Meh.

Meh. IMHO it's a great film but I totally understand if others don't care for it. By Hollywood standards the movie has a glacial pace and much of the film is people just sitting around talking in very ornate rooms. In my case, I have an academic interest in the 18th century (both military and political) and as a general rule I really enjoy historical period pieces. So the bottom line is that Barry Lyndon is certainly an acquired taste and not for everyone. In that sense it's really not much different from 2001 or Clockwork Orange.

I think it would have been great if it had been edited tighter, could have easily cut 30-45 minutes without losing anything. Glad I watched it but it's not something I will watch again any time soon.

One of my favorite scenes in the film is where Barry meets George III and being the opportunist that he is, he proudly tells him how he has contributed funds to fight those "dastardly rebels in North America".

I like Barry Lyndon, but his is probably fair. In a similar vein I recently watched Kundun, the Martin Scorsese film about the early life of the 14th Dalai Lama. Beautifully shot and overall pretty good, but it seemed a bit longer than it's 2 1/4 hour run time.

And along with Blastman, I don't get the criticisms AT ALL against DiCaprio. He's proven he can act in the 26 years since Titanic was released.
Yep. I like him in Inception, Shutter Island, Django, and especially in Blood Diamond, his best role, IMO.

I thought he did very good as Howard Hughes in The Aviator.

I thought he did very good as Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Most definitely! Been quite a few years since I’ve seen that movie, have to add it to my list again.

I'm currently rewatching the Netflix hosted German sci-fi series Dark. I enjoyed it 2 or 3 years ago and am enjoying it just as much now. Very complex and intricate sci-fi drama involving missing children, time travel, closed loops of cause & effect, family & inter-family dramas complicated by children moving back & forward in time to start new lives in the next or previous generation. Gets pretty mind-bendy but it's only 3 seasons, and is a full and closed storyline.
They did a pretty good job IMO with casting youths & adults & elders that believably could be the same person at different ages. In fact, I read that at least one character is played by real-life father & son who have a genetic resemblance.
