My roommates went to the Food bank and got a large turkey, it sat in the sink almost a week and they are cooking it now. I told them that it's not safe to eat that and she told me she is 40 and knows how to cook a Turkey and I don't have to eat it (I wont). I have been a professional Cook/Kitchen Manager etc for more than 40 years.. I hope they get violently ill
and they are Bad roommates anyway so ...

I talked to a registered dietician regarding food illnesses such as botulism and found that you can eat pretty much anything from a can, as long as you bring it to a roiling boil for at least 10 minutes. I have tested this on 40-yr old cans of soup, some of which bulged and hissed when opened. I boiled them vigorously and had no problems, whatsoever. I suspect the same can be said for meat like turkey. The problem is, I doubt she is going to be as rigorous as I was with the soup and, by the time it is held to that high a temperature for that length of time, I am not certain that the turkey would be tasty. Of course, it would be safe to eat, but would likely be pretty soggy.

She is not wrong. She can cook the turkey. It will reach cooked temperature, but it won't go high or long enough to kill the bacteria.

I also found a turkey outside, that had defrosted overnight. I could have eaten it, but I just tossed it. I wasn't desperate for the meat and didn't think it was worth the trouble of preparation.

The Turkey was cooked last night and has sat untouched in the oven for almost 12 hours. I am just floored by the rude behavior and entitlement this person has shown me and she is the type to act like it's all me not her, she is completely dedicated to her ignorance. I hope her boyfriend will be smart and not eat it cause somebody could end up very, very ill.

Yeah, I’m curious too.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Well, over the weekend the roomies got a second fridge because they had literally taken over the kitchen one to the point that there was no room for anyone else, the house fridge is now empty, completely. Since I'm usually not around at supper I have not seen anyone eating Turkey and I haven't looked in their fridge to see if it smells fowl, lol. They Cooked it and the house smelled odd that day but I don't know if they ate any or not (and certainly wouldn't admit to throwing it out). By now it should be ripe.
I have cooked in Restaurants for a very long time and I have to go back and get re certified for the place I'm working now even after retiring, this so there is a qualified Kitchen Manager on site at all times. Botulism is a very dangerous thing to deal with and the roommate kind of laughed me off cos she's 40 and knows how to cook a Turkey smdh
