I happened upon this video last night, I watched it and remembered how fabulous it all was smile This video is pretty representative of how most of my flights went, sometimes I made it back, sometimes I did not.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXnDj-J4cdQ

But honestly, didn't they just nail it? Back in 1999/2000 this seemed like some magic on my PC compared to even the best of its competitors. I know it had some bugs but I've never been one to obsess over bugs and instead revel in what is good. Things came flooding back watching that video, from the great view options to the rather over-the-top ground carnage seen in the distance smile

I remember becoming enamoured with bomb tossing/lofting, and marvelling at the dynamic campaign and how it felt alive and my missions meaningful.

Isn't it amazing?! I just started playing BMS again... the old girl still has life in her...

And yeah, the dynamic campaign, broken though it was, was fantastic.

grumble! Holy moly

The competition then was Jane's F/A-18 and Flanker 2.0, right? There were other jet sims out at the time, but I think these three were the top of the fidelity charts.

But yeah, Falcon was the king, and still is.

Interesting to watch that video. That pit! We've come so far with head tracking and 3D pits, but yeah, this is where it all started.

That guy was just asking to be shot down. In Falcon, the airspace between 500 feet and 10,000 feet is dead man's land. He was asking for a heater up the tailpipe and he got it.

And my approach would have been along the bridge axis, not perpendicular, which complicates the entire affair. This is why I don't watch others play games I think lol.

Yes I live and breathe!! wink

It's been so long I forget the competition. I had EF2000 v 2 that I loved. Also had F18 but that was ... boring. Don't think I had Flanker, although I do remember trying a demo. I DID like Longbow...

As I remember it the main competition was Longbow 2 and whatever MS Flight Simulator was out at that time, and as you say EF2000. I would also say Tornado for the Amiga was really the next best effort for me. Falcon 4.0 was really streets ahead of anything at that time.

Obviously now the competition is basically DCS, but as there's not much in the way of a living campaign I see DCS as training for BMS smile

DCS is best played online, to get a semblance of dynamic environment. I never, ever touch DCS single player, save for live fire ranges to test weapons systems.

grumble... now there's a name from Frugal days. smile

It... has been a while! Hope all is good with you lot. I pop in here occasionally but real life usually gets in the way. My job shifted online with COVID and we're never going back to the office, sooo.

Have a Frugals reunion

We must all be so old now

Whoa... folks still fly Allied Force? I thought Open Falcon essentially killed that fork of the tree.

I had the original Falcon game for the Amiga, aka Falcon 1, .... it was light years ahead of its time and light years ahead of the PC version.

Allied Force is still, in my view, the best version of Falcon from a campaigner's point of view. But it cannot overcome the vastly improved jet that BMS has.

Lets see what u4 is gonna bring. U3 already brought some subtle but important changes to campaign engine, greatly reducing need for ground units micromanagement.
