That's a pretty good deal. If, if if... biggrin biggrin biggrin

It's good to see a 'proper' AM5 setup going for <$500...but I'd personally steer away from AsRock motherboards. (And yes, I've owned one personally - only one, for good reason - and have worked on many, many others). Kind of a reputation among industry professionals as the 'bargain basement' of components - which prices usually reflect at almost any vendor. Cheap stuff is usually AsRock.

Of course, everyone's going to have a different experience. Some people swear by them. And certainly nothing wrong with cheap, in and of itself. It's just when quality and support after the sale follow the price to the basement...well, usually, you get what you pay for.

Either way, though, good to see the pricing get more reasonable for cutting-edge stuff.

AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU Benchmark Leaks Out: Faster Than GTX 1650 & RX 480

The CPU which is part of the Phoenix "Ryzen 7040" lineup comes with 8 cores, 16 threads, & 16 MB of L3 cache (+8 MB of L2 cache). The CPU is clocked at 3.8 GHz base and 5.1 GHz boost clock and has TDP rated at 35-54W. The most interesting part of this chip is the Radeon 780M iGPU which offers 12 compute units for a total of 768 cores and a graphics frequency of 2700 MHz.

The entry-level performance of the AMD RDNA 3 iGPU is very impressive considering it matches the most popular GPUs such as the GTX 1650 and RX 480 (which are still used to this day by gamers) & consumes literally a fraction of the power.

AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D Benchmarks Show It's Up to 24% Faster than the Core i9-13900K

AMD is preparing to launch the final CPU in its X3D family, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It launched the Ryzen 9 CPUs, the 7950X3D and 7900X3D, but the reason it didn't launch all three seems obvious: The least expensive chip might have stolen the pricier chips' thunder.

At $449, the 7800X3D is $250 less expensive than the flagship CPU and $150 less than the 7900X3D.

The X3D tag matters for 1080p gaming and certain games (not all). It does not matter much for 4K gaming.

In my two main systems, I set the Monitor refresh to 60FPS and play at 4K and 2K. That's just me.

It's common knowledge -- however, the PC news media does not write stories to prove that -- its not good click bait.

I'm comparing CPUs from the same current generation -- not older generations to newer generations. In that case, at 1080p with an Nvidia RTX4090 (or equal), the difference between CPUs may be in the 20+ percent range. But at frame rates so high, it will not matter to most folks (except a few folks who value having the highest FPS at 1080p). Typically, mid-level gaming GPUs limit the speed percentage differences to significantly below those with the RTX4090.

As one increases to 2K and 4K the GPU limitations make the CPU differences too small to "see or feel" (one can only measure) -- though a twitch gamer playing against other humans may argue the extra few frames give an edge that they want. In general, one gets more FPS in these games by spending the extra money on a better GPU (not a better CPU).

Here's an article that discusses the differences between CPUs (using an RTX4090). The article is written for folks who really want the FPS -- regardless of price. They show FPS numbers mostly in the roughly 175FPS to roughly 220FPS range (25% difference) for up to date CPUs at 1080p that are not overclocked. As I noted above, I'm happy with a smooth 60FPS with Ultra graphics settings at 4K and 2K (depending on which gaming monitor I'm on). So, I just set the monitors to 60FPS.

Historical note: R. Koduri led AMD's GPU division. He moved to Intel in 2017. I have not been impressed by his product there.

Now, he's "moving on" from Intel.

Raja Koduri, Executive Vice President & Chief Architect, Leaves Intel

Raja Koduri oversaw the development and release of Intel's Arc Alchemist GPU series

The Arc project has gone through many technical setbacks and delays, and the resultant products launched to a mixed reception in October 2022. The company has been battling to boost the reputation of its Alchemist GPUs, in the face of rumors about a total cancellation of the undertaking. Numerous firmware and software fixes have been issued since Arc's debut, and aggressive price cuts have been deployed in recent weeks.

Koduri served stints at Apple and AMD prior to taking on executive positions at Intel.

In case you own an RTX3080 Ti -- a cautionary article regarding a single game. This is not intended as a "negative" comment on RTX3080 Ti. Rather, Diablo IV is the culprit.

RTX 3080 Ti GPUs Are Mysteriously Dying On Diablo IV Beta

An alarming amount of user reports have emerged on Reddit (opens in new tab) and the Blizzard forums (opens in new tab), claiming that the beta is bricking the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, one of the best graphics cards.

One Reddit user reported that his Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Vision OC 12G had perished after playing the game for only 20 minutes. According to the Redditor's recount, the cutscene in the chapel was the exact moment his GeForce RTX 3080 Ti went haywire.

AMD confirms FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR3) will be open source

the successor to FSR2 and highly anticipated competitor to DLSS3 might be the most important technology AMD will release this year.

[AMD] is putting great effort on reducing latency, which is the key in achieving the best gaming experience. Furthermore, AMD wants to make the FSR2 to FSR3 upgrade path as easy as possible.

More importantly, AMD confirms that FSR 3 will be open source through the MIT license. This means that third upscaling tech from AMD will be free to grab and easily editable by anyone.

NVIDIA DLSS3 games may quickly start seeing FSR3 mods, just like they did with DLSS2/FSR2.

NVIDIA sees cryptocurrencies as useless to .. society

Micheal Kagan, NVIDIA Chief Technology Officer said that cryptocurrencies do not bring anything useful to society,

In 2022, NVIDIA was forced to pay 5.5 million dollars as part of the settlement with the SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) because they did not inform the investors on how mining impacts GPU demand. Furthermore, according to the SEC filing, NVIDIA was aware of cryptocurrency mining driving part of their business and even claimed that NVIDIA senior management wanted to go after the crypto mining market, as reported by CNBC.

The last cryptoboom had a massive impact on the GPU market. With GPU prices skyrocketing (and unfortunately remaining) at unimaginable levels. It may take months, if not years, before GPUs return to normal prices if that is going to happen at all.

The cheapest AMD 7000 system is now close to $400

the entry-point into AMD AM5 series has finally dropped below $430. This is by combining this board with Ryzen 5 7600 non-X 65W SKU, a perfect match for this motherboard (affiliate links below):

AMD Ryzen 5 7600: $229.00 (Amazon)
ASRock A620M-HDV/M.2: $85.99 (Newegg)
2x16GB G.Skill DDR5-6000: $114.99 (Amazon)

there is nothing stopping anyone from buying even cheaper memory (DDR5-4800), but 6000 MT/s is probably what most users would want.

AMD Zen5 architecture gets performance projections from Jim Keller

Jim Keller hints at a 30% performance increase for Zen5

Jim Keller, former chip architect at AMD and Intel, has since moved to other projects and companies. However, his heritage lives on as these companies have only now started the final product development based on the architecture that he helped in designing.

AMD confirmed Zen5 is coming in 2025

AMD hinted that the Zen5 architecture, which is to use 4nm and 3nm nodes, will include at least three variants, such as Zen5, Zen5 with 3D V-Cache and density optimized Zen5c.

AMD working on ROCm support for Windows OS

AMD to enable ROCm on Windows, add support for some gaming Radeon GPUs

ROCm (Radeon Open Compute platforM) is a software stack for GPU programming. It works in various domains, serving as a backbone for HPC, AI or OpenCL computing. The stack provides access to several programming models and tools that can simply and accelerate the workload. AMD also provides access to HIP, a C++ runtime that can easily run CUDA code on AMD GPUs.

Today ROCm is successfully deployed in the world’s most powerful super computers, such as El Captain

AMD RX 7900 XT drops to $779, GeForce RTX 40 and Radeon 7000 series now available at or below MSRP

We have finally reached the point where all newly released GPUs have reached suggested retail price [at some retailer, not all].

there is no issue finding at least one card at MSRP from both lineups.

AMD Radeon RX 6950XT drops to 599 USD, now at same price as RTX 4070

As a reminder, the RX 6950XT launched in May 2022 at $1,099, meaning the price has now been reduced by $500 in less than a year.

I paid $950 for my RX 6900XT over a year ago -- I'd rather pay $599. smile

FWIW: My RX 6900XT plays all my games at 4K ultra and smooth (to my eyes) FPS (as does my RX 6750XT on a 2K monitor). I don't use RSR to increase FPS.

AMD Issues Official Statement on Reported Ryzen 7000[X3D] Burnout Issues

The statement directly from AMD is as follows:

"We are aware of a limited number of reports online claiming that excess voltage while overclocking may have damaged the motherboard socket and pin pads. We are actively investigating the situation and are working with our ODM partners to ensure voltages applied to Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs via motherboard BIOS settings are within product specifications. Anyone whose CPU may have been impacted by this issue should contact AMD customer support."

As the statement clarifies, AMD themselves are investigating the issue that users have been experiencing [when overclocking X3D models]

AMD finally confirms its plans for the mainstream Radeon GPU series

"We saw strong sales of our high-end Radeon 7900 XTX GPUs in the first quarter, and we’re on track to expand our RDNA 3 GPU portfolio with the launch of new mainstream Radeon 7000 series GPUs this quarter."

— Dr. Lisa Su, AMD CEO

I try to limit this thread to AMD, Nvidia, and Intel "company wide" news (relating to "Future and Current"). Company wide news is rather sparse these days -- and much is Rumor/Leak.

There is a little bit of "real news" in this post.

AMD reportedly resumes production of Ryzen 3000G series

AMD is to resume the production of its low-end Ryzen 3000G series.

A quick check on Newegg tells us that Ryzen 3400G currently retails at around $127 while 3200G is still available at $99. This is not a good price considering Ryzen 5 5600G is now available at $140.

Don't buy one -- unless you have a VERY special use case.

AMD CEO Says Moore’s Law is Not Dead: Working On 3nm Now, Looking Beyond 2nm & Will Continue Using Chiplets

AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, points out that Moore's Law is not dead but has slowed down and things need to be done differently to overcome the performance, efficiency, and cost challenges. AMD has been the pioneer of advancing 3D packaging and chiplet technology with its first HBM designs back in 2015, chiplet processors in 2017, and also the first 3D packaging on a chip with its 3D V-Cache design in 2022.

Moore's Law was proposed by the co-founder of Intel, Gordon Moore, back in 1965 (~1975) and said that the number of transistors would double every year

Meanwhile, NVIDIA thinks that Moore's Law has run out of gas and no longer applies to its business strategy.

One should be aware that "these days" saying, for example, that one process is 4nm and another is 2nm does NOT necessarily refer to the "size" of the "transistors" in the process. Rather, it refers to overall performance of the chip (CPU chip, GPU chip, etc). That is, a 2nm CPU is supposedly twice as fast as 4nm CPU -- not twice the circuits/transistors per square centimeter of CPU silicon.

AMD Radeon RX 7600 GPU specs confirmed, Navi 33 XL with 2048 Stream Processors and 8GB VRAM

Just as NVIDIA is set to announce their RTX 4060 series today, we have a leak featuring AMD ‘response’ in a form of Radeon RX 7600 GPU.

The RX 7600 is now confirmed to feature Navi 33 XL GPU with 32 Compute Units and 2048 Stream Processors. The card is equipped with 8GB GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit bus. Interestingly, this model will have the same memory specs as GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, as both cards will have the same maximum bandwidth of 288 GB/s. The card has limited PCIe interface to Gen4 and 8 lanes as well, just like the RTX 4060 series.
