Guys, I got the next patrol assignment in a grid not far from Scapa Flow base. It's April 1940 and I've just received my brand new sub type VIIB. I am itching for a sneaky night attack in the bay. But is it worth the risk? Does anyone know if I can find any battleships or cruisers there? Or just a bunch of small patrol destroyers?

I would appreciate any intelligence report beforehand. ;\)

Do like real life, you wouldnt know if there were any ships there! Prien didnt, he had info the whole of the North sea fleet was in dock, but the German spotter plane the days before had spooked them when he flew over too low, and ready for a bombing raid they sailed out.

Only the ageing Royal Oak stayed in dock (and a small aircraft carrier)

Thats part of the fun \:D the shock of discovery.

If you really want to know you can load up the mission editor and go to the date you are at and check, but thats cheating!!! :p

I found a battleship there, and about half a dozen destroyers, water is fairly shallow I think about 50m or less, sank the bs and nearly got away but tried to get too smart and paid the price. I just noticed I am assigned U47 (Gunter Prien)in my career so I will have another look in my mkvII.

I tried to sneak in there last weekend and ran into nets! Be aware of them, the seem to cover most of the eastern side of the passage.

Hmmmm... I'm up to May 1940 (9th patrol) and I still have my ol' IIA. Not the worst achiever on the list but far from the best, perhaps that's why. My last was also near Scapa Flow but my target of opportunity armed trawlers kept me busy before I ever got there.

Just go for it! Might want to get your papers(i.e. will) in order before you leave though. I have tried several sneak ins in different harbors...I just suck though so you can guess the results!

I got a July patrol into Scapa and the main hurdle was that the Sun is so high it never really gets dark at night. Went after a crusier and it spotted my fish easily and the destroyers were all over me in shallow water. Did manage to get out but it was a nail biteter. Hopefully I'll get a winter mission and full cover of darkness.

I went in there on my first patrol with my new VIIB. Certainly some tense stuff. I came in through the western passage. Very shallow water. There is a nice sheltered area next to the small island in the western pass that was pretty good to surface and recharge the batteries. Close enough to spit on the costal batteries but they can't see you from the bunkers.

All the trouble of sneaking in was a waste though. There was nothing there. Not a single ship moored at the docks and only a couple destroyers guarding the bay. Oh well. Sunk those and went on my marry way.

Hope you have better luck. I'm chomping at the bit to fight a battleship. Watch for the sub nets. Its a fun challenge trying to find a gap in them.

Anyone know if you could blast a hole through them with a torpedo? It would get every warship within a hundred kilometers coming down on you, but it would make for a quick and entry and exit.

I went there in there when I first got my spanking XXI. I found a single Fiji Frigate anchored. Not much else. Watch the depth. Only 25m in there max.

Yeh the single Fiji Cruiser is a pretty popular find. I did three cruises in a row into Scapa and found that they kept replacing the Cruiser for me to torpedo again.

Things seem a lot tougher since I installed the SHIII World Mod by Reg (see here )

But nothing there.

So I disembark, gone shopping and came home with scotish souvenirs for the boys.
