I used and enjoyed RB3D for a period several years ago. I am now tempted to try and reinstall this on my current XP machine--( AMD 64 3200 with a leadtech nvidia 5900 card.)
I still have my original Red Baron 2 CD and handbooks but that is all.
I shall need the 3D patch and I presume some way to emulate 3DFX . I also imagine the way to then go is to d/l one of the major general patches like "Full Canvas Jscket" or the Hells Angels Patch.

Could someone with current experience with RB
please advise me of my best approach to this reinstall . Currently I do not know where to get the basic 3D patch or what sort of 3DFX emulator would be best with my setup.
Also are there any particular pitfalls I need to be wary of.
Many thanks for any help with this
Cheers

The links in my sig will guide you through everything you need to know and provide the resources you'll need.
Be patient, be carefull and you will have a trouble-free rockin' great time with the amazing improvements to the game.
FIRST - you will need the RBII to 3D upgrade, you'll see it as you travel through the links below.
SECOND - You will need the SERVER patches (1.0.7.7, 1.0.7.8)IF you intend to fly on-line.
You will want to have multiple installs to keep Single Player UOP's and Multi Player separate.
I recommend adding everything you'll need (like the UPGRADE to 3D, CM11, copy of the VIDEO folder from the CD to the RB3D/DATA folder, even terrains, etc) then RE-NAME it,make a COPY of the whole shebang (before adding any major UOP's)and ZIP the copy for future use.
You cannot D/L FCJ - $28 will get it, look here:
http://www.plgrafix.com/
Hell's Angels SuperPatch (HASP)is an easy,one-shot total planes upgrade, terrains are your choice but the OTE/PL combo offered at the site as "default" is excellent. You can switch out different terrains as you like.
You can get everything you need for the game from the HA site.
The Western Front Patch (WFP) requires frequent updating of your Campaigns using CM11 and offers over 100 planes to fly, including recons and bombers!
You can get the GLIDE wrappers at Polovski's site:
http://people.delphiforums.com/Polovski/
dgVoodoo is now universally recognized as the best, especially for ATI but you may also want to try the OGL version for your vid card and decide for yourself which is best. Pay close attention to the SETTINGS requirements for each
The NUMBER ONE rule, I guess for RB3D is to run the game at a DIFFERENT resolution than your Desktop.
You're using WinXP so you won't have sound in the game without one of the "fixes" offered - I recommend the FCJ-CP (Control Panel), a stand-alone program that includes the XP fix.
Well, welcome back and prepare to be amazed! \:D
It's always best to ask if you're unsure of anything before mucking up your game!! ;\)

Skiddmark-------- Many thanks for your really comprehensive and helpful advice.

Just 2 quick followups
1) What is the adverse effect of using same res. as desktop ? Currently using 1024/768 as desktop---what res. would you suggest for RB with my setup
2) Is there any possible subsequent affect on the Nvidia card performance with other D3D games of using the dgVoodoo installation with RB. I presume not but I'm a non-techno.
Thanks again for the excellent info.

RB maintains a relationship with your DT res for the purpose of "tasking" (ALT-TAB from the RB MAIN menu). There's a resulting conflict in the RB code 'sometimes' which causes a DTD if the game res and DT res are the same (it gets confused  ).
Run your game res as high as you can \:D - higher than your DT - if your GLIDE FR's are too low, select a res lower than your DT.
There's no need to run DT at high res - how many icons do you have on it? Filled up?
I run my DT at 800/600 and RB at 1024/768 in DD and 640/480 with dgVoodoo on the 16Mb Radeon card I'm currently using.
The dgVoodoo or OGL wrappers are within the RB folder so - no problem with other games AFAIK.
The OpenGL (0.07b4 or 0.09rc5) wrapper MAY be better for nVidia cards.
dgVoodoo uses DirectX - experiment.
The Glide2x.dll file of each is NOT compatible with the other so make sure you swap it out if changing wrappper types.

Skiddmark---Thanks once again. Now feel totally equipped to give it all a fresh whirl ( though probably a rash state of mind for a walking disaster area like me)
Am off for a week or two now but armed with all your excellent insights, I'll plunge in to this when I return.
All best wishes and grateful thanks again.....

Superb help from Skidmark as always. Plenty of screenshots on my website of Red Baron using some of the free and not-free mods available too.

Enjoy and welcome back.
