Does anyone know of an online store who'd ship internationally where I might be able to find this game? I saw this game in the local shops' bargain bins some time ago ('bout a year ago, I think), but it was all sold out before I'd had enough time to find out more about it. \:\(

If you find an online store that sells new, consider yourself very lucky. This game went out of print a couple of years ago and now it's hard to even find it used.

Good luck, though!

I know of someone who may be willing to send you a couple of copies for free. Repeat: COPIES.

Here is the "catch": 1 copy is for you and he asks that you give the 2nd copy to someone else who might be interested in flying WWIIF. (I think that he is still doing this for people.)

If you would like, I can try to get his email address for you.

Later. ~S~!

I just bought this game new. It's a jewel case with 2 cds, no manual. I played it, but it's not for me. I'll just stick with IL2. Anyway, I'd be willing to sell it to you or whoever is interested. E-mail me at pcraniga@hotmail.com if you are.

I added all the mods, and the game runs and looks great, but I hate the way the planes feel so sluggish even with the flight model mods. And the role rates feel totally wrong..takes like 5 seconds. I even tried putting the sensitivity of my X45 joystick to 160, but that didn't help. Flak is very accurate and powerful and you hardly get any ammunition. Anyway, I give up with this game. The videos on CD2 are great, however. The demo was a lot of fun when I played it 3 years ago, I don't know my the actual game didn't cut it for me. The game was a b!tch to find, too.

Careful now, chookiekhan. No sim bashing. ;\)

It would suffice to say you didn't like it as well as IL-2. I can understand that. Although we are the minority, there are those of us who don't like IL-2 as much for our own reasons. So, to each his own.

Anyway, Skypup, I would suggest buying chookiekhan's originals. Copies work just fine as long as the originals they were burned from didn't have any anti-copying protection encoded on them (which Jane's WWIIF didn't), but I prefer originals myself.

If ever you see a game pack called "Ultimate Flight IV", WW2 Fighters is included in this. You only get a pdf copy of the manual, but it's still well worth it !

Hmm - I belong to the category that enjoys BOTH WW2 Fighters and IL-2, but my PC isnt really up to scratch for Il-2, shame...

Sorry, I didn't mean to bash it. It would actually be pretty good if I could somehow fix the FMs so that they are more responsive. Anyone aware of a MOD like that? I guess I don't even care if the FMs are realistic. Thanks

Thanks for your replies, guys. \:\) I also think I'd prefer to stick with originals as far as I can, because I'm not too crazy about the whole pirating thing... I do feel it is slightly different if a game really isn't available anymore though, but I think I'll keep looking a while longer. I'll look out for that game pack too, Swiper. \:\)

I'm pretty new to flight sims, being more into racing, but I already have Air Warrior III and Mig Alley (from the bargain bins). I'm just getting the hang of MA and it's pretty cool, but AWIII won't run, dunno why. When I select a mission or instant action it starts downloading the files and then suddenly just kicks me back to the desktop; game closed! It is working on someone else's PC though, but a much slower one with a non-FF stick. With no more support available for AWIII, I guess I'm not gonna get it working either... \:\(

Edit: I guess the competition's forum is as good a place as any to ask: how does Combat Flight Simulator (the original) compare to WWII Fighters? It's still available locally and relatively cheaply. IL-Sturmovik is also significantly cheaper than originally, but not as cheap as MSCFS, which makes sense as it's a far more recent game. Would you say IL-Sturmovik is a power-hungry game?

Skypup,

Perhaps AWIII doesn't like your OS?

If you're running XP and AWIII is pre-XP, perhaps if you run the Windows compatibility it will work for you. You can right-click on the .exe for the game and the option should be there.

Even some of the Win98 games that seem to work fine in XP initially will have some wierd compatibility bugs during the game. Sometimes you can find patches or updates -- offical or otherwise -- to resolve compatibility probs. WW2F works fine in XP, BTW.

-----

All in all, WW2F is still my favorite even if some of the other sims more realistic. Every title has its strong points, mostly depending on what aspect of the air war interests you the most. For me, it was attacking ground targets and until IL-2 came out WW2F was tops for this. Stock CFS-3 is almost as good as a modded-out WW2F, in my opinion; the ground objects are plentiful in variety and very detailed, but the game's 'world' and the FMs/views of the planes just feels funny to me. I haven't tried "Jane's Attack Squadron."

-------

My "Ultimate Flight IV" copy of WW2F came with the paper manual, spiral-ring bound, and a Key reference card. My boxed 'EA' Classics version had the .PDF manual but a paper Key ref card. Logic dictates that the jewel-case bargain version of WW2F has the .PDF manual and no paper Key ref card (unless it is printed smaller on the CD booklet cover?).

Skypup,

You edited while I was posting, so I didn't see your CFS-1 question.

I don't have CFS-1 myself, but I did get CFS-2 which is supposedly similar but a different theater (Pacific) and slightly better graphics. My impression of CFS-2 is that it really didn't grab me. But there is a huge following of the CFS series, and a TON of free skins and addons are available for download and you can just keep adding new planes to your library (unlike WW2F and "European Air War" where you have to replace something to get something). I kind of wish I had started with CFS before I could be biased by the graphics of other sims because one advantage it offers is that it will 'teach' you to fly with an interactive 'mouse roll-over' function where you move your cursor over a guage and a tag pops up telling you what the reading is. Also, you can bring up 'help' menus that explain what commands do what, what various instruments are for, checklists, etc. I believe you can import terrains made for the original MS Flight Simulator, so hey, if you want to do battle over Las Vegas here's your chance \:\)

The disadvantage of CFS boils down to the fact that it is basically the civilian Flight Simulator engine but with machine guns added. So, the AI isn't very bright and the FMs feel more civilian than military. Check in at the CFS-2 board for information about the 1% FMs, skins and addons ... I believe that CFS-1 and CFS-2 are basically compatible with each other (unlike CFS-3).

What are your specs? I believe Pentium 3, 800MHz is the minimum requirements to run IL-2. Probably 128Mb RAM ... in reality, more is better because IL-2 has multiple things going on (ground battle and air battle, plus dust, smoke, clouds and water reflections that take substantial memory to render. Even on my 1.7GHz P4 system, 1Gb RAM, GeForce 4 ti4600 video I've felt the game struggle when the battles are intense over cities, especially if there are ground vehicles also duking it out below. But then again, I max all my graphics settings and run a high screen resolution; you can reduce the settings and turn effects like shadows 'off' to ease the workload considerably.

A word of speculation: IL-2 will probably drop in price very soon when its sequel (more like 'Gold version') "Forgotten Battles" is released. Expect that to be in about a month. If nothing else, you'll probably be able to get a used 'IL-2' cheap as people upgrade to the FB version. \:\)

Ammunition: you can, of course, select 'Triple' or 'unlimited' ammunition. Bombs and rockets are gone when they're gone. I like that the game has a revive function, so when you get shot down in single missions you can jump right back into the action with a fresh plane and ammo load. \:\) (Hey, I never claimed to be a realism nut!)

Flak: Try CFS-3 and then tell me about how bad WW2F's flak is. ;\) With CFS-3 the flak is so accurate that it'll find you even if you put a hill or mountain between your plane and the defensive guns ... one little piece of shrapnel seems to be all it takes to bust all your control lines and have you eating dirt for lunch. I swear, its almost comical how deadly and accurate the flak is. Most 'serious' missions I've flown ended with my getting blown out of the sky before I could even reach the target.

Thanks for all the info, Skycat. \:\) Sorry, I should've posted my specs, but I was in a bit of a hurry... I'm running Win98SE on a Celery 1200 (extra lo-cal!! :p ) with 256 mb RAM and an nVidia Riva TNT2. Yeah, I know the video card is ancient, but it still works for everything I have... \:\) I may be getting a new one sometime later this year, but it won't be top end.

I'm doing a bit of spring cleaning around the house, clearing out all the old stuff I don't use much anymore. I've got a boxed copy of WWII Fighters, in the old full-size box, complete with manuals, keycharts, etc as well as two copies of the enthusiast mods CDs.

Free to a good home. I'll cover shipping costs but only in North America. Email me at [edit: address removed, game taken].

I'd buy it just because it belonged to The Judge!

(This is kind of like William Shatner coming along and saying, "I've got this 'Star Trek' shirt I don't wear anymore ...")
