I'm being encouraged to install the above in place of Win98SE. Anyone got experience of running games under Win2000?

Make a "dual boot" Install Win2k on your computer, and the installer will give you an option to make a dual or a single boot. Make it dual boot which means that when you start your computer, you will have the option of running
Windows 98
Windows 2000 Professional.

I have been running Win2k with games for more than 18 months.

Rarely crashes.
Pretty good hardware support - with exceptions.
Supports some games very well - Falcon 4 loads quicker, for example.
Reasonably secure.

Some games do not work under Win2k no matter how hard I try to convince them to do so. Di's F-18, for example, will not work.

Typhoon works, but there are many problems with throttle commands. And to add insult to injury, Typhoon is the only game I play capable of locking up Win2k hard. A simple ctrk+alt+delete solves most other lockups. Typhoon locks the computer up HARD.

But all in all, Win2k is probably the best thing that Microsoft has ever made.

Win2K is a very competent OS:
It runs every game that doesn't try to make strange things to your HW and has problems mainly with games from Jane's (which means to me that Jane's had a problem in programming software correctly ).
Almost every game programmed from year 2000 on runs properly (it runs Rowan Games, and this is rater an archivement), just be sure to install SP2.
The Joystick issue is given by DirectX 8.0 (and I believe it's present in Win98/ME too). Win2K has 7.1, so, if you don't upgrade you will not suffer it.
Oh, get AT LEAST 256M of ram on you gaming PC, and Nvidia makes the most stable Drivers out there.

Is your computer somehow overclocked?
I got your same problems if I even try some O/C myself (the other bastard game is Falcon 4 with eFalcon 1.09 on )

Almost forgot:
If you go for a clean installation, which I did, be sure to have two partitions: the main one should better be NTFS, which is one of the reasons you should go for W2K, but leave a Gaming one in FAT32, since some of the oldest programs may have troubles running with the main one
