Alfred Ingles (AI) joins RFC 11 in Feb of 1916. He's assigned a trusty Bristol Scout and has managed to survive his first 7 missions so far with only one brief dogfight (he failed to shoot anyone down) and a failed balloon busting mission. Hopefully his luck and skills will improve!

Wonderful! That's something I've been meaning to do for sometime also. 7 sorties in the logbook ain't half bad. Godspeed Ingles. I think he's gonna' need it. thumbsup

To clarify, this is a career you're running where you just let the AI do its thing?

Thanks for sharing Hellshade.

I've done that a few times back a year or two ago. It's fun to just sit back and watch, especially since you're not stuck in the cockpit and can see everything, not just what's in your limited field of vision. Very entertaining, and the AI really surprises you sometimes.

It will be fun also to see how good he gets before he's nailed by another AI.

Nice! Are you letting it play out in real time or is time compression involved? I wonder if it matters to the AI decisions?

Yes, I just let the AI fly and fight using whatever plane given, in whatever squadron assigned, using whatever missions have been ordered. AI flies the full mission from take off to landing.

I do use 4X time compressions. I don't think it would impact it but it seems like it would impact all the other AI equally so probably a wash even if it did.

Here I was worried that I was the only person who takes this unconventional approach to enjoying flight sims. I dig it!

Sometimes it's just nice to kick back and take in the set and setting of WOFF without having to throw the stick around yourself. smile

Having reliably completed 12 missions and nearly a dozen flight hours assigned for King and Country, Sgt. Alfred Ingles (A.I.) has barely fired a dozen rounds, scoring no hits. While his devotion to duty is not questioned, as a pilot his commanding officer has encouraged him to work on both his aggression and accuracy when engaging the enemy!

I'd imagine that would track pretty well with someone who had only been "in country" for a month. Is he flying every available sortie or is he skipping some?

He is flying every mission assigned. Any idea on how often pilots were granted Leave during the war or for how long?

Not for sure. I do know it varied a lot and was impacted by squadron strength and front line activity, pilot stress levels and the sympathy of the immediate superiors... It sees like a lot of the famous pilots who made it through the war were out of combat for quite a bit, either recovering from wounds or illness, training or testing on new aircraft models, on propaganda tours or on actual leave.

Do you spawn then hit the auto pilot for the entire mission or is there more to assigning AI control to your airplane?

20 missions flown and Sgt. Alfred Ingles (A.I.) has had hardly any contact with enemy aircraft in the skies, but attacking aircraft on the ground is another matter.

Thank you Hellshade for your efforts here. I did a few of these autopilot flights a year or two back and found that the AI would sometimes pile all planes into a hill or similar in the landing phase. I just tried it again this morning and it was a balloon busting mission, (Sgt. Edward Cheshire, RFC 11 sqn in a Bristol). My squad overflew the balloon and continued East for a while then reversed course for a go at the balloon. In an almost vertical dive on the target my plane got off a couple of rounds and I was lightly damaged. I had pilot health 95 and losing blood showing at the top of the screen. The balloon did not get damaged at all. I returned and landed at a nearby field to my base, and was badly shaken up with a day to repair the plane. I think maybe the latest 1.04 version might have cured the tendency to crash the planes so I will definitely try this again. I did not do any time acceleration this time.

What an unbelievable 25th mission for Sgt. Albert Ingles (A.I.)! While he failed to down the observation balloon his patrol was assigned to destroy, his squadron was jumped by Jasta 10A pilots protecting his target.

After dogfighting for several minutes, he downed one skilled German in an Eindecker. He then flew to the rescue of a fellow pilot being dogged by a second Eindecker. At the end of a long protected battle where he scored multiple hits on the second Eindecker, both pilots broke off for home with the Eindecker flying low and it looked like a draw. But then suddenly in the distance, the Eindecker crashed for his second kill in a single mission!

After 24 missions of nothing, I thought for sure it wouldn't get any better than two kills in a single mission. But it did, checking the records, it turns out that Sgt. Igles downed not just one, but two famous German Aces! Alfred Osterreicher and Max Immelman!

Great story and pics Todd love the shot of the '1st kill -0a' image showing the 20 odd degrees shooting angle. Also shows how the A.I. does well considering that!

30 missions in an Sgt. Albert Ingles (A.I.) had quite a close call. In an attack on a railway station, Archie winged his craft and he was leaking oil badly. He managed to limp back over to his own lines before he managed to safely land in an open field. He was shaken up a bit but still reported back to duty in no time!
