well freeware, no cockpit and it has that converted from FS2002 to 2004 then to FSX feel, the sounds are pretty good though.
Tried to fly from 7WA3 to CBB7 in a C172. Got bored a little way in and switched to a Mustang to speed things up. Then switched to a Maule for the landing attempt at CBB7. FSX crashed right after I got the last screenshot.
Yeah, FSX has a knack for knowing just when to crash....
I was clicking around all over the place switching from "Mouse as Yoke" (yes, I did this with mouse yoke because I was too lazy to set up my joystick) to "Mouse Look" and back again. I think I clicked on "Tile Windows" or something and then tried to click something else right away when it crashed.
This is a repaint by Jan Kees, a very prolific painter that does beautiful work. The thing that struck me when I was going through his repaints was the great stories behind the planes he chose. This was one of the ones that amazed me...
From the readme by Jan Kees:
"P-51D-5-NA 44-13287 WD-M was the aircraft assigned to Lt William Parent of the 4th FS/ 52nd FG, based in Italy. On the 1st of September 1944 however, it was being flown by Major Wyatt P. Exum during an escort mission to Hungary. It was Maj. Exum's first operational mission nin [SIC] the ETO. On the way back from the mission, the squadron strafed an airfield, before spotting a moving train. Lts Strout and Wilson attacked the train, and as a result of Lt Wilson's attack, the engine blew up while he was overflying it, damaging his cooling system and setting the engine on fire. The fire quickly blew out, and Lt Wilson decided to make an belly landing in a recently plowed field. Over the radio, he heard Maj Wyatt Exum transmit "I'll be down to get you, Charlie!" and indeed he landed close to Lt Wilson's aircraft. Lt Wilson managed to turn Maj Exum's aircraft, as his tail wheel had become stuck in a rut in the field, and both men tried to squeeze into the cockpit. Meanwhile, men on horseback were approaching, shooting several holes in the aircraft. While Lt Wilson shot back with his .45, Major Exum gunned the engine, and they managed to take off with Lt Wilson half outside the cockpit with his .45. They flew the 400 miles back to Madna in Italy on their last fuel, and landed with other Mustangs landing from the other side. Major Exum received the Silver Star for this action, as well as from the undying gratitude and admiration from Lt Wilson. Repaint by Jan Kees Blom."
Um, wow.
So, in tribute, since I am around Italy in my 'round the world flight, I thought I'd see if I could do a little tribute to Maj Exum:
Over the Adriatic:
Crossing the Croatian coast:
Over Budapest:
On a right base to a field outside Budapest to pick up "Charlie". I am no great shake at flying the A2A P-51 yet and I don't even know if the field is long enough, so this should be interesting(The field is to the left of the nose in the picture...those two trees off the nose are about midfield).
The upslope will help...or give me something to crash into!
Made it. Can I get out?
Surprisingly good short field performance. Made it with a little to spare.
Homeward bound!
Thanks to A2A for a beautiful plane, Jan Kees for a great paint and terrific story, and Maj Exum for having stones the size of church bells!

Well spotted, and well re-enacted. It's the little historical tidbits that are often so fascinating.
Activity like the Major's was seriously frowned upon. That could very easily have been two lost aircraft and pilots. Getting away with it only meant the brass were forced to reward the Major publicly. But I can guarantee he got a thorough chewing out to go along with that Silver Star.
Yeah, had it been me, I never would have even thought to set down in a plowed field to try to get someone out. I'd be thinking about getting stuck in the mud and losing the plane, letting the plane be captured intact by the enemy, etc.
The funny thing is that Jan Kees has another paint on his site of a second guy who did the same thing!
I have always wished to have flown in those days. We used to stop in Las Cruces, NM for fuel on our way from NAS Kingsville, TX to NAF El Centro, CA. There was always a guy there that looked like Popeye's pappy watching us come and go. We got to talking to him one day and found out he was a P-38/P-51 pilot in the war.
He told us that, after the war, he was stationed with the Air Guard in Texas. On the occasional weekend, he would get to fly cross country back to see his folks in New York state.
He never filed a flight plan...and never got over 50ft.
I need to do more biplane flying....but it just takes so long to get anywhere! LOL!
Deacon
I hear ya. Because I like the "low and slow" planes so much, I rarely ever go from point A to point B. I usually pick an airfield situated in or close to some interesting scenery and then just explore the area. And even then, I rarely ever return to the airfield I started from; I'll either happen across another close by airport, or find an open field (or river/lake) and decide to try some off-airport landings.
Speaking which, how goes your real-life flying Malibu ?
Good. I had a health issue that kept me out of the air for a month or so, but I'm trying to sharpen back up again. I'd like to try taking my 2 year old son up sometime in the near future.
I've been doing a lot of flying. I'm doing more new things to expand my experience. Longer cross country flights. Flying different aircraft. Getting up in weather that I avoided before. Doing real soft field work that I haven't done since initial training. It shouldn't make a difference that it is my plane and not a training plane, but it does. Keeping current with night flying. Filling up the log book with hours.
And a few more showing off some landclass editing I've been doing...
I re-did a lot of the water class around Oahu to get reefs where there should be reefs and dark blue water where it should be dark blue. I also re-did some of the land class around Pearl Harbor and re-did a lot of Ford Island so that it isn't just a giant slab of concrete.
I added a lot of missing beaches to the South-Eastern edge of the island, including Waikiki beach. I also turned Diamond Head into volcanic rock instead of a mountain of jungle villages.
Great shots all, always motivates me to go fly FSX.
kilosierra that FSXGlobal shot looks really great, is that with default FSX landclass and mesh or does it include freeware/payware landclass/mesh? (UTX/FSGenesis?)
The Marines return to Wake Island: Aircraft Factory Corsair. (EDIT: Sorry, this was another Jan Kees repaint I believe but forgot to give credit)
Another great repaint for the A2A Mustang by Jan Kees (from the readme):
"P-51D 44-14534 IV-B "Princess Pat". The original Princess Pat was a P-51C (42-103339) flown by Lt. Edward J. Thorne with the 369th FS/359th FG out of East Wretham. This aircraft was lost 4 November 1944 to enemy AAA. Lt. Thorne survived and became a POW. This paint imagines he was able to limp back across the lines in his damaged craft and return to duty. 44-14534 did fly with the 369th FS as IV-B, but no assigned pilot is known.
Lt. Thorne was unusual in that he flew from March until November 1944 but never took credit for his victories (by his count, 4-6 in the air and 1 or 2 on the ground), in fact he refused to arm his gun camera. "I do it because it's my job" he said, "...but I don't want credit for it." He is credited with the first reported sighting of an Me-163 Komet rocket plane".
I finally found a night to fire up FSX again and take a break and fly someone else's stuff for a couple hours. Here are some snaps. Taking Megascenery Earth Nevada and Arizona for a ride. The Staggerwing is a gorgeous model. I know photo-real scenery isn't everyone's cup of tea, but man it can look amazing as you fly across the landscape. FSX + REX + MSE 2.0 (Nevada/Arizona) + FSDreamteam KLAS +_Aerosoft U.S. Cities Las Vegas + FSGenesis 2008.
Thanks guys. Ya I had to throw in a 109 since others were posting warbirds in FSX.
I need to modify and clean up my various Las Vegas scenery packs. I have some weird conflicts and I'm hoping to finally learn how to do that.
The MES 2.0 photo-real tiles are really cool in my opinion. I bought FTX and it's great, but man I love flying over the actual terrain and houses etc. even if they are flat. From altitude they don't look flat. And CA is coming soon. Will look great with the LA city scenery I bought.
Oh and I had SweetFX on using the same settings file as I use for ROF.
Of course you could start a new thread Jason. Say,... entitled BOS and post your personal (not promo) in game screenies in there regularly,.. hint hint pretty please
On a more serious note, how you get on with sweetfx, do you run in dx9 mode or dx10 in FSX? Ive recently swtiched to dx10 to try out given all the 3rd party (fixes) and its seems to run ok for me thus far.
So, ok, kludger, let's have the lowdown on your scenery...
Sure noprob, mountains were ORBX FTX PNW, airport was ORBX 3W5 Concrete Municipal, clouds were REX, weather was OpusFSX, planes were RealAir Legacy coming in for landing, Alabeo D17 Staggerwing bush flying low and fast over Mount Baker area (almost ended in a crash when I went into a dead end valley there, barely made it over). Screenshots are raw V key with just Shade installed.

I'm amazed how many people won't give up the details of their screenshots...ENB settings etc. Worried someone might post a better shot then them or something.

Yeah I agree Stormtrooper we should all do that when we post, I think most of us subconsciously forget because usually there is a litany of payware to list but it is really helpful so I will try to do that when possible, I've definitely picked up some add-ons from seeing nice shots here.

Most of us are regular posters here, and revealed settings previously in the post. I'm sure anyone here is happy to share all the elements of their FSX stack, but it would get tiresome if we did it every post. That said feel free to ask, or even better start a thread in the civil aviation forum asking users what their preffered fsx visual settings are. Its a frendly group whos always up for swapping settings

Yup, (almost) the entire state of California, most of Nevada and Arizona, the next best thing to FTX in my opinion. No auto-gen or hand placed objects, but it's free and it looks good at almost any altitude.
*Ding-ding-ding* We have a winner. It's St. Maarten, but without any extra photo-real embellishments. Decided to explore some famous areas I hadn't been to (IRL or virtually), and was struck by the overall beauty of the place... and how crowded it appeared to be.
Lewis, that C172 cockpit looks awesome and that shot is going to make me retry DX10 mode for the cockpit shadows, checking each day with hope that the C172 has been released.

malibu43, what Stearman is that? And how's the cockpit? Love the Cessna shot!
It's the Golden Age Simulations Stearman. The cockpit is OK. Nothing like the A2A C172 and probably not quite as nice as the Aircraft Factory F4U in my above shot, but it's not bad. It might fall a little short of what you'd expect for $25, especially considering the price of Carenado planes (about the same, but better quality) and the AF F4U (cheaper but still a little better in quality). I don't feel like I got ripped off or anything, though. I'm happy with my purchase.
Also, it's a Stearman. You shouldn't have your head down in the cockpit anyway!
Vertigo Studios has a Stearman package for $40, but I don't know if the quality is any better and justifies the extra $15.
I really wish there was some way to port the MS Flight Stearman and Maule to FSX, I really enjoyed the lively feel of both planes in that otherwise boring world.
I miss flying them both but not enough to reinstall MS Flight now that the Steam install stopped working due to the recent retirement of the Games For Windows servers, gotta love Microsoft, even with DRM they managed to screw the MS Flight users.

Ya. The Flight Stearman was nice. Especially considering it was free!

I was just looking a little more closely at the VS Stearman, and see that it's actually $33, not $40 (unless there some conversion issue). Hmmm... Based on the pictures on their website, it probably would have been worth $8 for the the VS version. Oh well...
I just recently got an E-Mail referring to the fact that my PB account was also low on bandwidth, they must be tryin' some new free account policy? If so...F 'em...I'm sick of the imposed restrictions just to get you to pay for a service. If it's free keep it free, if it aint just F'n say so...
Ya, I've been using PB for a few years now and have never had this happen. Then it's happened the last two months.
The only thing I can think of is that I've posted on the FTX forums both times, which I've never done otherwise. I wonder if there's just a ton of traffic there or something.
I guess I'll just wait for it to refresh whenever my "month" starts over...
A2A C172, ORBX PNW (flying into Port Angeles KCLM), REX, OpusFSX.
Thunderstorm going on outside now, and OpusFSX provided FSX thunderstorm to match (cool hearing real thunder and FSX thunder alternating), an exciting flight with a nice crosswind landing...good fun.
Quite a few here but wanted to show FTX Global post 1.1 patch. Pre-patch the deserts looked way too green. Post-patch it looks remarkably good. Between REX and FTXG, this is what Yuma looks like in the early evening...much like I remember it.
The only weird texture is the desert brush in the second picture. The sand tile has a green bush effect that's just a bit too green to be in the desert. From a distance though, it's not really noticeable.
Tiger, glad you found those tutorials useful! What a striking repaint you've done there, simply gorgeous!
As I've mentioned to a few folks, I've only just purchased FSX this past month. Still have never done an FSX repaint, but once I've managed on I'll see about adding anything different/useful to the SPS tutorial section.
EDIT: And I guess I will post my first official FSX screenshot today, lol. Not much of a glamor shot showing off FSX, but it's what I've been working on 95% of my FSX time. New 2D panel project I'm developing:
Thanks Adlabs, I look forward to seeing some more tutorials from you once you've accustomed yourself to FSX. I love the detail on that panel, very nice work!
Carenado's Cessna T206HD over Orbx's 65S Bonner's Ferry scenery. Opus FSX providing the real-world weather, REX Essential Plus OverDrive providing the atmospheric ambiance.
I have FTX Global but that field is a free download from simviation...can't recall the field, also I'm out of town so I can't look at my FSX scenery folder to let you know. Should be back at it this sunday however.
Hi DetCord, the 777 by PMDG is a great simulation of the plane. They have produced a beautifully modeled external model and VC. It models the systems in great depth with useful functions like the Electronic Check List which is extremely helpful in sorting through failures (which there a huge range that can be programed). The ability to import winds aloft data into the legs pages from programs such as Opus and ActiveSky with the press of a key is handy.
Some people have experienced increased OOM problems with this plane, but I've been OK so far, and in terms of frame rates it is similar to the 737NGX on my system.
My only slight reservation is probably to do with the 777 itself, rather than how PMDG have modeled it. The real plane is designed to be highly automated, and to me feels a bit soulless - but that's just me! I would certainly recommend it if you are interested in the 777.

I have the NGX, though I haven't spent a lot of time in it. It's not the difficulty of the systems, I just don't care for it that much. That said, I've been looking at the 773 for awhile now but I just can't decide if it's a worthy purchase.
I don't have the 777 but I do have the 737. Re: the 777, I haven't read a bad thing about it. The feedback I've seen has been almost universally extremely positive. If I have a reservation about buying the 777, it's that the plane is so automated as mentioned above. It really isn't meant to be hand flown.
Of course you can do whatever you want in-sim, but it sort of defeats the purpose of buying a $100 extremely detailed aircraft and then throw the procedures manual out of the window. But...still...it sure seems like a great plane to have and fly.
DetCord, yes the 777 comes with an American livery, not sure if its the new one? (sorry for the delay in replying, had a couple of days away for our wedding anniversary)
Eagle Rotorcraft Simulations (http://www.eaglerotorcraftsimulations.com/forums/index.php) has converted one of the military S2 version to FSX native and is supposed to eventually convert all the tankers as well. The FS9 versions work fine in FSX DX9, but I'm looking forward to the FSX conversions, especially with P3D 2.0 on the horzion...
Hey Detcord, what scenery is that? My distant scenery never looks that good and I'm running everything to the right, FTX or Megascenery. Your shot are just incredible!
Recent payware: Lionheart Studios Piper Pacer...

I'm really enjoying the C185. It's a no-brainer at the sale price of $8. I'm excited for FTX Vector to come out soon and give me some frozen rivers and lakes to use the skis on!
After seeing XP 10 and some of the newer sims, it has dated FSX for me quite a bit. The graphics, while nice, are starting to look a bit dated. That being said, FSX has had a nice run.
The main problem that I see with FSX for future development is that it's stuck as a 32-bit application and therefore is prone to performance issues because it can't take advantage fully of a modern gaming rig/memory.
Obviously the HUD is the weak link the cockpit, but according to FB they are working on a new one, so we'll see if that helps. I actually flew around without the HUD on and found it to be fun experience. So not a huge deal there.
I also found that my cockpit textures are not nearly as sharp as the images they show on their website (I can't read the serial number or whatever that is under the HUD. Too blurry in my install). Not sure what is up with that yet...
The FM was OK and seemed about on par with stock FSX helos. Sometimes it doesn't behave the way I expect it to, but I don't know if that is due to a poor flight model or my lack of understanding of how helicopters fly in certain conditions. I dropped the .air file from the HoverControl mod of the AlphaSim cobra into the folder and edited the .cfg file to use that one. It worked fine in a quick test and gave the chopper a more lively feel. I haven't tested enough yet to see if it screws anything else up.
All in all, yes, I think it's worth the $10. Especially if they improve a few things here and there with the service pack.
I think it's worth $10. But there are a few short comings still. But then again there is supposed to be a service pack any time now that fixes some of them.
Team KBT has updated their P-3 Orion to be FSX native (v3.0) and posted some betas over at Sim-Outhouse. Plus... they've inlcuded the Aero Union models!!!
Yep, I should just get it. Beautiful screen, Kludger!
Thanks yours as well, that last one with the Open Skies landing is one of my new wallpapers
NorCal is definitely ORBX's best work yet, well worth it.
I own every addon from Orbx, I mean all of them, every terrain and airport. Minus Global of course. I don't fly GA so I was kinda holding off on NORCAL for obvious reasons.
Hopefully it features enough airports that handle commercial traffic?

Why not Global?
Ironically, I'm the opposite btw. I only own FTX Global and FTX global vector. Both are must haves IMHO. Also, unless this changed recently, FTXG and FTXGV are both P3D and P3D 2 compatabible out of the box, as in Orbx supports them fully. Their dedicated area products are only supported in FSX.

Why not Global? I stick to what are typically domestic, short range routes (just did my first Trans-Atlantic flight yesterday in 5 years). It's probably why I fly in the UK (Orbx) as much as I do. A lot of the airports in the UK are regional and or hubs for various airlines.
For me Global is not yet compelling since it doesn't have the detailed hand placed ORBXLib object airports and POIs that the regions have.
I was actually checking out the ORBX NA regions I have installed in GoogleEarth and it amazes me to have such a large, highly detailed FSX area to fly in now.
I can pretty much fly the entire West coast from Monterey CA (KMRY) to Anchorage AK (PANC) and as far east as Edmonton (CYXD) and Billings Montana (KBIL) without ever leaving ORBX goodness and being able to land at a nicely detailed airport anywhere I stop:
(Tongass Fjords is the white area which was done by Holger and also very high quality and bridges the gap between ORBX AK regions)
Personally I hope they keep putting out quality regions until the entire FSX/P3D world is covered at this level of detail
Wish we had a like button, I love most of the screenshots posted in this FSX thread (one of my favorite SimHQ threads) but often don't post thumbs up replies to avoid polluting it with non screenshot posts.
Hey Kludger, which REX wave animation do you use? I like the amount of underlying water texture/color that shows through.
I'm using REX4 Texture Direct "Distant Caps" wave animation which looks really great in DX10Fixer...
The combo of DX10Fixer and REX4 made a huge difference for how FSX looks and runs for me, so much so that I stopped being interested in P3D for the foreseeable future.

Ahh... Thanks. I'm still just using REX Essentials+.
I wish there was a demo of DX10 fixer. I was all excited about it until I saw the price tag. $30 is too much to experiment with.
I wish there was a demo of DX10 fixer. I was all excited about it until I saw the price tag. $30 is too much to experiment with.
My experience using it on two different systems was it did nothing for my performance. Certainly if you're running DX9 on a decent system and follow Kosta's guide then DX10 is no better or worse. If you do switch to DX10 be careful with some of the DX10 guides, particularly the one on Avsim which has some very strange ideas, and tells you to do some stuff that's just plain wrong.
Where DX10 may make a difference is more efficient use of your 32bit VAS, so if you are running FSX packed out with all sorts of addons you have a bit more headroom before you hit the VAS limit and get an OOM.
Yeah I had a similar feeling about the $30 DX10Fixer, I had tried the free DX10 patches using AVSIM guide with poor effects (probably missed some step from the guide), and so it was hard reading how great it worked for folks while not for me and at that price it was an expensive gamble.
I finally decided to try the DX10Fixer after reading some posts about people who had similar problems with the free patch but the pay fixer made it foolproof, and once I saw that P3Dv2 was still going to remain a half-ass future due to licensing issues with some of the payware I love.
For me the pros for the DX10Fixer is how easy it is to turn on and off DX10 mode (just a button and no config file messing around at all) and I mainly enjoy the new lighting and reflections of DX10 which are similar to what P3Dv2 users are benefiting from.
Here's two screenshots each I took just now with DX9 and DX10 in the exact same default flight time and location (Friday Harbor Ultralight) with the same OpusFSX weather engine in static "cold fronts" theme, just changing DX9/DX10 DX10Fixer mode and REX4 texture/animations mode:
DX9 + REX4 in DX9 textures/animations mode: DX10 + REX4 in DX10 textures/animations mode: DX9 + REX4 in DX9 textures/animations mode: DX10 + REX4 in DX10 textures/animations mode:
The main benefit of DX10Fixer for me is getting the improved DX10 lighting/reflections/shadows/bloom that P3Dv2 got but still being able to use all the FSX payware I own and love. It also feels like I get a small bump in FPS (~10%) in complex scenery situations, but most of the time my framerate stays near my 30 locked rate.
The other benefit of DX10 is being able to use the new REX4 DX10/P3Dv2 specific textures/animations.
So overall I would not recommend DX10Fixer as a revolution in FSX especially at the $30 high price point the author sadly put it at, but when you look at it as an incremental enhancement to FSX that puts it near the level of P3Dv2 without the payware licensing and porting hassle, then it was a purchase I am happy with.
REX4 upgrade for me was mostly for the DX10 mode texture/animations and to reward the REX developers for all the awesome free upgrades they provided to my original REX purchase over all these years for no additional cost for such a great product and developer, so I was glad to help support their new innovations for DX10 mode.
If your FSX/P3D budget is a tight one I would probably say to hold off on DX10Fixer until it is a cheap thing to try, or until P3D doesn't come with any payware tradeoffs.
PS nice night shot in the A2A C172, I didn't even know it was able to do night ops... will have to try that sometime.
One thing that always bothered me about DX9 was FSX's internal framerate limiter. Using the FSX internal limiter, once the desired framerate was reached the excess thread time was then turned over to the terrain loading, which helped with keeping the blurries at bay (always my bugbear with MSFS ever since FS2002!). The problem is there was always something wrong with the internal framerate limiter. For example, without the limiter I might be able to hit 40-50fps, but as soon as I put the limiter to 30fps my framerate would drop to 20fps. I nearly always had this problem across multiple systems.
With DX10 I don't see the same behaviour when the internal frame rate limiter is used.
I totally agree about the price. It was a mistake putting it at $30. The guy either got greedy or listened to some really bad advice. I remember prior to the release the hype for this was really getting out of hand on Avsim especially, and some were predicting it would only cost $10, would easily sell 250,000 copies and would reinvigorate FSX and cure all the old performance complaints. Given the availability of the free shader fixes that the same guy did, I really don't think the addition of a basic GUI and a few more fixes is worth the $30 I paid.
As for REX4.... I think it's a huge improvement over REXE. I always found the cloud and sky textures in REXE and its predecessors to be way over the top and looked out of place in the sim. With REX4 the textures look much more natural and fit into the sim much better. I also really like how loading a texture theme now takes a few seconds as opposed to minutes waiting with my screen doing all sorts of crazy stuff like it did with older versions.
Yeah I love just how fast REX4 is to startup, pick a different texture and install it, you can literally do it in seconds, whereas REX2 previously took a long time to start initialize weather (which is not part of REX4), and a long time to install textures.
Wow. Thanks for all the info guys! I'll hold off on the DX10 fixer for now. And thanks for the mini-reviews of REX4! I was actually thinking of asking about that. I've been trying to decide if I should get it or not. I probably won't just yet, since I'm still pretty happy with REXE.

Ya. My pilot should probably turn those panel lights down. He's killing his night vision!
I wanted to do something more elaborate on the wings, but there are some weird scaling issues with the bottoms of the wings and ailerons. There's no paint kit so it's a little bit of trial and error.
Thanks! I'm experimenting with the alpha channel and spec maps trying to add a little more life to it. Unfortunately it involves a lot of experimenting and trial & error (in other words time consuming and tedious).
that's an EP-3E by Team KBT, a bit of a bear to find, it's on a google drive somewhere...if you search the forums at sim outhouse you might find it....took me a few days to figure it out though
I actually got to see one of these take off, back around 1974, from Kadena AFB, which is where this screenshot was taken. Talk about the ground rumbling...
I grew up right next to the flight line in Kadena. I don't think we owned anything that didn't bounce off the floor at least once when the Habu's took off.
Lufthansa RJ85 on the way to Salzburg. Since installing the DX10 scenery fixer, and following some basic instructions, this sim has been working like a dream. Hope you all like it.
Just got back from a vacation and was inspired to try another repaint. There is a great HD version of this paint for the Carenado C208, but nothing for the stock C208. Unfortunately quality is limited by the entire aircraft using one 1024x1024 texture.
It took a few hours to finish this off last night (longer than I thought!). The grey "swooshes" and airline website cross over several doors/hatches that are mapped separately, so there was a lot of trial and error regarding placement.
Overall I'm happy with how it turned out, and it was a great learning experience.
Thanks Kludger. The thing that made it possible is that someone had already taken the plain white C208 texture that comes with FSX and broken it out into a layered paint kit with things like shading and panel lines as separate layers. That allowed me to (mostly) just add the red, grey, and other unique details in solid colors and place their layers appropriately in Gimp.
In 2009 I was doing the Howell Mt Challenge mountain bike race, which runs right past the Angwin airport. As I was huffing my way down a dirt road right past the runway in the early, hot morning, this red and white C172 quietly floated past me going in the opposite direction and gently touched down. Right there in the middle of that mountain bike race I decided I was finally just bite the bullet and get my pilot's license. I took my check ride a year later almost to the day. Never had a chance to fly up there, though.
Reminds me of my flight school roomate. He grew up in Bakersfield Ca on a bullriding scholarship (no kidding).
One day, while he was sitting atop Lightning...or Tornado...or whatever angry steer they had just kicked in the jimmy to make even angrier, he saw a fighter touch down at the neighboring airfield.
He looked down at the bull between his legs. Looked at the fighter. And said: "Huh, that doesn't look too hard"...
...and signed up for the Marine flight program the next day.
Happy D-Day everyone!
Warbirdsim P-51B climbing out over southern England on his way to stir up some trouble around Normandy.
Link?....gave up posting pictures too since i was outclassed lol.
Don't stop posting! I love this thread. Sometimes it's seeing a plane that I don't have (or even know about). Sometimes it's just the story that one simple picture can tell; nice sunny afternoon hedge hopping or white knuckled crosswind landing in Hong Kong.
I never get tired of seeing people's shots.
Here's the link. I feel a little undeserving compared to some of the shots on here.
While they're both good, there's something about that second shot especially that speaks to me of those early morning takeoffs, seeing the long shadows across the mountain valleys, the fog down on the river. Awesome!
Did you think Aerosoft's London was a dramatic improvement over ORBX? I have the latter and love it!
Yeah nice shots everyone, please keep posting, I love this thread since I don't seem to have as much time to fly FSX lately, I fly vicariously via your screenies
Also glad to see shots from Flight which I also wish they hadn't abandoned so abruptly to the point that I can't play or install it anymore on Steam, posting one of my own from Flight a while back (Talkeetna, AK):
I just did the two Arma 3 screenshots, not any of the other ones. The AF 747 in the fog is a particular favorite of mine though.
Cool didn't realize the Arma3 ones were you, so altogether it looks like there were at least 4 SimHQ'ers in the RPS exhibition: Detcord Deacon211 Para_Belum Sethos88
Just found the time this evening to check out my three latest acquisitions: Just Flight Chipmunk, Alabeo Cessna Cardinal and the Alabeo Diamond DA-40.
The weather in my part of the world has been pretty miserable for the last few days, ASN did a pretty good job of depicting a very damp and murky evening.
I forgot to get a shot of the Cardinal's cockpit. Both the Cardinal and DA-40 have RealityXP integration, but I hadn't enabled it for these shots so you see the default FSX GPS in the DA-40 panel.
Ah, OK I've seen those. I guess I frequently interpose ORBX, FTX, REX and all the other Xs. Sometimes I don't know which witch is which.
As malibu stated, they're only themes. It injects that weather theme into the sim. Whatever weather textures you're using (REX, ASN etc) will be utilized when choosing said theme.
The Sibwings An-2 was one of the flight simming highlights of 2013 for me. One of the finest aircraft ever made for MSFS and you can see how much effort and talent the developers poured into it, yet it slipped under most peoples' radars and went largely unnoticed.

I can totally sign that...the AN-2 is my best airplane-buy beside the majestic dash8...systems and flightphysics are en par with f.e. A2A-products(C172, Piper)...highly recommended for everyone...
Some shots showing off the combination of FTX Global Textures, Global Vector, and FTX OpenLC EU. Shots taken over Germany and Greece. It's really apparent that different regions can now look very unique, thanks to the custom textures.
I'm still not convinced about the new AA livery. The tail spoils it for me. The old one was much better, but I understand it was pretty hard to maintain and not really feasible in a world where airliners are being made less from metal.
Still, nice shot, I'm a fan of the 777. It looks like a -200ER so I'm guessing it's the Captain Sim model? How is it on framerate and VAS? How do you rate it compared to the PMDG one?

I heard 1.4 was a huge improvement over earlier versions.
Hmmmm. Tempting. Very tempting.
It flies like a dream and the systems works perfectly. I did get a OOM, but I'm 99.9% certain that it's related to my tweaking of the FSX config. I'd say give it a try. Can't beat the price in comparison to PMDG that's for sure.
To be honest, it's rather difficult to gauge what exactly REX4 adds to the existing REX lineup. The water textures look great, no doubt, but overall it feels like much of the same. If you're willing to shell out 30-40+ Dollars or Euros for more 2D cloud sprites and some other minimalist features then go for it. I just didn't find it to be worthy of the price tag whatsoever.
I actually like REX 4 mostly for its speed and simplicity (and it does look better I think). But it is probably not worth $40 if you have REXE...unless you never change your textures due to the loading times, then you will probably use REX 4 more often.
Now when it goes on sale for sub $20 as it already has twice and hopefully will again, it is a different story.

I found the opposite. The older REX product had a huge amount of texture sets and the majority were in my opinion, just too dramatic and over the top. I used to cringe when I saw screenshots with totally unrealistic and overly dramatic sky and could textures. The old REX interface was also agonisingly slow to install the textures.
With REX4 you get less textures, but what's there is far more natural and much better looking in my opinion, and the interface installs the textures in two or three seconds.
I'd give my right arm to see a fully Accusimmed version, though I've come to understand that is probably not going to happen.
I do have the racer upgrade, but so far I seem to torch my engines about ten times more than, say, the A2A Mustang...which makes me wonder a bit.
Being a old Marine, I lament that there are so few recent naval aircraft that are done to the quality of A2A or Warbirdsim. There is a Wildcat in the works that I saw over at the Outhouse that I'm very excited about. My old squadron made its name in that portly little fighter. :-)
Deacon
P.S. I sort of sit in the middle on REX 4. Sometimes I don't mind a little over the top sunrise/set and wish that there were a few more options for REX 4. On the other hand, I think the quality of REX 4 is better and the speed inclines me often to just hit random and see what I get.
I did a comparison of the two just swapping out textures a few months back...
What terrain is that? My terrain never seems to be as clear as some of these pictures.
Incidentally, does anyone know how to get higher res terrain in spot view? I look out the window and I think, "lovely!". I go to spot view and I think, "meh,".
Increase the LOD radius... I think the maximum setting you can get using the FSX settings screens is 4.5 - if you edit your FSX.CFG manually you can increase it further, but at the cost of performance and increasing the probability of an OOM sooner rather than later.
Force 16x anistropic filtering through your graphics card drivers (Nvidia Inspector, etc), don't just rely on the settings in the sim.
In spot view hit "-" a couple of times to bring the zoom back to 0.8, this increases the clarity of the ground textures quite a bit.
I alternate between a 9.5 and 6.5 LOD radius, depending upon what I'm flying. AXE works perfectly with 9.5 while Captain Sim and PMDG do not. Loading those hi-res terrain tiles with increased LOD coupled with 4K aircraft liveries tends to end badly.
Detcord I agree the AXE forums are full of people complaining of CTDs because their systems cannot cope with all the detail being loaded and it's a case of finding the sweet spot. I am reading that the 2GB GTX760 will allow better texture loading than my current 1GB GTX560 but don't want to waste my money. I no longer get CTDs but have had to compromise slightly on detail to do it. I run FSX at 1920x1080P with a 4670K and 8GB of RAM. What do you think?
The skins John Terrell has done for Warwick Carter's T-6G are works of art. They've got to be some of the most eye catching repaints I've ever seen.
Is that the JF BoB pack Hurri? It's pretty nice too, just a shame that such a historically important aircraft has been neglected by FS developers. Don't even get me started on the Bf109.
I also spy some Real Air Spitfires. Clearly a man of exquisite taste
I love the Spit but agree that the Hurri gets its historically short end of the stick in FSX.
The Real Air Spits are a nice package for the late model and have aged well. The T-6 I've only discovered lately but is payware quality freeware no doubt.
It's hard to believe the RealAir Spitfire in its current incarnation is SIX years old now. It still knocks the socks off just about every other FSX Warbird out there except for the Accu-Sim stuff.
Just goes to show how good Sean Maloney and Rob Young are at their craft, and how good value the RealAir stuff is.
The T-6G is an absolute gem of a freeware warbird, and with John Terrell's amazing repaints is without a doubt payware quality, and by that I mean good payware quality, not the run of the mill stuff that gets churned out.

Don't waste your money on anything in the 7 series like I did (780) mate. You're better off with a £250-300 single 2GB 680 to be honest. The next generation of GPU's that utilize the Pascal Architecture are right around the corner, so I wouldn't be to eager to pick up anything as expensive as a 760 or above. Especially when it's going to be totally blown out of the water in a year or so.
EDIT - Besides, you're better off OC'ing for better performance in FSX. Did wonders for me.
Yes but the 760 2GB @ 1.1GHz is only £159 now. I read that the 2GB will load textures far better than my 1GB and allow me to increase detail etc. But I take your point about the new ones out soon but as FSX is more CPU biased I doubt there would be a benefit.
I've lurked here for years, replying a handful of times, but never uploaded a screenshot before. I tend to not think about it when flying. I think i'll fix that now. Here I am taking Aerosoft's BeaverX for a spin somewhere over Texas. Addons: GEX USA/Rex Essentials+. No editing except for some cropping due to running a Triple Monitor setup. Hi guys! :P
Here is a fictitious paint scheme for a fictitious airline I made up for Milton Shupe's freeware Dash 7. All the paint schemes the Dash 7 comes with are for specific areas I will most likely hardly ever fly in.
I don't think so. I never changed my cfg to allow higher res to keep the FPS up. Warbirdsim has some awesome paint jobs with nice sharp panel lines on the paint kit. I love the A2A Mustang and how it flies, but the WBS 51 sometimes looks better and has some cool individual features like field mod mirrors, different antennas, etc.

Have you checked out Jankees paints? He has done some beauty's for both A2A and WBS.

Don't have the addon, so there isn't much point. I just wanted to see the texture sizes.
The JS41 actually did cross my mind but I dismissed it as the aircraft in the pic looks like it has a t-tail.... which says King Air to me.... but the nose was all wrong for a King Air.... so I was back at square one!
Thinking about it, the JS has a mid-mounted tail, which makes sense now.
Still, that's a really good angle to take a screenshot from if you want to test somebody's aircraft identification skills
The PMDG 777X is truly an impressive addon. I especially like the weather radar on the ND! Something I have to check out. Maybe I could get some Activesky historical weather for the recent big thunderstorms and see what it looks like.
I also like the AI, what package are you using?
I just could never get into airliners in FSX the same way I did in FS9... probably because of the performance and VAS issues. I can fly the PMDG 747-400 or Wilco Airbus into or out of a large detailed airport like UK2000 Heathrow or FlyTampa Dubai with dozens of AI aircraft, heavy weather... and FS9 doesn't skip a beat. If I tried that in FSX it would run like a slideshow and then eventually choke on memory. That's kind of why I haven't plonked my credit card number down for the 777-300ER expansion, I know I'd never get anything like my money's worth out of it.
Yes - DetCords right it's UK2000 East Midlands own static AI. As the airport is a large cargo hub there's a nice mix of aircraft.
East Midlands was my hub when I was flying for a BMI VA. It rates up there with Birmingham for some of the worst cross-winds in the UK during inclement weather.
It's functional but doesn't look as good as the T-45. I feel like the camera is too much forward in the cockpit, have the same problem with the T45, but maybe that's just me.
Nice repaint Billyote. Is it the aerosoft Beaver ? Do you recommend it ? I've been lurking at it for a while but the price tag seems ridiculously high for an addon released in 2007.
I don't understand why FSX addons remain so expensive for so long.
Arma 1 got released in 2007 too and you can buy the gold edition on steam for $10. The beaver cost 3 times more !

It's pretty good. I just wanted a good quality Beaver that wasn't the stock one. Quite a few liveries, and models with floats, skies, bush and regular tires. Maybe a little much for such an old model, but I'm enjoying it anyway.

Next thing I plan on snagging is the SSW F-84F!
Thanks for the answer. One last thing, is it bug free ?
I'm asking this because I bought the Dornier 27 (published by Aerosoft, also 7 years old, only for $37, a real bargain !) a few weeks ago and it came with 2 major bugs. One made the windshield completely opaque when flying trough rain/clouds and the other makes the rear windows opaque too. (you'd think by now they'd have had the time to include the fixes in their download, nope, would probably cost even more if they did...) I was able to find a fix for the windshield but not for the rear window. Ask on their forums a week ago, no answer...
My patience is wearing thin with aerosoft, what's happening to me with the Do-27 is unacceptable, not for a full price 7 years old addon.
sorry for the rant
@plainsman Wow, that's impressive. Is the entire europe covered with this level of details ? Or some area have received more love than others ?

I'm sure I've heard Aerosoft are going to do a "Beaver Extended" just like they re-worked the Twin Otter X into the "Twin Otter Extended". It's pretty scandalous that in 2014 the only Beavers for FSX are the default one and the original Aerosoft one which if I'm not mistaken was the very first FSX native payware aircraft.
As for the Do-27..... it was made by Digital Aviation. It was originally an FS9 addon and was ported over to FSX but never made fully SP2 native before the lead developer quit the scene. It's a great aircraft and a crying shame it never got made fully SP2/Acceleration compatible. I agree it doesn't reflect too well on Aerosoft that they are still selling it at full price and the product description does not mention it's an FS9 portover and all that entails...
Digital Aviation don't exactly have a squeaky clean record either. They've done some really great stuff over the years like the Piper Cheyenne and Diamond DA-20, but they've also got a few black marks against their name.... the failure to properly update the Do-27 to FSX being one, and their failure to keep their promise to develop a VC for the FS9 and FSX Fokker 100 they did. They've also been developing a CRJ for what seems like forever and a day. Whether or not that ever sees the light of day is also perhaps open to question.
I've also searched the DA forums but those are the same links as on the Aerosoft forums. Honeslty, I've spent more time looking for a fix than flying the plane.
I know the Do-27 isn't from aerosoft but they are the publisher of the DvD version and they -use to- provide support for it on their forums. I doubt they do that for free, so it means they are making profit out of this plane and if they're unable to provide support anymore I have a serious issue with that.
EightBall, The only bug I've seen so far in the Beaver is in the VC. There is a hand written checklist to the left of the yoke that glows in the cockpit at night, like it's backlit. But it's so minor it doesn't bother me. When I was looking for a Beaver I think I read a thread somewhere on the Aerosoft forums that there wasn't any immediate plans to do an extended Beaver, but didn't say that it wouldn't happen at all.
Stormtrooper ! Come here ! Put your face against the monitor, I'm going to kiss you !
The link on the simforums works, don't understand how I missed it.
Thank you very much
I'm relentless when looking for a fix for an aircraft i pay for. The Alpha jet wasn't payware, but i spent a lot of time looking for that Luftwaffe repaint. Joined vGAF forums just to get it lol.
Very nice... You can never go wrong with a Spitifre
Just checking out the new Iris PC-9A.... fairly short flight from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock. Orbx Australia SP4, Orbx Alics Springs, Aerosoft Ayers Rock.
If the Aerosoft one was a full price airport at €20 plus I'd say no it's not worth it. At €10.95 it's very cheap and a nice refinement over the OzX one, which of course is still pretty nice and like all the other OzX stuff a good example of great freeware.
Today's flight - a pretty short one from Damyn's Hall to Manston in the Alabeo DA40. All Orbx scenery. Experimenting with some ENB and Shade settings...
Thanks mate, it's the Carenado CT206H. Fantastic little aircraft but as with most Carenado aircraft it just doesn't feel as 'alive' as I'd like. Looks great though

Yeah I agree. The Carenado stuff that Bernt Stolle did the flight models for are pretty good, but the rest of the flight models are a bit meh. Still enjoyable to fly but as you say, not quite as "alive" as something from RealAir.
Have you tried any of the Carenado or Alabeo stuff in X-Plane? Done by a different developer and quite a lot better than the FSX stuff.
Finally picked up the Sim Skunk Works F-84. Seems pretty awesome. I'm going through the manual and just did a quick run through of basic start-up/shutdown/taxi stuff to get the feel for everything. Pretty happy with it so far.
For anyone that's not already aware, StrikingSoftware.com has produced some great FREEWARE for the caribbean. The package that covers TNCM, TFFJ, and SABA is great for anyone (like me) that was feeling too cheap to buy the FlyTampa version.
However, once a nice freeware mesh was added to TFFJ, the runway StrikingSoftware runway didn't really line up with the trough in the hills... It made final approach... interesting.
I got the itch to fix it, and came up with this after heavily modifying the stock FSX layout.
I also made a little landclass adjustment around SABA.
Before:
After:
If I had some kind of billing rate for my personal time, I'm sure I've gone way beyond the cost of FlyTampa to make these changes. But I had a lot of fun in the process.
Detcord; That's a brilliant shot, I've been trying to do one like that for ages, never got the timing right.
Anyway, I know that ground shots aren't that common, but I really liked the attached pushback moment and thought it worthy of posting. Hope that you all like it.
Beautifully thin and very light for a 17", but be aware it has no optical drive.
It's my second MSI gaming laptop. After flight simming on laptops out of necessity for over a decade now the MSI ones for me are far and away the best choice. Very good build quality, good specs, off the shelf models without the inflated price tag of custom build or boutique brands (Alienware... overpriced, poor build quality).
This one cost me just shy of £1,500, so following the usual convention that the pricing of consumer electronics in the US versus the UK merely involves swapping the £ sign for a $ sign you should be able to pick one up for considerably less than I did.
The 970m and 980m almost close the desktop/laptop gap, almost. Couple more years and mobile GPU's will defiantly be on par with their desktop counterparts.
I've owned three gaming laptops, really expensive ones ($2300+). This was primarily due to being in the military and constantly on the go with deployments. Being in a TRADOC post now at Lost-in-the-Woods has pretty negated the need for one.
While gaming laptops offer mobility and ease of use, they do have drawbacks. One is that heat will become a issue over time with usage, that drastically reduces their lifespans, and there is nothing you can do about that, period. Another issue that arises also has to do with power consumption. Even plugged in, they drain battery life like you wouldn't believe.
So, if you're constantly on the go then its a easy purchase. It makes sense. But it should never be considered as a desktop replacement.
P-3C leaving Moffett field for a sneak pass at Fleet Week.
And, Holy Cow! Finally tried carrier ops in FSX! As a huge F-18 fan, I can't believe I never tried this before.
And then, OMG, installed AI Carriers2 and Javier's Nimitz.
I am totally excited about naval ops in FSX, as it's something I've missed in the other sims I've played over the last few years (a little lacking in SF2 and non-existent in DCS). I've downloaded Dino's T-45 and F-14, but haven't installed yet. Also thinking about the Virtavia A-6E.

Yeah I've been hugely impressed with the 970M. I'm in a similar situation with regards and although I have a desktop for use when I'm home on leave I have to use a laptop most of the time.
I've had nine high end laptops in the last ten years and this one is definitely the best one straight out of the box in terms of performance. The Alienware M15X I had in 2008 was about as good, but lacked in the build quality and was more expensive. I was looking at a balls out custom build that would cost about £4k (so what, best part of $6k) but to be honest I think I get much better bang for buck with this off the shelf model for nearly a third of the price.
Malibu - do a search for the Virtual Blue Angels F/A-18 for FSX. It's a really big improvement over the Acceleration Hornet. If you can't find it drop me a PM and I'll see if I can upload it to Dropbox or something.

I actually downloaded their stuff a while back but eventually uninstalled it because I wasn't flying the FA-18 much. I may look at it again. I have this weird thing about duplicate versions of the same aircraft, and I was kinda bummed that the FSX Blue Angels stuff installs in addition to the default Acceleration F-18's, rather than over-writing/improving the Acceleration stuff. That's just a personal preference thing, though.

One of the things I haven't bought into yet, is combat in FSX. I just feel like there are combat sims that do it better (with a "full" combat environment). Specifically, in the case of an FA-18C or E, I'd rather hold out for the Coretex F-18E for DCS. Given the amount of time I have to learn new flight sim stuff, I'd probably just be figuring out how to land the VRS Super Bug on a carrier in FSX by the time Coretex Super Bug comes out. So I'd rather wait for the whole enchilada.
For now I'm going to continue exploring freeware options. I just found a CV-10 at Sim-outhouse to land my Aircraft Factory F4U on...

I hear you, and I never really used either package for combat ops either (VRS banked too heavely on the FSX@war project, which I haven't heard any update on, but from vid I've seen around the web looks promising), but it does bring excellent Naval ops to the table in the mean time.
Also, if you could take off and land the baby bug, you can easily do the same in the Super Bug without cracking the manual. The AI carriers UI is still very intuitive, and just as in real life, the Superbugs pit has a lot of commonality with the baby bug, making the transition easier.
Plus, skills learned operating the VRS Bug will surely translate to the DCS version for Cortex.
Just picked up the A2A B377 w/ Cpt of the Ship. What fun to fly, but still learning to get the hang of it. Finally made a full flight today. Approach and landing were a little rough, but I made it. I'll take it!
Some more only cropped the originals. Except the first one the rest were shot from the deck while the AI landed an FSX military mission. I was BOB from Orbx.
so far i have added a simple jet engine thrust physics model to it. and the EH101 could barely reach 256 knot TAS at low altitude in a level flight, without changes to the main rotor. at that speed the main rotor has nearly zero control capability. so EH101 can't go faster without ailerons and elevator, no matter how big are the engine thrust and wing lift.
Aerosoft's Tomcat? I didn't even know that was released. I got a beautiful AZUS gaming laptop back on Father's Day and let my son have my desktop. I never got around to putting my FSX back on it. Mostly because of what a royal pain in the ass it is. I know I'm going to have to make it compatible with 8.1, and then put all my payware back in. That means hunting down serial numbers and then installing updates, repaints....yadda, yadda, yadda. FSX can take the better part of your day to reinstall. I just haven't felt like doing it. But I keep looking at the screenshots, and now a new f-14, and two new Phantoms coming out.....oh well. I guess I'll do it. (Slinks off, dragging his feet, to get his FSX discs).
it's not an aircraft package for FSX. it's the built-in EH101 from FSX Acceleration, with added features by an app which is currently under development. it doesn't work in FSX alone.
I've been playing around with AiCarriers yes. Enterprise is Payware from Team SDB and FFG33 FFG48 USNS Patuxent came with the Aerosoft F-14. The rest are freeware.
Awesome screen shots recreating "The Final Countdown" ... loved that movie - ended too soon. I wanted the USS Nimitz to stay back in time to kick arse against the entire Japanese fleet!!!
The Zeppelin - that's the old one from Bill & Lynn Lyons, right? That was a fun thing to fly. Too bad that he/they totally quit making add-ons - they were always really special.
I remember some time travel movie where a Zero has been shot down by an F-14? Jens
Yeah, after seeing Stormtrooper's pic I went to watch some footage on Youtube. You can see the Tomcat struggling at that speed. At some point both the Zero and the F-14 are doing a split S and the F-14 is dropping like a rock, it looks like he's almost stalling (@ 4:10 min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkOsXNF_ZoM
mmmh, the good ol days, when it was cheaper to use real aircraft than CGI :P

Probably really cheap when you consider the Navy might have footed part of the bill.
My understanding is that if you allow them some editorial control (basically the right to have the content not shown if they don't like it), the various Military branches will let yo feature their toys in your movie for free.
a fictional coaxial helicopter with minimal polygon count but with detailed rotor blade animation.
intended look
the color of blades can be changed to make them look more clear, or to adapt to other helicopters (each rotor is a module that can be attached to any helicopter model)
left pedal
right pedal
left cyclic
scale down physics RPM to let the blades drop down
i have a faster pc but i seldom turn it on. i mostly use a Atom Z3740D Win8 tablet to run fsx (and almost anything else that needs a pc to run). because the graphics are not important for me. these screenshots are not about the scenery or even the fuselage of the aircraft, but the most special part of a helicopter - the main rotor. in fact the rotors are constructed with simple geometries and materials too , but they can precisely reflect what manveur the helicopter is doing. i enjoy watching a realistically moving rotor than pretty sceneries.
It was built for FS9, but works fine in FSX; there are just some minor issues the trees, from some angles they can appear a bit reflective, but if you can overlook this, it works fine. The same group has also made a version of RAF Wildenrath, which I might download and install tonight. There are also a couple of remote bases for the Harrier, which were satellite fields to Gutersloh.
The Harrier GR3 is the Wilco model, with a number of minor changes made by myself. Under 21,000lbs you can get a true vertical take off.
a cousin of OH-58 Kiowa -- Bell 206 W , where W stands for "Warrior"
Excuse me, where I can download this modification? Seems like the FSX default Bell 206..... Very very interesting....How did you do? As you did, to edit the model.cfg?
i have a program which attachs objects to an existing aircraft. that helo is indeed the default Bell206 in fsx. so far the program is under development.
Wow FT! This and your Harrier Gutersloh pics are fantastic! Did you download both from AVSIM? I really wish some brave soul would compile all the available military bases from around the world under one site. With my fresh install of FSX and seeing FSX@war maturing, I want to add some military bases just like these you've showcased. I know much of the MAIW stuff ports over and I will look into those too after my TDY next week. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me.
Come on over Kludger! I saved you a seat on the bandwagon!
Hehe, I am close to that bandwagon, it is mainly a few of my favorite payware not running there (Flight1 B200) or having to be repurchased (PMDG) that is keeping me away for now, hopefully those things will sort themselves out eventually.
FSX SE (default + Aerosoft A320/321) First flight from LOWI to LFMN (Aerosoft's step by step tutorial) It's very rewarding when you get all that stuff working properly. Now i just need to know how to land the big boy!
How much of that airbus flight deck does what its supposed to, or is it all looks and no real function?
Well, I'm not sure but I think it's more than 90%. All the checklists are as real life with all the procedures included. This is not a "lite" version like we have in other airliners. Aerosoft's product page with detailed info:
I have been flying the Aerosoft A320 and 319 for a long time now and it's the only airliner I use. It's a steep learning curve but once learned it's very easy to fly without the checklists as long as you have a decent memory! Flying without checklists is wrong but I find I just don't need them and I don't use the co-pilot voice nags either. Your best bet is to create one shortish flight and do it over and over until it's right and you are used to all the procedures then try different routes. You don't create a flight within FSX. It's all done onboard the plane. I always go 'cold and dark' startup right through to landing but I always do a full ILS landing simply because it's easier. I recommend watching this video on Youtube which is a great way of getting the basics.
Read somewhere about a new FSX addon that gives better, more varied and better suited to each terrain autogen objects, including houses more aproppiate to each cultural zone. Anyone know that addon?

Not sure, but that sounds like Orbx Global. Also, although I don't have it, GEX?
Featuring the RealAir Turbine Duke and the Flight 1 GTN 750 gps along with the weather radar mod. Orbx Pago Pago, Global, Vector, Rex Texture Direct, Active Sky Next and FSX SE.
Click on YouTube, select full screen and 1080p rez.
Terrific video Warbirds, great flight and nicely edited too, really makes me want to dust off FSX and take the TurbineDuke out for a spin, will have to look into that GTN750 since my RealityXP GNX530 doesn't work with FSX Steam Edition, that looks pretty snazzy.
The GTN 750 is the Swiss knife of the Garmin line and now I really don't want to fly without it. I have it as a popup in all my planes but a few I have managed to cram it into the panel. I just got done putting it into the panel of my current fav the Honda Jet.
@Warbirds - thanks for turning me onto the GTN750, I picked it up this weekend and am loving it in the RA TDukeV2 and Legacy and the A2A C172 and Cherokee now I just need to work on retrofitting it into the Carenado C337 and Baytower RV7 which are my other two planes I fly alot.
Really nice shots @Eightball, such nice weather depiction! What weather engine are you using? ASN?
