The default terrain and Airplane textures in RB3D, even if you've upgraded to the 3D version, are very ugly indeed.

Look at the "ain't She Perty?" thread on this page for some stunning shots of Kess's Promised Land terrain and aircraft conversions. Also, look farther down the page for the "Newbie Info" thread to see where you can download lots of cool RB3D stuff.

If we weere limited to the stock version of RB3D, I'd still be playing FLying Corps Gold.

Give Glidos a try. Link is in the newbie thread.

With an NVidia card you will only be seeing it in Direct Draw or software mode. I'm not surprised you're disappointed! You definitely need Glidos but bear in mind that its hardware-hungry and you will not see very impressive frame rates unless you have some seriously hot hardware. The original game was designed for 3DFx and works best in that mode. Not to take anything away from Glidos but they could only work with what they had. Considering what they were up against, it's a remarkable achievement. I don't think a TNT card is going to cut it even with the latest drivers but you never know without trying it. Select the 3DFx option in the graphics menu after you have installed the Glidos patch.

Manolete:
Welcome to the bloody skies!
When you get the neccessary terrain and aircraft improvements you will be amazed even in DD. The single most effective one-shot improvement to the boxed version is the famous 'lowres' or 'Standard' .vol'.
It upgrades everything without 'patching'.
You will need the Campaign Manager program to add other desirables and neccessities.
There are many, many Newbie info files you will find to get up to speed.
The SEARCH engine is your best friend but anytime you need help,we are here and at Wings Of Valor and SWWISA at Delphi, check out the LINKS.

I took this shot of a Nieuport flying over Kess's Promised Land terrain. Look at the shadows cast by the hedgerows.

This is with a GeForce3 Ti500 and Glidos/Open Glide.

Well, bugger, you'll not see it. Ah, how I long for the days of free image hosting!

Skiddmark: how does the Auction Watch thing work exactly? Do they charge for every image uploaded? Do they require you to link to an auction site or something? I'm thinking of subscribing, because 10¢ a screenshot isn't too bad.

BTW-what're you doin' here, anyway? I thought you were out in the boonies shootin' rats or somethin'?

Hi,Manolete, this should be the link to the 'lowres.vol:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~rensg/New_high_quality_planes.htm
Info and the file to download are on that page. The one you want is the one that indicates DIRECT DRAW and "you do NOT need 'planeparts'."
Saves you from adding about a thousand .bmp's
It makes a huge improvement in the planes and terrains FM and DM and ground objects etc etc and is the biggest jump in improvement for the least trouble! It's all I'm using right now.
As mentioned, you'll need to get Campaign Manager to install other patches like 'invisible cockpit' 'blueskies' and other stuff. SEARCH the posts for Newbie page links ans go slow, check the readme's and I'll bet you don't ask dumber questions than I have
WingsofValor.org has tons of everything you need for RB.
Yea, Savage,I'm up in dem der hills now and whaddya know - an ISP moved into the area(Civilisation encroaches). We don't see much of rats (due to feral cats) but we got plenty of stuff to shoot at. I'm making a .22 pistol with a 22 inch barrel and scope. Workin on a Moonshine formula (shhhhh!). The Milky Way looks thick enough to walk on! I'm gonna get that 80lb Snappin Turtle outta that pond come spring. There's a lot of work to do but it sure beats the Megatropolis grind!
