Permanent settlements on the moon won't happen during my lifetime. I think we are looking at another 50 years or more before the political, logistical, economic and scientific hurdles are surmounted.

That´s stretching It a bit at the rate things are going!

This urge to go to the moon has me wondering to many things that have to do with what´s going on In the world today.

I'm inclined to agree that it could happen sooner. The discovery of water ice in shadowd areas of the lunar south pole region bumped viability up a good bit. If some commercial entity thinks they can make a profitable go of it, it could definitely happen sooner than 50 years. If it was just left up to NASA (taxpayers), I'd be more skeptical.

SpaceX still seems primarily focused on Mars. It appears that they support lunar related projects to make money, gain knowledge, and keep NASA happy.

Yes, I also think that mineral extraction could be another reason to exploit our neighbor. Electronics has advanced a great deal, and the minerals on our planet are getting old, but who knows what they are up to!

FWIW: Given my background, my "bias" is towards spending the many !0s of Billions of dollars on "manned landing" on Moon and Mars in a more practical way.

My "vision" to spend the billions to develop Human-Like Robots with Human-Level intelligence and send them. Overall, sending the Robots would be cheaper and less risky.

Then, if the Robots find something that absolutely requires Human Presence (doubtful), send humans with equipment already "proven" using Robots.

I think this could be accomplished in roughly 50 years -- maybe more or maybe less. But, only if the effort was made.

Thing is, as noted above, sending Humans makes for good advertising and more money to spend on the project. Its all about the MONEY (and lack of imagination by some in charge). In my opinion. smile

Musk has Tesla developing humanoid shaped robots, and Xai, or whatever it is called, working on AI, so I would expect to see them involved with the Mars project if they are far enough along on functionality.

From what Musk has said, the main purpose driving him on the pursuit of Mars is to make humans a multi-planetary species in order to protect from an extinction level event... so I don't see him leaving humans behind, or at least not for long. I can envision perhaps automated Starships making the trip and setting up habitats, etc., then followed 2 or so years later by humans on the next close pass. That would seem prudent.

A lot is going to depend on what point various technologies reach by the time a Starship trip to Mars becomes viable. I have seen articles about alternative propulsion systems possibly shortening the transit time between Earth and Mars. That could significantly alter the strategy. Robotics / AI will probably be exploited as much as possible.

Interestingly, Ingenuity, the Mars helicopter was not able to incorporate the usual radiation hardened electronics due to weight considerations, but still functioned way beyond its targeted duration... so we may see some future developments arise from that discovery. Cheaper, more powerful processors may be more feasible than previously thought. That could make robotics and especially AI more feasible, sooner.

I cannot recall where I read it but there was a study that concluded that on a "per science derived" (however you determine what "one science" is) basis the Apollo manned missions were cheaper than any unmanned landers/rovers were or would have been. The manned missions cost much more but they also had a much greater return on investment.

Besides, just making scientific discovery isn't the point. MAN should go.... everywhere. Just because.

Being the Sci-Fi head that I am, then theirs always the possibility that we didn´t get put here on earth by chance, and that the tech to go beyond Is right here on our planet but we just haven't found It yet. For example the dominance of sound (frequencies) Is still In part a mystery, and we all know how powerful sound can be to some extent, It could be that It´s more powerful then what we know now but again, haven´t discovered It yet. As In many things that we need to discover here without leaving our beloved planet.

Yes, so I hear I thought it had to release a drone or similar but I guess it is just collecting data from where it is.

I have no doubt that there will eventually be human settlements on the moon and Mars. I would just be extremely curious to see how the political aspect will play out. Will these settlements simply be sovereign territory of whichever country sent the colonizing mission or will all of these settlements be under some kind of international jurisdiction like the UN? How about the countries that don't have a space program and thus won't have the capability to send their own colonizing missions which is like 90% of the countries on the planet right now?

They should belong to the nation or entity that builds them.

There's lots of things smaller countries can't do that larger ones can, I don't see that this should be any different.
