Salute!,
Welcome back to RB3D.
If you want to learn more about views, there is a great document called "Situational Awareness and Microsoft's Sidewinder" in the document section of Wings of Valor at
http://www.wings-of-valor.net/ Also in the forum section in Strategy and Tactics, there is an excellent thread called "What I see. Views for all occasions."
I wouldn't call the view system outdated so much as different. It just takes a little getting used to.
I am typing this from memory, so forgive me if this is not totally correct.
The 'N' key picks up contact from one mile. Too far away to tell what they are. The 'E' and 'F' key tells you who is the enemy and who is a friendly within half a mile.
If you have an 'E' contact, hitting F8 will give you a view of the enemy in the front of the screen with you behind. This view is very important for judging the bearing , height and energy state of the enemy.
In a dogfight, I fly in F5 (chase view), and use the E button to get bearings, and most importantly, use the F3 button. This keeps you in front of the screen with the enemy always in the background. This is hard at first because it feels like you are flying in remote control. But is a great way for keeping your wits about you and maintaining your Situational Awareness.
I only use the foward view when I am 'guns on'.
Stick at it. It become very intuitive after a while.
Regards,
Poyungan.
