I've never been one for the "at least he died doing what he loved" sentiment but I will say that it's great that he was able to do what he loved for so long.

RIP to another of the great space explorers.

He was US ambassador here in Norway for a while.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Wow. Irrespective of his age this is such a tragic death. RIP

I don't work for the NTSB but it looks to me from that footage that the elevators failed and thus he couldn't pull out of that dive fast enough.

The aircraft appeared to be under control, IE the angle it hit the water was much shallower than the initial dive angle when we loose sight of the aircraft against the tree background, so it was changing its pitch angle. Therefore the elevator must have been functional, at least to some degree. I'm guessing he simple entered the maneuver at too low of altitude. Another 200 feet or so and he would have probably made it.

Sad.

Looks like he still had elevator control. At least some. He was recovering, but ran out of altitude.

He was 90 after all, could have been G-LOC.
