Jasta 30 Aerodrome Attack, April 4, 1917
http://home.earthlink.net/~bcastleberry1hsd/ I never thought I'd make it back from this one. I just wish RB hadn't healed my plane damage when the ambulance came, so it would have shown in that shot.
Seven scouts of J30 were assigned to attack an aerodrome at La Bellevue. Knowing that missions of this kind often go to hell for the Germans, I flew it anyway. Well, about halfway there we met up with 3 RE.8s escorted by 3 Spad 7s and a Nieuport 17, and commenced to fight. J30 attacked very aggressively in the face of tremendous resistence in the air and from the ground. The 2-seaters tried doggedly to continue their course toward our lines, such that the fight drifted over our own guns, and began to turn in our favor. At the end, one Spad broke off from our two-on-one fight and turned tail. Another fled east, but I was too damaged to pursue him, only managing to stay above the treetops long enough to land at the closest aerodrome.
