So, my copy of OFP:GOTY came in last Fri. Didn't really get to mess with it all weekend because I was sick and felt like crap...just pretty much stayed in bed. Started feeling better and finally got a few spare moments to sit down and play it tonight. Haven't started a campaign yet, but was having a blast with the mission editor.
Anyway, I created this mission on Everon where there's a Soviet convoy escorted by a T80 and a BMP moving between two cities, and I start in my trusty Cobra on patrol. I sight the convoy and tell my gunner to keep an eye on the T80. The T80, reacting to my presence, changes course to get a better shot at me. MG rounds tear into my Cobra, and several smash through the windscreen sending shards of plexi flying through the cockpit. I'm not seriously hurt, and I can still see my gunner's head moving so I know he's alright for the moment. I yell at him to lock up the tank. A short time later, two TOW missiles streak their way towards the target. ****, the lock was lost and the TOWs go on their merry way exploding in a nearby town. Not good. I scream at my gunner to lock up the T80 again. After what seemed like forever, two more TOWs are streaking toward the target and the T80 disappears in a cloud of smoke and fire. When it clears, I'm looking at a burning hulk. No survivors. I now turn my attention to the BMP. Fortunately, he's just been tooling about without a care in the world. A couple TOWs dispatch him as well.
Now for the trucks. Seeing their escort is no longer with them, they start to make a dash for safety. Lock up the first truck. My gunner fires a TOW that finds its mark. I spot another truck, and a TOW later he's a smoldering pile of metal as well. The TOWs are gone, now it's time to switch to FFAR. I line the third truck up in my sights, and my gunner lets loose a short salvo. Another truck destroyed. I'm pretty sure I got them all, so I do a slow pass over the wrecks and the little town to see if any are hiding there. No signs of any movement. I decide to do a large orbit of the area to make sure no others decided to take a roundabout way to their destination, or turned tail and ran. Nothing. As I'm completing my orbit, I look to my left, and see the last truck trying to make a frantic dash to safety. I violently swing the chopper around and line him up in my sights. You're not going to be so lucky today buddy. With a malicious grin, my gunner lets a long stream of FFAR's streak towards the hapless fuel truck. Explosions rock the area, and I'm confident we got the last truck. As I fly over, a tremendous secondary explosion rocks my Cobra. NOW that truck is totally gone. I swing my chopper around to visually confirm it. As I slowly fly over I notice the drivers body lying aobut 20 ft. from the truck. Poor guy, he was either thrown from the truck when it exploded, or he was able scramble out of the truck at the last second, only to be ripped apart by the ensuing secondary. I loiter in the area for a bit to make sure I've gotten everything. Satisfied that everything is dead, I turn towards home, mission accomplished.
In reality that last truck was probably stuck on a tree or one of the other truck wrecks obscuring it from my vision, but it's fun to think he was using his little AI noggin and was waiting for me to leave the area so he could make it to his destination safely.
I LOVE this game. Too bad I didn't get into it sooner. Oh well, better late than never. Now to start a campaign and try out some of those sweet looking mods out there.
