Does anybody remember my original bitch just after Typhoon came out in the Uk?

The one that warned about what would happen a few months down the line.....

Are we even 6 months there yet?

I was VERY suprised to see that there are only 9 messages in the 'and now for something completely different' thread

What happened to the mass arcade following Typhoon had amongst the lite sim comunity that read these boards?

I'm sorry but with these 9 comments against the god knows how many "we like it but... I dont wanna play the 'demo' anymore" it would look like DiD did infact make a goose of this after all.... I anticipate the future of Typhoon.... but it will not go down in this world as a good game as-is either by the hardcore or the medicore flightsimers of the world.... USB problems almost killed the EECH experience.... and a gazillion months later a patch revived it to a playable standard...

Can Rage revive this title and DiDs tarnished name in the flightsim community?

Or will this just go down in history along side Phantasmagoria 2, Elite II: Frontier and the rest... ?

I loved DiD... I love the 'did-dyness' in the beautiful graphics of Typhoon... and the almost did feel in combat.

Maybe I'm just plain sad.... but I still play custom combat in TAW... might set it up with 747s *coff* or I might set it up against F22s.... but It still amuses me more than playing B&W these days.... Its the options in EF2k and F22 that you *could* turn on... you didn't have to but when you did it breathed new life into the game...

Inserting a coin and pressing start just doesnt cut it for me.... and obviously didnt cut it for the majority of the posters here... a small percentage of the gaming world yes... but can you find me a place where they praise it like the arcade game its meant to be? *s*

I think you'll find it bobbing in the water off the coast of Iceland... dead. After trying to kill that rediculous "motherland".

I'm not going to continue, as I'll be wasting my time and Andy will start getting annoyed...

Had it on my HD for about 3 weeks, became severly disenchanted with it, deleted it and now it lives back in it's box gathering dust on a bookshelf.
Eurofighter Typhoon RIP.

My sentiments exactly.

Although I know DID are now only a section of Rage, I would have thought they would have learnt from Wargasm that doing something completely different doesn't always work. I actually liked the game quite a bit, but it still had some major problems.

The only really good thing in both the games seems to be the graphics. And that's because they use the same graphics engine.

---

EF2000 was a hit
F-22ADF was a hit
TAW wasn't - possibly because people had to pay for what was originally promised.
Wargasm wasn't
Typhoon ???

See a pattern?

Interestingly, all the games apart from Typhoon won awards and got praised highly (by magazines at least) - even if they didn't sell well.

Perhaps Typhoon is/will sell well. I don't know. But I seriously doubt people will replay it more than once, if that.

Cheers,
Manteau

well i have moved onto Flashpoint as i said i would , building missions etc !

i have set my alarm clock for a few months down the line , and i will check back then to see if addon is done / campaign is opened up , and please for the love of god - someone , somewhere builds a mission editor with it , either official , or with some Tech info supplied by Steve Hunt !

Typhoon is still on my hd , but i have not flown it for weeks , due to all the usual gripes and issues that have been said over and over !

Its sad coz the gfx are great etc - but in todays day and age - u need to give people what they want , and that i feel is support for modding - a mission editor is a standard feature these days !

Typhoon could be really flourishing now like Flashpoint , look at the edotor supplied with that game - sweet !!

For me the clock is ticking , without being nasty to Steve , prompt actions only will make this product live into the future - sad but true !

Anyway thats my opinion for what its worth , back to flashpoint , just checked the alarm clock , its still set for a typhoon wake up call !

Catch ya all laters again in this forum maybe , in months to come !

Is Operation Flashpoint really that good?

The graphics look amazing... but we all know where that goes... I've heard that you cant control all the stuff like a real simulation but is it as good as the old classic "Hunter" on the Amiga/ST format?

You couldnt control anything apart from the xyz axis and the fire buttons but the point is it was still FUN ! and the amount of stuff you could roam about in was amazing *s* especially the cobra and the rocket boat... (the bike I'm not so sure about *s*)

anyways... is it like that or just another 'arcade' game?

cheers,

Operation Flashpoint is great!!!

The only thing I don't like about it is that the AI is slightly dodgy in some situations (I've had patrols walk right over me if I didn't fire at them), but generally it's excellent, and the squad commands are also good and they work.

I also wish you could be the Russians in the Campaign and that you had joystick support for the heli and aircraft.

Cheers,

Well, IMO I think the people that like the game have left this place.......it does have it's good points, but the rate that people keep on hiting the same problem with a 6 ft stick time and time again......can you blame them for going somewhere new, where there isn't constant bitching about blah blah this and blah blah that.......it puts people of the game, and onto alcohol.....oh wait, Im not put off the game, but I have started to drink more......coinsidence? probably....

OT; Flashpoint is *fantastic*
To think it is one of those rare games that get's released, complete with a fully functioning editor as *standard*
Not promised as an add-on or anything, plus BI/Codemasters are releasing extra vehicles/missions and weapons over the next 2-3 months for free!!

This is one product that i would gladly pay BI/Codemasters to do add-ons for!
Imagine the endless infamous war campaigns that could be covered in this?.....Vietnam(yes i know there is a mod) WWII(again a mod) Korea,Falklands,Gulf War etc,etc stick those out "Officialy" with 30+ missions each for 15 (pounds) and we would be happy bunnies for months!

The replayability is certainly strong -since you can make SP/MP missions played from both side's perspective.

My only gripe with the editor is these boolean commands?.......right over my head.
I can make basic missions and some of the commands and switches. It would have been nice for them to have inc a level with all those switches/command working?

Although i hear that BI are in the process of doing documents for the editor

Anyone remember Duke Nukem 3D editor done by Ken Silverman? It had a fantastic couple of levels built in for tutorial purposes, which showed you **all** the "Sector Effector tag's" working

VB,
I agree. Why come to a board where people only bitch. I enjoy the game. Always have. But the few posts where someone has tried to start out by saying, "Love the Game!", someone feels compelled to verbally thrash them as a fanboy (or girl). Yes, you are entitled to your opinion to dislike the game. Just remember the rest of us are entitled to like it.

Once a point has been made, great. If you want to add you input to the point, do so on the same thread. If you hate the game and will never play it again, say so then leave so that the rest of us can discuss it without some pompous poster telling us how lame we must be for enjoying a (brace yourself) "game" that doesn't model a Widget XB within the posted specs.

I know people will get on my case here; but I've got to agree with you. I don't have a problem with people not liking Typhoon; it's not for everyone (something even Rage admitted before the game came out). And yes, it has it's problems. But it's like anything else in this world..you either it like or you don't. Constructive criticism is one thing; but what's with the constant bitching? The "I told you so" posts. (or the long technical tirades on how to build a better flight sim) Especially if you've given up on the game and don't plan to play it again. You figure that you'd call it a loss and move on to other sims more to your liking.

Again, I'm not saying there are not problems with Typhoon that are worth griping about. But for those who really do not like the game (and have given up on it); I doubt it will ever be fixed to the level you'd like.

It could be though!!!!!!

Well, at least to some extent.

How hard would it be to change the weapons parameters - come off it, not very hard.

The hardest part would be getting updated 300 mb typhoon.dat files to everyone.

And THAT wouldn't be too hard, as it would just be some byte changes or additions - the weapons perameters are stored in .txt files in the typhoon.dat file. Rage could produce a simple patch. Hell, if they tell me what bytes to change, I could create a simple small patch.

How hard would it be to give ferry missions weapons (as I've suggested before to improve having no missions).

I suspect not very hard at all.

Things like fixing the no missions problem ARE hard to fix and I admit that, but the reason I keep posting is becuase other things would be so easy to fix, and because I think of other ways of getting round the problem (above example of weapons on ferry flights).

Cheers,
Manteau

I agree fully with what you said and I also predicted this from the first couple of screen shots I was suspect. DID really had something and I dont know what happened but they are in the hall of fame now, which is too bad. As for OpFlashpoint, I had no idea until I played the demo and got some user missions..its all I've been playing for 4 weeks every day..damn is it addictive. Why? The FREEDOM to do pretty much as you please is my biggest thing. One reason why I like flight sims is to fly anywhere I want and how I want so its a big draw. The vehicles are'nt sim quality by any means, but they give a good enough feel it does'nt matter. Support this game, its fun, bold and innovative.

Manteau...in the case of YOUR requests; you are right..they do seem possible and doable. Hopefully when Steve opens up the campaign; he'll open up some other aspects as well.

He did mention at some point that one solution would be setting up the game so that it looks for data outside the .dat file. if it doesn't find the information it needs; it will just use the info inside the original dat. file. Perhaps the empty campaign folder in the game directory is for such a purpose.

When I made my statement I was really thinking about the radical requests that some people probably have (working, push button cockpit MFDs for example).
Your requests are just fine.

LOL

Sorry - I know Steve is working on opening it up a bit on his own, so I think we ought to be greatful for that - I keep forgetting it.

I'll shut up now
