excellent review, nice placement of the videos in it to explain more... thats what I'm hoping to bring in the future to SimHQ, depending on the boss and bandwidth.

I absolutely love my VBS1, the only 2 major problems for me was/is the price, extremely high, and the lack of multiplayer players, probably because of the price.

I found the missions more realistic and more modern. Then the 12 islands, all the professionally done missions and MP missions, then all my favorite OFP missions converted for VBS1 use... alot of content.

If they could sell the DVD package for 100 bucks, I could and would highly recommend it, not like they would lose money, since they already moved on to VBS2.

IMO VBS1 is a great game, but the cost is ridiculous compared to SB Pro PE which is just as great if not better then OFP, but only with armor combat elements, and cheap at 125 bucks.

Thx for sharing the review, I love your work and web site, one of my favorites.

Thanks for the kind words Magnum...I'm more of a long time lurker here at SimHQ, but I can honestly say that your coverage of more than a few titles has been comprehensive and even compelling, in convincing me to shell out cash...and I'm glad to say I have no regrets! \:D

PM me if you ever feel like connecting for MP VBS1...

we looked at this in our group - but is was just too much money for most, so none of us got it.

how would you two compare it to OFP? what is really different?

12 islands, tones of professional grade add-ons, no campaign but tons of missions, most well done by professional military folks, so more realistic in that sense. Just seems more serious, more real, more tactical... hard to explain... I love it but don't suggest it to a gamer.

i would probably like it... \:\)

if the same tome was taken with missions in OFP, would you say they are similar? i have done that in the few missions i have created - gone from my experience as to what missions i had in training/field excercises.

thx Magnum!

p.s. - u gotta pay for each add on too, correct?

I was on the VBS1 web site last night and exchanged emails with a dude named Gordon Bradbury? Anyway, you can buy the VBS1 Special Offer Pack for $267. It includes VBS1 (the base game) plus the Special Forces Pack plus Terrain Pack 1 plus Animals Pack plus something called "Observer".

Later, I figured I'd add the U.S. Army Pack 1 ($133) and Terrain Pack 2 ($67) and Terrain Pack 3, which is Iraq ($133).

$267 bucks would get me started. That's a pretty good deal to get started, don't you think? Or maybe not. I'm interested in your opinion, Magnum, and Grunt's.

267 is a good deal based on what most others paid... I love VBS1, but I still don't see the whole package more then 100 for gamers... there already working on VBS2, if they sold VBS1 DVD suite for 100 bucks they'd make a killing I would believe.

12 islands, hundreds of already made add-ons, all four seasons, different regions, more missions and professional training tools... no campaign thou.

All a matter of how much you want it, and how much willing to spend... for me it was 1000 bucks, kinda pissed now that people can get it for 300 bucks, but i understand...

just like TV's... 14 months ago i bought a Samsung DLP for almost 4k, same TV is under 1K now... the new, better, bigger, badder Samsung DLP I got yesterday/today is 2K... don't seem right or fair, but nature of the beast... even with VBS1.

Gordon Bradbury is a solid cat...He's a good resource and will answer all of your VBS questions, provided none of them require him to divulge classified or proprietary information... ;-)

Anyway, I agree with magnum...and as i stated in the review, the decision to purchase VBS1 is entirely subjective...it really depends upon how serious you are about utilizing the software. $267 is still high, but the package you get will certainly permit you to get your feet wet in VBS1...but you still won't get the full functionality of what makes VBS1 special...its not about the unit skins and weapons models...its really about the realisitic scenario possibilities and integration of multiple users practicing real life mission rehearsal...if you're not going to use it for the intended purpose, and obtain the full functionality, I really don't see how its worth it at any price...

Wow, you must be wealthy! Six grand worth of TVs in 14 months? Most people can't afford that over 14 years.

Anyway, regarding VBS1, you say you paid 1,000 big ones, but you got the whole DVD suite--all the add-ons like USMC, U.S. Army, Artillery, and OPFOR1 and all the rest of 'em. The $267 deal is only for VBS1, Terrain Pack 1, Animals, Observer, and Special Forces Pack, so I don't think you got ripped off.

That sounds discouraging. I really just want to play singleplayer missions. A kind of Op Flash on steroids is what I was looking for.

Plainsman - i don't know where you live but that price you have is $266 Australian dollars. that is $199 U.S. dollars. there is a box on the right side of the pages at the VBS1 store where you can choose the currency of your choice. Australian dollars, U.S. dollars or, Euros.

the U.S. Army module is $100 dollars, Terrain Pack 2 is $50 dollars and, Terrain Pack 3 is $100 dollars.

Looks like the guy on the far right is using a wheel. Does OFP/VBS handle wheel input appropriately?
