I've always loved this feature while flying the Wildcat in IL-2 Pacific Fighters. I think it would be neat to have this loud ratcheting sound modded into the sim as an effect. I'm not sure how much of it you would hear though with the engine running. Watching these demonstrations just makes me think all the more about the he-men of that generation who flew and maintained these aircraft. I was wondering as the young man cranked the gear down with significant effort how that might intrude upon the pilot's ability to keep the plane stable while flying simultaneously with the the other hand.

Here's an engine start up:

I've read that the sure sign of a new Wildcat pilot was the undulating flight path just after take off as the pilot raises the gear while at the same time trying to fly.

And I wouldn't swear to this but I think later model Wildcats had either an electric or hydraulic motor added to the system.

I'm sure the F6F Hellcat couldn't come fast enough for USN pilots during the war!

As I recall, the Wildcat in IL2 1946 required multiple presses of the G key to raise and lower the gear to somewhat simulate this.

Yup. I remember well having to do that when I was still playing IL-2 1946.

Wildcats continued to serve aboard CVE's to the end of the war and were instrumental in turning back Kurita's Center Force when it met Taffy 2/3 in the Battle Off Samar.

The Wildcat was never quite so outclassed as "history channel" historians portray it to have been, they eventually took quite a toll of Zeroes.

Here's an in-cockpit view of take off and manual gear retraction and a display model of how the engineering of the system works. I'm sure it was designed with some clearance but with so little room, it looks like the process could be a real knuckle buster if you're not being mindful of your grip.

I’ve read that while a single Wildcat was outclassed by a single Zero, 2 Wildcats working together could fight more than 2 Zeroes.

Here's a neat interactive panoramic view from inside a Wildcat cockpit.
