just re installed cfs3--and added firepower-scenery is a lot better, but still "blocky"(straight lines) over coast-any way to alter that?
but the worst thing is the sound on gunfire-sound carries on after releasing trigger--hope one of you guys knows a fix for this.
i get frame rates of 60 fps, compared with 90-100 in il2(all settings maxed)
will keep trying, but dont think it will woo me away from forgotten battles.
will appreciate any suggestions for improvement.........thx

T-Man: Under either CFS3Config or in-game menu - "graphics", set your sliders for terrain and scenery all the way over to 5. I'm not suggesting that you leave it there but just to see the effect on "blocky" lines. Actually, if you are getting 60 fps you could afford to hike up the graphics a bit anyway. I get about 35-40 with everything (except clouds -3) set at 5 - no stutters and very smooth gameplay.

The sound issue is interesting (annoying) but beyond the obvious - drivers, etc. I'm at a lost to give insight. I'd run that one by the folks on the CFS3 forum at sim-outhouse.com. Look for Winding Man to give you more on the scenery too -he's a CFS3 scenery designer.

Please don't feel wooed. I play IL-2 FB/PF too and the whole "either CFS3 or IL-2" debate is rather pathetic. I'm of the firm belief that there can actually be more than one WWII flight simulator and that folks can (dare to) enjoy several. Of course, I understand that this particular forum has been a happy hunting ground in the past for IL-2 admirers who enjoy demeaning new CFS3 sim players or taunting others trying to interact with fellow sim pilots. Perhaps that is starting to change with the renewed interest in CFS3? Maybe, but of course, you can always go over to sim-outhouse where communicating is not such a "sniper alley" venture. ;\)

Regarding framerates, you need to check your in-game options.

AIRCRAFT - 5
TERRAIN - 3
SCENERY - 3
EFFECTS - 5
CLOUDS - 1

Terrain, Scenery, and Clouds are the big in-game performance offenders.

Since you have FirePower, try the following:

INSTANT ACTION MISSIONS (esp. #4 and #5)
These missions were made to start just minutes before a major battle is to take place. Just fly around and watch the battle progress. Turn on labels too (CTRL-SHFT-L). Seeing all the units and how they interact will significantly raise your appreciation.

QUICK MISSION - AIRBASE ATTACK
Setup a quick mission in a B17 to attack an airbase at night at low altitude.

LOAD UP AND FIRE ALL TYPES OF WEAPONS
Just load every type of gun, rocket, and bomb you can think of and do some ground pounding and air-to-air attacks.

Once you experience this stuff, you'll undoubtedly get more into the game.

Scott.

Beautiful post...thank you! \:\)
You hit the nail on the hat.

Tallyman4:

Your sound issue is in fact new to me. Never heard of it before. The CFS3 sound engine is .wav based. You can use any sound you want.
Check the sound folder in the main CFS3 directory. Play the sounds with mediaplayer or whatever and listen to how they sound.
Maybe there is something wrong in the settings of the driver or player.

Firepower does not enhance scenery.
Since you are running with such high fps, there is no need at all to look at crappy terrain.
CFS3 is highly configurable in this aspect. From total crap to photorealistic.
For good terrain you'll have to be prepared to go from 60 to 20 or below fps.

Head over to the SoH, register and get MaxClouds. A high-res set of textures that still looks good at a setting of 1.
Also get WM's senery manager (v.4.6). Follow the instructions in the readme for high-res terrain.

On the sound thing, it looks like sound is hanging.

Have you tried reducing the hardware slider for sound in DX diag?

I agree with Pvt Ryan about checking you hardware slider setting for audio properties. For a lot of other sims you're told to lower the setting for sound related problems.
On my system I need to set it back to full for CSF3 to prevent sound issues with the cannon.

WOW!!!.OK got my canon sound fixed-turned it up to full acceleration in DX(I had it trned off for Lock-on)---so thx Beaver for that one.
Tried all that stuff Blade--pretty awesome--the B17 is beautiful,i got everything turned up to 5(including Graphics slider at top),and getting 28--45 FPS.
OK Tennozan,--yup--this game does score some points over il2,and i shall be spending more time with it--AND i will pass this on to some of my buddies over at F/B,AEP,PF.
ok now go over to SOH(never been there before),and see if i can pick up those goodies:-)
PS: i think IL2 still scores on the onlineplay,or is there a mission editor somewhere?

That is excellent scenery and the weather is much nicer.

I tried it last night.

Being a smart ass I saved the campaign, then exited the campaign, but stayed in the CFS3 menu, then ALT+TABed out to run the scenery/weather update (the date had changed in the campaign).

This works, up until a point, there's a memory leak somewhere because after 4 or 5 trys of this, the PC was swapping to disk like crazy.
I have a Gig of RAM.

So follow the instructions, exit CFS3 to update the scenery/weather for a date change in the campaign.
