Thanks.
Going by BvH's comments, I guess we basically delete all files in Simpatch & put the new files there.
What about terrain files? No change I suppose?

It's still in beta form, more work to do yet but nothing on performance issues.
There's no terrain in the 6 discs. the "PLasVi" GLIDE terrain is the bottom D/L point on the D/L page. Backup the 3DPatch folder then run the PLasV1.exe or run the .exe to CM11\Patches\patchname\3DPatch and install via CM11.
If you keep a pristine stock RB3D archive to COPY or "loaded" as per the first thread in this Forum, you don't need to DELETE anything from Simpatch, just DELETE the SINGLE folder files.
If you have a previous ROTJ install you want to overwrite, yes, DELETE everything in Simpatch.
SINGLE and CAMPAIGN folders also should be empty previous to installing ROTJ III R8.
I personally start fresh with a COPY of my loaded stock RB3D (rename it to C:\ROTJ3R8...no SIERRA crap)and send the previous ROTJ install right to the recycle bin only AFTER I'M SATISFIED WITH THE NEW ONE.
This is always a good practice with any updating of version of any game! You can then always roll back.
I keep the 6 'discs' of each ROTJ version in it's own folder with a text file so I know which version it is, for redundancy's sake.
Yep, I'm backed up to the wall, the er, good way!
We're looking for folks willing to Campaign as many planes possible, maybe only 4 - 5 missions per plane and move on to another to get the game thoroughly tested.

Hi, is there a forum where people are posting about this patch? How does the creator get feedback about it? I hope it's via forum because then us users can see what others' experiences with it are.

I flew my first mission last night and frame rates were very low. It may be because of something I've done, or my configuration -- or that I loaded the terrain as well (or that we were flying so low and with so many planes around at once). I'd like to try to get it fixed so I can run it because it looks really interesting, a very interesting mix of planes to try.

If I went and deleted everything in Simpatch first, would that possibly cause any problems? I think I did that.

THanks

Choice of terrains do not typically cause low FR's. The "PL128" is a low resolution but still very attractive glide terrain for better FR's especially on low-end machines.
DELETING Simpatch files before installing ROTJ is recommended, so, no problem there.
how well does your machine run? TASK MANAGER should show "SYSTEM IDLE PROCCESS" 99%.
I have a screwed up INSTALLSHIELD MANGER - if "agent.exe" stats running, my machine grinds to a halt and the program is "unresponsive".
Programs running in the background should be eliminated first.
Clues to FR problems can usually be found by paying attention to what you're pointed at when it occurs or if they are just generally low all the time.
"SUN GLARE" 'ON' in PREFERENCES is a FR killer.
High video resolutions increase the problem.
Lots of planes close by do cause low FR's.
Wrong GLIDE wrapper settings cause low FR's, which wrapper are you using?
Video mem settings above 2MB (can usually be controlled in the wrapper settings), AA and AF can affect FR's. You can set up a PROFILE in your vidcard settings for RB3D.
ROTJ is no more FR unfriendly than any other UOP, and in many cases, better, so there's nothing there to look for a cause.
IMO NOSUN, NOMOON is not really effective. It eliminates the appearance of them but the files are still active and you still get a 3-4 FR hit when pointed at ceratin directions in the sky. Give it a try and see what you think, of course.

This looks like a bit of work to get things optimized, but I guess that's what I have to do.

Shutting background applications, OK, but how to know which ones can be stopped and which not?

I turned off sun glare and will try it again without it on. But I'm pretty sure in the spot in the game where it slowed down, it wasn't an issue.

Resolution is the one just above 800 x 600 (1100?). My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9300 from last year that has 17" widescreen, so is capable of far greater than the 1100 or so that I have it set at for the game.

I've got Nvidia 6800 graphics card, bought it last year together with the laptop from Dell. Not sure which wrapper's appropriate for that one. Was going to try the 1.40+ by Dege, which sounded like it was the latest and greatest.

As far as message forums, is it mainly this one and Sim Outhouse where people will post about Red Baron related issues these days? Any others?

Also if there is a good how-to about optimizing on any of the sites, taht would be a good one for me to check out now.

Thanks so much for the help!

1064x768 should be fine for RB3SD on a 6800.
The first post at the top of this Forum contains some general information and tips to get RB running without issues.
Also contains links other sites where more help can be found. Check the help sections at the Hells Angels site http://www.jamrom.com/hellsangels/main.htm
and at Wings of Valor.
Wings of Valor is primarily MMP related but everyone is welcome.
The most used Forums are here, WoV and SWWISA
http://forums.delphiforums.com/swwisa/start
The ROTJ creator, "Baron von Helton", can be reached at the WOV Forums but your issue is FR's, not ROTJ which has good FR's.
To check, see how the stock copy of RB3D runs in GLIDE. You DO have a stock RB3D install set aside don't you? If you read the first thread on this Forum you'll know why. Try all the wrappers with that then you'll know there's no wrapper issue when you re-copy it to add a UOP.
Have you tried running in Direct Draw to see what change in FR's there are? FR's should be near 100FPS at times in DD. This would indicate that the glide wrapper or it's settings is most likely the problem. There is no general rule for which wrapper will work best on your system. The GLIDOS 0.07b4 works best on my GeForce 6600 but DgVoodoo works best for others with the same card, go figure. You may have to run through the aettings requiremnts at POLOVSKI's site for DgVoodoo a few times to pick up on what will work for you. The edits for GLIDOS's "OPenGlid.ini" are also listed there.
Again, don't get the "GLIDE2X.dll"'s of the differet wrappers mixed!
You probably don't have anything running in the background anyway but you can check on it with TASK MANAGER/applications tab(nothing should be there). Under the PROCESSES tab, "system idle process" should read 95 - 99%. If something else is eating up CPU resources you can find it there, but I suspect not. I'm still stuck on wrapper settings as the likliest problem.

Well I have looked through this RB section and I'm not sure I'm finding the right info.

Like I have GeForce 6800... there seem to be MANY glide wrappers out there. How do I know which is appropriate for mine? It seems I probably also need to tweak it (whichever one I get) once I have it, right?

Is there much difference between OpenGlidos wrappers and DGVoodoo wrappers?

You also mentioned something about creating a profile in my video card settings for RB3d. Does that mean within the game or opening up the video card (that'd be a new one for me).

Again, thanks.

You've been to POLOVSKI's site?
http://www.polovski.com/
All the info is there, 2 wrappers, DgVoodoo (DirectX)and GLIDOS (D3D), Each has several versions. Each has RB3D settings posted for you. DgVoodoo has two settings pages and GLIDOS has a "OpenGli.ini" file that needs to be edited.
No one can say which will work best on what vidcard. If you haven't paid attention to the required settings for RB3D yep, it will run like crap and probably be unusable.
Your computer's video card has settings for Anisotropic Filtering, Anti-Aliasing, and a lot of other stuff. It also has game PROFILES, some already set up for some popular games like DOOM3, OR you can just set them to 0. AA and AF allow you to see terrain farther and sharper but takes more resources and therefor poorer FR's.
You can get to it by going to CONTROL PANEL/DISPLAY/SETTINGS/ADVANCED. You'll probably see a "GeForce 6800" tab. Click that and another window appears with "PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY SETTINGS on it, et.al. Click that and it shows 'active game profile' etc., and the ability to adjust settings by ticking the boxes in the lower window. AA and AF I tick and then tick the "Application-controlled" box.
Having said all that, if it's NEW for you, leave it alone til you become familiar with such facilities or you will probably get into big trouble.
Check out http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_1.html
DirectX settings can improve performance of GLIDOS wrappers but that's another can of worms. Frankly, I've never needed to mess with any of it for RB3D since these videocard and DX settings are set optimally OOTB.
Have you run without the wrapper (select "Direct Draw" or "Windowed" in PREFERENCES) to check on the alternate FR's?

OK I've have all the info collected, and it looks like this is going to be a weekend type thing to work on. Thanks for the help.

By the way, I did run the stock game and frame rates were fine. I also ran the game with Hells Angels patch (installed as Flybert recommended in separate folder) and that one was also fine for FR. ROTJ was very noticeably slower. I had one of the Glide wrappers installed in both cases -- now I have to go back and see which one it is. It was the first wrapper I came across, not chosen for any good reason. And no tweaks to .ini file. There was no setup, so it must be the Glidos type. That does ring a bell, I think that's what it is.

Thanks again
