Well why not - I'll go ahead and chime in. Been forum hopping the last few days - delphi here, frugals there, SimHQ and even the aerodrome. Free time is a nice thing when you get it.

I for one still fly RB3D. I have four versions installed as of right now. HA, WFP, FCJ and a combo patch of WFP on top of FCJ.

Frankly, the one that sees the most use is still Hell's Angels. I've said it time and again, Stachel just got it right. Looks great, flies wonderfully, and has a sky high frame rate on this new machine. You'd think with a 2 Ghz computer and an Nvidia Fx 5500 card, FCJ would run flawlessly but I still get chuggy frames over the front. HA is effortless. Just turn it on, load up a campaign and go - just right.

The next most used patch is WFP. Seems to make FCJ run more smoothly - I would suspect the improved 3d models in WFP being responsible for the uptick in fps.

I've had the game since 98 too - hasn't left the hard drive - ever.

Here's an old post from my Flight Sim Forum days about a year ago. Thought you all would enjoy seeing what red baron is capable of.

In my seven years of playing this sim, Ive never seen anything like this Sheer Chaos. Im a pilot with Jasta 17 in August of 1917. Our mission was a barrage patrol flying 9 Albatross DVs. After taking off and approaching the lines, our flight spotted a large group of British DH5s, approximately 10 of them flying at low altitude. I wanted to jump them (we would have almost complete numerical parity combined with speed and surprise) but my flight leader decided not to. We flew further along the lines and lost sight of the DH5s. About five minutes later we were pounced by a flight of 10 Spad 7s which were painted green and had British Markings either RFC 19 or 23 would be my guess. They quickly had us on our heels, booming and zooming all over the place. The entire time I worried that we would run into the flight of DH5s as the fight continued. I dived quickly to try and get away from the SPADs as at this point my computer was begging for mercy.

Sure enough, the DH5s caught up with the fight and soon we were desperately outnumbered. 20 to 9 are bad odds any way you slice it. I fought as long as I could, and managed to destroy two Spad scouts. My most impressive kill was a snapshot burst fired at an oncoming DH5 that burst him into flames. Three down but things werent looking good. I watched one wingman collide with an enemy aircraft and break up in mid air. Meanwhile, the odds just kept getting worse and worse. I decided that a tactical, fighting retreat was my only option especially now that I was getting dangerously low on ammunition. I engaged any threat I came across and then dived away to escape as best I could. I could hear my wingmen dying all around me. The allied gunfire was deafening. 20 aircraft almost all shooting simultaneously across the sky was incredible. After about 5 minutes of retreating I was now back on my side of the lines, racing at treetop level for home and completely out of ammo! I had in two, four Spad 7s and four DH5s, all bloodthirsty as hell. I thought about circling back over the lines and letting the grunts open up on them but realized that if they got me and I needed to land, a trench is not a good place to set her down. I was in range of a friendly base and I figured my only chance was to rush there as fast as I could, land and let the ground gunners do their work.

Two or three very anxious moments pass before I see the base in sight and notice a swarm of black dots circling the base. Momentarily I was terrified that we were being ambushed by the combined Allied Air Services but thankfully, and amazingly, it turned out to be a flight of 20 Albatross DVs, all circling the base Half were black and white striped, the other half appeared to be from Jasta 11. I was thrilled when I saw them break out of their holding pattern and tear into the eight allied planes eager to kill me. I cut the engine fast, landed and watched the chaos begin. 20 German planes all eager to tear the hell out of the allied aircraft. My FPS was down in the 7-8fps range so I was glad to be stationary. The tracer fire along with the bullets blackened the sky as this swarm of planes tore into the unlucky (if not foolish) allied pilots. They had no hope and one by one they met their end (beyond satisfying). One Spad was so thoroughly shot to hell that his wings tore right off the plane. A DH5 tried to land while still being shot at by four Albatross scouts and did just fine till he met the trees and broke up. Another Spad burned and slammed into a hanger about 50 yards from my scout. In about three minutes, there was nothing left of them.

But wait, theres more!

A flight of six RE8s stumbled into the area at low altitude, and are now pounced by the twenty Albatross scouts. Another fracas ensues and over the course of the next 8 minutes, the two Jastas tear them limb from limb shooting one up so bad that the wings tore off, the engine was shot out, the landing gear was destroyed, the plane then caught fire and the crew jumped a grand slam if you ask me. The other five were dealt with similarly with the final Harry Tate being chased by all twenty Albatross (again my computer choked to about 4fps). He was blasted apart in the sky and descended slowly into the forest where he blew up. Thus ended the mission. I wanted to attach a mission debrief from Campaign Manager but there were so many impact sites that the program kept crashing when trying to load the debrief.

Unfortunately our resident Ace, Julius Buckler was killed in action, leaving me the highest scoring ace with 19 kills. I scored five of them on this mission.

WFP 7 combined with MissionGen and FCJ makes for some of the most realistic, chaotic and jaw-dropping combat Ive ever seen.

To Pat, Greybeard, and the entire SWWISA crew, Salute and thank you for that incredible experience!

Salute!
Prof

Well, since I don't have the MS CFS that OFF is supposed to work with, I guess I won't be flying OFF. Then again, with RB3D, we don't need no Steenking OFF. ;\)

I generally run WFP 7.1. My only complaint, I want speedometers!!! ;\)

nice logic : we don't need no steeking cars, as we have horses.

Wrong analogy......The correct analogy would be this:

"We already have a Lamborgeni(sp?), so why would we need a Porshe?"

Regarding DD users, HASP is completely DD friendly. With the DD terrains and DD friendly Objects (the object patch works in Glide mode too)available also at the HA site, DD is complete. Also at the HA site is a "SLIMPITS" patch which was developed specifically for HASP. It offers more viewing of the environment from the F1 and F2 views, and the F2 views have gunsights. It works in both DD and Glide.
You can't argue with 100 FPS!
For stock RB3D, the "All Planes Patch" from Ren's site ("lowres.vol when unpacked)) is DD and Glide compatible.
I've been trying to update my sig but SimHQ is delivering an error when I try.
BTW, OFF is not less than FANTASTIC,and that's only the incomplete Phase I. Once you get a little practice at it, the keycommands are minimal and effective.
It doesn't replace RB3D, but any WWI combat sim lover will have to have it.
Oh, it's free to try, donations are voluntary!

The only reason not to try OFF is either a low-end puter or a devotion to another sim that verges on the fanatical.
You may like OFF or not, but refusing to even try it, and making comments about it is what irks me.

RB3D still has a cherished place on my HD. I'm running mainly WFP (which has been amazingly stable for me) and HASP. Haven't had a chance to try out Von Helton's latest yet but I'm sure I will. As for OFF, it has some beautiful models and shows potential, but I just can't get into the campaign yet. It so far lacks that wonderful randomness that the RB3D campaign displays so well. I have high hopes for OFF phase 2 however. Just remember, OFF is still a work in progress.

Also eagerly awaiting the new WWI sim 'Knights of the Sky'. Here's a link if anyone's curious: http://www.gennadich.com/lang/en/

The venerable RB3D... OFF... Knights of the Sky... all in all, not a bad time to be a fan of WWI flight sims.

No one is saying that, and I *did* try OFF......

1. The menu system is abysmal & has no immersion.

2. The wingmen, for a modern sim, were "do-nothings".....I got the same, or better, from RB's wingmen!

3. No dynamic campaign.

The menu system is, well, a menu system. It's functional and not unattractive.
The AI are certainly lackadaisical so far, too predictable and easy to shoot down
I rather think the Campaigns are dynamic in that they are not 'canned'. As in RB3D you don't know what type mission will come up or what you'll run into during the flight. On one flight I was being chased by 6 Alb DIII's and 4 Fokker DRI's and spotted some 4 Spad VII's and 3 Hanriots and led them into each other. It was a wild melee!
I think OFF and RB3D still show promise!
I'm eager to see the new photo terrains for RB3D which are in developement.
I don't know if anybody's ever asked Oleg why he won't produce a WWI flight sim.

No, he's just saying the Knights of the Sky will not be using the IL2/FB engine and that Oleg/Maddox 1C has nothing to do with the development of this sim. Time for an update on news ;\)

I frankly don't give a damn, either way.

.....This is *not* the Knights of the Sky Forum.

.....This is not the OFF Forum.

.....This is not the FS-DOE Forum.

No, this is the Red Baron Forum, and on this forum, we talk about RB, not it's (abysmally weak) competition.

There is *no* flight sim, living or dead, that has RB's dynamic campaign. That's not heresay.......

THAT'S A FACT.

.....And as long as that's true, RB is KING!
