Actually, Uroboros, I tend to disagree. The F-16 Combat Pilot sim was so much ahead of its time that it wasn't even funny. I think it was the first home computer combat sim where the angle of attack was properly modelled, in a time when in most other examples of the genre banking the plane didn't even make the nose drop. It was as hardcore as they got back then, coming with a dynamic campaign as well.

Also, it was my first experience in multiplayer. I took my Amiga over to a friends house (he had the Atari ST), and we connected them via a cable. That was an experience unmatched by anything I've played before it.

Of course, sometimes the game would put both planes into exactly the same position on the same runway, causing an immediate explosion... Luckily, it restarted very quickly !

The first I spent any time with was EF2000 and I add my vote to seeing an updated version.

Oh I agree it was great game. Heck I'd think it would be a great game today if the graphics were updated. It's just that it probably would not be consdiered hardcore today and people would find some reason to bitch about. People complained about the size of the theater in Typhoon; could you imagine the complaints you'd probably hear about Combat Pilot? Heck game play area in that game was probably 1 quarter Typhoon's if that; and it was fictional. But the game ruled!

But you are right..in many areas the game was VERY advanced for it's day. I'll have see if I can get the game to run on my Amiga emulation

My first sim was A-10 Cuba, then I spent a lot of time with Janes Fighters Anthology, then EF2000, Red Baron, EAW, and Flanker.

I'd still love a proper up to date A-10 sim.

Kevin Bezant the guy behind EEAH/EECH (Apache and Hind also ) and Razorworks did F16 Combat Pilot, i think the Campaign was the 1st attempt at Dynamic.
The rest of the F16 CP crew(some of them) are making World Sports Cars for the PS2.

F15 Strike Eagle 1 on the Atari ST. Blue sky, green land, and bitmapped enemy fighters! Written by MicroProse (like most of the stuff on the Atari was which I bought).

Followed by F15 SE 2, F19 Stealth Fighter, Dogfight, Flight of the Intruder (my favourite -- which Typhoon reminds me a little of), Knights of the Sky. I'm sure there were others!

Then the PC appeared. The jump from the Atari to the speed of a Pentium 90 and EF2000 (first PC flight sim) was immense! Only matched by the installation of a 3D card to a P200 a couple of years later.

F19 Stealth Fighter was my first experience.

While reading this thread I came to think of a simulator named "Bomber,(my memory can betray me about the name). Anyone recognize that game? I think it was set in a red flag type environment and you could even fly the swedish Ja37 Viggen (Thunderbolt). It was prescripted missons that became more difficult as you progressed.

Also want to thank for the screenshots above, I feel nostalgic.

How about Microprose's TopGun-Fire at Will..I know.. kinda corny, but very immersive game which got me to continue on with F22L3 and unto Jane's F/A18 for the last year and five months....
Eh, Yoh! Regards!

Wow... that was a LONG time ago!!

a 747 flight sim on the BBC micro called '747'... really cool.. It had VOR/ILS and even 4 sets of Engine Instrumentation.

Then of course the excellent AVIATOR on the BBC micro ... fly spitfires and shhot down triangluar Aliens.

Then probably The MS Flight sim 2 (and everything since .. the are ALL still on my hard drive).. then the DID range of course..everything from TFX onwards still on my hard disk and still played.

Then pretty well every other sim currently available

Phew!

I only go back about 6 years with siming and I had a Mac at the time. There weren't many sims for Mac but when I saw GI's "Hornet" and then "Hornet Korea" I was hooked. Only stayed with Mac a short time after that because all the best stuff was on PC. My life will never be the same - McFly

Anyone play Jet... it had wire frame F-16s and F-18s... the bombs and missles looked like stick figures.... the box was cool as hell... all black with a pilot's helmet/oxy mask and a reflection of the pit on the visor... awesome!

Considering some of the sims that you guys are mentioning mine is going to seem "modern." The first sim I flew was the original Jet Fighter. And I flew on one of the first mind blowingly fast 486 SX at 20 mhz. I think I had 4 Meg of RAM.

GUNSHIP

this was THE game that got me into simming and turned me into an aircraft nut

What WW2 Fighter pilots say about Angels and Airspeed:

"Nice job of getting down to the basics - love your choice of a cover!" Col. Clarence 'Bud' Anderson

"I have enjoyed reading angels and airspeed, it should prove good reading for all interested in combat tactics and their application related to the fluid air environment and state of technology in WWII years. All the best as you make it available." - Col. Charles McGee - Tuskegee Airman

Mram:

Yes! Fighter Bomber, 1989/90. Borrowed a copy from the record and computer store where I worked a summer job and never returned it (they never noticed). Played it on a Commodore 128, tape took ages to load and the graphics weren't half as good as the shots on the box which were from the PC version. But it had flyable Tornado, F111, Mig-27 and Phantom - the Viggen was just in the PC version I think. Landing was messy at best...but I loved it.

The great MigMan has an article on it at

http://www.migman.com/ref/simhis/StrikeAces/StrikeAces.htm

and it never looked that good, for the time, on my Commodore. I fired my first Maverick in that sim.
