CFS-3 might be worth looking at also, both for its "out of box" jets (late WWII designs) and its Korean War mod package . The DogPatch Crew's cockpits for their F-86 and MiG-15 are among the best 'freeware' pits available for CFS-3. In CFS-3 you can set up Instant Action dogfight scenarios very easily; you can choose any plane vs. any other plane that's loaded in your library, regardless of their default nationality when used by the game's campaigns. New planes are usually easy to download and install from sites like Netwings or avhistory.org. As far as I know, though, you'll be limited to early jet warfare -- in other words, no guided missiles. CFS-3 isn't my favorite dogfighter but its expandibility and its SFX visuals make it worth considering. The "FirePower" commercial addon by Shockwave adds a few more Luftwaffe late war and 'drawing board' fighter designs. My other recommedation is "IL-2: Forgotten Battles" with the "Ace Expansion Pack" installed over it (these can be purchased together as the "Gold Pack"). Jet warfare is limited to YP-80 'Shooting Star' prototype vs. German Me-262 and He-162 (and Me-163 and Go-229 as well as the Russian BI-1 rocket plane). On the other hand the default Quick Mission Builder is easy to use and you can set up dogfights of up to 16 vs. 16 with up to four different aircraft types on each side. The AI is fairly good and the damage model is detailed. There are plenty of piston fighters to choose from and the 3D cockpits are generally very nice ... the IL-2 series is the true successor to "WWII Fighters" in my opinion.

My fuzzy recollection is that Fluke very suddenly reversed his stance on WWII Fighters' longevity, said his goodbyes and migrated over to Forgotten Battles. He still liked to pop in at ww2fighters.org under a different name for a while, though ... Whatever Fluke's objections to "IL-2 Sturmovik" may have been in 2001, you can't deny that "Forgotten Battles" and "Pacific Fighters" have opened the series up significantly since then. Every one of WWIIF's default planes are now flyable in the IL-2 series, many of them with multiple variants. Forgotten Battles gained an Ardennes map (albeit smaller in coverage than WWIIF's) and a collection of US vehicles in its first major patch.

Ken, if you like WOV, then why don't you try Strike Fighters. It may be just what you're looking for. I like it!

I don't think there are any as fun for dogfighter as this one with localized damage. F-15 does great on the flight models, but no localized damage. I have the eMagin now and even with headtracking Lomac is still really boring. Most online stuff is BVR and you'll spend 98% of the time just flying around. The single player missions in flanker are better designed even. I don't think you can beat F-15 and FA-18...18 for multiplayer coop and avionics, 15 for the flight models and one on one multiplayer. For pure guns dogfights, load up WWIIF in Veteran and go have some fun.
Almost missed one. Total Air War is fun. VR cockpit. Wide mode option on the fly. Off boresight missiles. Excellent situational awareness with the AWACs link. With it taken out the radar is extemely well designed, but also automated. There's a lot of stuff running in the background that's more sophisticated than people realise. It's kind of a pure experience like WWIIF without the obsession of minutia or a dumbing down the realism where it counts. Even thrust vectoring is accurately modeled, probably the the only sim outside of x-Plane. I know landing damage is localized, so I'm assuming combat damage is to some extent. Landing is very easy because of the full graphic modern ILS system used, but hard landings are modeled. EF2000 and TAW got the recommendation of a fighter pilot who said the DiD stuff captured the experience better than the others he'd tried.

I'm not interested in campaigns, just air to air quick mission dogfights with damage localized to the area of the plane I've hit. I think Mig Alley might be what you're looking for (Korea), though it may be difficult to find a copy.
